Since the market began back in 1999, it’s become an established favourite and a key part of the Christmas calendar for families throughout the region. This year’s market is the biggest ever with nearly 120 stalls offering a great choice of gifts and crafts as well as a tempting array of food and drinks. We hope that there’s something for everyone and whilst many of the stallholders return year after year, there are around forty attending for the first time this year, so there will be plenty of new attractions to look out for. Our Bandstand will once again feature live festive music, much of it provided by local schools and we’ll have family favourites such as Punch and Judy and Bill Brookman’s street entertainers as well as our regular fairground rides. Special thanks this year to NewRiver, the new owners of the Beacon Shopping Centre who have agreed to waive parking fees in the multi-storey car park so that you can browse the market at your leisure. And look out for the newly refurbished Library which will once again play a key role in the weekend. Once you’ve browsed the market, why not take the time to visit our town centre shops and complete your Christmas shopping. Have a great market and we look forward to welcoming you back in 2014. ...Perfect for party season! Commentating on the market David Bavaird Chair of the Chamber stated ‘The Victorian Market significantly increases the footfall in the town centre with all age groups well represented and is a real opportunity to showcase North Shields which we also had earlier this year with the Proper Food and Drink Festival and we look forward to this year’s Victorian Market building on the success of the market from previous years’. Chamber Attend State of the Area Event 2013 The Chamber were pleased to attend the State of the Area Event 2013 where over 120 people attended including key decision makers, representatives from the community and voluntary sector, local business leaders and members of North Tyneside’s diverse communities. The event, which took place on 22nd October at the Langdale Centre, focussed on tackling the big challenges we face in North Tyneside. The event had an intergenerational feel due to the involvement of some of the borough’s children and young people. Balliol School Choir performed a collection of songs. Delegates heard from the Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn and were presented with an update on National Citizen Service and two of its graduates who told how working together and listening to people delivers life-changing results. There were five workshops for delegates to take part in which focused on Health Inequalities, Community Safety, Jobs and Skills, Educational attainment and Welfare reform. The outcomes of these workshops will shape the work plan of the North Tyneside Strategic Partnership. Metro’s new smart ticketing system us up and running Following the extensive redevelopment in our Metro station in North Shields, Nexus, which owns, manages and is modernising Metro, has installed automatic ticket gates and smartcard validators across the Metro system. The Metro ticket gates are being switched on in phases to give customers time to get used to them. All passengers holding a valid Pop card or smart Gold Card will be asked to ‘touch in’ and ‘touch out’ each time they enter or exit the Metro system, using the yellow validators or the orange card readers on the new ticket gates. Smartcard customers have to ‘touch in’ and ‘touch out’ as they start and finish their journey. The ticket gates have an orange reader on them, and smartcard customers should always touch their smartcard on them as they pass through. All other stations have yellow validators at the entrances and exits to the platforms. Smartcard customers should always touch their smartcard on them when entering or leaving the station. Metro staff will always be on hand to assist passengers at stations where ticket gates are up and running. The gates are being switched on in a phased programme before all 13 gated Metro stations go fully operational in 2014. Director General of Nexus, Bernard Garner, said: “The new ticket gates will transform the way that customers access the Metro system. This is a significant moment in our £389m Metro modernisation programme.“ The gates are being switched on in phases so that passengers have plenty of time to get used to them “I’m confident that Metro users will quickly get used to the gates and won’t have any trouble using them.” Follow the Chamber on Twitter In order to improve the communication of events in the town the Chamber has now joined the world of twitter using the website to promote events in the town and to increase communication of key information to members, businesses, residents and visitors to the town. Over the four years of First World War, the old Borough of Tynemouth (which included North Shields and Cullercoats) suffered the staggering loss of almost 2,000 men killed – around double the national average. Yet the war’s impact on Tynemouth and the human stories behind these huge losses are not so well known, hidden only in the memory of a few very elderly residents. Tynemouth World War One Commemoration Project is determined that the sacrifice of the town’s families should not be forgotten. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project has enrolled more than 60 volunteers who have been engaged in a range of activities from a base in the Linskill Community Centre – many of which will be brought to fruition in the summer of 2014, when the nation begins to mark the centenary of the Great War. F i r s t p u b l i s h e d i n 1 9 1 9 , t h e Tynemouth Roll of Honour recorded the names of 1,700 local men killed in the war. Since 2010 our volunteers have been working hard researching the lives and war-service of all of these men to update the borough’s Roll of Honour – and in June 2014 a superb online database will go live, providing a freely accessible source of fascinating biographical information. The project is now gearing up for a very busy 2014 and would welcome more volunteers to help us prepare to commemorate the centenary of the war. We hope that many of you will be able to join us and participate in the events planned for next year, and take the opportunity to learn more about the local men who gave their lives in the four years of struggle – on land and on sea – as well as the hardships that affected the families they left behind on the home front. Further details about the programme of events shown below can be found at our website. www.tynemouthworldwarone.org The project is a volunteer led group formed to research the stories of the 1,700 individuals, named on the former Borough of Tynemouth Roll of Honour, who died between 1914 and 1921 as a result of the Great War. Its main aim is to create a comprehensive web-based resource for family history research and future use by schools, colleges, community groups and others. The project is also presenting a number of events and activities including: • A series of informal talks at the Low Lights Tavern in North Shields • A season of free lectures in association with Northumbria University • An exhibition of records, artefacts and finds uncovered by the researchers • A commemorative service in Northumberland Square on 3 August 2014 • A specially commissioned play ‘Death at Dawn’ written by North East playwright Peter Mortimer to be performed at the Linskill Centre 1- 6 September 2014 • A commemorative concert in conjuction with the ABF - the soldiers’ charity, at The Sage Gateshead on 27 September 2014 Follow the project’s progress on Twitter at: twitter.com/TynemouthWW1 For more details, or to volunteer, visit our website at: www.tynemouthworldwarone.org or call into Room B9, Linskill Community Centre, Linskill Terrace, North Shields, Monday to Friday, 10am - 4pm. A s an Ofsted registered nursery, Linskill Nursery (which was awarded nursery status in September 2012) is eminently able to offer the highest quality child care and child-centered learning. Details of the depth and extent of the leaning opportunities and experiences the children will be offered, as well as the Philosophy of the Nursery, can be found on their website. Learning through play and experimentation provides a solid base for the further development of a well rounded personality. The Linskill Nursery is situated in the Linskill Centre on Linskill Terrace, and so is between North Shields and Tynemouth. The nursery provides an equally high standard of care, education, protection and safety whether the child attends each day or for just a few hours a week. They offer flexible, affordable hourly rates as some parents struggle to find a nursery with the flexibility needed to accommodate their work-related hours. In 2013, The Linskill Nursery made a much needed relocation within the Centre itself, increasing the number of places available from 26 to 39 places. This means that the staff are able to offer full day care to children aged from 6 weeks to 5 years. As well as a new indoor area, the nursery now has a brand new garden which was finished in July 2013. The children couldn’t wait to open the gate of the garden which is designed so that they can run, jump, climb and balance in the utmost safety. There are opportunities for children to tend vegetable plots and flower beds, watch the ducks or simply sit and draw, sing or listen to stories. The garden has two small pods which make great ‘dens’ for the children, and in each pod there is a ‘talking’ flower whereby the children can communicate with one another. Another new feature is the ‘interactive wall’ which consists of natural materials, noise-making toys and a ‘bug house’ enabling the children to have a range of sensory experiences. Because the garden is designed to provide holistic experiences, the children’s physical development is catered for by means of balance beams and a climbing frame. This will give the children a chance to enjoy exercise in a fun way and will, hopefully, give them a future blueprint for the enjoyment exercise can bring.
