Introducing… Brenda Suromi Les presentamos a ... Brenda Suromi KNOW NO BOUNDS Brenda earned her bachelor’s degree in the Universidad de Los Andes, Merida, Venezuela, and got a teaching job at the French Alliance, in Merida, Venezuela, where she taught drawing and painting to the community. Later she got a full-time professor position at the Universidad de Los Andes, where she taught drawing and color. While working at the university, she won a Fulbright Scholarship. She attended SIU to study a Master in Fine Arts, 2 Dimensions, Drawing and Painting. After graduating with her MFA, she returned to Venezuela where she established her own art studio, and now she works independently. Brenda’s artwork is represented by Guernica Art Gallery and Tierra y Arte Gallery in Venezuela. As an artist and a Fulbright Scholar, she selected SIU because “the Art Program at SIU is very strong. It is nationally and internationally recognized for its quality and openness to students from different backgrounds.” Her academic experience was positive: “I found the academic growth I was looking for when I got here, both, knowledge and experience. I got more selfconfidence, self-discipline and more organization in my work. I better understand my academic field and I feel well prepared to face the current job market.” The highlight of her experience at SIU was her MFA thesis show: “where I had the opportunity to show my artwork to all the SIU community and get feedback from them. The SIU community is very active and most of them attend almost all cultural events on campus.” Join us. Be a Saluki. Succeed. Brenda obtuvo su licenciatura en la Universidad de Los Andes, Mérida, Venezuela, y trabajó como profesora en la Alianza Francesa, en Mérida, Venezuela, donde impartió clases de dibujo y pintura a la comunidad. Luego obtuvo un cargo como profesora a tiempo completo en la Universidad de Los Andes, donde impartió clases de dibujo y color. Mientras trabajaba en la universidad, obtuvo una beca Fulbright. Asistió a SIU para estudiar una Maestría en Bellas Artes, bidimensional, dibujo y pintura. Después de graduarse con su maestría, regresó a Venezuela, donde estableció su propio estudio de arte, y ahora trabaja de forma independiente. La obra de Brenda está representada por la Galería de Arte Guernica y la Galería Tierra y Arte en Venezuela. Como artista y becaria de Fulbright, seleccionó SIU ya que “el programa de arte en SIU es muy sólido. Es reconocido nacional e internacionalmente por su calidad y apertura a los estudiantes de diferentes orígenes”. Su experiencia académica fue positiva: “… Encontré el crecimiento académico que estaba buscando cuando llegué aquí, en ambos conocimiento y experiencia. Desarrollé más confianza en mí misma, auto-disciplina y organización en mi trabajo. Entiendo mejor mi campo académico y me siento bien preparada para enfrentar el mercado laboral actual”. El punto culminante de su experiencia en SIU fue su muestra de tesis magistral:.”donde tuve la oportunidad de mostrar mi obra a toda la comunidad de SIU y recibir su reacción sobre mi trabajo. A $30 nonrefundable application fee for each application is required. • For admission into a Bachelor’s program, you must have a GPA of 2.0 GPA. • A minimum TOEFL score of 520 (paper) / 68 (iBT) or an IELTS Score of 6 is required. • Conditional admission is available for those students below the required TOEFL or IELTS. • No SAT is required, unless you are interested in applying for a merit scholarship award (minimum SAT score of 1170). • A financial statement must show a minimum of $37,800. • Applications are accepted year round. Undergraduate students with SAT scores over 1170 may qualify for a merit scholarship, which is the equivalent to in-state tuition. GRADUATE At SIU, you may be considered for admission to the Graduate School by applying directly to a particular degree program. You may apply online on at gradschool.siu.edu/applygrad.html. There is a required $50 nonrefundable application fee for each application submitted. • For admissions into a Master’s program, you must have a GPA of 2.7 (on a 4.0 grading scale) on the last two years of your bachelor’s degree or 3.0 on all previous graduate work. For admission to a Ph.D. program, 3.25 on all previous graduate level course work is required. • A minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper) or 80 (iBT) for international students and some citizens/ permanent residents is required. Some departments require a higher score. • Conditional admission is available in many programs. • The individual departments decide whether or not to require any of the graduate tests, such as the GRE, GMAT or MAT. Please visit the webpage of the specific department. Over 56 percent of students are funded by teaching, research, and administrative assistantships, and fellowships. These awards carry a competitive stipend and a full tuition scholarship for both in-state and out-of-state students. CENTER FOR ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGAUGE (CESL) CESL offers an alternative road to SIU for those students who need additional practice in English, academic study skills, and American culture. Housed in the Department of Linguistics, this highly regarded 8-level program offers students a solid foundation to aid in their success at SIU. There is a $30 non-refundable application fee. • Admissions is open to anyone 18 or older and who has completed high school. • Applications are accepted year round. • CESL also offers customized programs for schools, businesses, and governmental agencies. • Students enrolled in CESL may live on campus and have access to facilities (Student Center, Recreation Center, Health Center, Morris Library, etc.) • Courses in CESL: •begin at level 0 and continue to undergraduate or to graduate studies. •run for 8 weeks. •are limited to 15 students. •are held in smart classrooms or language labs.
