Promotion hopes dashed
LAT28 La Fiamma coach Joseph
Italiano conceded his team's promo-
tion hopes may have gone on the
back of Saturday's 1-0 loss to
Bassendean Caledonian at the
Geraldton Telstra Shop Arena.
Alexander Fazekas swooped on a
clumsy goal kick by the Reds and
slotted the ball past Adam Friday 30
minutes into the second half.
The Reds were hopeful a win over
fourth-placed Bassendean would
keep alive their dream of an ascent
to the MySolar third division.
Football West is believed to be
lining up promotion to the top four
finishers. This is to accommodate
for a new Saturday competition.
Though the concept is yet to be
confirmed, Italiano said any chance
his team had looked to have passed.
"We've just got to win all of our
games and hope that the teams
above us lose. There's a lot of luck
that needs to go our way," he said.
Injuries didn't help the Reds'
cause. Centre-back Josh Duncan
(ankle) left the field after just
minutes and Thomas Arthurs pulled
a hamstring minutes after coming
on from the bench after the break.
La Fiamma came closest to scoring when Kris Gough forced a brilliant
close-range save from
Bassendean's keeper.
But attacking options were lacking for the home side. Keegan Roos
was given a rough ride by the visitors' sturdy back four.
Italiano said his team's intensity
could not be faulted, but blamed
decision-making for the defeat.
"We showed good enthusiasm and
intensity but we didn't do enough to
control it and build on our possession," he said.
Three of the Reds' four remaining
games are on the road. Their run
home begins with an away test to
Swan United on Sunday, followed by
a trip to face bottom side Morley
City the next week.
The home crowd has one
last
chance to rally behind the Geraldton
camp against Subiaco on September
17.

Glory star talks up
pathways for players
CICC
FORMER Perth Glory star and
current Football West develop-
ment officer Jamie Harnwell
has visited Albany over the past
three days promoting the sport
of soccer.
Visiting Albany for only the
second time, Harnwell said he
loved venturing out into the
country regions.
"Something I was briefed on
when I got the job was getting
out to the regions and using my
profile as a former Glory player
to promote football," he said.

takes a lot of hard work and perseverance," Harnwell said.
"I never made into State teams

broke through, I tell kids never

The continued rise of country

the future a way of indentifying

Soccer on a roll
PERTH Glory legend and Football West development
officer Jamie Harnwell was in Albany this week to
promote the sport.
Harnwell's visit included basic coaching sessions at
schools and more intense workshops with country week
teams and high performance players.
He also gave a coaching course for coaches.
Harnwell said it was important to ensure there was
a definite pathway for junior players to senior level to
ensure they remained in the sport.
"There are massive numbers playing juniors, not only
here in Albany but in Perth," he said. "We want to make
sure they keep playing as they get older."
Harnwell has been with Football West since April
and part of his brief was to get out into the regions.
"It's good to get out and promote the game," he said.
"Albany is the last stop of my state-wide tour."

"If that's their vision, how do they
justify spending nearly $100 million
at nib Stadium," Mr Cook said.
"The Government just seems to be
making this claim about a vision for a
precinct, but there is clearly no follow
through."
GARETH PARKER
Shadow sport and recreation minister Roger Cook has challenged the
Barnett Government to put flesh on
undermined by its commitment to
spend $95 million upgrading rectangular nib Stadium on the other side of
the Swan River in East Perth.
When he announced the Government's choice for the site of a new
60,000-seat football stadium in June,
Premier Colin Barnett said a key
advantage over rival sites Subiaco
and the East Perth power station was
that Burswood was unconstrained by
surrounding development "which
will allow us to achieve the vision of a
world-class stadium precinct".
The Langoulant stadium task force
said Burswood would cost far more
than Sub iaco or East Perth but its key
advantage was the opportunity to
build multiple sporting facilities,
Sport and Recreation Minister
Terry Waldron said the Government
was following the two-stadium strategy outlined in the Langoulant report
with the redevelopment of nib Stadi-
um and the construction of a new
major stadium on a greenfields site.
He said the strategy had received
strong endorsement from the major
sporting codes, citing Football Federation of Australia chief Ben Buckley's
comments on Tuesday that soccer
would soon have "two wonderful
options" to stage games.

Emirates
consider
WA base
JONATHAN COOK
The United Arab Emirates'
Olympic team is considering
using Perth as a training base
next month following Dubai
club Al Ahli's successful tour.
Al Ahli officials gave their
seal of approval after a threeweek stay culminated in a 1-1
draw with Perth Glory at nib
Stadium on Tuesday night.
Football West chief executive
Peter Hugg said the UAE Olympic team was now keen to train
in Perth in the lead-up to the
September 21 qualifier against
Australia in Adelaide.
"More and more we will have a
link with that part of the world
and hopefully we will start
developing a reputation," Hugg
said.
"We are also investigating the
possibility of taking a WA State
team to the UAE."
On Tuesday, around 1800 fans
watched Glory take a first-half
lead through a Jacob Burns
deflected shot, but that was can-
celled out in stoppage time by
Grafite's header.
There were some encouraging
signs for Glory, particularly the
return to action of defender
Chris Coyne, who had not played
since February last year after a
loan period in China and an
Achilles injury on his return.

Key man to miss cup clash
David Andrews
THE Dunsborough Towners
will get their first chance of
the season to see how they
will operate without the
services of outstanding central defender Eric Parna
when they meet Collie in
the semi-final of the
Premier Reserve League
South West Cup on Sunday.
Parna left this week for a
short holiday in Bali and will
return in time for the last
league encounter of the sea-
son against Australind the
following week.
His inclusion for that match
is vital with the Towners
needing a point to secure the
league
title
following
Bunbury United's 7-3 victory
over Australind on Sunday.
A loss will mean Bunhury
snatching the title on goal
difference.
Paula's
time
in
Dunsborough is quickly coming to an end with his visa set
to run out early in October
forcing his return to Estonia.
He is clearly the best player
to have worn a Towners shirt
and is the best player I have
seen in the South West since I
moved to Dunsborough five
years ago.
He is a calm influence in
defence with immaculate distribution and combines well
with his co-defenders to give
the Towners the best defence
in the competition.
This week player-coach
Stuart Gidley will have to put
Missing: Eric Parna
his thinking cap on how best
to cover Parna's loss, and he
doesn't have a lot of players
at his disposal as is the usual
prediction for the Towners at
this end of the season
The obvious choice is dropping Terry McBride or him-
self to the sweeper's role
though this will weaken the
midfield.
Despite sitting at the bottom
of the league ladder with an
inferior goal difference to
Australind it would be dangerous to take Collie lightly
because it is in cup matches
that upsets traditionally
occur.

Mixed bag in
Rovers results
MIKE COLEY
MANJIMUP Rovers beat Bunbury Dynamos men, but
lost to Harvey women at a wet and windy Collier Street
complex on Sunday.
The women's game was a late kick-off due to Harvey
not making the venue on time and Manjimup had their
eight stalwarts ready for battle.
Martjimup were caught napping when Harvey scored
their first goal of a closely fought game by Rovers, with a
final score of 6-4 to the visitors.
Team captain Candice Barley lead from the front and
netted Rovers' first goal with a solo run through the
centre.
Rovers' second goal came when Rebecca Fall accurately headed a Megan Smith centering corner to find the
back of the Harvey net.
The second half saw some field changes for Rovers
when coach Eric Scott put Megan Smith in goal and Caitlin Prunster from defence to an unfamiliar role up front.
The home side showed the same determination but was
out-numbered and could not cover all bases.
However Prunster showed her versatility by scoring
two goals for Rovers, leaving a very respectable final
score of 6-4 to the visitors.
The men's game should have been a foregone conclusion for visiting first division league leaders Bunbury
Dynamos. However, Manjimup Rovers played one of the
best games this season beating the visitors 4-1.
Most of the game was played in heavy wind-blown
rain which seemed to suit the home side.
Dynamos played as a well-drilled unit but were lacking
in front of goal, unable to punish Rovers when mistakes
were made.
Rovers' Mark Gale opened the scoring at the 13th min-
ute from an indirect free kick inside the box taken by
Brian Ross.
The green and gold gelled on the day and played with
more self-belief which culminated in Tallon Burns scoring two goals before half time and finishing the day with
a sizzling hat-trick at the 61st minute.
Rovers' women play a re-scheduled match next
Saturday versus Dynamos and on Sunday the men host
Blackwood United in the SWSA Cup semi-final, both games to be played at home.

WA:Revamp of WA rugby stadium a step closer
PERTH, Aug 23 AAP - The redevelopment of Western Australia's premier rectangular stadium is a
step closer with the state government wrapping up negotiations with the local council.
WA Premier Colin Barnett handed a $5 million cheque to the City of Vincent on Tuesday as part of taking
over the lease for nib Stadium; the home of Super Rugby side the Western Force and A-League team
Perth Glory.
The $95 million redevelopment will get under way in July or August next year and include a new twotiered eastern grandstand, which is currently an unsheltered, temporary scaffolding structure.
About $7 million will be spent on corporate facilities, and the turf will be upgraded.
Sports Minister Terry Waldron said it became evident the stadium wasn't up to scratch at the Rabbitohs
versus Broncos NRL game in June, when heavy rains turned the field into a dam and left fans soaked.
"We need those good facilities particularly for the general public (because) if you were there for the
Broncos-South Sydney game, with the weather, it's just not good enough," he said.
The $5 million cheque is expected to be spent partly on the refurbishment of the Beatty Park Leisure
Park whose pool was the centrepiece of the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.
However, City of Vincent Mayor Nick Catania said the council still had to determine how much would
actually be spent on the historic venue.
"It's $5 million the government has given to us and the government doesn't say you've got to spend it on
Beatty Park, but the majority of it will of course," Mr Catania said.
The $17 million redevelopment of the 50-year-old facility will see a new 10-lane pool, a complete
upgrade of the dive pool and improved gym facilities.
Mr Barnett told reporters he was old enough to remember when Beatty Park was the site of the "golden
days of Australian swimming with Dawn Fraser and Murray Rose winning gold medal after gold medal".
The premier said as well as the $5 million upfront payment, the government would spend $25,000 a year
to lease the site of nib stadium.

Quiet week

RESERVES SOCCER
WITH their top four hopes all-but
dashed, Busselton's reserves will
spend their closing games of the season "enjoying the game".
Six points off fourth placed Bunbury Dynamos with nine goals less on
the tally, the reserves have little
chance of achieving their season aim
of finishing in the top four.
Club president Bryan Caddick said
the final weeks of the season would be
spent improving tactics such as
shooting and getting experience in
the league.
"They're just going to be enjoying
the game," Caddick said.
The team had a horror game last
week, losing 4-1 against Bunbury
United and with Will Wilson leaving
the game concussed after receiving an
elbow to his head.
Caddick said he was encouraged to
see the team continue to put in the
effort despite coming up against
some experienced players.
"The young kids played their heart
out and that's all we can ask from
them," he said.
The team will play Dynamos at
home on Sunday.

AS the Premier League reaches its

could be the defining moment in local
women's football.
Farrell has at her disposal the Stand-
-
together with regular goalscorers
Steph Whild, Sarah Yates, Megan
Davey and Jess Downie backed by talented young goalkeeper Amy Szeliga.
Answering that call will be Estelle
Dragstra, Sami Noakes, Jodi Horner,
Laoise NiThauna, Sharon Seia and
Therese Fletcher. BusseIton and
Dynamos boast identical results to
date and in fact the only time they met
they fought out a furious 3-all draw in
their last league encounter.
Dynamos do have the bragging right, however by knocking them out of
the Pioneer and Legends Cup but even
that game went into extra time, and it is
difficult to see what will be the decid-
averaging just under 10 goals a game,
where Busse1ton themselves have conceded only 10 and scored 132 in 14 ga-
mes averaging around 9.5 goals per
game.
Statistics are shared all over the park
and all eyes will be eagerly watching
the players who can withstand the
pressure and lead their team to not only
victory, but possibly the Holy Grail, in
the title of Premier League League
champions.
