APRIL 28 – MAY 18, 2016
ARIES (March 21 – April 19) For the most part things may
not go as planned, but consider other possibilities before you
ram your head against the wall in frustration. Other avenues
may actually be better.
TAURUS (April 20 – May 20) When you cut through all the
bull you finally know exactly what to do to get where you
want to go. Charge on.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 20) If you really were twins one of
you wouldn’t get off the couch right now. However, if you do
success and romance are right around the corner. Get up and
get busy.
CANCER (June 21 – July 22) Crawling along steadily at work
may not have paid off, until now. You’re heading for the fast
track to the top now. Expect recognition for a job well done.
LEO (July 23 – August 22) Spring is going to shower you
with opportunities, some of which seem too good to be true.
All you have to do is purr right along and let the Universe do
the rest.
VIRGO (August 23 – September 22) Work may take an
unexpected turn that has you exploring things you have never
tried before. If the Virgin is open, new possibilities will arise.
LIBRA (September 23 – October 22) Work may be off
balance when it comes to what you should do and the work
that truly pays off. Prioritize wisely.
SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21) Your tendency to
sting is as high as it is to be stung. Your people skills are being
put to the test. Remember that we are all human.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21) You’ll miss
the mark when it comes to relationships if you don’t learn
to listen. Let everyone else do the talking and think before
you speak.
CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19) Now is the time
to experiment and try new things. Your stubborn nature will
resist, but press on. You’re about to hit on great new ideas that
will prove profitable.
AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18) An important
relationship may suffer unless you allow the situation to
become water under the bridge. Moving forward is more
important.
PISCES (February 19 – March 20) Now is the time to get
ready for unexpected changes ahead. Don’t try to swim
against the current and you’ll find that you enjoy the changes
that are coming.
Eric Stoner, Fine Arts Photography instructor at Laguna
College of Art + Design, encourages his students to diversify
their talents with photography skills for artistic and financial
reasons. Eric set up an early evening scene with model in toe
at Shaw’s Cove beach and challenged his students to test
their technical skills and create the best “Laguna Vibe cover”.
Olivia Stude’s photo chosen by our staff, won the $20 gift
certificates compliments of advertisers Heidelberg Cafe, Taco
Loco, and Zeytoon Cafe.
May is in bloom so the Laguna Beach Garden Club will
showcase nine private gardens in the city’s Village
neighborhood on its annual Gate & Garden Tour, May 6,
11am-4 pm. This self guided walking tour includes nearly an
acre of magnificent grounds at a historic home. Proceeds from
this fundraiser go towards scholarships, school gardens and
community projects. $45 advance tickets; $50 tickets on day
of the tour. For information visit lagunabeachgardenclub.org
Laguna Playhouse is launching “Laguna Nights” where
residents and employees who live or work in Laguna Beach
can purchase $25 tickets and receive discounted tickets
for certain performances. The dates vary per production
and their website will specify date availability. Visit
lagunaplayhouse.com for more information.
May’s Calendar has so many things you can do to benefit
a good cause: Party at The Cliff to help habilitate marine
life; Eat like a king at “Taste of the Nation” for “No Kid Left
Hungry”; Practice the “Art of Giving” at the Boys and Girls
Club gala; Lunch with “Ladies Who
Read” to support Library programs;
Preserve our village on the “Charm
House Tour”; Keep Laguna beautiful
one garden at a time.
Come out and smell the roses!

On the Music Scene with Gary
Old School New Direction (O.S.N.D.) is made
up of some of the most talented musicians
I know. Bob Hawkins on guitar and vocals
has worked with John Stewart (The Kingston
Trio), Lindsey Buckingham and currently
with Shana Morrison, (Van’s daughter). Jelani
Jones is the keyboardist and vocalist who
can be found on stage with Common Sense,
World Anthem and Upstream. Rock Deadrick
on drums and vocals received Grammy
recognition for his work with Tracy Chapman
and Ben Harper’s band and currently plays
with Ziggy Marley. Last, but certainly not
least, Mr. John Troy, a freelance bass player
and vocalist has toured with Bonnie Raitt,
Joe Cocker and Natalie Cole. What makes
O.S.N.D. such a rare pleasure is how superb
they perform, both individually and as a
team.
On the second Thursday of each month
O.S.N.D. will perform their soulful sounds at
The Cliff Restaurant’s Fireside Lounge. When
I’m asked to describe O.S.N.D. I always say, “If
Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Eric Clapton and
a smooth groovin’ bass player jammed, that’s
O.S.N.D.”
Come out and support LIVE
Music and the musicians who
bring it to us!

Art Star Awards Turn 10!

Jorg Dubin, 2012
Much of the credit to the creation
of the Art Star Awards a decade
ago goes to Sian Poeschl and Suzi
Chauvel who envisioned an Academy
Awards for the Arts. They formed
a committee and began the “Artsy
Oscars” to celebrate and recognize
those who’ve made outstanding
contributions to the arts. [sevendegrees] owners, Dora Wexell and
Mark Orgill, have hosted the event
annually and generously fund a
$5,000 Inspiration Grant for an
artist to develop and advance their
art form over the course of the
ensuing year. Over the years there have been a variety
of themes and guest speakers like Rita Rudner, Joe
Mantegna, and high energy performances by Lee
Rocker. It’s always an amazing evening full of poignant
moments and aside from honoring artists, it’s also an
opportunity to inspire patrons and thank countless of
hard working volunteers.
This year’s 10th Annual Art Star Awards began with
an award bestowed upon Louis Longi, whose artistic
excellence for the last 10 years has created one-ofa-kind bronze sculptures as the award trophies. His
inspiration stems from the heart and his “Louie’s”
reflect that. His 30+ years in sculpture has always
been figurative; abstracting from the human form.
A “Louie” is art in and of itself, to be displayed as
opposed to a generic trophy propped on a shelf. One
year his trophies were so large winners struggled to
carry them! lagunabeacharts.org
