ABOUT THE
COUNCIL
Fàilte! I hope members are enjoying
the great events we have had the opportunity to attend these past two
months.
From the beautiful and stirring services
at St John’s Cathedral for the Kirkin o’
the Tartan and the always delicious
Spring Brunch at Mt Vernon Country
Club, Spring has given way to Summer. With all the rain, it has felt as
though Scotland has come to the Rocky
Mountains. Our sincere thanks to all the
organizers of both these events for a
job well done!
Highland Happy Hours are underway
and we saw excellent attendance at the
Belmar Baker St Pub in Lakewood.
With familiar and new faces it was a fun
evening.
Now as the Games Committee works in
earnest and anticipation builds for the
coming 52nd Games inaugural year at
Snowmass, I, personally, could not be
more impressed with the herculean
efforts of our volunteers and members.
These events which mean so much to
bring our membership together and
support our Scottish heritage simply
could not happen without all of you and
your passion for sharing your friendship, ideas, associates, funds, and precious time. Keep up the good work!
The entire Council and I look forward to
seeing as many of you as possible and
welcome all comments and feedback
on any ways we can be of service to
you, our membership and the greater
community.
Slainte!

CSCD will be present to teach some

HIGHLAND DANCE JUDGE
TRISHA BACON
Trisha (MacConnell) Bacon is our Highland Dance
Judge for the Snowmass Games.
Trisha began dancing at age 6 at the San Jose
School of Scottish Dancing under the direction of
Norine Harmon. During her competitive career,
she was the winner of eleven championship titles
including five Western United States Regional
Championships and
four Western United
States Open Championships. Trisha was
also a finalist to the
United States InterRegional Highland
Dancing Championship thirteen times
and finished in the top
six ten times. She is a
two-time World
Championship finalist.
Trisha is a Fellow of
the Scottish Dance
Teacher’s Alliance.
Trisha received her doctorate in physical therapy
from Duke University in
2010 and her Orthopaedic
Certified Specialist credentialing in 2014. She currently resides in Mays
Landing, New Jersey, with
her husband, Drew, a
bagpiper and US Coast
Guard helicopter pilot.
RMHD NOTES
We had a busy spring as we hosted both the Southwest
Regional Championship and our annual Mother’s Day
Highland Tea! A BIG thank you to all the SASC members who helped us make the Highland Tea such a
great success again this year! This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and really helps support our local
competitions, workshops, and scholarships for the
dancers. As an example, hosting the Southwest Regional Championship usually costs about $3,000 more
than we take in from entry fees and we would not be
able to do it without fundraising.
This year, four of our RMHD members earned slots to
compete at the US Championship in Atlanta, GA on
July 22-25: Olivia Dundore (7 & Under 11), Reanna
Medina (12 & Under 14), Shannon Holland 14 & Under
16), and Kiki Neff (16 & Under 18). Congratulations!
Our dancers can be seen dancing throughout the summer at a variety of performances and competitions in
Colorado as well as Nationally.
Check our website at www.rmhd.org for more details on
our upcoming events!

Notes from the Committee
Whisky Tasting: We still need someone to coordinate this type of event.
Save Nessie Campaign: Trailer status. Inflatable replacement. We have
been to the storage site and taken photos of Nessie’s current condition. She
looks better than expected but has lots
of peeling and cracked surfaces. The
‘water’ surrounding her float is dried
out and disintegrated.
Any members who know of a good resource to build/repair such a float are
requested to contact one of us on the
fundraising committee. We are also
looking into sourcing a project with the
Colorado Institute of Art and the Warren Tech school for trailer repairs. Bill
Llewellin has some ideas on the future
of Nessie as well.
Raffle License: The license renewal
application is in final review and we
need one more member to step forward for certification so we have three
(Heather Miller-Nugent, Sabrina Hattar
and ?). As soon as the renewal is approved by the State, we will be able to
proceed with setting up and conducting
raffles again.
Colorado Gives Day: Progress is being made in setting up the online profile
for the Society. In summary, we must
input three years of financial statements, our by-laws, and many details
about our membership as well as our
purpose/goals as an organization and
events that we sponsor. A very positive
reason for using CGD as a fundraising
process venue is the low 2% flat fee
charged for donations. Other organizations that provide this service are generally much more costly. With Colorado
Gives Day we will keep more of the
funds raised.
Calendar: Calling all photographers,
travelers and Celtic enthusiasts! The St
Andrew Society of Colorado is seeking
photo submissions for a new project: a
2016 SASC Celtic Calendar! Submissions should feature pictures of Scotland, Ireland, the British Isles, or clans,
dancers, pipers, SASC events or other
Celtic events or gatherings. Essentially,
a variety of Celtic themed concepts. Selected submissions will be
featured in the calendar with credit
given to the artist.
Please submit photos to:

Many thanks to Sabrina Hattar, SASC

Heavy Athletics at Highland Games
The Flying Scotsman:
The Man, Not the Train
Recalling that Scotsman Kirkpatrick MacMillan is credited with
being one of the major figures
involved in the epic process of
inventing and developing the
bicycle in 1839 (there were plenty of contenders for this title before and after him, including
Scotsman Gavin Dalzell), and
then Scotsman John Dunlop
added to the design inventing
the pneumatic tire in 1887, it
shouldn’t surprise us that Scotsman Graeme Obree, nicknamed
The Flying Scotsman, constructed a revolutionary racing bicycle
in 1993 out of odd scrap parts
and won a major race with it!
A film entitled The Flying Scotsman was made about Obree’s
story in 2006 and featured English actor Jonny Lee Miller (yes,
Sherlock Homes) in the title role,
as well as Scots actors Brian
Cox, Laura Fraser, Billy Boyd,
Morven Christie, and Ron
Donachie. The storyline includes
all the trials and tribulations he
experienced, such as Obree’s
mental health challenges with
bipolar disorder. In March 2010,
he was inducted into the Scottish
Sports Hall of Fame.
To learn more about Obree and
his accomplishments visit his
website: www.obree.com.

Karen Hart’s lucky new Blair tartan kilt came through for her in Albuquerque at the Rio
Grande Valley Celtic Festival May 16 & 17, 2015, where she tossed her first caber! The
perfect turn was captured by the athletic director. Was the caber really nicknamed
‘Toothpick?’ Well…. In any event… Go, Karen!

Famous Scots
John Paul Jones
(1747-1792)
A native of Kirkcudbrightshire, was a hero and the
first well-known naval
fighter in the American
Revolutionary War. He is
considered the “Father of
the American Navy”. In
1776, Jones was the first
man to hoist an U.S. flag,
Grand Union Flag, over
an American ship. Following the Declaration of Independence, he was assigned the command of
the USS Ranger on 14
June 1777, the same day
the new Stars and Stripes
flag was adopted. On 24
April 1778, Jones captured the sloop-of-war
HMS Drake off the coast
of Ireland, the first-ever
American naval victory
against a British ship of
war. Jones later served in
the Imperial Russian Navy.

~~ Fourth of July 2015 ~~
Wishing our members a
happy and safe celebration
of Independence Day.
Speaking at the launch of Tartan Day
in April 2008, George W Bush, then
President of the United States, spoke
of the great debot of honour that
Americans held for those os Scottish
descent who have “made enduring
contributions to our Nation with their
hard work, faith and values”.
He went on to acknowledge the role
that the Scottish Declaration of Arbroath played in forming the American constitution citing the “Scots’
strong dedication to liberty” and also
their “tradition of freedom” that they
brought with them to the New World.
Just how much influence Scots have
had in forming the constitution of
America is often debated. There are
those who trace a direct line from the
sentiments and wording of the 1320
Declaration of Arbroath, a letter to the
Pope that made Scotland’s case for
freedom from England and freedom

Colorado. Donations Welcome!!
See our website for more information on how you
can help. www.coloradoscots.com/donation/
These exciting historical reenactors will bring their colorful village tents and banners, demonstrating Highland
life and crafts from the time of William Wallace
(Braveheart) through Culloden (1745).
You won’t want to miss a visit with the Scots, as they
demonstrate blacksmithy, the manufacture of leather
goods, and the spinning and weaving of clothing. Visit
the RenScots “Pub” to try your hand at calligraphy,
games and sketching. Enjoy a quiet moment with music
and story-telling.
But be alert! The Wolves of Dunvegan – the fighting arm
and armory of the Renaissance Scots – will also be present, perhaps surprising you with choreographed fight
sequences! Children will enjoy trying their own hand at
“fighting” with practice swords, while everyone can learn
about Scottish weapons and fighting
techniques. See you in Snowmass!

We thought Highland Herald readers
might be interested to know that members of the Denver & District Pipe Band
(DDPB) have provided years of leadership
to the Western U.S. Pipe Band Association (WUSPBA), increasing its effectiveness and professionalism, and also helping to raise the quality of piping and
drumming in Colorado and across the Western United
States.
The WUSPBA governs solo and band piping and drumming in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico,
Nevada, and Utah. Currently, 70 bands are registered
with the association, and hundreds of pipers and drummers.
I hope it doesn’t sound like bragging when I say that I
was one of the earliest Coloradans to emerge to lead the
WUSPBA. I began as secretary to the Intermountain
Branch of the WUSPBA, then chaired the Branch, and
finally served as president of the WUSPBA itself. During
that time, I also co-lead the effort to establish the firstever alliance of all the bagpipe bands in North America,
an alliance that still continues today.
John Thornton, drum major for DDPB, was another early
leader, editing the WUSPBA’s newsletter in the ‘90s and
again today. John has been the only drum major on the
WUSPBA-approved judging list in Colorado, and also
served for several years as the Intermountain Branch’s
secretary.
Lise Nelson, DDPB’s current pipe major, served as presiEl Jebel Pipe Band
dent of the Intermountain Branch, then became sanctionMichael Collins Pipes &

THANK YOU NEW FESTIVAL SPONSOR!
Western U.S. Pipe Band
Association (WUSPBA)
Competitions must be sanctioned by
the respective governing body of the
area in which the competitions are held.
The United States has Eastern and
Western associations as well as MidWest, Southern, and the British Columbia Pipers Association (for the Northwest Pacific and British Columbia).
Colorado is part of WUSPBA.
Preparing for and conducting piping,
drumming, and pipe band competitions requires substantial logistics, qualified adjudication (judging) and participation of individual pipers, drummers, drum majors and pipe bands.
We could not be more excited to welcome WUSPBA as a sponsor of this year’s Colorado Scottish Festival and
Rocky Mountain Highland Games. It is through the generous financial support of this and all our sponsors and
SASC members that we are able to hold a fun and successful Games and conduct the first Grade II pipe band
competition in Colorado!
Please join us in Snowmass! We look forward to a great weekend! Thank you to WUSPBA!
