In a congregaon our size, small groups are the primary way for people to connect
with others while pursuing spiritual transformaon in their lives. Small groups are
a way of building an interconnected community, one in which we foster opportunies to sojourn together. When we nurture intenonal relaonships with one
another, we embody a relaonal God – a God made known in the life and ministry
of Jesus, who reminds us that wherever we gather in small numbers, the Christ
Presence is with us.
There are three main types of Small Groups at First Congregaonal Church: Spiritual Growth & Development Groups, Fellowship Groups and Mission & Social
Acon Groups. While some groups emphasize one value over another, each small
group embodies four important values: Inving, Growing, Connecng and Serving.
SG
D!"!#!$G%
Spirituality groups are primarily interested in growing spiritually through study,
discussion, spiritual pracces, prayer and worship. While spirituality groups emphasize growing, they are also intenonal about inving others to join the group,
connecng with one another to build community, and serving others through
outreach.
F!%G%
Fellowship groups are primarily
interested in connecng with others, providing opportunies for
friendship and community building.
But fellowship groups are not
merely social clubs: they are also
groups that offer opportunies to
grow spiritually through prayer or
theological reflecon, inving others to join the group, and serving
others through service projects.

Mission groups are primarily interested in serving others in the community or in
the world. What differenates mission groups from other philanthropic organizaons is the theological commitments that invite us to serve, which means mission
groups are also interested in growing spiritually. Through acts of service, mission
groups also provide opportunies for inving and connecng with others.
O!G%
In addion to these three primary groups, we also offer many other group opportunies (i.e. Youth Groups, Music Groups, professionally led groups). Regardless
of the group’s focus, each strives to incorporate all four components: Inving,
Growing, Connecng and Serving.
We hope the small group experiences will
help us to discover and enrich our faith, to
discern and use our gi<s, and to build community within our congregaon. Look
through the many offerings, find something
of interest to you, and get involved. Sign
up at the Small Groups Fair on Sunday,
September 29 following both services, or
call/email the facilitator listed.
If you have an idea for a future small group, or are interested in leading a group,
contact Judy Schilling, our Small Groups Coordinator, at 303-652-2944 or judithaschilling@gmail.com. You may also contact Jason Hays, Associate Minister
for Pastoral Care & Congregaonal Life, at 303-442-1787 x102 or jason@

Racism is an issue that affects all of us and our kids, as it connues to shape aOtudes and culture. A<er the George Zimmerman verdict, many of us in Boulder
asked, "What can I do about racism?" This group will meet to raise our awareness
about racism and to reflect on what we can do to deal with racism. For this round
of small groups we will read The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. This book
may be purchased inexpensively from most on-line sites. We will meet for 10
weeks (excluding Thanksgiving week). We will spend me examining the book,
racism in our lives, and where we go from here.

This series of eight sessions for adults and young people will work for appreciaon of the genius of Jesus' teaching method and content, familiarity with a dozen
or so parables and insight into their meaning for Jesus' me and our own. Expect
to sing a bit, to lay parables beside phrases in the Lord's Prayer to amplify both,
find ourselves in the dozens of characters in the parables and perhaps even write
an original one for twenty-first century Colorado. Selected readings will be provided. Janet is a rered director of Chrisan educaon at another UCC church.

The CROP WALK is really a large group, and everyone at our church can be a
member. This group only meets one me. Last year Boulder County Crop walk
raised $40,000. Our church produced more than any other parcipang church
by collecng $5,689 to feed struggling families locally and worldwide. Across the

an esmated 10 million people every year. A child dies of hunger every five seconds. Community Food Share received $9,600 from last year’s walk, which provided 38,400 meals locally. Church World Service received $30,000 to help provide clean water wells, seeds and tools, nutrion packets and emergency food
supplies around the globe. Everyone can parcipate in this year’s Crop Walk in
one of three ways -- by walking, volunteering to register walkers, or supporng
