Pinocchio Name Search
Simple Machines
Some of the words and names used in My Son Pinocchio have
become scrambled in the ocean: Stromboli, Geppetto,
Pinocchio, Blue Fairy, puppet, whale, donkey, toys,
and strings . Can you find them? (Words may be written forward, backward,
Pinocchio’s limbs act together to form simple machines or levers,
and you use your arm as a lever all the time. A first-class lever
must have three parts or properties to function: It must have
1) Effort (the muscle in your arm), 2) a Load (whatever you’re
holding or moving), and a Fulcrum (your elbow joint). One way to
remember how a simple lever works is to think that there is some
magic at to it, as an E.L.F. (Effort, Load, Fulcrum) might provide.
vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Solution on page 10.)
There are levers being used
everywhere. Does your seat
in the theatre fold? All of
the costumes in Pinocchio
were made with scissors,
which are levers. And on
the playground, a teetertotter is probably the best
example of a lever at work.
Can you see other levers at
work around you?

Design Your Own Puppet
If you could design your own puppet, what would
it look like? Would it be tall, or short? Would it
have long arms or short? Use the space below to
sketch or draw a design for your puppet.
AND WHAT ELSE?
If you were able to wave a magic wand and have your puppet
suddenly come to life, there would probably be a lot of questions
(not to mention explaining to adults how this happened–LOL).
Here are a few things you might want to consider. Use the blanks
to fill out your answers.
What would its first words be?
___________________________________________
What would its favorite food be?
___________________________________________
Are there foods your puppet doesn’t like?
___________________________________________
What would its name be?
___________________________________________
What would it like to do for fun?
___________________________________________
What book would be its favorite?
___________________________________________
Does your puppet attend school? If so, where?
___________________________________________
Does your puppet have a favorite game to play?
___________________________________________
This is certainly not a test.
Be creative with your answers.
Remember, this is your puppet!

How Long, How High?
Ways to measure things are right at your fingertips!
Do you know how tall you are? Not in feet and inches, but in hands?
Yes, you can use your hand as a unit of measurement. Spread your
fingers all the way out, then use the distance between the tip of
your thumb and the tip of your pinky finger to measure almost
anything. So how many “hands” tall are you?
Don’t stop there. How many pinky
fingers wide is your shoe? How many
fists is the distance between your knee
and the floor? (This works really well
because you can use two fists at the
same time!) If you have to move a chair
from a room, will it fit through the door?
Check it with the “hands” measure.
In your classroom, choose a friend
(let’s say Emma for instance),
and ask her to stand in as a unit of
measurement. How many Emmas
long is the classroom? How many
Emmas wide is it? How many square
Emmas is the room? With a piece of
string to measure Emma’s height
(we don’t want her standing on the
furniture or anything), use it to
determine how many Emmas high
the celing is.

Things we can learn from
My Son Pinocchio
Pinocchio is a great story, full of all kinds of lessons about
honesty, growing up, and accepting responsibility. Here are a
few... Can you spot them during the show?
• Tell the truth. Pinocchio’s nose grows every time he tells a fib.
Kids might not know it, but parents are very good at spotting a
“nose that keeps growing.”
• Be careful what you wish for. Geppetto asked that Pinocchio
become the son he’d always wanted. He had no idea just how
much mischief little boys (and girls) can get into.
• Being real means doing things for others. Once Pinocchio
starts to settle down and attend to Geppetto’s needs, he
becomes a real boy. Becoming a real person means that you put
other people’s concerns before your own.
• Stay focused. Pinocchio
wanted badly to become
a real boy, but he was
easily distracted and was
constantly getting into
trouble. Are there times
when you have lost track of
what your job or chore was,
being distracted by a video
game, the TV, or another
person?
