ELKHART.ORG | LEADING BUSINESS 3 Automotive industry planted deep definitely talking about Elkhart County. We don’t manufacture cars any more, though you can still see models of the Elcar in private collections. But we are still a key part of the industry. When I was a youngster growing up in Beech Grove, the month of May was all about the Indy 500. (For those that aren’t aware, Beech Grove is a small town completely surrounded by Indianapolis.) Mondays at school were spent comparing sun burns collected during visits to the track. We all had favorite drivers. The AJ Foyt fans would argue with the Mario Andretti fans about who was better. I was a Rick Mears fan. Then on race day everybody who didn’t have tickets would listen to the radio, because it was not (and still is not) broadcast live on local TV. So every May I think about motorsports. Why does that matter to us in Elkhart County? Motorsports were created as a means of automobile testing. The quest for speed, handling and safety lead to innovations in the cars we drive every day. In this issue of Leading Business you will read about some of our members who help make your driving experience better. We have companies that design parts of your accelerator, the steering knuckle and more. We have a company that makes sure your mechanic has all the necessary fluids for your car. Unfortunately, we don’t have room to list all the dealers and aftermarket products - right here in Elkhart County. The automotive industry is enormous in the United States. Cars and trucks are a major part of the American lifestyle. Elkhart County companies are involved in nearly every part of the cars you drive. We don’t have a world-renowned motorsports event. Other than the Osceola drag strip and the New Paris Speedway, we don’t live and breathe racing. But we do have world-renowned innovation in the automotive industry. We can be proud of that in May and every month. Did you know the rear-view mirror and the seat belt were created by racing teams at the Indy 500? A recent article from Popular Mechanics magazine details the innovations that were started at the Indy 500. Front wheel drive, turbochargers, tire technology and more. Most of them, you take for granted today. A Gaska Tape employee won a $35,000 Chevy Equinox at a special employee appreciation day. Internal public relations can be just as vital as anything a company may do externally. This includes regular communications that can help employees connect with the company and its brand message. It can also simply be rewarding employees with a great party. Gaska Tape Inc. of Elkhart has done well in recent years and it hasn’t been shy about sharing its bounty with employees in terms of bonuses and, in the last two years, even giving away a vehicle in an employee drawing. But recently, Gaska Tape wanted to do something special. So, with the help of local marketing and public relations firm TaigMarks Inc., it planned a game show style event on March 5 emceed by TaigMarks personnel that presented employees with a stand of 50 cubbyhole cabinets, each with a prize behind the door. With all company personnel gathered to watch, employees with five years or more seniority were selected at random to go up and pick a door to open, from which they retrieved prizes that included cash, gift cards and additional company-wide contributions to the employees’ retirement fund and bonuses. And … behind five of the doors were car keys, one of which belonged to a 2015 Chevy Equinox worth $35,000 that had been on display in the plant for the past two weeks. thought I’d win. The only thing I’ve won before is a little lottery money.” “Gaska Tape has been a good place to work, good for my family,” he said. “After a house, a car is the biggest expense most people will have,” said Jack Boyd Smith Jr., president and owner of Gaska Tape. “It’s a heck of an incentive. You might not win the lottery, but you might win a $35,000 vehicle.” The whole event was designed as a surprise to the employees, on a scale that Gaska Tape had not done before. “We wanted to bring some excitement to it, to make it truly a fun time both to watch and to participate in,” said Smith. This year marks Gaska Tape’s 50th anniversary as a company, and dedicated employees are a big reason for its ongoing success. “Employee loyalty means a lot to us,” Smith explained. “We’ve done well in recent years and, of course, our employees are a big part of that. There have been times when they’ve had to step up to help us through difficulties and they’ve done that. And we appreciate that. And that’s what this day is all about.” Gaska Tape manufactures a wide variety of customized specialty foam and tape products. It has a 300,000-sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Elkhart and is internationally recognized for innovative product development technology and production processes in the foam and adhesive industry. Whoa, now that’s a prize! So as more doors were opened, the crowd’s anticipation grew. Those who found keys were ushered over to a special seating area and the mystery deepened until all the doors were opened. Then each of the key holders went up to try and start the vehicle. First one … nope. Then the next … nope. Then the third … nope! Then the fourth … nope again! A big cheer rose from the audience as key holder number five, 13-year Gaska veteran Patrick R. Kling, got up. It had to be him! And yep, he got in and it started right up! “This was a terrific public relations event where the company went above and beyond to make it very enjoyable as well as very rewarding for its employees,” said TaigMarks Vice President and Creative Director David Marks, one of the emcees. “It showed the employees how much the company cared, and how much it wants to be a place where employees can both do good work and have a good time.” “I was shocked. Stunned,” said Kling, who had been continually walking by the vehicle that had been on display in the plant for last two weeks. “I’ve been thinking that’s my car, but I never Gaska Tape president and owner Jack Boyd Smith Jr. (right) stands next to the man with the winning key to a $35,000 Chevy Equinox, Patrick R. Kling of Elkhart, a 13-year veteran of Gaska Tape. The big giveaway capped off a festive afternoon of fun and prizes for Gaska Tape employees in March. ELKHART.ORG | LEADING BUSINESS 7 Band instruments and recreational vehicles. Those industries have been at the core of the greater Elkhart area economy and its communities for several decades. For more than a generation, the automotive market has also been a significant element in the local economy. During the 1970s, Elkhart’s own CTS (originally known as Chicago Telephone Supply Company) recognized an opportunity in the automotive industry. For nearly 70 years, the business was immersed in the communications market. Four decades ago, concerns over environmental pollution led to U.S. Government mandated automotive emissions control requirements. Electronic sensors were developed to fill the need to monitor throttle position and exhaust gas recirculation controls. And CTS dove into the custom automotive sensor business, opening new market opportunities for the company. Since then, CTS has served the automotive market with position sensors for applications such as throttle control, exhaust gas recirculation systems, intake valves and turbocharger position sensors. The company produces rotary actuators for tuned manifolds and other engine systems controls, and a broad line of electronic accelerator pedal modules for light-duty and commercial vehicle manufacturers worldwide. Recently, the Beardsley Avenue based CTS expanded into the commercial vehicle, off-road and heavy equipment markets. The company developed and introduced a robust “Smart Actuator,” designed for fuel delivery management, control of variable vane turbochargers which is suitable for a variety of other large diesel engine management functions. Additionally, CTS Automotive Products supplies position sensors to the small engine market that includes motorcycles, ATVs, outboard engines and more. www.ctscorp.com Among the Chamber’s other members in the automotive industry are: Chassix, in Bristol, was formed through the integration of Diversified Machine and SMW Automotive and produces several parts for the auto industry, including, brackets, control arms which are links between a vehicle’s chassis and suspension, cross members that assist in proper vehicle handling, knuckles - where wheel meets suspension meets steering. Engineering, designing specialty parts, testing and validating are all among the services offered by Chassix. www.chassix.com Tenneco Inc. is one of the world’s leading designers, manufacturers and distributors of clean air and ride performance products and systems for the automotive, commercial truck and off-highway markets and the aftermarket. It employs nearly 29,000 employees around the world with its headquarters in Ligonier and a key plant in Elkhart near County Road 17. Tenneco has more than 90 manufacturing facilities on six continents and 15 engineering centers around the world. Tenneco produces parts for passenger cars, light trucks, off-road vehicles and several other industries. www.tenneco.com GDC serves a wide range of industries, growing globally from its modest beginnings in 1955 die cutting parts for the automotive industry. The company supplies over 20 million parts annually to companies like Ford, Toyota, GM, Trane and more, including air and water deflectors, gimp, duct and foam seals, gaskets and adhesives, engine cover foam, fuel tank isolators, filters and diaphragms and dozens of other products. www.gdc-corp.com CMI Enterprises has been in the auto industry for over 25 with locations in Miami, Florida, and a second state of the art manufacturing plant in Elkhart. The company’s distribution facilities in Arlington, Texas, and Los Angeles, California, are strategically positioned to serve customers across the nation in a timely manner, supplying aftermarket headliners, upholstery, a wide selection of genuine durable leathers, poly-urethanes, faux suede, vinyl, fabrics and sidewall materials. CMI also serves several other industries. www.cmi-enterprises.com Kem Krest Corporation started in 1979 managing the General Motors chemical line. Over the years, its customer base has grown, expanding beyond the automotive industry to include the agriculture and industrial and defense industries. It now also serves Ford, Honda, Nissan, and Hyundai. Recently, the company founded Kem Krest Defense which works with the Department of Defense and its prime suppliers. The company does $150 million in revenue annually, growing with double digits every year. Amish Shah and David Weaver bought the company in 2009 and developed a creative and strategic board of directors with an entirely different strategy. At a time when Elkhart County was bottoming out during the recession, Kem Krest leaders looked at the possibility of relocating the operation across the country. Communities in Tennessee, Michigan, Illinois and Ohio offered millions in immediate tax breaks. Shah says the dollars that dangled were very tempting for a new venture with a promising future. “But we couldn’t leave,” Shah says. “In the long run, we knew it was a better investment to stay in Elkhart.” Shah and Weaver reached beyond their GM base and landed additional clients. “The more (business) we grab, we can offer better service and a low cost – more volume and scale,” says Shah, who also is one of six on the GM Supplier Council – and is the only one not from Detroit. He says businesses in the auto industry can be even more optimistic. “It’s at the best point in years. Manufacturers are making the best product, great quality and the average age of a car on the road is 11 years, now,” he says. “This is the new auto industry.” www.kemkrest.com Below Kem Krest distribution warehouse in Elkhart ELKHART.ORG | LEADING BUSINESS 9 Aluminum Metals Company, 640 Collins Rd, hosted a ribbon cutting and open house recently as a business re-launch. In the April issue of Leading Business, we focused on ADEC, Goodwill Industries, and Junior Achievement – how these organizations impact the greater Elkhart area by providing services to local manufacturers and training for the adult workforce, an injection of cash into the local economy, and financial literacy guidance for our youth to prepare them for real-world finances. These barely scratch the surface of how nonprofit organizations in the area make such significant and positive impacts. Darren Bickel, Vice President, Community Impact of United Way of Elkhart County, notes that there are so many other organizations that they could not be sufficiently explored in one, two – or even several articles. However, it does seem important to include a follow-up to mention just three more. These are all 12 GREATER ELKHART CHAMBER organizations supported by United Way. LaCasa, Inc. (www.lacasainc.net) is a nonprofit housing agency based in Goshen, with programs to help clients achieve financial stability, find a new home, prevent foreclosure, and find affordable rentals, get home repair assistance, immigration counseling, and neighborhood engagement. Livability in a community adds to the growth of a workforce. LaCasa helps by coordinating with the local government in finding the right neighborhoods to build new affordable housing and assisting in the establishment of neighborhood organizations. Church Community Services (www.churchcommunityservices.org), Elkhart, assists people “wrestle through issues that may have caused them to get tangled up in tough situations,” says Bickel of one program in particular, Men Alive. Men Alive is an empowerment program for men, teaching job and life skills through a strong, supportive environment. It challenges and equips men to overcome difficult life circumstances, moving them to a place of health and strength spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. Also, Habitat for Humanity of Elkhart County (www.habitatec.com) builds houses in partnership with qualifying partner families and sells the houses at no profit with zero percent interest mortgages to those families. The program also prepares partner families to become successful Habitat homeowners. “The kids stop getting bounced from school systems because their family keeps having to move,” tells Bickel. “Habitat helps families make real changes and not just put out a fire.” MAY ANNIVERSARIES 50 YEARS OR MORE Nautic Global Group, Inc. 25 YEARS OR MORE Prairie Street Family Dentistry, Inc.
