Saints Sahag and Mesrob
Imaging what it would be like if you could not read! A lot of
information would be missing from your life. Now, imagine
what it would be like for a whole country to not be able to
read.
That's the way it was for Armenians before the Saints Sahag
and Mesrob came along. Armenians had the spoke Armenian
language, but there was no alphabet, no letters to write it
down. So they could speak Armenian to each other, but when
it came to writing something down, or reading from a book,
they had to do it in another language.
St. Mesrob was a monk who saw how badly the Armenians
needed their own alphabet so they could be stronger and stay
together. An alphabet would also help the church teach
Armenians about God in their own language. Tradition says
that St. Mesrob was thinking about this problem in a cave
when suddenly the hand of God appeared and wrote the
alphabet in letters of fire on the wall of the cave. It was that
important!
After St. Mesrob discovered the alphabet, St. Sahag, who was
Catholicos at the time, helped to translate books into
Armenian and to open schools to teach people how to read and
write in their own language. Do you know what the very first
book they translated was? It was the Bible.

The new priests are ready to carry out Christ’s mission,
Archbishop Barsamian said, reminding them of Christ’s
commission to the Apostles: “Go therefore and make disciples
of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey
everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am
with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)
“The role of the Armenian priest is very important,”
Archbishop Barsamian added. “With his words, with his
preaching, with his ministry, the priest shares Christ’s
message – the message of peace, the message of love, the
message of friendship.”
Archbishop Barsamian Ordains 27
Priests In Armenia
Archbishop Barsamian also congratulated His Holiness
Karekin II and expressed his wish for the continuing renewal
and prosperity of the Armenian Church.
Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the Diocese of the
Armenian Church of America (Eastern), ordained 27 deacons
to the holy priesthood on Sunday, July 19, at St. Gregory the
Illuminator Cathedral in Yerevan.
Archbishop Barsamian performed the ordination at the
invitation of His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch
and Catholicos of All Armenians, who presided over the
Divine Liturgy on that day.
A total of 18 deacons were ordained as married priests, and
nine deacons were ordained as celibate priests in what was the
largest ordination in the recent history of the Armenian
Church. The day also marked the Feast of Transfiguration of
Our Lord Jesus Christ.
More than 1,500 people attended the inspiring service,
including Mr. Tigran Sargsyan, Prime Minister of the
Republic of Armenia, government officials, and other
dignitaries.
Garbed in blue deacons’ vestments, the candidates approached
the altar as a group, on their knees. With the deacons kneeling
with hands raised parallel to their heads, Archbishop
Barsamian asked the congregation if they deemed the
candidates worthy to serve as priests of the Armenian Church.
This ritual – one of the most memorable parts of an ordination
service – invites the participation of the faithful. Many left
their pews to get a closer look at the special ceremony, lifting
up small children and reaching over the crowd to snap the
occasional photograph.
Archbishop Barsamian next placed his hands on each deacon’s
head – performing the “laying on of hands” which binds all
priests of the Armenian Church into the “apostolic succession”
that links priests through the generations back to the Apostles
Thaddeus and Bartholomew, who brought Christianity to
Armenia in the first century.
“It is moving for both the clergy and the laity to witness 27
deacons committing themselves to the service of God,”
Archbishop Barsamian said. “We are grateful to God, and we
pray that He may grant these new priests the blessings of the
Holy Spirit, and guide and inspire them in their ministry.”
The newly ordained priests gave their first blessings to the
faithful at the St. Gregory Cathedral. Following the service,
they lined up at the foot of the altar, greeting friends and
family and again offering their blessings. His Holiness and the
members of the Brotherhood of Holy Etchmiadzin
congratulated the new priests, kissing their foreheads and
hands.
The day’s Divine Liturgy and ordination service were
broadcast live on Armenian Public Television (Channel 1),
with assistance from Holy Etchmiadzin and the Shoghakat TV
Company.
In the evening, Archbishop Barsamian granted the nine
celibate priests the veghar – the monastic cowl, or hood –
during a service at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. Upon
taking the oath of celibacy and signing the oath of fidelity, the
nine priests became members of the Brotherhood of Holy
Etchmiadzin.
Following the traditional 40-day seclusion period of fasting,
meditation, and prayer, the new priests will be appointed to
serve in different dioceses of the Armenian Church or at
various departments of the Holy See.
Archbishop Barsamian then removed the deacons’ stoles and
placed these around their necks, symbolically bestowing on
them the responsibilities of the priesthood. As the deacons
stepped forward one by one, Archbishop Barsamian
consecrated their foreheads and their right and left hands with
Holy Chrism (Muron). In the course of this consecration, each
deacon was assigned a new priestly name.
“We believe that you who are the loyal and faithful servants of
God are ready to dedicate yourselves to the Armenian people,
to the Armenian Church, to our homeland, and to the Mother
See of Holy Etchmiadzin,” Archbishop Barsamian said during
his sermon.

Pastor’s Message
Parish Council Corner
Though summer is often viewed as a time when activities in a
parish slow down somewhat, I have found that we have still
had many worthwhile activities during this time.
• The ACYOA had a very successful Yard Sale on June 13 to
raise funds to support the Noubarashen Orphanage. Special
thanks to Armen & Sonya Janigian and Steve & Rena
Megrdichian and the many volunteers who helped to make this
project a success.
• On June 14, we followed with our annual Church Picnic.
Our sincere thanks to Melanie Krikorian and Zita Butler who
co-chaired the picnic and worked along with the countless
volunteers who are always needed to make these functions
successful.
“The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter
seed upon the ground, and should sleep and rise
night and day, and the seed should sprout and
grow, he knows not how. The earth produces of
itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain
in the ear.” Mark 4:26-28
Dear Faithful,
Toward the end of the school year the Sunday School had a
class project of planting basil seeds into pots. When they were
done they brought a beautiful terra cotta pot with some seeds
in it to my office. I put it in the window of my office and
watered it regularly and after about a week I saw the plants
starting to sprout. After the plants had grown as much as they
possibly could indoors, I knew it was time to move the plant
outside. When I did so, under the bright outdoor sunshine, the
plant literally doubled in size overnight. I knew it was time to
put it into a bigger pot so the roots could spread and the basil
could grow to full size.
I am not an expert gardener. Far from it, but this little project
taught me some valuable lessons: to see the results it takes
hope, faith, discipline and patience. It takes good soil and the
right combination of water and sunlight for a plant to be
nourished and grow as a living organism.
The Armenian Church is also a living organism and it takes a
similar kind of nurturing and care for it to grow. The seeds of
faith were planted by Christ Himself two thousand years ago
when He said to the first of His apostles, “Follow me.” For
centuries, men and women of faith have heard this call and
answered it. In following Christ, they watered the seeds and it
grew into a tree of faith, with its roots firmly established in the
rich soil of our Holy Tradition. That faith continues to grow
and flourish here at Sts. Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Church
in Providence, Rhode Island. However, for it to truly reach its
potential we must all do our part. If we contribute the lifegiving rain of our commitment and dedication and spread the
warming sunlight of enthusiasm and appreciation, we will be
amazed by the growth that God gives and the blessings that He
bestows upon us.
With blessings,
Der Sahak Kaishian
Interim Pastor

August/September 2009
• This summer has seen three of our young men attend the St.
Nersess Deacon’s Training Sessions. One young woman is
attending a post high school conference and serving as staff
for the Junior High School conference
• Fourteen of our children have participated in our Diocese’s
St. Vartan Camp this summer along with our Pastor Der Sahak
who was able to volunteer his services to the campers.
• On Wednesdays during the summer we will continue the
series “Knowing our Church and Living Her Holy Teachings”.
• On August 9, there will be an ACYOA Junior Pool Party that
will enable our children to get together and also to meet the
newest members of the ACYOA.
• On August 16, there will also be an ACYOA Seniors Pool
Party.
• During the past few months the Parish Council and Diocesan
Delegates have been having special “Vision & Planning”
Meetings for the purpose trying to find new and more creative
ways for us to help serve our church.
These are just a few of the activities that our church has had
during the “quiet time “ of our summer months as we prepare
for another very busy fall and winter. This may be a good
time to remind our parishioners that we are constantly looking
for people to volunteer their time, treasure, and talents to our
church. With the coming of fall we will be having the start of
our Sunday School, Armenian School, and Arts Education
Program.
We will be having major events such as a Golf Tournament
(Sept. 14), Cultural Committee Gala Concert (Sept. 26),
Church Name Day (Oct. 18), Church Bazaar (Nov. 14 &15),
and the ACYOA Christmas Dance (Nov. 28). We welcome
your support and participation in as many of these activities as
you can and please give your name to any member of the
Parish Council if you are interested in volunteering your
services for any of our many programs and events. We would
greatly appreciate any assistance that you are able to provide.

St. Vartan Camp
By
Vanessa Ghazarian
St. Vartan Camp begins in late June and comes to an end
in mid August. Through the many camp songs sung by the
campfire, the early morning and late night chapel services, the
sports played throughout the day and the classes we attend, the
campers, CIT’s and Staff have been lucky enough to form
lasting friendships with other youths from all around the
United States, and strengthen our faith.
As the first week of Session B comes to a close, campers,
CIT’s, and Staff participated in the annual SVC Talent Show.
The event was a riot. Some of the acts included a reenactment
of the Jai Ho! Dance from the award winning movie Slumdog
Millionaire (starring one of our very own, Christina
Zaroogian), Armenian remixes of the songs Who Is That Man,
American Boy, and a routine for the Evolution of Dance.
Being sixteen I have acquired new responsibilities at
camp and have become a CIT, which is generally known as
standing for Counselor In Training, but as Der Krikor of Holy
Translators brought to our attention, it can also stand for
Camper In Transition. Having such a big task at camp is a big
responsibility - but is also very rewarding. I came to camp
expecting to give my campers my full attention, and watch
after them during the day - but not only did I keep them safe,
they also taught me a lot about faith and friendship.
I have met so many great people at camp and would not
give up experiences here for anything. Jennifer Morris who
works at the Diocese Youth Outreach Coordinator, but while
at camp acts as the CIT Coordinator/Camp administrator has
done an amazing job of putting together fun but spiritual
programs.

Getting ready with girls for the dance Friday night was a
blast. The campfire that was supposed to follow was cancelled
due to thunderstorms, but all was okay because the teens were
allowed to stay at the dance an extra 45 minutes. Saturday the
whole camp was split into red and blue teams to participate in
our annual Olympic Games. I am sad to say that my team, the
red team, is not in the lead thus far.
I am so thankful to be up in the mountains now with all
my friends experiencing God’s presence with me everyday. I
am still looking forward to making new friends and forming
new bonds within the next week. The Providence members at
Session B, including Christina Zaroogian, Juliet Demasi,
Michael, Emily, and Elise Papazian, CIT Nicole Nahabedian,
and myself, Vanessa Ghazarian, were pleasantly surprised
with a visit from Der Sahak earlier this week. The participants
in Session A were Mari & Garen Megrdichian, Eric & Mark
Harpootian. Sam De Blois and Alexandra DeMasi attended
Session C. I personally encourage all the youth at Sts. Sahag
and Mesrob Armenian Church in Providence to really consider
attending St. Vartan Camp whether it is for one or two weeks
of Session A, B, or C. We are all sending our best regards
from Greenville, New York.

the opportunity to learn and one student recited her personal
reflections at the program as well.
Hagop Ghajanian
On Sunday May 31, 2009 the Armenian School presented an
end of the year program and light lunch. As Ghazaros Aghaian
said, “It is not enough to be patriotic; one should also love his
mother tongue.” The 15 students exemplified that quote as
they happily sang Armenian songs and recited Armenian
poems. Several of the children performed short skits
entertaining the audience of parishioners, family and friends.
The Armenian School expects an increase in enrollment in the
fall. Pre-registration will be on Sunday September 13. Regular
registration will be held on the first day of school, Tuesday,
September 15, 2009. Hope to see you there!
Parish Council chairman John Kazarian as well as Father
Kaishian and School Superintendent, Hagop Ghajanian made
brief remarks and the four Armenian School teachers were
recognized. A light lunch sponsored by the school committee
was provided and the children were recognized and presented
with THE ARMENIANS’ HISTORY inscribed by the
Superintendent.
Armenian School was a wonderful experience for the kids and
they learned reading, writing, music, history and arts. They
were enthusiastic about their lessons as well as their group
sessions and discussions. The adult students also appreciated

ACYOA Juniors and Seniors Yard Sale
Article written by Sevan Janigian
During the summer of 2005, I, along with many other
ACYOA members shared the experience of a lifetime. We
were fortunate enough to travel to Armenia and witness, first
hand, our true culture. While there, we spent time helping
those in need at the Noubarashen orphanage located on the
outskirts of Yerevan. The Children there touched us in such a
way that inspired us to keep helping. Since that trip, the
ACYOA had continuously sent various necessities to them.
On June Thirteenth the ACYOA juniors and seniors held a
yard sale, in which all proceeds would be used to benefit the
orphanage. With the huge help from our parishioners, we
collected a great amount of items to sell, and made roughly
$1,600. On behalf of the ACYOA we would like to thank all
of those who lent a helping hand, your efforts will be
remembered by us, and them.
ACYOA Juniors Sports Weekend in Watertown
Article written by Haig Yaghoobian, Jr.
At the turn of the spring of 2009, the long anticipated event of
Hye M'rstoom was upon us once again. This sports weekend
was held in Watertown, MA at St. James Armenian Church.
Over the years there has been a reasonably large turnout of
Armenian youth and this year was no exception. Over 150
Armenians attended the weekend. There were representatives
from many parishes across not only New England, but even
parishes farther south like St. David's in Florida. Ages ranged
from 13-18. For many it was their first time at any Sports
Weekend, while for others it was their 3rd or 4th year or more.
Spring Sports Weekend usually has a variety of different
sports for the kids to be a part of and participate in and this
year was no exception. There were classic sports like
Basketball for boys, and girls as well as Co-Ed volleyball.
There was a widely favored 3-Point Contest as well as
intramural sports that anyone, regardless of their athletic
ability, could participate in and have fun.
Saints Sahag and Mesrob Church Newsletter
The evenings at Sports Weekend were the highlight of the
weekend. The Friday night was a night of excitement and
anticipation for all with the reuniting of old friends and the
meeting of new ones, as well as the housing decisions.
Saturday night was the first dance and was a good time for
everyone dancing to both Armenian music and popular music.
Sunday night was the best part of the weekend when
participants were treated to a boat ride on the Spirit of Boston.
The combination of music and food on a luxurious and
beautiful yacht was a big hit. Both decks were available with a
beautiful view of Boston under the stars.
Overall, the 2009 Hye M'rstoom was a great success and fun
for all kids of all ages – we hope some of you will join our
group and attend the next Sports Weekend being held this
October in Fair Lawn, NJ over Columbus Day weekend.
ACYOA Juniors organize kids activities during
the Annual Church Picnic
Article written by Christina Zaroogian
On Sunday June 14, 2009 the annual Saints Sahag and Mesrob
Church Picnic took place. As always it was a fun filled picnic
planned by the Parish Council. This year as usual, the
ACYOA Juniors had many fun activities set up for the kids.
The Juniors had a craft tent set up where the kids enjoyed bead
bracelet making, string bracelet making, temporary tattoos,
and tye dying! We also had a bouncy house for the kids to
enjoy and play in. All ACYOA members interacted with the
children and helped them with the activities. Working with all
the children was a lot of fun and brought everyone pleasure.
We’re looking forward to another successful and enjoyable
picnic next year!

The purpose of the class is to give the attendees a panoramic
view of the history of the Christian Church from its inception
through the 20th century, dealing with its origins, basic faith,
organization, worship, theology, customs, etc.
Special
emphasis is given to Orthodox Christianity, of which the
Armenian Church is a part, as well as to the development of
Armenian Christianity throughout the ages.
On Sunday July 26th, Sts Sahag and Mesrob Church was
fortunate to have Very Rev. Fr. Norayr Kazazian, a member of

At The Picnic!!
Presently, the lectures and discussions are focused on modern
Christianity (1600-2000) in the context of the new challenges
facing the Church; secularism, materialism, consumerism,
multiple religions and philosophies etc. Special emphasis is
given to the challenges facing the Armenian Church, both in
the homeland and the diaspora: secularism, ethnocentrism,
nationalism, lack of Christian understanding and spirituality,
absence of missionary outreach, etc.

Armenian Sports
The Armenian Saints Softball Team
The Armenian Saints softball team started in 2005 by Armen
Janigian is consists of a group of young Armenians from the
local Armenian Churches. Each Monday during the summer
the team plays in the Christian Softball Association. This
league, in existence for over 30 years, has been a RI mainstay
for local churches to compete in Christian love and fellowship.
To date, the Saints are 9-5 this season and are firmly locked in
for a playoff run. The team has one regular season game
remaining on Monday, August 3rd against New Beginnings
Church of Christ at Buttonwoods Masonic Field in Warwick
and then, will have a scrimmage on August 10th against South
Attleboro Assembly of God Church at Hank Soar Field
(Pawtucket) in preparation for the playoffs.
This team has slowly gotten better and is now equipped to
make a championship run. The Saints will enter the playoffs
the weekend of August 14, 15 and 17th to try and win its first
championship. The playoffs are held at Western Hills Junior
High School and Atwood Avenue Field - both in Cranston.
The camaraderie between the 2 Churches has been great and
our love and respect towards one another has grown from its
inception 4+ years ago. The team has dedicated the 2009
Summer and Fall season to our fallen brother in Christ, Gerry
Ayrassian, a longtime member of the Saints and our Churches'
team for many years. We retired his uniform (#6) and it hangs
proudly at every game. We will surely miss Gerry and we
know he will be with us at every game in our hearts and
minds.
We ask you to come out and support the Armenian Saints
Softball team this summer and for the upcoming playoffs. The
Saints will also be heading this fall to another league which
will likely start after Labor Day. More information will be
provided by the next newsletter. Thanks for your support.

what to eat, watching portions and exercising at least three
times per week. She has never forgotten that healthy eating
helps one to lose weight and keep it off as well as regain selfesteem.
Some of the advice that she gave to the attentive audience
was in regard to watching one’s portions – cutting them in
half. Similarly, Woloohojian discussed the importance of
making sure one’s daily menu contains the following food
groups: vegetables and fruit, dairy, lean protein, whole grains,
healthy oils such as olive and canola, and fluids, especially
water and, if needed, a multi-vitamin mineral supplement.
She demonstrated the mega portions offered today in most
restaurants by showing a bowl of pasta that she had ordered.
After eating about one cup, there remained over two cups in
the bowl. That is why moderation is a key element in eating
healthy and losing weight. She emphatically said, “You don’t
have to belong to the Clean Plate Club.”
Following the question-and-answer segment, Eranosian and
Cultural Committee director Konstantin Petrossian thanked
Woloohojian for taking time out of her busy schedule to offer
this important program. Cookbooks from Weight Watchers
were raffled as gifts to several lucky recipients. At the end of
the evening the audience was treated to low calorie
refreshments, including light cheese, whole grain crackers,
fruit, and Weight Watchers desserts.

Noah and Ararat
Immodestly, Armenians consider themselves direct descendants of
Noah, survivor of the Biblical flood. According to Genesis, ...the boat
came to rest on a mountain in the Ararat range. Ararat, located in the
heart of Armenia, was a Holy Mountain for the peoples of the ancient
world. Many ancient scriptures placed the Biblical Garden of Eden in
the Land of Armenia also called the Land of Ararat.

Tradition states that Noah founded Nakhichevan, the oldest of the
Armenian cities. Moses Khorenatsi , historian of the 5th century,
presents a detailed genealogy of the Armenian forefather Haik from
Japheth, Noah's son. Thus, the territory of the Armenian Plateau is
regarded as the cradle of civilization, the initial point for the further
spreading of mankind all around the world.
Haik
The oldest myths reflect the wars of ancient Armenians against the
neighboring Assyrians. Haik, considered the patriarch of the
Armenian people, led his army to defeat the Assyrian giant Baeleus.
By approximately 2100 BC, a prototype of the first Armenian state
was founded. Even now, Armenians call themselves Hai (pronounced
high), and their country - Haik or Haiastan, in honor of Haik. The
Hittite scripts also mention a Haiasa country. Meanwhile, the
Assyrian cuneiform writings designate Armenia as Urartu (Arartu),
which means Ararat. The Old Testament also associates Armenia
with the Mount Ararat (the Kingdom of Ararat). In ancient times,
Armenia was equally associated with the rivers Tigris, Euphrates,
Araks and Kura. That is why the neighboring Assyrians also called
Armenia, Nairi, standing for Riverland, Country of Rivers.
Haik, once thought to be just a hero of an epic legend, is presently
accepted by some researches as an actual chieftain of Armens in the
3rd millennium BC. Historians proved that later Haik was deified and
proclaimed the prime god in the pantheon of gods in the pagan
Armenia. One of Haik's most famous scions, Aram, considerably
extended the borders of his country, transforming it into a powerful
state. Since then, Greeks and Persian began to call the country
Armenia, i.e. the country of Aram.
Ara the Beautiful
Aram's son, Ara the Beautiful succeeded him. A very romantic
Armenian legend tells that Ara was so handsome that the Assyrian
Queen Semiramis (the same who founded Babylon and planted its
marvelous hanging gardens) fell in love with him. Ara repeatedly
rejected her love proposals until the desperate queen began war with
him. The Assyrians troops won the furious battle, and Ara was killed,
in despite of Semiramis's order to preserve his life. Inconsolable
Semiramis reputed to be sorceress took his body and tried in vain to
enliven him. When Armenians advanced to avenge their leader, she
disguised one of her lovers and spread the rumor that Gods brought
Ara back to life. As a result, the war was ceased.
Van and Yerevan
History attributes the building of Van, one of the most ancient
Armenian cities at the shore of the salt lake of the same name, to the
legendary Semiramis. Another ancient Armenian city is Yerevan,
capital of today's Republic of Armenia. Its foundation dates from 782
BC, which is reported in a cuneiform writing of King Argiste.
