Gwyn says, “I already have a love of books, and people I
admired were starting a "Friends" of the library group in
Darlington. What a felicitous congruence. I joined
immediately. My favorite part is putting the new de-accessed
books in their categories, finding books for customers. My
least favorite part is deshelving books to box and send to an
online bookseller. But I am very proud of the donations we
have made to libraries in Siberia, South America, and also to
local prisons. Also, I’m still working with people I admire.”
Helen says, “For me, it has been a great way to meet new
people while giving back to the community. I like that we
support the summer reading program and just recently a
prototype community garden. My favorite part is helping
people find books on sale day. It is very helpful to have the
books categorized. I have to say I have never been to a book
sale quite like ours.”
Ginnie says, “I am not always able to participate, but I really
enjoy meeting other people from the community and feeling
that I am doing something interesting and worthwhile.
The group is very regular about when it meets and it doesn't
take a great deal of time. I love books and the encounter with
so many books I never would think to find or look for is fun.
(Plus being able to take them home and do a thorough
perusal to see if I want them on my shelves is a real benefit.)”

Library: NOTICE OF COMMUNITY
MEETING
Community meetings are planned to seek ideas and
input from the public as part of feasibility studies to
determine the need for the renovation or construction
of new Aberdeen and Darlington branches of the
Harford County Public Library. Led by the project
consultants, Morris & Ritchie Associates, Inc., the
Aberdeen meeting will take place at the Aberdeen
Library at 21 Franklin Street on Monday, August 11 at
6:30 pm and the Darlington meeting will take place at
the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company at 2600
Castleton Road on Tuesday, August 12 at 6:30 pm.
Jane says, “This is a great volunteer job because the work
itself does not take a lot of time and each job has a beginning
and end. One of the best parts is working side by side with
likeminded people who appreciate what our little library has
to offer our rural community.”
Can you see that this is a pretty sweet way to volunteer,
meet new people and give back to the historic village of
Darlington? The Friends of the Darlington Library need
new volunteers to help with all the jobs that lead up to
our monthly book sales. We are the smallest library in
Harford County, yet we are mighty. We are the only
library to offer a monthly book sale (10 months out of
the year). If you would like to help, please leave your

Do you have a love for our Darlington library? Do you take

offered there? At a recent work session, shelving books for
the next used book sale in September, a number of us
chatted about why we enjoy this particular volunteer job.

MORE GOOD FOOD IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD!
The Darlington Lions Club and the congregation of the Darlington United Methodist Church are once
again joining forces to prepare a chicken BBQ meal. The event will take place on Saturday, August
23 at the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company social hall from 3-7 pm. The dinner will go on rain or
shine. In addition to a half of a chicken, there will be homemade potato salad and cole slaw, green
beans, rolls, coffee, iced tea, and desert. The cost is $12 for adults and children's portions for
$6. You can dine on-site or carry out meals are also available. For additional information call

Getting There Ride Share and the Wilson Ministry Center invite our Seniors to a
SUMMERTIME MOVIE MATINEE

“The Quartet” is a British comedy-drama based on the play of the same name
by Ronald Harwood. The 2012 film, directed by Dustin Hoffman, stars Maggie
Smith, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connoly, Pauline Collins and Michael Gambon as
residents of a retirement community for musicians. The retirement home is
struggling financially, so the residents decide to fundraise by putting on a
musical gala. The cornerstone of the gala is to be a performance of the
quartet from the opera Rigoletto… if the members of the quartet don’t do
one another in first!

Dublin Darlington Community Council September meeting to feature the County Auditor
The County Auditor for Harford County is reaching out to the Community Councils to inform groups about the
role of the County Auditor’s office. A short presentation, about the whys, whos, whats and hows of auditing,
will be followed by input from attendees about the County’s risks and challenges. The meeting will be held at
the Conowingo Visitor Center on Wednesday, September 17, at 7:00pm.
Darlington Volunteer Fire Company Plans Yard Sale
The yard sale is set for Saturday, September 27th from 0900 to 1500 (That’s 9am to 3pm for most of us!) More
inside space will be made available for those that would like guaranteed cover. Breakfast and lunch will be

It’s that time again and as a resident of Darlington I want to make you aware that this year’s festival
will be held Saturday, October 4, from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. I also invite you to join the committee at our
monthly meetings, which are held on the second Tuesday of every month, except August, November
and December, two meetings in September, the 9th and the 23th in the Wilson Community Center at
7 P.M.
Road closures will affect residents in town significantly. In an effort to keep traffic flowing as smoothly
as possible on the morning of the festival, we direct traffic on Shuresville Road going towards Quaker
Road and on School Road going towards Rte 161. At 8 A.M. we close Shuresville Road and redirect the
traffic on School Road to run towards Quaker Road. At the close of the festival, vendors are allowed to
bring vehicles back onto the festival grounds at 5:30 P.M. when we direct traffic on Shuresville Road to
run towards Rte. 161.
We have made some changes in that we have a new website, a work in progress and a Facebook site,
go online and check us out!
We will be collecting nonperishables again for the Wilson Center Food Drive. Shopping carts will be
placed at the parking lots and on the festival grounds for nonperishable food items as well as much
needed toiletries. Last year we collected 3 small bed pick-up truck loads of nonperishables that were
taken to the food drive which is distributed once a month.
Thank you, in advance, to those involved for the use of your property and for your patience on this
very important day for the community. I hope you are aware of the ways in which our community
benefits from this one day festival. I have been told that many of our local organizations could not
function without the funds that they raise this day in October. These organizations are the glue that
makes this small town a community and without them we wouldn't be much of a community at all.

WHAT'S IN YOUR ATTIC - SEPTEMBER 6TH
The Historical Society of Harford County is presenting an antiques and collectibles appraisal event on
Saturday, September 6, 2014 from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the Bel Air Armory located at 37 N. Main
Street in Bel Air. More than 20 professional appraisers will be present. The cost is $10.00 per item

Black Dogs & Company Rescue is always looking for volunteers and foster families. All our dogs are
temperament tested and are up to date on all vaccines, wormed, micro chipped and on heart worm and flea

We do need donations of all kinds including new collars and leashes, dog beds, sturdy dog toys; donations of
Frontline and Heart Guard. And of course money!! A check can be made out to Black Dogs & Company
Rescue and mailed to our PO Box 8, Darlington MD 21034. You can also go to our Facebook page or
webpage and donate via Pay Pal, which takes a portion of the money for handling this Also while you are on
the web, fill out an application to volunteer.
We always need help at events. We need people to help set up break down, handle dogs. We have a nice
group of trainers from BluelineK-9 who come to one of the volunteer homes and fosters bring their dogs and
we work on training. We can always use help and of course the knowledge they get goes with them for free!!!!
We are in the process of getting our nonprofit status and 501c3. We are working with an attorney at this time.
We could use some PR help with putting our info on bulletin boards in Vet offices and feed stores. There are
many opportunities to help us help the dogs.

NEWS RELEASE FROM DELMARVA POWER
Delmarva has launched a new streetlight reporting system, a self-service, online map tool that
enables customers to report a streetlight outage or problem to Delmarva Power through its website.
To report a streetlight outage, customers can visit www.delmarva.com. Click “my home” then “report
an outage or safety hazard,” then “report streetlight outage.” Customers will need to provide their
names and contact information, as well as either an address or the utility pole number for the affected
light. Customers can also report a streetlight issue by calling the Delmarva Power Customer Care
Center at 1-800-375-7117.
