2007-2008 y rsit e v i n is U o n i l l I ern h t u o S Welcome Common Questions Q: What is pledging? A: Pledging is the period of orientation that all new sorority and fraternity members experience. During this time, new members will participate in weekly meetings to learn about the university and the sorority/fraternity, leadership retreats, community service projects, and activities designed to build friendships among the new members and active fraternity/sorority members. Q: What about hazing? All sororities & fraternities oppose hazing and are committed to a membership education period that instills a sense of responsibility and commitment in the new members. You should never participate in any activity that makes you feel uncomfortable. If ever in doubt, contact the Student Development Office (453-5714) or the fraternity/sorority (inter)national headquarters for more information. Q: What does it cost to join? A: Each organization is self-supported through dues charged to all members. In the first year of membership, a few one-time expenses may also be assessed. If housing is offered, Greek housing and meals are competitive with other housing options. A variety of payment plans are usually offered. Q: Will my grades be affected? A: Ideally, they should shoot way up! Academics must be your first priority. The fraternity/sorority can offer support in time management, tutoring, study enhancement and incentives, and class assistance. Q: What am I going to get out of this? A: Joining a sorority/fraternity rounds out the collegiate experience. We often say that you get a complete education in a sorority/fraternity. Being Greek means gaining lifelong friends, having leadership opportunities, participating in social and sports activities, having academic support and networking opportunities. 2 – Go Greek!
