SPRING YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT CONFERENCE
More than 1600 students from approximately 150 Michigan schools attended
the 65th Annual Michigan Youth in Government (MYIG) State Leadership
Conference in Lansing March 13 - 17. Of these students, one from the Upper
Peninsula was chosen to run for Governor against three students from the
Lower Peninsula. The student selected from the U.P. was Devin Jensen, a
Junior here at Big Bay de Noc School. Although he was not elected Governor, this was a great learning experience for him and the other seven Big Bay
de Noc students who participated in the conference under the direction of
Kelly Kurpier. The other students attending were Seniors Brianna Johnson
and Levi Tatrow; Juniors Kristen Pyke and Libby Thill; Freshmen Matt
Ranguette, Kelsi Stapleton, Kaela Clark and Paige Vietzke from Rapid River.
These students wrote bills and participated in the process of making their bills
“law.” For five days they had the same “jobs” as our “real” senators and representatives. They experienced firsthand what it is like to be in government.
These students were allowed to occupy the seats of our senators and representatives in our state capitol building. What an incredible educational opportunity it was for our students.
The students would like to thank the community for the financial support provided in helping them earn the money necessary to make this trip down to
Lansing!

PTO NEWS
The elementary students would like to
extend a big thank-you to the PTO for
the new Black Bear shirts that were
given to them (pictured above). Every
student in grades PreK-6th was given a
new Black Bear shirt to show their school spirit! In addition, the PTO purchased many new materials for every
classroom as well as paid the cost of field trips for this
school year. The PTO will once again be sponsoring the
end-of-year picnic day for the entire elementary. The
PTO extends its thanks to the community for its support
in making these “extras” happen for our kids! We could
not do it without you!
Penelope Penguin inside their milk-carton igloo. The kindergarten would like to thank the families and organizations who saved milk jugs to help build their igloo. Just
before spring break the igloo “melted” away for another
year.
Mrs. Gollakner's Second Grade Class celebrated Valentine's Day with a Mock Beach Party. The limbo
rock proved to be the highlight with Derek Denkins winning
first place in the competition.
Mrs. Kuehl's 3rd Grade
Class recently had a visit from Deb
Gierke (pictured at right) of the MSU
Extension office. She talked to the students about reducing, reusing, and recycling their garbage. The students were
surprised to hear that each person produces about 4 1/2 pounds of garbage
each day. As an activity, the 3rd graders made extra-terrestrial creatures from
garbage. They enjoyed this activity
greatly. Thank you to Deb Gierke for
visiting our classroom!

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT’S DESK
* Yes it is April even though it feels like February. We have
had a number of days off this year due to inclement weather
including April 12 which is one of the latest days I can ever
remember. We will need to adjust the school calendar at the
end of the year and will keep you informed when we do.
* The Board of Education is working with the Playground
Committee to develop a new area of the playground this summer. If you are interested in volunteering to help the committee, please contact the school.
* I would like to thank the Garden Economic Task Force for
their continued support with the development of the Career
Awareness program at the school. Each year this program increases student involvement and understanding of careers. We
look forward to expanding the program even more in the future.
* Over the next couple of months the Board will be working
on the budget for next year. At this time it is believed that
school funding will be “static” this year with no major changes
to per pupil funding. If this holds true, there will be no significant cuts or additions to next year’s financial plan.
- Supt. William J. Pistulka
