NAOMI N
Chennai, June 13:
Next time one were to visit the local police station, an appointment
with the Inspector of Police might
not be a tough task after all, thanks
to the recent ruling by the Commissioner of Police T K Rajendran,
which has asked Inspectors to set
aside an hour each day, to attend
public grievances at their respective police stations.
According to sources, the move
came about after it was alleged
that, Inspectors were not readily
available to meet people, in few
stations.
This issue was raised at a recent
press meet with the city Commissioner, following which an hour
in the evenings for complainants,
was made mandatory.
‘This move is welcomed by the
police department. The Inspectors
will henceforth be present to attend
to the grievances from 5 to 6 pm
each day’, said Inspector Nataraj.
Another stated that they are mostly
out on rounds during evening
hours, which is why people who
come may not get to meet them.
‘Each evening, we check for activities street-by-street. We engage
in countering chain-snatching and
other offences, checking on CCTV
cameras and their recordings. We
have duty at the court as well’,
he said.
‘We are always under public’s
scrutiny, and if we are not to be
seen on rounds for even a day,
people question us as to why we
did not come. Patrolling is important as it sends a strong message
to criminals’, he stated, adding
that the department also needs to
be in close contact with the common man.
‘With the recent order, people
will know that they can meet the
Inspector without fail if they come
at the prescribed time’, he said.
‘We will be happy to sit with them
and and attend to their complaints,
thereby extending the rounds to an
hour later’, he noted.
Meanwhile, another Inspector
rued that some petitioners, after
lodging a complaint with the police, immediately approach higher
officials. ‘This sends out a wrong
message’, he stated.
Stage set for Jaya-Modi meet
CM to urge PM to address TN’s demands Additional funds to be sought
NT Bureau
Chennai, June 13:
When Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa
meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi
in New Delhi Tuesday, she would
present a detailed memorandum to
him, highlighting various issues of
the State.
According to sources, the document would seek, among other
things, financial assistance for the
State to implement various welfare
projects, formation of Cauvery
Board, steps to find solution to Sri
Lankan Tamils issue, measures
to retrieve Katchatheevu, speedy
clearance of projects and the release of seven convicts in the Rajiv
Gandhi assassination case.
CM cell official to visit R K Nagar every week
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today said a special officer from the Chief
Minister’s Cell at the Secretariat will visit R K Nagar every Tuesday to receive
petitions from people. ‘The officer will stay at the Tondiarpet Tahsildar office
throughout the day and will get petitions from people. They will be brought
to my notice and appropriate action will be taken,’ she said in a statement.
This will be Jayalalithaa’s first visit
to Delhi after being elected Chief
Minister for the second consecutive term and for a record sixth
time. Her previous visit was in
June 2014, immediately after the
K’town crisis:
12 theatres shut
Trouble with exhibitors leads to lockdown
More cinema halls may join
M BHARAT KUMAR
Chennai, June 13:
As many as 12 cinema halls including the SSR Pankajam in Saligramam
and Ganapathiram in Adyar have
locked their gates for the last two
weeks. As a result, fans are left in
a lurch.
Apparently a feud between theatreowners and the alleged decision not
to co-operate with dozen theatres in
and around the city by Tamilnadu
Theatres Owners Association meant
that they had to temporarily shelve
screening movies.
Speaking to News Today, owner of
one of the single screens that was
shut recently, said, ‘we have been
voicing against the alleged tactics by
few theatre-owners to get big movies
screened only by them in their area.’
‘They pay huge sum to screen the
film and due to demand, hike the
ticket fare. But they cry foul that they
suffered loss and seek compensation form producers and actors. We
opposed the same’.
Also we gave a written representation to Thiruvallur district Collector
not to allow permission for special
shows on the day of release for big
releases and it added to our trouble,
he said.
‘When several screens in Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur district did not
screen Theri, a few including the
dozen screens that are shut now
went ahead and released the movie.
However officials of the association
including Pannerselvam are punishing us by issuing a no-coperation
order. We are now forced to close
our theatres’.
The lives of hundreds employed in
our theatres are at stake, he added.
He said further, ‘Theri issue was
sorted out by its producer and theatre
owners. And we wonder why we are
punished for it now’.
With Rajinikanth starrer Kabali set
for release soon, we want the issue
to be sorted out amicably. We have
no option but to represent the issue
with the State government’.
Two mishaps in city
MTC bus hits auto driver at Velacheri
Car rams into signal at Nandambakkam
NT Bureau
Chennai, June 13:
Two road mishaps that left two
men injured, were reported in the
city since yesterday, In the first incident, an MTC bus suffered a break
failure and rammed into three auto
rickshaws and a car in Velacheri last
night. It also damaged a compound
wall nearby.
According to the police, Sathish (36)
from Villupuram was driving an MTC
bus 570 (Thiruporur to Koyambedu),
on the Dhandeeswaram Road, near
the police station, when he steered to
a side to make way for a vehicle from
the opposite side to pass.
However, owing to a break failure, Sathish lost control of the bus,
thereby ramming it into three autos
and car. It also crashed into a TNEB
compound wall. An auto driver Ramanujam from Pallikaranai who
fractured his limbs in the mishap, was
admitted to a hospital.
In a separate incident at Nandambakkam near MIOT Hospital this
morning, a car rammed into a traffic
amilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa will visit New
Delhi tomorrow where she will meet Prime Minister
Narendra Modi and urge him to look into the State’s
demands.
Establishment of the Cauvery Management Board,
resolution of water disputes with neighbouring states
and generous financial assistance are some of the key
demands expected to be placed before the Union government when Jayalalithaa meets the Prime Minister.
Putting an end to Sri Lankan Navy arresting Indian fishermen hailing from Tamilnadu, extension of Metro rail services and implementation of final award of the Cauvery
Water Disputes Tribunal are other demands expected to
be part of the memorandum that Jayalalithaa would submit to Modi.
In the US, the shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando
which left 50 dead and 53 wounded, has sparked outrage.
The killer, 29-year-old Omar Mateen was a body builder
and a security guard, a religious man who attended the
local mosque and wanted to become a police officer.
Reports said he was allegedly infuriated over seeing two
men kissing in Miami recently.
Law enforcement officials have labelled the attack as
an act of domestic terrorism, saying Mateen had called
911 once the attacks began and swore allegiance to the
Islamic State terror group, the New York Times reported.

victory of the NDA government.
The Chief Minister will undertake a
day’s trip to New Delhi on Tuesday
to meet Modi and discuss crucial
issues relating to Tamilnadu. During her visit, she is also likely to
meet Finance Minister Arun Jaitley
while a few other Union Ministers
are expected to call on her at the
Tamilnadu House.
Jayalalithaa is expected to point
out to the Prime Minister that it has
been more than three years since
the Union government notified the
final award of the Cauvery Water
Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) on sharing the waters of the Cauvery system
among the basin States of Karnataka,
Tamilnadu, and Kerala and Union
territory of Puducherry. However, the
Cauvery Management Authority has
not yet been established.
The CWDT had on 5 February,
2007 awarded 419 tmc ft of water to
Tamilnadu, 270 tmcft to Karnataka
270 tmcft, 30 tmcft to Kerala and
seven tmcft to Puducherry.
Last week, a State government
press release announced Jayalalithaa’s Delhi visit and said:
‘The Chief Minister will be leaving Chennai for New Delhi on
the morning of 14 June and will
call on the Prime Minister and
discuss important issues relating
to Tamilnadu.’
She will be returning to Chennai the
same day, the release said.
A meeting between the two took
place last August when Modi had
visited Tamilnadu.
IS claims responsibility
for Orlando attack
Says Omar Mateen was ‘soldier of the caliphate’
Washington, June 13 :
In a major development in Orlando
shooting incident, Islamic State (IS)
terrorist group has claimed the responsibility for the attack.
In a message published on the
group’s semi-official news agency,
Amaq, it described gunman Omar
Mateen as a ‘soldier of the caliphate’.
In the worst mass shooting in US
history, at least 50 people were killed
and 53 others injured when a ‘lone wolf’
gunman opened fire early on Sunday
in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
Idol smuggling
case: Courier firm
under scanner
NT Bureau
Chennai, June 13:
In a new twist to the idol
smuggling case, a courier company based out of
Thiruvananthapuram has
come under the scanner,
for allegedly aiding in smuggling antiques from Mumbai
to Chennai via Thiruvananthapuram.
According to sources, idols
that were reported to be
missing from northern States
such as Mumbai, UP and
Bihar, have been found to
be transported to Chennai,
through the said courier company. Following the reveal,
a team of police from the
city is said to be leaving to
the neighbouring capital for
further investigations.
This comes after two consecutive days of raids at
Venus Colony in Alwarpet,
that led to the seizure of 150
idols and 50 paintings.
The exquisite sculptures
mostly belong to the Hoysala period are allegedly
sourced from temples in
south India. Meanwhile, the
HR & CE (Hindu Religious
and Charitable Endowments) has asked temples
in Tamilnadu to file reports
on missing idols.
It may be noted that
the case has caught the
attention of the entire
state, ever since the Idol
wing-CID of the Economic
Offences Wing (EOW)
seized over 100 idols
in a major crack down
at a house owned by
octogenarian smuggle
Deenadayalan (who later
surrendered) at Alwarpet.
Modi shocked over shooting
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
expressed shock over the shooting at the night club in Orlando.
Modi had tweeted, ‘Shocked at
the shootout in Orlando, USA. My
thoughts & prayers are with the
bereaved families and the injured.’
Although the statement did not clarify Mateen’s relation to the group, but
the language appeared to suggest he
was viewed as a lone wolf attacker.
A state of emergency has been de-
clared in Florida. The gunman Omar
Mateen, 29, was killed by a SWAT
team after he took hostages at Pulse, a
popular gay night club. He was armed
with an assault rifle, a handgun and an
unspecified ‘device’, said officials.
‘It appears he was organised and
well-prepared,’ Orlando Police Chief
John Mina said. Officials said the
killings were likely to be ideologically motivated, though there was
no information that the gunman was
associated with a particular group.

skills in the 19th national sub-junior and first inter-State challenger
sprint championship at the stateof-the-art SRASSC Water Sports
Centre at the Sri Ramachandra
University campus.
The gleaming waters at the new
facility became the venue for the
rowers to display their skills. For
those training at the SRASSC, it
was an opportunity to translate
the hard work put in by themselves
and the coaches into success and
medals.
According to T S Sivasubramanyam, secretary, SWSC, it was a

‘A very good performance by the
(TN) rowers, I should say,’ he
told News Today. He rated the
performance of Marian Belindda
and Jothika, who won a bronze
in the under-13 doubles sculls as
very creditable. They only took up
rowing some three months ago
and winning a medal at a national
event is commendable, Sivasubramanyam chuckled.
He also said Tamilandu had some
talented swinners including Saketh
Reddy, the team captain, who will
be graduating from sub-juniors to
junior level next year.
Also, the SWSC secretary said
that the Tamilnadu lasses lost the
fours event in a close contest.
He had words of praise for coach
Nithya, a former international, who
has won medals at various levels.
‘She is doing a very good job as
a coach and knows how to handle
the youngsters and imparts quality
training.’

With a rare collection of clocks, watches,
Chennaiite eyes record books
An interesting fact is
that the Suriya movie

shot with Kennedy’s
clocks. He was reportedly offered Rs 10 lakh
as rent but he turned
down the offer because
he didnt want to disturb the arrangement of
clocks.
His collections are
mostly made of iron.
The purity of it is so
high that none of it has
rusted till date.
There is an anniversary
clock which needs to be
wound only once a year.

Chennai, June 13:
This man’s heart ticks with the sound
of clocks. For Robert Kennedy, a resident of
Kodambakkam, time pieces and clocks are like
children and he has dedicated his house to them.
He is a realtor by profession but a ‘watch-smith’
by passion. A visit to his house gives one the feel
of visiting a museum of rare collectibles. Clocks that
date back to the year 1700 and those from 1950s are
prized possessions. Some of his treasures include
model of steam engine, weighing machine, coffeemakers, world’s first model of wall clocks, carriage
clocks, pocket watches, lanterns, Belgium chocolate
mould and printers that are more than 100 years old
and in working condition.
With a monthly maintenance of Rs 25,000 and
four hours of dedicated time to clean the ornaments, the mini-museum is maintained by him
with a lot of care. He has collections from
10 different countries like France, Russia,
England and Germany among others.

such rare pieces as mine,’ he
asserted.
The total worth of his collectibles being Rs nine crore, he guards them like his
own children. ‘Once in a while I key the clocks
and that day all of them will be ticking audibly. A
normal person cannot stand the sound for more
than an hour but I can peacefully sleep there considering it a lullaby,’ he proudly says.
His love for clocks started when his father brought
in a grandpa clock that was gifted by the English to his
grandfather. ‘My father used to narrate stories about
how in those days people came to his house to see
the time. I was thrilled whenever the clock was keyed.
There started my love story,’ Kennedy said.
Thirty-three years of collection and more years to
come, his collections would be converted into a
trust museum soon. ‘This is to make sure that my
descendants don’t misuse my treasure and the
valuables can be conserved with reverence,’
he said.
He is keen to get his name etched
in the record books.

ORGANIC FARMING TAKING ROOT
Retired teacher goes all out to create awareness on natural methods
S BEN RAJA
Chennai, June 13:
Organic farming and products
have been in the news for a
while now with some even going
for it in a full-fledged manner. It
is evident in the suburbs where
a few have taken up organic
farming in a big way.
Resource recovery parks in
Perungalathur and Mudichur
started by the NGO, Hand in
Hand, are good examples.
Following the same philosophy, Radha Rani, a retired
teacher from a government
school has set up an organic
garden surrounding her house.
This reporter caught up with her
to find out about organic farming
and it’s benefits.
Asked how she developed an
interest in the field and started
a garden at her house, she, ‘We
are basically an agricultural
family. My father as well as my
father-in-law have been cultivating crops in our hometown
in Kumbakonam for the past
50 years. We naturally started

Stating that the family had been
living in Perungalathur for some
20 years, she had right from the
beginning they had been maintaining trees and plants.
About maintaining the garden,
Radha has a word of advice:
Keeping watering it now and

get fresh nutrients. Also to keep
pests away, spray a mixture of

Radha further said frequent
cleaning is more than enough
to keep pests away.
She had some advice to people willing to set up a home

Drugs in Punjab
U
dta Punjab and the controversy surrounding the infamous cuts
recommended by the censor board may have had a political
motivation but it has served a useful purpose --- bringing into sharp
focus on the serious problem of drug abuse and unbridled liquor
consumption in Punjab.
It is no accident that one of India’s most progressive states is in an
utter mess with major chunk of young men consuming drugs in a big
way. All over the border villages, there are needles and syringes that
lie strewn around in the fields with men, mostly young, in pathetic
state, many of them in no condition to work and tend to the fields.
Mysteriously, the border districts of Punjab where prosperity was
all-pervasive and young men joined the army in droves have been
hit by the drugs thunderbolt. If the country and State’s establishment
are not viewing the menace with due seriousness it is downright
foolishness and myopia.
Considering that almost all the heroin comes to Punjab through the
Pakistan border, pumped in by smugglers allegedly aided by ISI,
there is grave danger in trying to mask the evil and in shielding
the bigwigs in Punjab who provide protection to the smugglers for
monetary gains.
It was this smuggler network that the terrorists who attacked the
Pathankot airbase were believed to have used. According to an
NGO website, the rate of heroin abuse among 15 to 25-year-olds
in the border districts of Punjab is as high as 75%. Since Assembly
elections are due in Punjab next year and the Akali-BJP government
fears that any adverse publicity could ruin whatever chances it has of
coming back to power, it has a stake in underplaying the drugs issue.
The State is indeed going downhill rapidly with little seriousness
to stem the tide. It is not just drugs that are driving the youth in the
state, the yearly consumption of alcohol in Punjab is touching 29
crore bottles making it one of the highest per capita consumers of
alcohol in the world! It is deemed to be a status symbol to serve and
consume liquor in huge quantities and the youth are sucked into this
habit as early as when they are at their most vulnerable age.
We may pin all blame on Pakistan which doubtlessly is playing a
sinister game by abetting the drugs menace, the cold reality is that the
State’s youth can hardly be absolved of blame. They have forsaken
their age-old reputation as bravehearts and martyrs and are going
obsessively after money and superficiality, throwing all norms of
morality to the winds. Culture is an obvious casualty. The time to
act is now or else it would be too late. Punjab must be saved from
the drug mafias.

Deadliest mass

Obama denounces Orlando incident as an act of terror & hate
Reignites debates over gun law
WASHINGTON:
The obnoxious mass shooting at
Orlando nightclub, which resulted
in the death of 50 people and left
at least 53 injured, has proven the
deadliest attack in the history of
modern America after the 9/11 tragedy.
This wanton killing was reportedly perpetrated by Omar Mateen
(29), a US citizen from Port St Lucie, whose family hailed from Afghanistan. While the authorities are
still investigating whether Mateen
had inclination towards the radical Islamism, the so-called Islamic
State has claimed the responsibility for this mindless violence inside
the club in Orlando, Florida, as the
Islamic State-linked Arabic news
agency A’amaq has revealed. Notably, the massacre of Orlando had

Mateen, a 29-year-old security
guard who was born in New York
to Afghan parents, called 911 after
his initial assault on the dance club
to pledge allegiance to the leader of
the Islamic State Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, law enforcement officials were
quoted as saying by media reports.
During the call, he also mentioned
the Boston bombers -- Tsarnaev
brothers, who carried out the Boston
Marathon bombings in 2013.
Mateen, who carried an assault rifle and a pistol into the gay club in
Orlando in the wee hours of Sunday
and killed 50 people while injuring
53 others, was later shot dead by
the police.
Mateen had twice been
interviewed by FBI agents, in
2013 and 2014, after making
comments to co-workers
indicating he supported militant
groups, but neither interview led
to evidence of criminal activity
ties recently perpetrated by Islamic
State in Paris and Brussels.

Trump calls for Obama’s resignation
Republican White House contender Donald
Trump has called on President Barack Obama to
resign for not using the term ‘radical Islamic terrorism’ to describe the gay club massacre even as his
Democratic rival Hillary Clinton backed redoubling
of efforts to defeat terror groups.
In another tweet, Trump claimed that Mateen shouted ‘Allah hu Akbar!’ as he
slaughtered clubgoers. The police, however, is yet to corroborate this claim
of Trump.
Empire State Building goes dark
New York’s Empire State Building went dark while the
spire of One World Trade Center lit up in the colours of the
gay pride flag in memory of the victims of the Orlando massacre.
The symbolic move came as the United States mourned
the 50 victims of the worst mass shooting in modern US history, gunned down at a gay club in the Florida city.
In the wake of the attack by a heavily armed assailant,
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that all flags
would be flown at half-staff in the largest US city and that
security measures have been strengthened, in particular around places associated with the LGBT community.
De Blasio told reporters that the shooting that also left dozens injured was
‘against our values.’

Merkel pushes rule of law,
market access in China
BEIJING:
German Chancellor Angela Merkel
stressed the role of an independent
judiciary and the need for a level
playing field for foreign firms as she
begun her ninth trip to China since
taking office.
Merkel arrived in China on Sunday
amid growing pressure from industry
and rights groups to confront the
Chinese more forcefully.
The Chinese government is
overseeing a broad crackdown on
rights groups and activists, and is
facing complaints from foreign firms
about market access restrictions.
Speaking to students at a Beijing
university, Merkel explained the
importance of real rule of law.
‘This means the
judiciary decides
according to the laws
and legislation of the
country independently
of politics, and
everyone is equal before the law.
That means court procedures and
rulings have to be transparent,’ she
said.
‘If interpreted in this way, rule of
law strengthens the trust of citizens
in state institutions and its decisions.
And thereby also strengths the social
stability of a country.’
China’s courts are controlled by
the ruling Communist Party, though
President Xi Jinping is trying to
improve the rule of law and get
ordinary people to resolve their
grievances via the courts rather than
taking to the streets.
Foreign companies also need a
good legal framework, Merkel added.
‘As we see it, a legal framework for
companies also has to be designed
in such a way that foreign companies
enjoy the same rights and privileges
as domestic companies, for example
as regards public tenders, the
effective protection of brands and
patents and data.’
Donald Trump
‘Is President Obama going to finally mention the
words radical Islamic terrorism? If he doesn’t he should immediately resign in
disgrace!’ Trump said in a series of tweets as he slammed the US President
for not blaming radical Islam for the terror attack by the lone Afghan-origin
gunman Omar Mateen at a public bar in Orlando that claimed at least 50 lives.
‘He’s coming. I’m gonna die’:
Love and prayers for the people of
Orlando.God give strength to all the
victims,families and friends.Let’s all stand
tall against terrorism.
US citizen who was the son of immigrants from Afghanistan and had
twice been questioned by FBI agents
in recent years, authorities said.
Mateen’s former wife described
him as emotionally and mentally
disturbed with a violent temper, yet
who aspired to be a police officer.
He also worked as an armed guard
for the security firm G4S, the world’s
largest, according to the company.
The shooting was nearly certain
to reignite emotional debates over
American gun laws and homeland
security in what is shaping up to be
a vitriolic US presidential campaign
between Democrat Hillary Clinton
and Republican Donald Trump.
UN chief condemns
shooting
UN Secretary-General Ban Kimoon has condemned the ‘horrific’
mass shooting at a gay nightclub
in Orlando that claimed at least 50
lives.
‘The Secretary-General condemns
the horrific attack this morning in
Orlando, Florida, in which dozens
of people were killed and injured,’
a statement issued by Ban’s spokesperson said.
‘He extends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims
and expresses his solidarity with the
Government
and
people
Ban Ki-moon
of the United
States,’
the
statement said. The suspect in the
deadliest mass shooting in the history of the US has been identified
as 29-year old Omar Mateen, a New
York-born man of Afghan descent.
The casualties far exceeded those
of the 2007 shooting at Virginia
Tech, where 32 people were killed,
and the 2012 shooting at an elementary school in Newtown where 26
people died.
Poll campaigns postponed
US Presidential hopefuls Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have postponed
their respective poll campaigns in the aftermath of America’s deadliest mass
shooting in Orlando, offering prayers and support to the
victims of the horrific massacre.
‘Because of the tragic attack in Orlando, the 15 June Hillary for America campaign event with President Obama will be postponed,’ the Hillary Campaign
said.
The event in Wisconsin would have been the first joint appearance of President Barack Obama and Hillary, 68, after the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee was endorsed by the US President last week. The former secretary of state pushed for gun control and reached out to the LGBT community.
‘To the LGBT community: please know that you have millions of allies across
our country. I am one of them,’ she tweeted.
Mina Justice was sound asleep when she received the first text from her
son, Eddie Justice, who was in the gay nightclub when a gunman opened
fire, leaving 50 dead and more than 50 wounded. This is the conversation
she had over text message with her
30-year-old son:
‘Mommy I love you,’ the first message said. It was 2:06 am.
‘In club they shooting.’
Mina Justice tried calling her
30-year-old son. No answer.
Alarmed and half awake, she
tapped out a response.
‘U ok’
At 2:07 am, he wrote: ‘Trapp in
bathroom.’
Justice asked what club, and he
responded: ‘Pulse. Downtown. Call
police.’
Then at 2:08: ‘I’m gonna die.’
Now wide awake, Justice dialed 911. She sent a flurry of texts over the
next several minutes.
‘I’m calling them now. U still in there Answer our damn phone Call me.’
The 911 dispatcher wanted her to stay on the line. She wondered what
kind of danger her son was in. He was normally a homebody who liked to
eat and work out. He liked to make everyone laugh. He worked as an accountant and lived in a condo in downtown Orlando.
‘Lives in a sky house, like the Jeffersons,’ she would say. ‘He lives rich.’
She knew he was gay and at a club - and all the complications that might
entail. Fear surged through her as she waited for his next message.
At 2:39 am, he responded: ‘Call them mommy Now.’
He wrote that he was in the bathroom.
‘He’s coming I’m gonna die.’
An Indiana man armed with three assault rifles and chemicals used to
make explosives was arrested in Southern California and told police he
was headed to a West Hollywood gay pride parade, an event that annually
draws hundreds of thousands of people, authorities said.
The yesterday’s arrest in Santa Monica of James Wesley Howell, 20, of
Jeffersonville, came just a few hours after at least 50 people were shot and
killed in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, though police said they had
found no evidence of a connection between the events.
The LA Pride event continued as usual, albeit with increased security. Los
Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced the arrest at the start of the parade
and struck a defiant tone.
‘We are here as Angelenos, as the LGBT community and allies,’ he said.
‘And we will not shrink away, we will not be stuck in our homes, we will not
go back into our closets. We’re here to march, to celebrate and to mourn.’
Howell was arrested around 5 AM after residents called police to report
suspicious behaviour by a man who parked his white Acura sedan facing
the wrong way. When officers arrived they saw an assault rifle sitting in
Howell’s passenger seat, Santa Monica police Lt Saul Rodriguez said.

Audi India Motorsport racer Aditya Patel and squash

at Chennai Saturday.
NT Bureau
Chennai, June 13:
Luxury car maker Audi
launched its flagship model,
the R8 V10 Plus in Chennai
on Saturday, following its
launch in Bengaluru, a few
days ago. Starting from
Rs 2.6 crore, ex-showroom
Tamilnadu, this Audi R8 V10
Plus directly competes with
the Lamborghini Huracan
and the likes.
Speaking at the launch,
Audi India head Joe King,
said, ‘The previous model
was already the sporty vanguard of the brand. The
newly conceptualised highperformance sports car has
been made even tauter and
stronger, both on and off the
race track’.
Present on the occasion
were Audi Chennai manager
Hari Hara Sudhan, Audi India Motorsport racer Aditya
Patel, squash player Dipika
Pallikal among others. Aditya Patel and Dipika Pallikal
drove the car to the stage.
‘A high-revving mid-engine
with superior performance,
a consistently light-weight
construction concept and an
extremely dynamic chassis
with quattero drive system
and variable torque control are those things which
make the Audi R8 V10 Plus
a spearhead,’ King added.
The Audi R8 V10 Plus is
powered by a 10 cylinder,
5200cc engine belting out
a staggering 610 Horse
power. It does 100 kmph
from standstill in just 3.2
seconds with a top speed
in excess of 330 kmph. The
notable aspect is that, this
Audi R8 V10 Plus shares
50 per cent of its components with it’s race-spec
replica, the Audi R8 LMS,
it is learnt.
The power is transmitted
through Audi’s flagship, FSI
quattro four-wheel-drive
automatic transmission
which enables ultra fast
gear shifts and continuous
power transmission. The
naturally aspirated midengine has ‘cylinder on
demand’ technology which
automatically shuts down
five of the 10 cylinders
when too much power is
not needed.
Audi has loaded the car
with features and safety
equipments to the brim
with some high-tech equipments on offer. The interior
features a monoposto cockpit design with everything
focused on the driver.
‘The car also has six airbags on offer, thus taking
safety to a whole new level’,
the officials said.

Britain’s Lewis Hamilton won the

‘Float like a butterfly, sting like a

Stand-in centre back Shkodran
Mustafi headed his first goal for Germany and Bastian Schweinsteiger
scored in stoppage time as the world
champions survived several scares to
beat Ukraine 2-0 in their opening Euro
2016 Group C match on Sunday.
Mustafi, who started in the absence
of regular centre back Mats Hummels, rifled home a header after 19
minutes to give Germany the lead,
which was not extended until Schweinsteiger, a 90th-minute substitute,
swept home from close range.
Germany, bidding for a fourth Euro
triumph but first since 1996, dominated possession, but also relied on
three top saves from keeper Manuel
Neuer and a goal-line clearance by
Jerome Boateng to come out on top.
Ukraine, playing in their second
European championship, harried and
hustled their opponents and their tight
defence offered few clear sights of
goal to the Germans.
Yet lone striker Roman Zozulya was
unable to offer much threat, except

egastar Amitabh Bachchan feels to
increase awareness regarding education, it is an absolute must to make women
and daughters of the country educated.
The 73-year-old actor said he keeps contributing to the cause of women education as he
believes it is extremely important.
Money anyone can steal but knowledge
cannot be stolen from you. Hence I believe,
to increase awareness regarding education,
it is extremely important to make women and
daughters educated. And I keep contributing
towards this cause in my own way, Bachchan
said at an event. The Piku actor unveiled new
learning management system app Robomate+
powered by MT Educare.
The app enables self learning and academic
upgradation through assessments for students of all categories. Many incidents have inspired me in my life... I feel knowledge is that shield which will
protect you from difficulties without any weapons. Never stop learning, because
learning never stops, he added.
Amitabh Bachchan, who said he often wishes to go back to school and college to gain more knowledge, advised many young students present at the
venue to study in such a way that they remember it for lifetime.

‘Udta Punjab’ cleared with 13 cuts: Nihalani
T
he censor board has cleared
the controversial drugthemed Bollywood film Udta Punjab with 13 cuts under the ‘A’ category, its chairman Pahlaj Nihalani
said today.
We have today cleared Udta
Punjab under A (restricted for
adult audience) category after 13
cuts, Nihalani told reporters on the
sidelines of a function here.
Nihalani, who was in the eye of
the storm over suggesting a very
large number of cuts, said nine
members of the Central Board of
Film Certification watched the film
and unanimously cleared it after
the proposed 13 cuts.
The CBFCs job is now over. It is
now up to the producer to go to the
court or tribunal. We will implement
the order,’ Nihalani said.
The Abhishek Chaubey-directed
film is tentatively scheduled for
release on 17 June.
The CBFC’s revising commit-
tee had suggested a number of
changes in the movie, which stars
Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor-Khan and Diljit Dosanjh,
and deals with the problem of drug
addiction among youth in Punjab.
Meanwhile, responding to a
query, Nihalani, who has been
criticised by the film fraternity for
his dictatorial attitude said, those
call me cheap are themselves
‘ghatia’ (lowly)’.
Nihalani clarified that he never
called himself as chamcha (sycophant) of Prime Minister Narendra
Modi.
There is nothing wrong in admiring the Prime Minister. I never said
(I am) a chamcha,’ he said.
The makers of the movie, Phan-
tom Films had approached the
Bombay High Court against an
order of the revising committee
of CBFC that suggested certain
changes in the film.
A string of changes proposed
included removing a signboard
mentioning Punjab and other suggestions.
The HC had on Friday said that
the makers of Udta Punjab should
tone down expletives and vulgar
scenes as these alone cannot
make a film work.
A division bench had concluded
hearing arguments on the petition
and is expected to pass order in
the case tomorrow.
