VOLUNTEER p werNEWS - Animal Rescue League Shelter
“VOLUNTEER p wer NEWS” Monthly Newsletter, Number 6, 2014 “Never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead Volunteer Spotlight Liz Hohenstein-Knight Liz has been an ARL volunteer for over three years now. She volunteers at the shelter with the dogs, and leads the Monday night dog walkers team. She is also an advocate for the ARL, often posting and sharing ARL news on her FB or helping out at ARL events with her ARL ambassador, Hershey. Like many of the team leads, she often brings in human treats for her team members. She loves to spend time talking and getting to know the new recruits, and making them feel welcome. Liz is always willing to help out in any way that she can. After dyeing custom aprons for her dw team, I asked if she would make them for all volunteers, oh just a few hundred, and she did! Liz also jumped in and helped out, without being asked, at the volunteer appreciation event with set up, a last minute store run and end of the night clean up. Liz came to the ARL, excited to help the animals and at the same Liz Hohenstein-Knight pictured with time, meet like-minded people with ARL alum, Hershey, at a recent “Cutts the same mission. So this month, we for Mutts” event. put the spotlight on Liz (and Hershey)! Rabbit Release Day! These three Eastern cottontails are healthy & were able to return to the wild! They may seem small, but rabbits are fully independent at just 4 weeks of age. Wildlife center volunteers play an intricate role in the rehabilitation and release of these little creatures. If you are interested in volunteering at the wlc, you’ll have to wait until the fall when they will resume their intensive volunteer training program. This year’s Pride is going to be particularly exciting and we’re always proud that the ARL has a large presence. Unfortunately, I don’t have exact times for all of the events, but I should hear from the Delta Foundation soon. Please let me know which events you’d like assist with & what times you are available as soon as possible. We already have some staff members that plan on attending, so the biggest need lies with float construction, walking dogs in the parade, and Pride in the Street with Chaka Khan. as bring and march with dogs in the parade. We have a plan to make our float even more impressive this year! PrideFest – (Sunday, June 15th - 1pm-6pm) We will be selling popcorn to concert-goers to represent & raise money for the ARL. We are only permitted to have a few volunteers for this due to security constraints. We will also, once again, have an entire pet area – not just a booth. Pride is always one of the best events that we attend all year and all of those who have helped in the past have always had a great time. I hope you’ll consider volunteering this year. Please let me know what you can do. Pride March – Pride Parade (Sunday, June 15th - Float construction begins at 9am-ish, Parade begins at 12 noon-ish, dog walkers should get there at about 11 or 11:30) You wouldn’t need to stay the whole time unless you want to. We will be adopting out cats from the transport van, talking to folks about the ARL, selling a few items, & we’ll have the prize wheel. Pride in the Street – Chaka Khan in concert on Liberty Avenue (Saturday, June 14th - Arrive at 4pm-ish until ?) Those marching with dogs in the parade should plan to spend a little time walking around the festival or hanging out at our booth afterward if possible. Levi Hahn We need people to help construct the float, as well Manager of Social Media Page 2 Photo Gallery Volunteer Party May 24, 2014 We missed so many of you at the volunteer appreciation on Saturday! We had catering by Chipotle and cupcakes from Vanilla. It was very nice seeing everyone in a different setting. I hope everyone that was able to make it, enjoyed themselves thoroughly. And we hope to see more of you next year! Every year, I like to give small tokens of appreciation out. This year, I have custom aprons for everyone with your very own custom ARL Volunteer pin to add a little bling! You can use the aprons to hold bags, treats, keys, pens, a whistle, a kitten … whatever floats your boat, as long as it's helpful to you! Please stop by the volunteer center to be sure and get yours! They'll be in one of the drawers. Thank you for another great year of volunteer service! May 10 Volunteer Meeting Thank you to everyone that attended the all volunteer meeting on Saturday! We had about 45 volunteers in attendance. And we were fortunate to have a few staff and volunteer presenters. Thanks to Dr. Hughes, Cleda, Mary, and Lillian for sharing important information with us! And thanks to Jen for taking notes so that we could share with everyone that couldn't be there. Levi posted this throwback photo on the ARL FB page. It’s a photo of Evellyn Fishman, an ARL volunteer & animal advocate, with a shelter dog. Evellyn spent every minute of her life protecting animals against inhumane treatment & was even on a congressional committee in Washington, D.C. to ban leg-hold traps. This photo was taken in 1970 during one of Evellyn's volunteer shifts. She passed away 14 years ago, but we hope that her legacy continues to live on in the hearts of impassioned animal welfare advocates.
