LindenGrove Fall 2010 TODAY A quarterly publication for residents, employees, friends and family “Earth laughs in flowers” -- Ralph Waldo Emerson O ur Waukesha campus has been blessed with the gracious gift of a patio garden. Some of you may recall what the back patio looked like prior. All that was there was a concrete slab with two wooden garden boxes. Needless to say, the flowers where not colorful nor were they blooming. The pergola allows much needed shade so that our residents can watch the grandchildren play on the playground equipment. This space now is warm and inviting. The generous gifts allowed us to make this a place for our residents and families to come and enjoy each others company and build new memories. We would like to thank everyone for the donations to the LindenGrove Foundation which now allow us to stop and smell the flowers. Our residents were dazzled by the variety of costumes and the talents displayed by the many young people who came to perform. The name of the show was at “The Movies” with several costume changes and dancing to familiar show tunes. Kids Korp performs nationally as a non-competitive and not for profit performing troope. Kids Korp is partially funded by the Wisconsin’s Art Board. Antique and Vintage Car Show esident, families, and members from the community enjoyed a night of nostalgia at LindenGroveMenomonee Falls. Antique and vintage cars were on display and their owners were on hand to share stories with those in attendance regarding how their cars had been restored and other fun tales. The night was clear and cool while participants were able to get an up close look at these incredible cars. Root beer float were on tap and Roger Boll provided strolling accordion music. A resident at LindenGrove had the opportunity to display a rare and unique vehicle of their own. An amphibious car made in Germany complete with life preservers under the hood and a propeller on the tail made a great conversation piece. Children were invited to spend the day and participate in activities with the residents. Children enjoyed a hot dog lunch outside of the patio, followed by crafts. Residents in the decorated wheelchairs were pushed by the children and visitors and paraded around the back patio for all bystanders to see. The afternoon came to an end with an ice cream social for all the residents, children, and staff. Margaret Hanson is happy to have her wheelchair decorated for a contest that was part of Children’s Day at LindenGrove O ur residents enjoyed an old favorite pastime of picnicking and fishing at Menomonee Park. After enjoying a lunch with a refreshing glass of lemonade residents tried their best at catching the “big one”. It was a great day and residents enjoyed good food, good company, and beautiful surroundings. So the story goes state record fish were caught that day but released to grow bigger for next years fishing outing. -4- Quality • Excellence M U K WO N A G O C A M P U S Service Red Hat Brewer Game T he Red Hat Society at LindenRidge, along with other Red Hatters, tailgated before the game on July8th. This has been an annual trip to Miller Park for the passed 6 years or so. Everyone had plenty to eat and enjoyed the game. J uly was a great month to go fishing. Just ask Otto and Bernie. Linden Court in Mukwonago visited the Trout Farm in Palmyra where residents caught about 15 fish for their up coming fish fry. -5- Quality • Excellence Service M E N O M O N E E FA L L S New Treatment Technique Offered at LindenGrove L indenGrove-Menomonee Falls hosted a 16 hour continuing education workshop for physical and occupational therapists on a treatment technique called Kinesio Taping. Judy Kieffer is a prime example. She is a member of the Photography Club at LindenGrove-New Berlin. After a class in photography, Judy took her camera along on a community outing to the Mitchell Domes. Here a click, there a click…and the results… her pictures turned out so beautifully that she entered one into the Milwaukee County Fair. Pictured here is Judy holding the picture she took with the ribbon from the Fair. Dog Circus D og what? Yep, you read it right! A Dog Circus came to LindenGroveNew Berlin. Fun for all! The dogs were jumping through hoops, doing spins and turns, weaving, and we cannot forget the costumes. Who knew a Doberman could look like an elephant! e can’t get enough entertainment. The Golden Hawaiians came to dance for everyone. Since we love to have fun…we thought everyone at LindenGrove-New Berlin would dress up as well. The day took its toll on Tilly the cat. Here she is… resting after all the festivities. This year, the Ridge contributed to the local Jack-o-Lantern Jaunt by decorating an oversized pumpkin. Afterwards it was delivered for display at the Mukwonago Field Park Pavilion. Residents gathered for a brain-storming of decorating ideas, as they used a white board to finalize the design. After the design was decided upon, the task of cutting the top of the great pumpkin was a chore. Residents watched as Activities were able to cut it open and everyone took a turn scooping the seeds from the inside. Then it was on to the decoration of the face! The residents were pleased with the finished results. The Great Pumpkin was delivered to the jaunt on Friday, October 15th, by Administrator Vern Larson, just in time for the event. From leftto right: Resident Harriet Rumsey, Activity CoordinatorLeann Hengel, and Resident Martha Adams. Linden Ridge Patio Party & Open House for the Front Porch Project T hrough many resident suggestions, the Linden Ridge Patio Project began over a year ago with the seed of improving the outdoor patio space at the front of the Ridge. The residents gave their ideas at many Resident Council meetings. Residents wanted to sit farther back from the road in the front of the building, in addition to having more seating. They also wanted some sort of protection from the harsh summer sun. Through many generous donations throughout the year, Linden Ridge was able to complete this project by the end of this summer, and the results have been beautiful. Residents really enjoy sitting outdoors in groups on nice days, while watching people come and go. It really has become a gathering spot for the residents. To celebrate the -8- Jack Peterson enjoying refreshments at the Ridge Front Patio Open House Quality • Excellence M U K WO N A G O C A M P U S Service East Troy Concert in the Park T he concert in the park in East Troy is always a popular event for a summer evening outing for the Residents of LindenGrove. On Thursday, July 22, Swing Nuevo was the featured act. They performed a nice combination of selections that included swing and jazz numbers from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s by such favorites as Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and The Andrews Sisters. Everyone from the Grove who went on the outing thoroughly enjoyed the musical performance. It was a beautiful evening for listening to the music. Family Night A fter a short break for the summer months, we brought back Family Night. On Thursday, September 30, we invited family members and loved ones to join in an activity after dinner. This month we asked for volunteers brave enough to perform during our karaoke/sing along. We are planning on having Family Night one time per month for the rest of the year. Family Night provides an opportunity for family and loved ones to interact in some light hearted fun and refreshments. -9- Save the Date Saturday, December 11th 1:30 - 3:00p.m. Mukwonago Campus Christmas Party Entertainment Food Visit from Santa Pictures Quality • Excellence NEW BERLIN Service P ictured here are just a few of the example of our celebration State Fair week. We had Dairy Day- tasted samples of milk…banana, strawberry, chocolate, and buttermilk just to name a few. We displayed crafts of staff and residents. Who knew we had so much talent. We also invited a petting zoo…what is cuter than this pot belly pig?! Of course, we can’t forget the food: of the fair such as cream puffs, grilled corn, ice cream and more!! S ummer brought us a way to watch first hand the circle of life. Monarchs lay their eggs on milkweed every year. Once the eggs are in place, we take the leaves and place them in an aquarium. Then, all we do is watch and wait. First we see the baby caterpillar. Next, he starts to eat the milkweed and grows big and fat. After that, they form the chrysalis and we wait. Once the chrysalis become clear, we can see the monarch ready to emerge. Finally, they emerge and once the wings are dry, it’s time to let them free outside in the garden. Day by day, everyone looks forward to seeing how the process is going. - 10 - Quality • Excellence Service Country Day W e just can’t get enough fun at LindenGrove-New Berlin! We celebrated the country life in western gear galore. What can be more country than Square Dancing? Nothing. So of course the residents and staff spent an afternoon of do-se-dos, swinging our partners, bowing to our corners, and promenades. Everyone had so much fun…they want to do it again. CELEBRATING THE 60’S W hat better way to celebrate the 1960’s than to have a tie dye day? Staff and residents dressed up in their favorite tie dye shirts. We started off the day making tie dye cupcakes, and added tie dye frosting. Later, everyone had their hands “tied” up making colorful scarves. Pictured here is Lorraine showing off some examples of our fun. And yes…the cupcakes tasted as good as they looked!! - 11 - NEW BERLIN Quality • Excellence WAU K E S H A C A M P U S Service Pancake Breakfast & Linden Fair T his year we combined two of our biggest events into one! However, the weather wasn’t on board with us. At least not for the start of our event. With all the tents in place and the tables and games ready we had to make some quick changes to accommodate the down pouring of rain, booms of thunder and bolts of lightening! Needless to say our Ecumenical Church Service was held inside and we got a bit of a delayed start with the games, silent auction baskets and serving of pancakes. We still managed to make the most of it and have a fun day! Besides enjoying the delicious Henneberry Pancakes with toppings from the Elegant Farmer, we enjoyed the music of The Banjo Barons. Prior to enjoying Tom Jahnke play his accordion, we crowned the “Fairest of the Fair.” Crowned as LindenHeights King & Queen were Ralph Ebersperger and Elizabeth Braun. LindenGrove’s King & Queen were Frank Gabrysiak and Nathalyn Warner. Thank you to all those who contributed in anyway! Well, tradition for us at LindenGrove-Waukesha in July is that we create a 20 foot banana split! What could be more fun on a Friday afternoon in the summer than that? It’s a shared effort between staff, residents, family members and volunteers to build this awesome treat and to scoop it out! We’re not sure which is quicker, scooping it up or dishing it out. No matter, it’s a fun filled and tasty event. Patio Performances A nother successful series of Summer Patio Performances occurred. The weather cooperated which is big relief. Throughout the summer residents and families enjoyed entertainment from Greg Driss on guitar, Dan Naumann and his Patriotic Tribute, the awesome costumes and dancing by Kids Korp, the sweet sounds from the Burlington Ukulele Band and the sounds of old time banjo music with David Towle. The summer of 2011, we’ll bring our concerts to our newly redone and dedicated back patio! Join us for BINGO Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2:30 with St. William’s Youth Monday, Nov. 15 at 2:00 with St. Joe’s Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 6:00 with VFW - 13 - Quality • Excellence WAU K E S H A C A M P U S Service Summer Trips S ome of our residents enjoyed getting out into the community. A group from Cedar Grove spent an afternoon at Frame Park enjoying its beauty. Two trips were made to cheer on the Brewers! Once on July 8 and again on August 12. For the first trip Ella requested we have signs to wave. So, Joanne, our receptionist made some great signs that were waved proudly. The first game outing was on a pretty warm day, so the ice cream treat really hit the spot! The summer has to include a trip to the Zoo and we did so on August 24th. It was especially enjoyed by Elizabeth R., a Dogwood Court resident. Her granddaughter accompanied her on the trip and we met one of her grandsons at the Zoo who just happens to be the train conductor! All of us enjoyed the opportunity to walk around and see the animals and other visitors too. We topped it off once again with an ice cream treat. - 14 - Quality • Excellence WAU K E S H A C A M P U S Service LindenGrove-Waukesha Upcoming Events Family Caregiver Support Group Second Thursday of the month. 8:00 am – 9:00 am Music Performances Thursday, November 4 ~ 6:00pm Ragtime Music with Doug Haise Celebration of Life Quarterly Memorial Service held to remember residents who have passed away the previous three months. The colors are starting to come. We have planned outings to see the changing colors. The youth from Harvey Philips School are going to help our Elders carve pumpkins to put on the patio for Halloween. Family, staff, and friends are invited to dress up in costume and come for Safe Trick or Treat at Linden Court on Sunday Oct. 31st. We have a new program called “Rhythm Band” that will be taught once a month by Rise for the Elders. Our elders really enjoy making music and being creative. We will be making cards throughout October for our Veterans. Our Elders will be making necklaces and bracelets for Operation Christmas Child. Our summer was busy with trips to the Zoo and many special events. Thanks to Judy Freyer, LPN, and her husband for bringing in their chickens! We all enjoyed Judy’s humorous “chicken” stories. On August 24th, Deacon John celebrated a special blessing on Linden Court, our building, all of our Elders, families, staff members and volunteers. We gathered afterwards to have punch and treats. We would like to welcome a new “little” addition to our Linden Court family. Brandy, a golden lab puppy, comes to visit daily! She is the pet of our CNA, Laura Hapke. Although just a puppy, Brandy has the makings of a great Pet Therapy Dog! She brings lots of laughs and comfort to our Elders, staff and families. Please watch our monthly newsletter for upcoming trips and special events! - 16 - Quality • Excellence F O U N DA T I O N Service LindenGrove Golf Classic - A ‘Hole in One’ for the Foundation P erfect weather for playing golf raised spirits and hopefully lowered scores of the 98 golfers who participated in the 10th Annual LindenGrove Golf Classic on September 14 to benefit the LindenGrove Foundation.
