AND ENJOYMENT AT HEART.
In Val Thorens, we are convinced that a successful mountain resort of the future is one that will be able to
raise its level of excellence, creating unique and sustainable relationships between their customers, the
locals and the natural environment.
«Live United», is a state of mind that is behind everything we do, a philosophy that we look forward to
sharing with 400, 000 visitors that we welcome here every year. The highest resort in

the work of forward-thinking pioneers. The 2013-2014 winter season brought recognition to Val Thorens,
whose enterprising and energetic spirit was rewarded with 5 international awards. But, with recognition
comes responsibility: it is no longer enough to merely satisfy our customers, now we need to delight each
and every one of them!
This winter, Val Thorens continues to forge ahead with new products created with well-being, living well
and customer comfort in mind; striving to surprise both those who visit, and those who work for the resort,
enabling them to discover unique and unforgettable experiences.

THE BEST OF SKIING
VAL THORENS, SKI CROSS WORLD CAPITAL
Direct confrontation, speed, fun… welcome to the world of SKI CROSS!
Recognised by the World’s best skiers as the ideal training and competition ground,
Val Thorens has become a SKI CROSS MECCA after putting two Val Thorens natives on
the Olympic podiums in Sochi: Jean-Frédéric CHAPUIS, ski cross gold-medal winner
and Chloé TRESPEUCH, snowboard cross bronze medal winner.

5 STEPS
TO LEARNING
SKI CROSS!
A STADIUM NAMED IN HONOUR OF OLYMPIC
CHAMPION JEAN-FRÉDÉRIC CHAPUIS
NEW
He masterfully led the historic triple win for France at the
Olympic Games; Jean-Frédéric Chapuis started out Alpine
skiing at Val Thorens’ Ski Club before moving over to ski
cross. The switch was a real revelation, as just 5 years after
he first started, he became the 2013 World Champion and
the following year, won the Olympic gold medal at the age
of 24. Val Thorens is one of the few resorts to be equipped
with a permanent ski cross course, which has now been
renamed the “Jean-Frédéric Chapuis Ski Cross Stadium”
in his honour.
STEP 1
Train on the champions’ stadium
Skiers can now tackle an exceptional, full-sized ski cross stadium
built alongside the World Cup run. 1.4 kilometres of thrills to
enjoy for grown-ups…, as well as for children racing alongside
their parents. Open access.
Join us for the official ceremony during the
Ski Cross World Cup on Wednesday the 10th of
December.
STEP 2 FASTEST TIME! It’s all happening!
Whenever skiers cross the start line, the micro-chipped card
underneath their jacket triggers a timer that automatically stops
when they cross the finish line. They can have several goes to try
to match champion Jean-Frédéric Chapuis’ benchmark time.
When skiers scan their ski passes at the terminal, it triggers 5
cameras that film the race all the way to the finish line, where
they can watch and download the video to their smartphone to
share on social networks, via another terminal.

STEP 3 Collect your medal
Bronze, silver, silver-gilt, gold… because of their lack of facilities,
very few resorts are able to offer a ski cross test course. Thanks
to a stadium that’s been adapted to suit beginners, Val Thorens’
ESF French Ski School lets skiers take a dedicated ski cross test
according to their ability level. The goal: beat the opener’s time!

STEP 4 Perfect your skills
The ESF French Ski School offers training conditions worthy of
high-level skiers: a specially dedicated stadium, timed trials and
personalised video guidance. Whether you’re a teenager or an
adult, progress knows no age limits. Gold star level required.

in Val Thorens Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th of
December. Come and see the champions at work.

SKIING AT THE CUTTING EDGE

As part of its ongoing quest for performance and innovation, SETAM is continuing to
modernise its ski lifts by investing 20 million euros into the ski area.

Pioneers’ gondola lift
2014
The Boismint sector has been redesigned to
provide improved skier traffic flow on the ski area.
The Plan de l’Eau chair lift has been replaced by a 6-seater
detachable chair lift. Travelling up higher than it used to,
the lift will now serve a greater vertical drop and the new
route will also provide a direct link to the Caron sector.
La Portette chair lift has been replaced by a

Val Tho’s retro flashback
improving its role as a link to the ski area’s Northern runs.
The bottom of the lift has been moved one hundred metres
down the mountain, positioning it more in the centre of the
sector’s skiing traffic.
NEW A SECOND “GREEN” SNOW GROOMER
A pioneer in environmental friendliness, last winter the
Val Thorens piste service team invested in an electric transmission
hybrid snow groomer (Kassböhrer), and this winter it will be
extending its fleet with the purchase of a 2nd “green” snow groomer.
B
The resort is installing almost-identical replicas of Péclet’s 1973
gondolas, in a lift innovation that pays homage to the resort’s
very first ski lift “eggs”. Round, colourful and utterly seventies,
these gondolas provide pedestrian access to the ski area’s
south-facing sector, as well as to the incredible Folie Douce
dance floor and restaurant… In technical terms, the lift is a
hybrid detachable 6-seater chair lift with four 4-person cabins
dotted along it. It is a SETAM innovation that has been proudly
named the ‘Pioneers’ Gondola Lift’, and will replace the existing
3V1 chair lift.

VAL THORENS, A RESORT
THAT DOES YOU GOOD
The philosophy of well-being reigns here in all its forms, around the clock:
gastronomy, bistronomy and après-ski activities. Cosmopolitan and celebratory,
Val Thorens is definitely the most epicurean of resorts!
A GOURMET RETREAT
JEAN SULPICE**
A real gourmet journey packed
with emotions and surprises
At 36 years old, twice-Michelin starred Relais & Châteaux ‘Grand Chef’
Jean Sulpice masterfully commands his eponymous restaurant with
Magali, his wife and sommelier, by his side. He offers a culinary offpiste journey inspired by local produce. Turning the mountains’ natural
resources into a delight for the taste buds, and using raw ingredients in
harmony with their natural surroundings, Jean Sulpice’s cuisine tells a
story first and foremost. Vacherin cheese rissoles, local féra freshwater
fish with a fine layer of vanilla sorrel that mimics the green glints of lake
water, not forgetting the ever-present canvas of herbs and flowers… A
real gourmet journey packed with emotions and surprises.
Chef’s recommendation: enjoy a lunch break between two ski runs with
the “first tracks” menu.

After spending more than ten years as a Relais & Châteaux Head Chef,
Eric Samson felt an urge to broaden his horizons. After gaining precious
experience with his former teacher, the famous 3 Michelin-starred Chef
Olivier Roellinger in Cancale, Brittany, he moved on to Canada, before
heading to the Hôtel Des Neiges in Courchevel, and then the Château de
Courcelles, where he obtained his first Michelin star in 2001. The following
year, he opened the “L’imaginaire” restaurant in Terrasson-Lavilledieu,
at the heart of the Dordogne and gained another Michelin star in 2004.
Today, Michelin-starred chef Eric Samson puts his talent to use in the
Koh-I Nor’s kitchens, where he creates inventive, refined winter cuisine
in keeping with the values of the hotel: convivial, luxurious, but never
ostentatious.

dining rooms
“We wanted to bring our cuisine to life and forge links between
our customers, guest chefs and local producers. We are proud
to promote them because they share our culinary values: the
quest for excellence”, Jérémy Gillon Master Restaurateur.
Nestled amongst an expanse of untouched snow, this Alpine
chalet is an authentic dining choice and must-visit destination
for anyone who wishes to understand the history of the resort’s
pioneers and sample traditional recipes. The Suchet brothers
always have an anecdote with which to regale their skiing and
hiking visitors. This winter, the chalet has been respectfully
renovated in keeping with its ancestral soul and traditional
Belleville architecture. There are three new dining rooms to
discover: the Cave, the Grange and the Laiterie, themed around
this authentic chalet’s strongly held values of family and
sharing.

discover for every hour of the afternoon.

The Folie Douce’s dance floor
FROM 4PM
“5 star” afternoon snacks at the Koh-I Nor hotel
Who hasn’t heard of La Folie Douce? At an altitude of 2,600
metres, this open-air Club is the must-visit venue for a relaxing
moment on the slopes of the 3 Vallées. A large balcony welcomes
DJs and live musicians. Overlooking the 700 m² dance floor, they
electrify the crowd with powerful vocals and a touch of ‘folie’…
We keep hearing that you have to stay active, well after a good
day’s skiing you need to eat too! Crêpes suzettes, waffles, ice cream,
chocolate mousse, a selection of fruit juices, hot chocolate… nothing
is too good to delight your little ones. One thing’s for certain, they
won’t forget this buffet of delicious sweet treats in a hurry.
OUR RECOMMENDATION: Located at the top of the Plein Sud
chair lift, it’s THE spot from which to enjoy the day’s final rays of
sun and admire the sunset.
OUR RECOMMENDATION: Sit at a table on the terrace to enjoy
one of the most beautiful panoramic views over Val Thorens’

Relaxed après-ski at the Altapura Ski Bar
FROM 6.30PM
An evening in the Chalet de la Marine’s yurt
60 pairs of multi-coloured boots, 20 pairs of skis, 200 old wooden
ski poles and 6 former chair lifts, all inventively transformed
into extravagant chandeliers, welcoming benches or bar tables!
This incredible Ski Bar offers snowsports lovers the chance to
sip a festive aperitif or a fruit juice during the day, and to warm
up with an “apple spice” on the way back from the slopes.
Nestled at the heart of the mountains, the Chalet de la Marine
invites you up on high. For a guaranteed change of scenery,
come to the Mongolian yurt on Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday nights. After climbing up on touring skis, or aboard
a snow groomer or scooter, guests can explore this authentic,
cosy and welcoming venue, enjoying a selection of delicacies
on an old-fashioned stove in the centre of the yurt. At the end
of the evening comes the surprise of uninterrupted views over
the sparkling lights of the resort at the heart of the mountains.
OUR RECOMMENDATION: Arnaud Gorini, the current owner,
offers adventurers the chance to return to the resort to the light of
torches, accompanied by a supervisor on a snow scooter.
OUR RECOMMENDATION: Try this: bar tables transformed
into fondue ‘trees’. This Alpine classic has undergone an artistic
makeover with bread, glasses and a bottle of wine hanging from
its ‘branches’.

ICE DIVING
A cool adventure
Embark on a wild adventure, just a short distance from the resort; a timeless
journey beneath the frozen Lac du Lou. After putting on a waterproof drysuit
and diving equipment (compressed neoprene drysuit, waterproof gloves, diving
mask), it’s time for 20 minutes of glacial exploration. This may not qualify as an
extreme sporting activity, but it certainly isn’t without its thrills; the adrenalin
mounts as soon as you leave the outside world and slide beneath the surface
of the ice. Feel the water around you, see how the light plays and the stream
of bubbles marking the rhythm of your own breathing - discover a whole new
world. Access the diving site on snowshoes or touring skis (40 minutes), followed
by a 30-minute ice diving session supervised by professional diving instructors
(includes equipment briefing), then it’s back to the resort on snowshoes or skis.
Open to anyone over the age of 16.
WE RECOMMEND: In the springtime, the ice is thinner and there is less snow
on the surface. This makes it more transparent so you can see glimpses of the
mountains from underneath, completely transforming the experience.
