AN OPEN AND SHUT CASE?
STARS SET FOR PALERMO
Even allowing for the obvious outstanding prospects of
Camelot (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) in today=s G1 Dubai Duty
Free Irish Derby, the
reading of recent alumni
of the Curragh Classic
confirm the impression
that there is no plausible
place to look for the
winner other than
Camelot with Aidan & Joseph O’Brien Ballydoyle. Setting a
record 12 months ago
Caroline Norris
when saddling a sixth
consecutive winner, Aidan O=Brien also engineered an
unprecedented fourth one-two-three in the race since
2002, and few would rule out another trifecta this time.
Camelot=s credentials are clear for all to see and, despite
ground concerns, a defeat for the first G1 2000
Guineas/G1 Epsom Derby winner to attempt this treble
since Nijinsky in 1970 will be a major shock. Should the
conditions undermine his natural elan, his stable
companion and J “TDN Rising Star” J Imperial
Monarch (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Epsom third Astrology
(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) are in line to pick up the pieces.
ACamelot is a very good-actioned horse, and although he
won the Guineas on slowish ground, it was lovely fast
ground at Epsom,@ O=Brien warned when interviewed on
RTE Radio. AWe would obviously have concerns if it went
very soft and it is not ideal so the more it dries out, the
better it is for him. He=s always shown a lot of speed,
class and courage and is just one of those unique horses
that come along very rarely.@
In any other year, Imperial Monarch would hold strong
claims of Classic glory following an encouraging win in
the Apr. 28 G3 Sandown Classic Trial and a luckless trip
in the G1 Prix du Jockey-Club at Chantilly June 3. Like
the 2010 hero Cape Blanco (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), he bids to
put a no-show in the old AFrench Derby@ firmly behind
him, but O=Brien will have a close look at him after he
gave connections a late scare. AWe hope to run Imperial
Monarch, but when we were shoeing him, he just had a
slight little pulse in his foot,@ O=Brien explained. AWe hope
that doesn=t turn into anything.@ Cont. p3
The 22nd renewal of the ACarreras de las Estrellas@
will be contested today at Hipodromo Palermo in
Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Modeled on the Breeders= Cup,
the event is comprised of six
Group 1 races across various
divisions, and the marquee race
is the P1.1 million
(US$243,000) G1 Gran Premio
Estrellas Classic. A field of eight
has assembled for the 2000meter race, with Expressive
Expressive Halo
Halo (Arg) (Halo Sunshine),
Turf Diario photo
winner of the G1 GP Carlos
Pellegrini in December and the
G1 GP Republica Argentina May 1, expected to go off
as the favorite. Malibu Queen (Arg) (Bernstein) will look
to continue her winning streak in the G1 GP Estrellas
Distaff. The Santa Maria de Araras homebred has won
three straight at today=s 2000-meter distance, including
the G1 GP Gilberto Lorena Apr. 2 and the G1 GP
Criadores May 1 at Palermo. The G1 GP Estrellas
Juvenile features the stakes debut of Curioso Johan
(Arg) (Johannesburg), who aired by eight lengths over
this track and trip June 1. He will need to counter the
experience of Van Perpignan (Arg) (Van Nistelrooy), the
winner of four of six career starts, including a pair of
Copa Bullrich contests May 11 and June 1. Cont. p7
CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’
Betfair Hollywood Park will host a pair of Grade I
tests this afternoon. J “TDN Rising Star” J The
Factor (War Front) will bid to put his Dubai
disappointment behind him in the GI Triple Bend H.,
while a field of eight veterans will bid to secure a spot
in the GI Breeders= Cup Mile by virtue of the AWin and
You=re In@ Challenge program in the GI Shoemaker Mile.
Little Mike (Spanish Steps), winner of five of his last
six, ships in for trainer Dale Romans. Cont. p4

Open Letter to the Industry
The Jockey Club’s James Gagliano has written an open
letter to the industry, saying that reformed racing
medication rules would enhance the integrity of the
sport. This comes on the heels of the spate of
dermorphin positives in Louisiana.

FEATURE PRESENTATION • G1 DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY
Astrology, whose solid Derby effort came on the back
of an 11-length success in the G3 Dee S. run on deep
ground at Chester May 11, has since disappointed when
nearly 10-lengths fourth as the 8-11 favorite in the
G2 King Edward VII S. at Royal Ascot. That came only
eight days ago, but such is the Ballydoyle trainer=s skill at
getting his horses back from poor runs quickly it is almost
an irrelevance. It is also worth remembering that five of
the stable=s last six winners had been placed or worse at
Epsom before taking the necessary step forward in this
Classic.
St Jovite provided Jim Bolger with an unforgettable day
here 20 years ago, and the guru of Coolcullen covets
another victory. The admirable Light Heavy (Ire) (Teofilo
{Ire}) has his work cut out on the formbook, though.
Neither his 2 1/2-length defeat of Call To Battle (Ire)
(King=s Best) in the Apr. 15 G3 Ballysax S. nor his neck
margin over Tower Rock (Ire) (Dylan Thomas {Ire}) in the
May 13 G2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial--both staged
over 10 furlongs at Leopardstown--are strong enough
performances to suggest that he will shake up Camelot.
What he does have in his favor is an aptitude for battle,
and it is impossible to rule out how much improvement
Bolger can eke out at this trip. AHe=d prefer better ground,
I=m sure, but I=d imagine that will be the case with most
of them,@ Bolger told PA Sport. AHe=s unbeaten this year
and goes there in good form. He=s won his trials, and
down the years they=ve been a good pointer to Epsom
and the Curragh. I=m sure he=ll give a good account of
himself.@ Moyglare Stud=s Speaking of Which (Ire)
(Invincible Spirit {Ire}) is still an uncertain starter,
according to the operation=s manager Stan Cosgrove.
859-873-7270 • www.airdriestud.com
AWe=re just not sure about the trip in the soft ground,@
Cosgrove told PA Sport. AWe=ll make a final decision
tomorrow morning. The thing is we don=t want to mess
him up long-term by running him on really bad ground, so
we=ll just have to see.@
The Curragh=s manager Paul Hensey is expecting a
mainly dry lead-up to this evening=s feature. AIt is soft,
heavy in places, but it=s a lovely bright day today so it
should be soft by the start of the meeting,@ he said
yesterday morning.

WHO’S A ‘SHOE’ IN?
Dale Romans made a successful foray with Thorn
Song (Unbridled=s Song) to annex the 2009 renewal of
this race, and is hoping to secure a GI Breeders= Cup
Mile spot for Little Mike (Spanish Steps). The frontrunning bay most recently flaunted his speed with a
wire-to-window score in the GI Woodford Reserve Turf
Classic at Churchill May 5. AHe=s a speed horse,@
Romans confirmed. AHe=s fast and he has endurance. If
anyone tries to run with him, they=ll pay the price.@ The
usual local suspects--Mr. Commons (Artie Schiller),
Jeranimo (Congaree) and Liberian Freighter (Bertrando)-will attempt to reel in Little Mike, and there=s an
intriguing new face in the form of Suggestive Boy (Arg)
(Easing Along) from the Ron McAnally barn. The bay
captured the G1 Estrellas Juvenile on the San Isidro sod
12 months ago, and added victories in the G1 Gran
Premio Dos Mil Guineas in August and G1 Gran Premio
Jockey Club Oct. 15. AHe acts like a good horse and he
trains like a good horse,@ McAnally told Daily Racing
Form. AWhen the boy sets him down at the end of his
works, he comes with a real good turn of foot. I don=t
need to look at my watch to see how good he=s doing
it.@

MAJOR FACTOR
George Bolton and Fog City Stable=s multiple Grade I
winner The Factor (War Front) kicked off 2012 with a
sparkling win in the GII
San Carlos S. at Santa
Anita Feb. 25, but
uncharacteristically never
saw the lead in the G1
Dubai Golden Shaheen at
Meydan Mar. 31 before
crossing the wire sixth.
The grey has been training
The Factor
smartly in recent weeks,
Michael J Marten photo
and trainer Bob Baffert
believes his charge will bounce back from his desert
sojourn. AThe Dubai race is a throw-out,@ Baffert told
Daily Racing Form. AHe was dull and flat.@ Defending
champion Smiling Tiger (Hold That Tiger) was sidelined
after finishing fourth to The Factor in the GI Pat O=Brien
S. at Del Mar last summer. He came back to run fifth in
a rousing renewal of the GII Churchill Downs S. on the
Kentucky Derby undercard, and most recently
overcame a poor start to finish third in the GII True
North H. at Belmont June 9. Camp Victory (Forest
Camp), second in both the Triple Bend and Pat O=Brien
in 2011, will bid to give trainer Mike Mitchell a boost
before he undergoes surgery Monday. The 5-year-old is
coming off a third to Roman Threat (Roman Ruler) and
Centralinteligence (Smarty Jones) in the GIII Los
Angeles H. at this track on Memorial Day.

SECOND SEASON STARTS IN DWYER
Flaxman Holdings= Aruna (Mr. Greeley) got back on
track last out in the GII Sheepshead Bay S. over this
course May 26, and will be favored to keep up the
good work today in the GII New York S. AThe
[Sheepshead Bay and the New York] are similar races,
but the New York will be more akin to a Grade I in
terms of the caliber of the horses who will be
competing in it,@ trainer Graham Motion offered. Among
her rivals is Banimpire (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}),
who will be making her first start for owner Martin
Schwartz after selling for i2.3 million at Goffs in
November. Winner of the G2 Ribblesdale S. at Royal
Ascot, the dark bay missed by a nose in the G1 Irish
Oaks in July. She was also third in the G1 Prix de
l=Opera at Longchamp Oct. 2 before finishing up her
tenure for trainer Jim Bolger with an uncharacteristic
seventh in the G2 British Champion Fillies & Mares S. at
Ascot Oct. 15. She will race with Lasix in her initial
outing for trainer Chad Brown. Mystical Star
(Ghostzapper) had an interesting time of it in the
Sheepshead Bay. She broke through the gate a split
second before the remainder of the field was away, and
wound up at the back of the pack before jockey Jose
Lezcano persevered with her. The Cheyenne Stables
colorbearer made her way forward and wound up
crossing the line third behind Aruna and Hit It Rich
(Smart Strike) at 15-1, but was disqualified and placed
eighth because of the problems at the start. AThe race
was over when she broke 15 lengths out of it, but she
ran a really good race,@ said Christophe Lorieul,
assistant to trainer Christophe Clement.
A septet of sophomores will bid to get the second
half of the year going in the GII Dwyer S. at Belmont.
Unstoppable U (Exchange Rate) captured his first two
starts before getting thrown in the deep--and long--end
of the GI Belmont S. June 9. The grey was forwardly
placed early before tiring to finish sixth, beaten 11
lengths, but should appreciate cutting back to 8 1/2
panels here. AHopefully, he runs like we know he can,@
said Lars Becdelamotte, assistant to trainer Ken
McPeek. AWe think he=s a horse that is capable of
running in a race like the Travers. He has to show us
he=s the horse we think he is in this race. He doesn=t
have to win, but he=s got to be right there at the wire.@

HANSEN RETURNS IN IOWA
BABIES SET FOR BASHFORD MANOR
Champion Hansen (Tapit) is 2-5 on the morning line
of the GIII Iowa Derby tonight at Prairie Meadows, and
certainly will take a majority of the money by the time
Athey=re off@ is heard. The flashy colt showed he could
settle off the pace when rallying to take the
GIII Gotham S. at Aqueduct in March, but he couldn=t
fend off Dullahan (Even the Score) when second in the
GI Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland Apr. 14. He was
up close early before winding up ninth in the
GI Kentucky Derby May 5, and certainly doesn=t face
the likes of I=ll Have Another (Flower Alley) or
Bodemeister (Empire Maker) this time.
Tonight=s GIII Bashford Manor S. at Churchill brings
together an octet that might be heard from for a while.
Donegal Racing=s Roman=s Avenue (Street Sense)
looked like he might be any kind when he was tabbed a
J “TDN Rising Star” J after his debut score under
the Twin Spires May 27. Also in the field is Positively
(Distorted Humor), a half-brother to leading sire Malibu
Moon (A.P. Indy). The bay colt had an educational
debut before putting it all together with a sharp win
over next-out winner John Gordon (Orientate) at this
track June 8. Trainer Garry Simms, battling multiple
myeloma, won last week=s GIII Debutante S. and is
looking to make it a double with Circle Unbroken
(Broken Vow). The dark bay has the field=s highest lastout Beyer Speed Figure of 79, earned in a successful
career debut June 17. AMaking history like that would
be more important for my kids,@ Simms said. ADown the
road they can look back and talk about it. That would
mean the most to me. It=s about my family and my
owners now. It=s not about me anymore.@

The Day At the Races
“The Breeders’ Cup will not be held at Belmont Park in 2013, according to
a source close to the negotiations. Belmont was as a frontrunner earlier
this year, but a conflict with the New York City Marathon has caused the
track to drop out of the running, as most of the hotels in the city are
already booked due to the Marathon.” Jerry Bossert, Daily News
Purses Boosted for Eight Races on Thoroughbred Stakes at Fair
Grounds “Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots has boosted the purses of
eight open-company races on its 2012-2013 stakes schedule released
today, marking the third straight year the average stakes purse has
increased at the New Orleans racetrack. Last season the track raised
purses on 19 stakes events.” Jim Mulvihill, SportsNOLA

Aidan O=Brien=s sheer domination of the G2 Railway
S. has suffered a glitch of late, with the last two
renewals of the Curragh=s marker of the juvenile status
quo going to British invaders. Today=s renewal should
see Ballydoyle=s sequence reinstated, as Susan
Magnier=s Cristoforo Colombo (Henrythenavigator)
boasts the strongest piece of form by some margin.
Third behind J “TDN Rising Star” J Dawn
Approach (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) in Royal Ascot=s
G2 Coventry S. 11 days ago, he shares a similar profile
to the stable=s 2001 and 2006 winners Rock of
Gibraltar (Ire) and Holy Roman Emperor (Ire).

TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 6/30/12 • PAGE 8 of 12 • thoroughbreddailynews.com
G2 Railway S. preview cont.
Cristoforo Colombo is joined by another son of
Henrythenavigator in Pedro the Great, who trailed
Dawn Approach when fifth on a stiff debut ask in the
June 4 Listed Rochestown S. at Naas before scoring by
4 1/4 lengths in a Leopardstown maiden over this trip
17 days later. O=Brien is edging nearer to the record of
14 wins set by his predecessor at Rosegreen, and one
colt who could deny a 12th success for the current Co.
Tipperary maestro is Michael Tabor=s Probably (Ire)
(Danehill Dancer {Ire}). He was third behind another
J “TDN Rising Star” J in Lines of Battle (War Front)
and Leitir Mor (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire})--who
were sixth and seventh in the Coventry,
respectively--on debut over this track and trip May 27.
He did not look to have made a giant leap forward with
a subsequent workmanlike win over seven furlongs at
Limerick June 16. AHe=s in good form and I=ve been
happy with what he has done so far,@ trainer David
Wachman told PA Sport. AIt=s a good race and he has
never experienced ground like this before, but,
hopefully, he should run a nice race.@

THE ROAD BACK
It is a familiar path that is trod at this time of year.
Those who went into the spring and summer Classics
with major claims only to come up short now have to
re-establish their reputations and build anew. Such a
campaigner is Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum=s
Abtaal (Rock Hard Ten), who had the majority excited
as he went to the G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket May
5 before coming out worst of the French trio when
eighth behind Camelot (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}). It may be
that the ground there was too easy for his liking,
despite having handled cut when winning the G3 Prix
Thomas Bryon at Saint-Cloud in October and when
second in the G3 Prix Djebel at Maisons-Laffitte Apr. 5.
Despite a slow start, it is hard not to anticipate bigger
things from Khalid Abdullah=s Mainsail (GB) (Oasis
Dream {GB}), a close relative of the Juddmonte
luminary Rail Link (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Family relations is
not all he has to recommend him, as he was the
decisive three-length winner of the nine-furlong Listed
Prix Matchem at Maisons-Laffitte last time June 6, with
the subsequent listed winner Bayrir (Fr) (Medicean
{GB}) back in fourth.

REFORMED RACING MEDICATION RULES WOULD
ENHANCE INTEGRITY OF SPORT
By James L. Gagliano
AThere=s no legitimate use for dermorphin in racing.
This drug in horses is an abuse of the horse. This puts
the horse=s life in danger. It puts the jockey=s life in
danger. This is an attempt to cheat. This is bad stuff.
This is doping.==
That is how Charles Gardiner, the executive director
of the Louisiana State Racing Commission, reacted in
the New Orleans Times-Picayune when news broke
recently that 10 horses that had raced at Louisiana
tracks has tested positive for the powerful, pain-killing
drug dermorphin.
Only a few trainers in Louisiana have been named at
this time, but we understand that there are dozens of
dermorphin positives from multiple states on the
horizon. The trainers in Louisiana whose horses have
tested positive for dermorphin were issued six-month
suspensions.
Three months ago, The Jockey Club published an
updated version of its Reformed Racing Medication
Rules. Those new rules feature a cumulative penalty
system featuring stronger penalties for repeat
violations. Fines, disqualifications and even lifetime
suspensions would be possible for those persistently
operating outside regulatory limits.
(They are available at:
www.jockeyclub.com/pdfs/reformed_rules.pdf.)
If those rules were in effect in Louisiana, or any of
the other states in which the same drug has been found
recently, any trainer found to have treated a horse with
dermorphin would have received, at a minimum, 150
points on his record, a 10-year suspension and a
$37,000 fine.
It is abundantly clear that the current enforcement
system is not working properly. The regulatory penalty
structure has failed.
We see evidence of this with these blatant attempts
by a few unscrupulous parties to beat our drug-testing
system. We see more evidence of this in the high
proportion of drug violations that only result in fines C
fines that are trivial in amount when compared to the
purses at stake.
Penalties for repeat offenders have been particularly
and excruciatingly deficient.

TDN P HEADLINE NEWS • 6/30/12 • PAGE 12 of 12 • thoroughbreddailynews.com
In fact, there is no better example of the failure of our
penalty system than dermorphin. According to
published reports, one of the recent Apositives@ for
dermorphin in Louisiana is associated with a horse
whose trainer is alleged to have two prior Class 1
violations on his record. Drugs in this class, according
to Racing Commissioners International guidelines, have
no generally accepted medical use in the racing horse
and their pharmacologic potential for altering the
performance of a racing horse is very high.
Sadly, inconsequential penalties have become just
another cost of doing business. Fines for medication
violations are often no more than a small percentage of
monthly drug and veterinary expenses in a stable.
The harm these incidents do to our sport is
immeasurable and irreparable. The dermorphin (Afrog
juice@) stories ended up on the front page of The New
York Times and on the TIME magazine website, among
many other mainstream outlets.
We are not the only sport that plays constant
catch-up on new performance-enhancing drugs. Look
no further than the use of anabolic steroids in baseball
or EPO in cycling.
But the general public does not, and should not be
expected to, differentiate between therapeutic and
performance-enhancing drugs in racing. That is why all
race-day medications should be prohibited.
The Jockey Club has committed substantial resources
to reinvigorate the sport of Thoroughbred racing with a
host of fan and owner development initiatives, ranging
from television programming and social games and to
the creation and launch of a new brand (America=s Best
Racing).
But we cannot address sustainability issues for our
sport until image, integrity, and animal welfare issues,
triggered most of all by lax and inconsistent drug
policies, are managed and contained.
Otherwise, we will suffer death by a thousand cuts.
Our hats go off to Petra Hartmann of Industrial
Laboratories Co. Inc. in the Denver area for conducting
research that led to the development of a post-race test
that found and identified dermorphin.
Clearly, we need to improve the standards of all of
our drug-testing labs, accredit them and then ensure
that they share their common procedures and findings
in a unified effort to improve the integrity of the sport.
Back in January, the Racing Medication and Testing
Consortium (RMTC) board of directors voted to shift
the group=s main research focus from therapeutic
medications to drugs that pose an immediate threat to
the integrity of racing.
That was a good decision.
Regulators know we have to reform our rules, and so
do most horsemen.
AProblems like we=re having now with dermorphin,
quite simply, can be traced to three issues,@ said Dr.
Rick Arthur, the equine medical director for the
California Horse Racing Board. AOur laboratories are
underfunded, our research is underfunded, and our
penalties are inadequate.@
A longtime owner, breeder and trainer named
Christine Janks recently took our industry to task for its
lackadaisical approach to drugs and penalties in a
commentary that appeared in the Paulick Report.
She said, AI wonder about all the people defrauded
out of winnings while this has been going on, and I
wonder if racing will ever get serious about getting rid
of the criminals...Maybe we ought to try a novel
approach: Give the honest guy a chance.@
If someone within our industry feels that way, we
can only imagine how fans or prospective fans feel as
they digest reports about frog juice and other illegal
elements.
It was heartening to see the Thoroughbred Racing
Associations board of directors call for the
implementation of uniform regulations regarding more
restrictive use of a limited number of therapeutic drugs,
a strong penalty structure for violators, and the
elimination of treatment practices that could imperil the
welfare of the horse when racing.
It is encouraging to see industry organizations such
as Breeders= Cup Limited and the Thoroughbred Owners
and Breeders Association taking steps to reform drug
policies, and it is comforting to see racing commissions
moving in the same direction.
The decision by the Kentucky Horse Racing
Commission on June 13 to begin a phase out of
furosemide in graded or listed stakes races was one
example.
New rules in New Mexico take effect July 31 and
include lowering the legal level of non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs that horses can receive before
racing, which was recommended by the RMTC and The
Jockey Club=s Thoroughbred Safety Committee.
Charles Gardiner is exactly right when he talks about
dermorphin.
This is bad stuff. This is doping.
We need to make reforms and we need to do so
now. The racing commissions of this country should
redesign their rules. And the adoption of Reformed
Racing Medication Rules is a good place to start.
James L. Gagliano is the president and chief operating
officer of The Jockey Club.

BRINGING UP BABY
courtesy Jon Forbes/NYRA
Baby J debuted a half-length winner on Thursday at
Belmont Park for retired jockey Juvenal Diaz, but, if all
goes according to plan,
the filly will soon carrying
somebody else=s colors,
the former rider said on
Friday.
AI never keep them,@
said Diaz. AIf I do keep
one, it=s because I can=t
sell them!@
Baby J at Belmont
On Thursday, Baby J
Adam Coglianese photo
took the lead a sixteenth
of a mile into the race, repelled a pair of challengers
nearing the quarter pole, and was driven home by
jockey Junior Alvarado to hold off a late bid from
Seasoned Warrior. Baby J became the first winner for
her freshman sire, 2008 GII Woody Stephens victor J
Be K (Silver Deputy).
Diaz, who rode Meadowlake and Black Tie Affair and
won 3,164 races while riding primarily in the Chicago
area, bought Two Item Limit for $20,000 as a yearling
in 1999 before selling her for $50,000 at auction the
following spring. Two Item Limit went on to win three
graded stakes, place in the 2001 Breeders= Cup Distaff
and two other Grade I races, and earn a shade over $1
million.
After purchasing Blind Luck for $11,000 at a yearling
sale in 2008, Diaz sold the filly privately following her
13 1/4-length debut win against claimers at Calder
Race Course. Blind Luck later became 2010=s champion
3-year-old filly after winning races such as the GI
Kentucky Oaks and GI Alabama, and earned $3.2
million over the course of her three-year career.
To stay within his budget while scouting horses at
auctions, Diaz said he focuses on horses who are
athletic instead of horses with top pedigrees or who
have perfect conformation, with Baby J being a perfect
example.

columns in the TDN Archive.
A[Baby J is] a very athletic, racy filly,@ said Diaz.
AShe=s very fluid and nice moving. That=s the kind of
horse I try to buy. Blind Luck was the same way, but
she was on the smaller side and was very gangly when
I bought her. Baby J was more mature and she always
trained forwardly. She was ready before I ever breezed
her.@
Diaz said he hoped to sell Baby J for $70,000 at
Fasig-Tipton=s Florida sale in March, but she failed to
meet her reserve when the bidding stopped at
$65,000.
AShe worked awfully good and had one of the best
gallop-outs, but the buyers didn=t like her conformation,
so they walked,@ said Diaz. AThey want them to look
like a model, but she didn=t.@
Following the auction, Diaz placed Baby J with trainer
Michelle Nihei. The retired rider said Nihei worked
tirelessly to help Baby J overcome her fear of the
starting gate, and for that he hopes the filly=s new
owner, whoever it may be, will keep her in Nihei=s barn.
AI got a lot of calls [after the race], and I hope I can
sell her to somebody who will keep her with Michelle
because she put a lot of work into her,@ said Diaz. AShe
was scared to go into the gate, so we schooled her at
the gate almost every day. She had always trained the
way you=d like to see them train, but you never know
until they actually race.@

Kaleem Shah’s TAKE CONTROL (A.P. Indy) makes his
extra-belated second start. The son of Horse of the Year and
Hall of Famer Azeri (Jade Hunter) scored first out as a

BREEDERS= GROUP FRACTURES
His Highness The Aga Khan has caused a shockwave
in the French breeding industry by resigning from the
Syndicate des Eleveurs, which serves as the country=s
breeders= association. It is believed that the move is a
direct result of the imposed changes to the longestablished and popular breeders= premiums and could
lead to further high-profile members stepping down to
form a splinter group. Among the alterations to the
scheme is the cutting of the basic rate of breeders=
premiums to 10% from the current level of 14 for foals
born in 2014. Despite the promise that it will increase
to 15% if the horse was conceived in France, the new
rule means that horses merely born and raised in the
country will enjoy the reduced amount only. The Aga
Khan=s Bloodstock Manager Georges Rimaud told Jour
de Galop, AI think that there are others apart from us
who had the same reaction to the measures which
passed the vote which don=t coincide with their vision
for breeding. If other people resign, I believe it will be
because they don=t feel represented. The position I hold
is solely mine and that of the concern that I represent. I
am not the leader of any dissident group. I only
represent the Aga Khan Studs, and we have the feeling
that we are not being listened to within the body of the
breeders= association.@

OBSERVATIONS
on today’s European racing scene
3.40 Curragh, €16,500, Mdn, 2yo, 6fT
AFONSO DE SOUSA (Henrythenavigator) starts out in the Michael
Tabor silks on ground which is certain to play against him. A bold show
from the $300,000 KEESEP yearling and half-brother to dual Classic
winner Big Brown (Boundary) will point to an above-average level of
ability. Aidan O’Brien also saddles another son of Henrythenavigator in
Susan Magnier’s colorbearer George Vancouver, a half-brother to
Saarland (Unbridled), who was fifth on debut at Navan earlier this
month.

by Shirley Heights {GB}), runner-up to Ballydoyle=s
pattern-race performer Athens (Ire) (Dylan Thomas
{Ire}) in a 10-furlong conditions event at Navan Apr. 29
before winning a handicap over this course and
distance by seven lengths June 10, was held up early
and over-raced as a result of the steady tempo. Niggled
at before the home turn, the 100,000gns TATOCT
yearling showed courage to grab the lead with 1 1/2
furlongs remaining en route to a 1 1/2-length verdict
over Buy Back Bob (Ire) (Big Bad Bob {Ire}) as the 11-4
favorite. The victor is 3/4 to Inchiri (GB) (Sadler=s

+SINANIYA (f, 2, More Than Ready--Sindirana {Ire}
{SW-Eng}, by Kalanisi {Ire}), from the extended family
of champion Sinndar (Ire) (Grand Lodge), was sent off
at 11-2 in her unveiling. She broke tardily before
showing dash to lead after a furlong. Always traveling
strongly in the hands of Johnny Murtagh, the homebred
appeared to have the race won a long way from home
and may have been tiring late to score by a diminishing
head margin from My Special J=s (Harlan=s Holiday).
AThe going is testing and Sinaniya tired a bit at the end,
but she hung on,@ trainer John Oxx told Irish Racing
Online. AI didn=t think she=d win on the ground, as both
sides of her pedigree suggest she wants it better. We
won=t be in any hurry with her and we=ll then try to get
a bit of black-type.@ Where (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}),
the daughter of Virginia Waters (Kingmambo), started
as the 4-1 second choice, and after showing
prominently out wide, could only find one pace late on
to finish sixth. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, i10,350.

REGULATION (IRE) (c, 3, Danehill Dancer {Ire}--Source
of Life {Ire}, by Fasliyev), not seen since finishing third
behind the smart Takar (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}) in a sevenfurlong maiden at Leopardstown in November, broke
well from his wide stall and settled in mid-pack. Rolling
to the front with ease passing the quarter pole, the 2-1
second favorite asserted to score by 3 1/2 lengths from

entering the final quarter mile, the 9-2 chance poached
a decisive advantage approaching the eighth pole and

ridden into second at the furlong pole and kept on
resolutely under continued urging to prevail by a length
from Mitzi Blue (Ire) (Anabaa Blue {GB}). Last Born (Fr)

FASTNET ROCK YEARLING TOPS INGLIS
The 2012 Inglis Australian Weanling and Bloodstock
Sale came to a close Friday at Newmarket in Sydney,
where A$6,476,400 ($1US=A$0.995)--up 12% on
last year=s sale--was traded on racing and breeding
stock over the past three days. The highest price during
yesterday=s session was recorded by lot 576, a colt by
Fastnet Rock (Aus) from Mis Excitabull (Holy Bull),
bringing A$100,000 from David Hayes Racing. He was
offered by Fairhill Farm. AEighty-five percent of all stock
offered in Sydney this week was sold, a great result,
and I have no doubt that given the depth of buying
bench assembled for the weanlings if we had more
quality lots entered they also would have found very
suitable new homes,@ Inglis Managing Director Mark
Webster said. AOver 80 individual buyers from all states
of Australia, as well as New Zealand, Singapore, Macau
and Hong King featured during the Select Session
Weanlings, a clear indication that the market for quality
weanlings in Australia is far more than just pinhookers.@
