He refused to go to Rome because it had become too dangerous, gangs ruled the city. The Church was suffering because the Pope was in France, under the thumb of the King of France. St. Catherine wrote a letter to the Pope. She told him to “be a man; go back to Rome.” In other words, have guts, courage, to do what you know Jesus wants you to do. Eventually the Pope did return to Rome. This story is a great reminder to each one of us. To follow Jesus and to be a part of his family requires courage and good old fashioned guts. To stand for the Gospel and the morality of Jesus is to stand against the current in today’s society. No wimps or as a marine drill instructor would acidly comment “no gutless wonders are allowed.” To truly follow Jesus and live the Gospel is to take a road that will be tough at times, and easy to just give up. But if we persevere and “gut it out” then we will come to know Jesus in a way that we can only imagine right now. I am amazed at the number of people in the parish who probably wouldn’t say they are courageous but are examples of toughness and perseverance in faith that are inspirational! To be courageous in faith means changing relationships, if needed even ending some friendships if they lead us away from Jesus. (A true friend helps us to be better people, not worse!) It means having the guts to forgive others and ask for forgiveness from those we hurt, and going to confession. It means not having your own way all the time, but serving others. It means not always being right, that others might have been inspired by God to the truth you don’t know. It means letting go of measuring yourself by how much you make, or how many things you have, or what brand names you wear, or even what you use your money for. How would Jesus want you to spend your money? It means saying no to actions and habits that contradict what the Church teaches. It means being accountable to Jesus rather than to your own comfort. In the Gospel Jesus knew exactly what was to happen in Jerusalem and it was going to be painful, and Peter didn’t want him to be hurt. Yet in this case, as the exercise people are fond of saying, “no pain, no gain.” (Which isn’t exactly true!) We gained redemption and the gates of heaven were opened to us. But we have to walk the path to those gates, and that path can be rough at times. Fortunately Jesus walks with us and lends His strength to us. “Have courage, I have overcome the world!” (John 16:33) Let us have the courage to follow him each day of our lives! First Reading — The name of the Lord has become like fire burning in Jeremiah’s heart (Jeremiah 20: 7-9). Psalm — My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God (Psalm 63). Second Reading — Be transformed; renew your mind; discern what is good (Romans 12:1-2). Gospel — Those who lose their lives for Jesus’ sake will find them (Matthew 16:21-27). OFFICES CLOSED The Parish, all Ministry and Religious Education offices will be CLOSED on Monday, September 1st in observance of Labor Day. There will be only one daily mass celebrated at 8:30 a.m. We wish all parishioners a happy & safe holiday! ALTAR SERVER TRAINING As Christ invited his Apostles to go and prepare the upper room for the last supper that initiated the Easter Passover, you too can participate in this ancient sacred mystery, as Sacred Heart Church is inviting all students, who have made their First Communion, to be trained as Altar Servers to assist our priests at our weekend Mass celebrations. Training begins on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday of September 8, 9, and 11, from 3:45 PM 5:00PM in the church. Please pick up an application in the parish directory, Sacred Heart School office or Religious Education office. Any questions please contact: Sandie Dominguez at 805- 525-0010. ALTAR S E R V E R The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ ATTENTION ALL PARISHIONERS If you are interested in becoming a Eucharistic Minister a training will be held on Saturday, September 13th from 9am to 11:30am. Please contact Tom Chess, 805-200-8939. August 31, 2014 Page 3 Youth Ministry News From Fr. Bill “It was life-changing!” I hear that phrase applied to a weekend or conference which releases an emotional high and fades within a day or two. Life changing? It seems more like a fever or a flu bug. Changing schools is life changing: new teachers, different people and opportunities for a fresh start. Making a team is life changing: practices, games and competitions become a major black-hole of our days challenging us to get homework and studies done quickly and well… pushing family time, social time and work time around like a bully running our life. For those with family and friends off to college, whether those we love are going to Sacramento State, Chico State or the University of Idaho... there is a tearing (my cheeks are stained) and tearing (my heart is missing a piece). Things will be different as they have graduated to a whole new world... which won't all be magic carpet rides and may include lions and tigers and hornets! Oh, my! This is life-changing. The church believes that sacraments are meant to be life-changing: Baptism, formally being brought into God’s family along with the responsibilities and commitment involved in being family; Eucharist, personally committing to receive and strive to be His Body; Reconciliation, asking for, receiving the grace I need to be the person He is calling me to be; Confirmation? When I was confirmed it was emphasized that we are soldiers for Christ. Adversity and persecution are to be expected. Being His means that we know “the world’ has a different agenda… of which “salvation” is not a part. We challenge our young people to be the church today. As the Body of Christ they share their gifts to build up the church now. The gifts they have been given they know they are called to use to uplift others. We strive to make being church and praying as church integral to their lives and relationships. In essence… Life Changing. Some parents tell me that we expect too much of young people. “My child goes to Catholic School. Why does she need to go to church to be confirmed?” “She’s in cheer and needs the time for her studies.” “Our weekends are too busy, why do you require them to attend mass?” “You’re making us change…” When something is important we do everything possible to make it happen. Catholics know that being confirmed is not just an excuse for a party and a warm feeling that will pass. Being confirmed is meant to be life-changing… both for the individual and those they meet. FYI: Confirmation program registration forms are available both online and the rectory... and if you like waiting for the last minute, this is it. WORDS OF WISDOM… “Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy?” ~ Isaiah 55:2 August 31, 2014 Page 5 MISA DEL MEDIODIA, 12 P.M.
