This week...
Welcome to everyone today, for the
“official” round 1 games of the 2016
season. Whilst we had a few games
played over the Easter break, there are
still plenty of clubs that have not taken
the field or the court for premiership
points in 2016.
An what a way to kick of the season.
Massive crowds right across the 6 Good Friday and
Easter Saturday games, with big bags of goals being
kicked in both Nepean and Peninsula competitions.
Congratulations to Somerville’s Thomas Shaw for booting
an Easter high of 9 goals.
This is the making of the last 6 months where both football
and netball players have been putting in the hard work to
make sure they can get their 2016 season campaign off
to a flying start, and you never know what can happen
from there. Along with the players it is a busy time for all
club admin people and big pat on the back must go out
to all of those volunteers and committee members. These
people have put in the relentless hours over the summer
break to make sure the players are registered, apparel
is ordered, social calendars are organised, so make sure
that you go and thank them for their work as if it wasn’t
for them we wouldn’t have any clubs.
It has been a busy off season here in the office, along with
some new faces. We welcome Shaun Connell from South
East Juniors to the Leagues Managers role – where Shaun
will be tasked with overseeing both Senior and Junior
football across the MPNFL & FDJFL.
Interleague preparations are already underway for
this year. If you haven’t heard the PFNL and NFNL will
be returning to playing rep football and netball as the
MPNFL. We will be playing the Northern Football League
at Rye and a second team will be headed to Healesville
to take on the Yarra Valley Mountain District FNL. John
Hynes, John Sloan will head up the senior football sides
with Steve Brattle and Mark Hustwaite taking on the
Under 19 reins. For Netball Ben Black & Lisa Vines will
be in charge of the open sides. More information will be
release in coming week about squads and game details.
We hope that everyone enjoys there first week back
playing for premiership points and best of luck to all sides
competing this season, if Easter is any indication we are
going to see a terrific 2016 season, hopefully this will be
your year!

WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country
2016 Season Welcome
As the weather begins to get cooler and fresh 50m lines
are painted on the field, excitement is brewing across
Victoria for the return of local football.
Whether you are playing, umpiring, volunteering or supporting from the sidelines, this time of year brings with
it a feeling of optimism and anticipation for what lies
ahead for season 2016.
Over the summer months football competitions rights
across the State have been busily preparing for the
introduction of the Player Points System, which is an
integral part of AFL Victoria’s Community Club Sustainability Program.
The work carried out by Region Commissions, in conjunction with leagues and clubs, has been a terrific endorsement of the policy which aims to reduce volunteer
workloads and with time, escalating player payments in
community football.
In addition to the Player Points System, a Salary Cap continues to be developed and is anticipated to be released
mid-year to allow leagues sufficient time to educate and
implement the policy in readiness for 2017.
Season 2016 will also see our 12 Regional Commissions
continue to drive football forward in every corner of the
State.
These bodies are committed to strengthening relationships with community leagues and clubs as well as manage the strategic long term planning for the development of football in their respective regions.
The Football Development Network of ten Regional
General Managers and 27 regionally-based staff
members continue to ensure that WorkSafe AFL Victoria
Country has never been better placed to support clubs
and assist them in addressing the challenges unique to
their local area.
Through their leadership and collaboration, the work
conducted by our regions with regard to the develop-
ment of the game, participation, facilities and competition management sets country football in good stead
for the future.
In addition to what has been a busy off-season, I would
like to take this opportunity to reflect on the work of the
Victorian Country Football League, which was officially
cancelled at the annual general meeting this month
after the successful integration with AFL Victoria in 2012.
Founded in 1927, the VCFL’s achievements include the
introduction of the Country Championships, the longterm relationship with WorkSafe Victoria as its official
Naming Rights, the Country Football Netball Program
and the introduction of the Area Managers Program.
The final chapter of the VCFL’s integration into AFL
Victoria was completed with the induction of three new
Life Members- Gerard Lucas, Brett Fitzpatrick and Steven
Reaper.
All three men have dedicated more than 10-years of
exceptional service to country football, which is a fitting
end to the work both they and the VCFL have made to
grassroots football in Victoria.
Lastly, I would like to wish all players, coaches, umpires,
volunteers and administrators the best of luck for the
season ahead and I hope it is a successful one for all
involved.

Let the season begin

Finally, the 2016 season has officially arrived. Welcome
back!
We may have played a handful of games over Easter but
we all know the real season begins today.
Strangely enough, as the season gets into full swing, there
are already a couple of teams under a bit of pressure.
One of them is Rye. The Demons were nothing short of
ordinary in their Good Friday clash with Rosebud, a match
played out in a draw.
Today, Rye tackles the side many believe will go one better
in season 2016, Somerville in the RPP Match of the Round.
The Eagles were potent against Tyabb on Easter Saturday
with Tommy Shaw booting nine and Luke Rowe seven,
while a further nine players hit the scoreboard.
Rye’s defensive pressure hasn’t been good for a number of
years and one questions whether they can hold the Eagles.
The Rye midfield doesn’t work hard enough to push back
and defend and its defenders are undersized.
Somerville’s concern is its inability to stop teams from
scoring. It will more often win in a shootout but it can’t
afford to give sides such as Tyabb an opportunity to kick
72 points.
If the Eagles have learned anything from last season in a
bid to go one better, it must be to restrict opposition from
scoring and shutting them down.
In a 16-round season, it’s hard to come back from 0-2. This
will be something Rye will need to face tonight.
The other side under pressure is last year’s premier,
Rosebud.
The Buds too were ordinary against Rye at Easter and must
improve a lot to knock over Dromana this weekend.
When you lose three players from your front six (Tom
Baker, Lachy Armstrong and Cade Williams) and three of
your best from the middle (Jason Bristow, Paul McDonald
and Rob Forrest), things are going to be tough.
They tackle a Dromana side that has rediscovered its
hunger, passion and spirit – all words that best describe
new coach Rikki Johnston.
Beau Cosson is a revelation, Williams comes up against his
old side, Adam Hunter got going in the second half last
week (although he should be playing off half back) and
will improve as time moves on and the Tigers are full of
spirit after beating Sorrento.
Like Rye, Rosebud will be 0-2 after two matches.
Crib Point and Red Hill will be a fascinating game.
The Magpies have done well in the off-season, picking
up some quality in the likes of Taylor Stratton as coach,
Kain Stratton, Paul Dadds and Mitch Stansborough from
Mornington and Matt Hogan from YCW.
At Red Hill, the talk has been more about the losses and
less about the ins. The Red Hill Football Club has lost
22 players from its 2015 list, nine of them starting 18
players, who include Paul Wintle, Jake and Josh Mold, Ben
Macguiness, Matt Vagg and Jarred Eames.
The Hillmen have picked up some good players though,
especially the Marchetti brothers from Cora-Lynn, as well
as Jackson Dalton, who has been kicking bags in practice
matches.

Former Frankston YCW premiership player Benny Poole is
also a sensational get while Nick Walsh is hard as a cat’s
head in defence.
As noted already, there’s no time to get going in a 16-round
competition. Teams need to hit the ground running. The
winner of this match may still not play finals. The loser
definitely won’t.
Devon Meadows was the flyer late last season and it has
recruited very well in the off-season.
Former Frankston YCW leader and Team of the Year MVP
Stevey Roberts is without question the pick of all recruits
across the competition. Despite coming off knee injuries,
he is unquestionably a star.
Justin Volk from Tyabb is a good get too, as is Andrew Kiely
and ruckman Jesse Bowe. Callum O’Hare is a great get
(back from a knee) and Curtis Barker is a wonderful talent.
The Panthers need to be mindful of being too top heavy in
attack with Kiely, Dylan Hand and Glenn Michie. Kiely is a
sensational defender and should be parked at centre half
back or full back. Those who have seen Devon in practice
matches believe there is not enough defensive pressure.
Pearcedale was disappointing against Frankston Bombers
on Good Friday. Some may say they were overawed by the
occasion with 12 players under the age of 22.
There were a couple of stand-out performances from
Joel White across half back and Dylan Hoare through the
middle. The Dales were missing a few also, most notably
Pat Heijden, which Michael Williams as the only key target.
Travis Bravo needs to be left inside the attacking 50m arc
to be of most value at his new club.
Devon Meadows are a big show for the five this season
and will start its journey positively today.

Sorrento simply must bounce back at home against
Hastings.
The Sorras were pretty good in spurts against Dromana
but it wasn’t enough to get them over the line.
Put simply, the Sorrento team needs to start operating as a
team and less as a group of talented individuals.
Previous coach Troy Schwarze would simply put his 22 on
the field and allow them to beat their opponent and win
the game. It worked more often than not.
New coach Nick Jewell will provide structure, discipline
and a team ethos – the sooner all Sorrento players
embrace this and charge forward, the sooner it will get its
season back on track.
New recruit Nick Corr is an absolute gem. The key is to play
Corr high and Scott Lockwood deep – they will be lethal.
Hastings has picked up Mark Devereaux (returned) and
Nathan Gray, who comes with massive wraps from the EFL.
Luke Smith from Seaford is also an outstanding get, while
coach Brendan Dunne is fit and firing from all reports.
Tyabb booted 11 goals against Somerville in a consistent
performance over four quarters.
The Yabbies start from a long way back.
Frankston Bombers are widely tipped to be playing finals,
given its favourable draw and strong recruiting in the offseason.
Dale Sutton is without question the pick of the recruits,
while Jarryd Amalfi gives them the run, carry and long kick
from half back. It frees Beau Muston to play through the
middle or pinch-hit in attack.
Ryan Kitchen proved his worth taking strong contested
marks and Nathan Lonie is a star who provides composure,
experience and a sure kick. Josh Chapman looks set to
have a really good season also.

Crib Point Magpies
The summer has flown by and a new season is upon us
already!! Could’ve sworn Silly Sunday was only 3 weeks
ago! The club has undergone plenty of changes in the
offseason with a new president, new coach and plenty
of new faces which bring with it plenty of enthusiasm
and excitement for the year. Stratts has the boys in good
order as we host the Hillmen on a big reunion day for the
football club.
Welcome to all past players as they come along to watch
on at the current generation, lament the state of the
game and regale in stories of an era when men were steel
and ships were timber (the recently retired 2015 batch
cannot partake for another decade). There is a certain
former under 18 b&f winner from the 60s who will be on
hand all day to teach anyone willing learn on how to kick
a torp. Any new players to the club make sure you get
that lesson in, it’s a rite of passage if you want to be a Crib
Point footballer.
As always when you spend an extended time away from a
place, life changes and players who were once young and
wild have now developed into well rounded upstanding
citizens doing their bit for the nation. Congratulations
to Andrew Dowey and Minna on the birth of little Edie,
Shayne Ainsworth and Jess with little River, Luke and
Laura Herrington on little Ollie, Glenn and Fiona on little
India, and James and Natalie Wisken on their third little
girl name TBC. Sorry coaches but what used to be the
selection room is now a play area. Good luck to all taking
to the field today and for the upcoming season.
Go Pies!!
Rosebud Buds
Today we welcome everyone back to Olympic Park, the
true home of southern peninsula football! Especially to our
past players, we expect the stories to be taller again this
year, enjoy your day. To our eastern arch rivals Dromana,
welcome too. The silver lining to the draw is we have 2
more points than last year, we are in the “4” & sit above Rye
(thanks to the alphabet)! Well done to Boz, Jack, Jackson,
Mat, Tom and Seb your efforts against Rye nearly got us
across the line. The Development squad perhaps got a
little ahead of themselves, but there is still lots to look
forward to here – Peggy (A), Mewy, big Trav, Benny G, and
Hotch, among others are putting their hand up for senior
selection. A number of U19s had real break out games as
players and leaders - Fletch, Adam, Jacob, Ty, Isack and
Tanner were all very good, and will no doubt feature at
higher levels in the near future. Today will be a challenge
for all our teams against the reinvigorated Dromana, but
that’s when we are at our best. Easter weekend was huge
for the Club, bumper crowd on Good Friday and half the
peninsula at the Easter Monday Family Fun Day. The steely
coaching of Al Stephens and his new look women’s team
a feature. Well done to the Committee and all the helpers
- a massive accomplishment. Tonight celebrate at the Full
Moon Party – check the app for more details.

Easter Round – Fev Footy. What a great star to the 2016
Season.
Our round began on Thursday, Bombshells against
Panthers. We came away with one of everything, a win,
loss and a draw. Well done to the boys who found the time
to support the girls.
Friday was the big day – Fev, Dermie, BBQ, Beer and
Sunshine. A huge croud was expected and we weren’t
disappointed with 4000+ attending.
I would like to thank everyone who helped make the day
a success. Our Committee, Pearcedale FNC, Dolphins, The
Bombardiers, Gay, Darren Porra, UFirst realestate, Oporto,
The BOMBSHELLS, those that manned the food and beer
tents.
The Unders started the day off with a bang, kicking 8 goals
to 1 in a 50 point win. Muzz and Fuzz were great in their
first game of the season.
The Reserves had to do it tough all day before eventually
breaking free of a spirited Pearcedale and recording a 22
point victory. Dutchy was great up forward with 4 goals,
while Big O worked tirelessly in the ruck all day.
The main event of the day couldn’t have gone any better
#CelebBrendan booted 6 despite picking up an injury early
in the first quarter. Dale Sutton was sensational through
the middle as he racked up disposals as was Rowdy who
Pearcedale just couldn’t keep quiet. The Seniors finished
with an 11 goal win. Special shout out must go to Bombers
prodigal son Dermott Brereton who stepped up and took
on the running duties of the day.
Good luck today at Tyabb lets nip those Yabbies and come
home with six wins.

Devon Meadows Panthers
Can you smell that? The sweet aroma of opportunity and
hope which is ever-present at the opening round of the
season…. There is also the smell of stale beer, bourbon
and barbecue shapes from cricket season but that should
wash away pretty soon hopefully. How great it is to be
back at the footy though – Round 1 here at home and
always a ripping atmosphere when Pearcedale make
the journey up from the big smoke. A big game for our
Reserves as for the first time ever we play a match as
“Reigning Premiers”. Only feels like yesterday the flag was
won, but now the hard work begins as everyone wants
to take the scalp of the Champs. Always a tough battle
for the Larnach Cup in the Seniors, and nothing short of
our best will get the job done today. Pearcedale already
having played a match for points this year, those opening
round nerves will be gone and we’ll have to be switched
on from the first bounce. Last year going 8-8 for the
season was a great effort, but the pre-season theme has
been “Time to Step Up” and with a few players coming
back from injury and a couple of well selected recruits,
the time is now to make a move towards that elusive
finals series. Can’t wait to see how the 3rds go this year
also under new coaches Smacky and Push-up. Good Luck
to the lads, we’ll all be watching on with interest. Stick
around for a beer or 3 tonight, Flanno’s Bar will be rocking
on as per usual with awards, music and plenty of good
vibes… See ya there!
Sorrento Sharks
The Sharks came away with mixed results after the opening
clash against Dromana. The Under 19s had a thumping
win by just under 30 goals and the Reserves held off the
fast-finishing Dromana boys by 16 points. However, the
Seniors were overcome in the second half as Dromana ran
away with a 25 point win.
This week we’re back at Shark Park for the first time this
year against Hastings who are yet to get their campaign
started in 2016. The Sharks pride themselves on making
it very difficult for away sides to win at Shark Park and we
will be hoping that works in our favour this week.
Last week there were a number of experienced
campaigners playing in the Reserves who will be very keen
to get back into the top side. Having strong competition
for a spot in the Seniors is always a good thing for the club,
but it can make the selection process quite hard for Nick
and his team. Whatever the team looks like on paper, we all
know that the most important factor will be making sure
that everyone turns up ready to play their role and work as
a team. Let’s make sure we get this year’s campaign back
on track with three wins at home!
Go Sharks!
Red Hill Hillmen
In 1934 the League and District Clubs amalgamated to
form the Mornington Peninsula Football League. Two
club who made up B Grade were Red Hill + Crib Point.
On may 26th the two clubs met for the first time at Red
Hill with Red Hill 15-15 defeating Crib Point 11-15. But on
the 14th July the tables were turned with Crib Point 16-13
defeating Red Hill 9-6.
And so commenced a rivalry which continues 82 years
later with this opening round clash for the Healy-Emond
Shield and bragging rights attached. We congratulate the
50 year reunion player for the Magpies and the threepeat
for the club.
Up on The Hill we welcome a number of new players to
our club, and wish the players who have left good luck in
their ventures. Some, we hope to lure out of “retirement”
to be part of the next stage in our journey. We thank
Danny Mongan for his untiring efforts in the Pre-Season
and Kris McCarthy for his hard work in getting a match
day ready.
The practise matches with Pines, Wonthaggi and Chelsea
Heights were great hit outs. To Blackers, Leigh, Beardy
and Gil, we wish you well in your coaching roles and may
you be rewarded with successful seasons.
Footy is back! Get on board for 2016.

Sponsors for our round one clash against 2015 Premiers
Rosebud, who always proves a challenge at their home
ground, are Bendigo Bank and Hillview Quarries.
The club would like to thank all our helpers for their big
effort on Easter Saturday with particular mention to
the BBQ ladies and Junior club members who worked
tirelessly throughout the day
The Easter round started well with our netballers playing
on the Thursday night and winning all four games,
however, the Saturday football didn’t start well with both
the U19s and Reserves losing to Sorrento.
The Senior game started with Sorrento looking
dangerous up front but Dromana kept up and it proved
a close contest for 3 quarters with Dromana up by 10
points at the last break.
Sorrento came back hard early in the last but Dromana
steadied and 4 goals from 2015 League U19 B & F Reece
Wilde slammed the door and Dromana ran out 25 point
winners.
It was a great start to 2016 with our new recruits and
debutants blending well with the existing players to
produce a great team win.
See Col Matthews for a ticket in our early raffle also
next rounds game against Rye will be Past Players Day.

Round 1 has finally arrived and we are playing our old foe
Sorrento FNC in what will be a huge test for the boys. After
having put in a terrific Pre Season under the guidance of
Jamie Barnes (our Fitness Guru), the boys are in fantastic
nick for today’s games. We come here today with the
knowledge that this is a massive test for all three sides.
Our Under 19s get things underway under the watchful
eye of Laurie Howard who has done a marvellous job with
his group of players. We wish them luck for today’s game
and the season ahead. Our Reserves side will be coached
for the first time by Simon Clancy and we wish him and
the boys all the best for the season ahead. To our senior
side we wish you boys all the best of luck today under the
guidance of our Senior Coach Brendan Dunne who has
done a terrific job with getting the boys ready for today’s
game. Good luck to all our new players who are pulling

Who said 2 points are better than none, well maybe,
however 4 points would have been a lot more enjoyable.
We still retain the Appleford / Luck Cup for another year,
so that’s a positive and what about Greigy’s screamer and
goal in the last Qrt, more of that today Matt. The seniors
jumped out of the blocks, but just couldn’t get a run on
and kick back to back goals all day, credit to Rosebud
who kept coming back. Great to see the 2 under 17 boys
in Jacko and Joel Wills, playing good games along with
Richo up from the U/19’s. Ryan Taylor did a superb job
down back, keeping the Rosebud full forward goalless,
while Kirka’s, Milly and Ryan Mullett all dominated. Big
game today boys against Somerville, let’s have the 4
points at 5.00pm. Great debut as Coach for Michael
Pudney in the reserves, with a win. Matt Whelan was
sensational with 4 goals, along with Matt Wylie, the
Dunn boys, Cam and Andrew with Trav Doolan last years
under 19 B&F winner playing well. The U/19s had a tough
day against last year’s runners up, with 5 under 17 boys
helping out. Chaigen Watson with 2 goals had a great
game, with Mitch Dunn. Our first major function next
week after our home game against Devon Meadows.
The annual player auction night for the footballers and
netball players. 7.00pm start. Come down and bid for
your favourite player and cash up during the year, when
that player gets a best on ground. Meals and Drinks on
the night.

Seniors : Leading into the Easter game against Somerville
our expectations were high. Our first half of the quarter
effort with us matching goal for goal with Somerville
showed some improvement on last year. In the second
quarter Somerville kicked away from us. Their bigger
bodies and general play all over the ground found us
wanting. Despite the big difference in scores we felt the
side played better in the second half with some great
passages of play proving that the game plans and set ups
will work for us. As last years grand finalists Somerville
were the better side on the day.
Development Squad: With quite a few new players in the
side we took a while to settle down and play cohesively.
We tackled hard but a few fumbles at key moments in
the play proved costly. Once this side is used to playing
together we expect they will put some wins together
Under 19s: Against a strong Somerville side our boys
put up a good showing with a lot of promise in most
positions all over the field. Unfortunately Somerville were
far too strong on the day but we believe that the side has
the capabilities to win more games this season.
Somerville Eagles
Welcome everyone back to the nest today where we face
Rye. On Easter Saturday, the club recorded three great
wins over our arch rivals Tyabb. It was great to see both
Tom Shaw and Luke Rowe get amongst the goals as well
as Jarred Ewers in the seconds. Unfortunately, the U19s
game was a forfeit so the boys will start their season today.
A warm welcome to all the new U19 players as well as
the senior players. Today we have our Villeins lunch so
welcome back to the club to all of those supporters.

A New Year Brings A New Look...
And we’re off and running. The 2016 season started with
a bang at Easter and after a week to recuperate we head
full bore into the unknowns of a new and exciting season.
Some seasons come and go and feel the same as the last
but at the SUA, 2016 promises to be different. The new
season brings with it immense change…some might
even refer to it as refreshment. New uniforms…New
senior coaching staff…A new crop of aspiring senior
umpires. That’s a lot of change for one short preseason. It
would be disrespectful to the legacy of those departed to
call this a regeneration of the SUA but this definitely provides an opportunity for the fresh guard to stamp their
imprint on such a strong association that continues to
lead from the front throughout Country Victoria.
Many of you may not have recognised us last week or
maybe prayed that it really wasn’t us when we walked
out, ball aloft in GREEN. Then after the first free kick and
a few curse words a saddened look appeared upon your
faces as the realisation that it was the same free kick
you couldn’t bear to see last year. But nonetheless…we
look alright in this new strip. Just light enough that we
don’t have to worry about a clash strip on well grassed
decks and just dark enough to hide the effects our summer related activities. The AFL envisaged a one-for-all
and all-for-one umpiring model from the top right down
through grass roots. Part of this included a predominantly uniform strip that is now identifiable to all. And while
still maintaining a few differing quirks to the uniform
(umpires are a weird bunch with all their little quirks) the
SUA has jumped right on board.
But just because we wear green doesn’t mean we’re now
a very green group. Yes, we lost a lot of experienced and
widely respected heads following 2015 but we’ve ably replaced them. We wish all the best to Peter Marshall who
has departed us after many years as our fearless leader
for a new challenge at the Southern Football League. The
Foss helped put umpiring on the map in the region and
will always be welcomed back with open arms. But out
goes one old timer and in comes another. With a scone
26
that’s buffed and shined to create more glare than that of
a hot noon day sun, Mark Mounsey leaps into the role of
Director of Umpiring and Field Umpire’s Coach for 2016.
With his enthusiastic leadership, we are sure to bound
our way forward.
Some things change, but some things will always stay
the same. The SUA’s passion for the Mornington Peninsula and Casey regions will also endure. And that’s what
excites us all the most.
Get Involved
SUA are always on the lookout for those crazy individuals who want to become umpires. It takes a certain type
of person to want to umpire, but those people who take
the brave step, often benefit greatly from all umpiring offers. If you love the game and you want to keep fit, learn
life skills, meet new friends and earn some money then
umpiring is for you.

Netball Preview
It’s finally here…round one can you
believe it! Whilst we may have had a
tasty treat over the Easter break (and
no I’m not talking chocolate) with some
games unofficially starting. We are now
at the beginning of 16 rounds to a fresh
season. That right, anything can happen on the court so
best we have look into the crystal ball of this weeks games.
their line-up but last year if someone went down, there was
always another to stand up and do the job. They may not
be as far in front of the pack this year, but still a powerhouse
side. The Bombshells went down in a nail-biting game by
1 point to Pearcedale. Hopefully this is the season we see
Frankston explode, and cause many upsets. Tyabb to get
the job done.
Rosebud v Dromana
Sorrento and Hastings both find themselves in a similar
boat. Both sides are up and coming, and whilst they may
not have star studded line ups, everyone will sure be eager
to see their improvement during the season. This game
could certainly could go either way. For this week the
Sharks will get the nod.
Both of these teams had game over Easter, and came
home with the chocolates! Rosebud knocked off last year’s
runners up Rye, while Dromana made easy work of an up
and coming Sorrento side. This game should be a great
spectacle to any passionate netball lover, and a hard game
to call, but will side with the Buds as they have the home
court advantage.
Somerville v Rye
Somerville missed out last year on finals by percentage
while Rye were runners up. Once again both sides played
over Easter with not much success. A new look Rye, will be
back to a development stage and will certainly be looking
to get court time into their young stars. The Demons will
still cause some upset but won’t be as strong. Somerville
only just went down to Tyabb last weekend. The Eagles
certainly have improved over the summer and they will be
making sure they see finals action this year. Somerville for
the win this week.
Sorrento v Hastings
Crib Point v Red Hill
A Sunday special for all of the netball lover out there. This
game probably deserves its own day as it will be on for
young and old. The Magpies knocked out the ladies from
the Hill in the Semi Finals last year, so they will certainly
be looking to even the score. Red Hill were certainly the
surprise packet in 2015 but certainly will now be closely
watched by their opponents. Cribby certainly were not far
off a Grand Final, and the girls will be looking to set the
record straight this season with no doubt a pass mark
being making the last dance of the year. Massive game to
kick-start the season, Crib Point to win at home.
Devon Meadows v Pearcedale
Another rivalry game…talk about a smorgasbord of
netball! The battle of the Panthers. Devon Meadows
were strong early in the year only to fall away later in the
season. If the red, white and black panthers want to be at
the business end of the season, the hard work starts now.
Pearcedale from all reports have had a strong preseason, so
people beware as the Pink Panthers may just be on the rise.
With saying that they get this week’s tip.
Tyabb v Frankston Bombshells
Last year’s premiers kick-started their 2016 campaign with
a win over Somerville. The Yabbies have a few changes to

Frankston Bombshells
Math is clearly not NFNL favourite subject with our round
4 clash already over and done with well before even the
thought of round 1. With a mix bag of results, thanks to
Pearcedale who supplied us with the liquorice allsorts and
a healthy start to season 2016. A draw, win and a loss is
like cosmopolitan ice-cream–We’ll eat it but we really only
like chocolate.
C grade clash was a playground from start to finish: a
see-sawing beginning, a swinging middle and a merrygo-round tie to finish, exciting at the time but sort
of makes you feel a bit sick when it’s all over. Brilliant
defensive effort from Teegs and Zen creating countless
opportunities which Hayles and Kels happily converted!
B grade: it may not have been the most consistent
however everyone was backing each other up like an RnB
song playing at the Deck to help cement our win. Well
done to the new Mrs Blair Anderson picking up intercepts
from all over the court. Also to speedy Gonzalez Polly, if
this was supercoach you’d want to captain her to benefit
from those double points!
A grade were tremendously brave but unlucky to lose
by a goal. Fighting their way back into it, Cath was on
fire in goals and our midfield started to find room to run.
Unfortunately injury decimated our backline which fell
apart faster than an uncle toby’s musli bar that’s been
sitting in the cupboard too long, with both Bods and Cell
going down within the last minute.. Excited to play Tyabb
and officially round 1 this week, go Bomber!
Pearcedale Panthers
As we anticipated, Pearcedale’s 2016 Netball Season
has kicked off with as much excitement and ferocity as
we would expect from our squad of girls with a thirst
to prove that they can compete this season. All three
Easter Round games against the Frankston Bombshells
were hard fought from start to finish and showed a high
quality standard of netball from both teams.
C Grade kicked off the night in an outstanding and
exciting match. Very even across both teams, the girls
showed some outstanding passages of play with the
game resulting in a draw 19-19. B Grade was a tough
match against a strong Frankston side but the girls
showed much spirit and fight and fought their way back
into the game in the second half resulting in a loss of only
11 goals. A Grade was a ripper of a match, with the lead
changing almost every minute. It was here Pearcedale
really showed their improvement, coming out with a 1
goal victory over Frankston- great work girls!
Round 1 brings much excitement as we turn to face
Devon Meadows for not only the Panther Cup, but a
highly anticipated 2015 Grand Final rematch. Good luck
to all teams!
Rosebud Buds
Under 17s – Great first game by the girls as a whole
team. Ebony (the defender) bringing out 99% goaling
percentage helped us keep a nice lead, the defenders
keeping their game faces on for the full hour and keeping
the ball right out of Rye’s goal circle and the mid courters
making it fly down the court! Can’t wait for the year ahead
with this awesome bunch of girls! C-Grade - It’s a new
look team in 2016 with a new coach, some u17 coming
up and the addition of some new faces there is a real
positive vibe around the girls. This year we are looking
to improve our skills get some fluency happening in our
game and have fun whilst doing it! The Rye game we
went into unsure of what opposition we would be up
against and even though they once again proved too
good for our girls there was some real positives to take
out of the games with the score line being dramatically
improved from the same game last year and things we
have been working on at training being implemented
during the game. Best on for the day was Ali Raphael
doing all that was asked for her and much more and
providing some stability through the court and runner
up Meredith Woods again putting in 100% effort and
getting some reward for her effort. We look forward to
a spirited contest against Dromana! B-Grade – Game
day awards went to Jess Smith and Jessica Smith. A
highlight of the day was the unveiling of the updated
netball facilities including the shelter, sponsors banner
and new look dresses – well done to everyone involved
in bringing this together. A-Grade – We beat rye!!!! Woo
hoo first time since 2009! Emma White shrugged off her
nerves & showed her talent with Loz shooting like a star.
Millie (new) flew herself across the court like velvet. Beth
sparked in her new position of defence. All together the
TEAM work really exciting!

Somerville Eagles
On Easter Saturday we hosted Tyabb at home. After some
drizzle in the morning, the C girls could have questioned
if they were playing on an ice skating rink rather than
a netball court. Thankfully the courts dried up for the
A & B games! A big shout out to Becky Dixon & Darren
Sharp that have did an amazing job cleaning the courts
last weekend! Hopefully there is no rain today! The newlook C team had a fantastic win against Tyabb. There
were some nerves before the game but the whole team
played with confidence & should be set for a successful
year! The B team suffered some injuries before the game,
the infamous ‘foot’ sidelined Maddy & Kay was nursing a
leg injury, however after a great second quarter (16-2),
the girls were able to secure a win against last season’s
premiers. The A team were not able to come away with
the 4 points, however there were plenty of positives.
Thank you to Erin that skipped a wedding to be out on
court! We know your mum was not impressed… but we
love your dedication!
All the best for all three teams today against Rye. We look
forward to celebrating 3 from 3.

Tyabb Yabbies
Round one was exactly what we expected with all teams
playing inconsistent netball, however, there were plenty
of positives signs that new combinations will settle & work
well given some time & practice. Despite experiencing
a loss, C grade started well & successfully applied the
strategies practised at training. Jayde was great in her
first senior game with her closing speed & ability to read
the ball causing problems for Sommie. Jaye stood tall in
goals providing a great target & was able to
finish her shots accurately. This week the girls aim to
move the ball with greater patience to secure their
first win. The B grade score line was very unattractive
from Tyabb’s perspective but the girls gain confidence
from their ball movement & have faith in their ability to
bounce back. Kylie lead from the front with her defensive
pressure & drive. She contested every ball & never gave
up all game. Leonie really controlled the tempo & linked
well with Chloe in patches. A grade was our only win of
the day but coach Keira wants to see more
patience in attack & better options across the court.
Izzy was outstanding in her ability to put doubt in the
opposition’s mind & cause them to turn the ball over. In
her first A grade match Jess was a strong target in goals
& worked beautifully with H to open up space. Today
we welcome Frankston as we unfurl our 3 premiership
flags. The pressure is on all teams to regain victory & once
again display the quality netball we expect at Tyabb.

Dromana Tigers
Well what a great great start to the season with 4 big
wins on the board. Starting with Renae Moorehead and
her amazing U17’s its so exciting to see so much talent
coming up through the juniors this is the first year we
are seeing the fruits of labor with starting Junior netball
at Dromana there has been alot of hard work done over
the last few years and its starting to pay off the future is
looking very bright at tiger land. Awards went to Matilda
Ord and Tessa McDonald. C Grade have a new playing
coach this year in Kiandra Ball and for a team that was
thrown together at the last minute they did an amazing
job with a few more games together this is a very
promising side, Awards went to Gabbi Peters and Terrina
Davies. Sarz has taken on the job with B Grade this year
and the turn out to training has been very exciting and
it is already showing on court.Awards went to Caitlyn
Heseltine and Rivvy Walters ( No Burpies for you this
week) Bec Bacon is back again with our new look A Grade
side it has been extremely exciting to have so many new
players this year in all grade and we are looking forward
to a great year. Awards went to Bri O’Brien and Kristi
Brinksma.
This week see’s us up against Rosebud which is always
a hard fought clash, good luck to everyone GO TIGES!!

Devon Meadows Panthers
2015 season thankyou for all your lessons, 2016 we are
ready !
This season has come around very fast, and the girls have
all worked hard over pre-season which included a fittness
camp ran by our senior coaches. With a large senior list ,
the girls have participated in a range of fittness sessions
this offseason, ranging from beach sessions, stair
climbing, boxing, cyling and they even gave yoga a go
(we finally found out that our president Lucy Dehey sucks
at something)! !
We would like to welcome new coaches Kim (Agrade)
and Tanie (C grade) to the club this season, and welcome
back Sandra (Bgrade). The club this year is very fortunate
to have A grade level standard coaches, in all grades.
This year, it is evident that all coaches are on the same
pathway and want the same thing- a flag! !
Good luck to our captains for the season, those beingLucy Dehey (Agrade), Nat Fallon (Bgrade), Stacey Di Coco
(Cgrade) and Kiarah Rochford (U17’s). !
In the off season, two little cubs were born, so
congratulations to Zoe Dehey with the arrival of Zac and
Brooke Harvey on the arrival of Kai. !!
Good luck to all the girls in their first games today,
hopefully the new dresses bring you some luck!
Sorrento Sharks
The easter round saw the girls headed down to Dromana,
unfortunately we were unable to come away with a win.
All the u17s girls played really well, and never gave up.
Brooke and Macy worked hard in defence and stayed
really strong throughout the whole game, the girls
caught up in the third quarter and were only down by
2 points however unfortunately came away with a loss,
they really showed how strong they can play as a team.
C Grade Unfortunately didn’t come away with the result
we’d hoped for against Dromana on Thursday night but
every single player on that court put in all they had.
We showed a great level of ability in certain aspects of
the game and didn’t drop our heads despite what the
scoreboard showed. We continued to strive for a win until
the time ran out and all the girls should be proud of the
persistence and drive they showed.
B Grade girls also put in all they had, Meg did an
outstanding job in the middle court and never stopped
giving it all she had, Anna and Jen played back together
in goals and really put up a fight against some tough
defense!
A grade put up a great fight, knowing it was always going
to be tough but we were really pleased with the effort
from the team. All of the girls played really well and we
are very excited for what’s to come this season. We were
impressed with how well we could stay in the game and
proved we are capable. It’s going to be a big year
Go Sharks!

Rye Demons
Red Hill Hills
The clubs first games of the season were a mixed bag. The
17’s opened proceedings and played a great competitive
game. Our young girls gained confidence as the game
progressed but they struggled to put the score on
the board early and unfortunately lost. This team will
improve each week. The C and B grade teams both won
their matches convincingly and their shared experience
with each other is their strength. Some of these ladies
have been playing together for a number of years and
they know they can rely on each other. The A grade
match was another story as our girls struggled to find the
right combinations which saw Rosebud take the win. It
was a positive start to the season and we all enjoyed the
day. Good luck this week. Go Dee’s.
Welcome to the 2016 Netball Season. Lisa Vines and
Sophie Fletcher are both continuing on as the A and B
Grade Coaches respectively. They are joined this season
by Kitty Wilson and Nicola Mold coaching the C Grade
and Tania Shannon coaching the U17 girls. Good luck in
all grades.
Our summer has been very busy with 12 new players
joining. We have lost 4 players, so there is plenty of
competition for places on match days. Christine Morgan
has also joined us in the Administration area and will
ensure that all girls are registered and paid up with the
VNA and Club Memberships. Please see Christine if you
haven’t already paid your membership.
The girls have also been very active in trying to help
raise money for improved Netball facilities (Netball Court
hopefully at some stage) but helping with the Car Show,
Red Hill Market and Red Hill Show. Thanks very much for
your extra effort in these areas.
Good luck to all teams today.
Crib Point Magpies
Crib Point has had a very solid pre-season across all
4 grades. We have maintained consistent numbers
throughout the weeks which has set us up for what we
hope to be our best season yet! On the courts this year
you will see some familiar faces, with most of the girls
returning from last season. We have welcomed back
some players from both; injuries and having a break. Also
we have welcomed some brand new players into the Crib
Point Family! This has a created a positive vibe around the
nest and created some diversity amongst each team. As
well as new players, we have gained two very gorgeous
baby mascots, India and Ollie; who without a doubt are
going to be the best looking bubs donning the black and
white this year! I am pleased to announce Belinda Keays
will be spreading her knowledge and expertise as our
A grade player/coach this season, she has a lot to offer
our A Grade team and I know the girls are very excited to
have her. B Grade coach will again be Adrienne Harris hoping to take her girls one step further this season! Leah
Moncrieff has taken on the C Grade role and is looking
forward to working with a great bunch of girls. Jane
Piotrowski has made the leap from coaching juniors into
coaching the 17s. Jane is a former senior player and has a
lot of expertise to share with the 17’s. Cribby is definitely
a club to look out for this season! We are fully prepared
for what will be an epic season and are excited to get out
on the court; round one against Red Hill! Good luck girls!
