I
have a good friend who spends the last few
hours of her children’s birthdays filling out
another page in their Birthday Book. All of
the requisite fields are painstakingly filled in,
including their new height, weight, teeth (or
lack thereof ), and special interests they may have
adopted over the previous year. While I love
this idea, I’ve also found, more often than not,
that activities, teeth and height do not always
reflect some of the biggest growth stages of my
own children’s lives. In fact, if I had to select
some of their most defining moments, I don’t
think there would be an appropriate field for
them in a Birthday Book; they would have to be
something entirely their own, something that
defied definition.
As the mother of three (ages 22, 11 and 8),
I have found myself taken aback more than
once by my children’s sudden – and sometimes
awe-inspiring – flashes of maturity. And while
I consider myself a hands-on type of mother
who has always been engaged in my kids’ daily
routines and personalities, these glimpses have
caught me completely off guard. For example,
in the middle of her sixth grade year, for no

discernible reason whatsoever, my oldest
daughter decided to start wearing skirts over
her jeans. She had a collection of them, all a
few inches above the knee, some pleated, others
denim, which she had previously worn with
tights or ankle socks. Now her skirts became
an entirely different facet of her wardrobe, an
extension worn not only for the sake of altering
her physical appearance, but also to make a
statement. Although I am still unsure what
her statement was, exactly, the fact that she
had decided it was time to make one marked a
turning point in her pre-teen years. Until this
point, my daughter had always followed the
rules, colored inside the lines, and had never
done anything to draw attention to herself.
And yet suddenly things had changed. I like to
think this was the point in her life when she
realized that her life was bigger than she was;
that the edges of it expanded, and with it, her
vision and confidence.
Or at least that’s what I told myself. How else
to explain the sudden flashes of stubbornness I
saw within her that year when she would come
home after school to tell me the other girls had
made fun of her new wardrobe? One girl even
shouted across the gym that she looked like
“a dork who had gotten dressed in the dark.”
And where, in the face of such middle-school
cruelty, had she found the courage to absorb
their words – and then continue doing exactly
what she was doing, all the way until the end
of that year when she decided finally that her
funky ensemble had worn itself out? If her
wardrobe adjustment alerted me to a particular
phase of growth in my daughter’s life, her
persistence throughout the second half of that
phase made me acutely aware of something
else: that she had reached a milestone that not
only had I not seen coming, but didn’t even
know she was capable of reaching.
My youngest child’s growth strides, while
uniquely his, have been just as poignant.
He is a curious little boy who spends hours
in the backyard digging for dinosaur fossils
and thinks that Emma Stone (who plays
Spiderman’s girlfriend) is the bomb. He’s also
shy, and has always found it difficult to assert
himself in public. A natural ham at home – (it
is not unusual to hear him in his older sister’s
room, belting out the lyrics to Katie Perry’s
“Fireworks,”) he becomes a different person
around people he doesn’t know, ducking his
head, hiding behind my legs, even racing in
the opposite direction to avoid the oncoming
conversation. And yet, just the other day as my
husband pulled him forward to introduce him
to an old friend, I watched, speechless, as my

little guy took a step, grasped the older man’s
outstretched hand, and without breaking eye
contact said, “Hi, how are you?”
Where, I asked my husband at least four times
on the way home, had he learned to do such
a thing? Who had taught him? My husband
smiled, catching our boy’s knowing gaze in the
rear view mirror. “No one taught him,” he said.
“He’s just growing up.”
And then there was the incident with my 11year old, a girl who has no qualms tackling her
little brother for the last cupcake after dinner,
but who has also, despite my husband’s and
my constant assurances, spent the last eight
years fanatically preoccupied with his safety
and whereabouts. At one point, her fretting
got so bad that she stopped doing things with
friends just so she could stay home and “make
sure he was okay.” We took her to a therapist
to help her learn to manage her anxiety, created
charts that dictated just how much time she
was allowed to “worry” about him, and tried to
convince her that we were, in fact, taking very
good care of her little brother. Nothing seemed
to be working.
And then, a few months ago, as I was helping
her clean her room, I saw a little piece of
paper taped alongside her Taylor Swift and
New Direction posters. There, in her own
handwriting, she had copied down this
quote: “Worrying is like a rocking chair. It
gives you something to do, but it doesn’t get
you anywhere.” She caught me looking at
it and smiled shyly when I told her that I

loved it. “And it’s true,” she said, blue eyes
widening. “It’s really, really true.” I’m not sure
if the moment was perfect because she had
discovered something so enormous on her
own, or because I was there to share it with her.
Maybe both.
I’ve already lived through some of the bigger
landmarks of childhood with my oldest
including a first sleepover, a first love, a first
job, even a first (and last) driving lesson – and
I will go through them a second and then a
third time. But while all of these milestones,
just like the ones in the Birthday Book, are also
obvious indicators of my children’s maturity,
I will continue to put more weight on the
not-so-obvious ones. Because there is nothing
small about finally understanding the power
of confidence or the uselessness of fretting.
There is everything to learn from the sudden
awareness of self and the innate courage to
keep it alive.
And every day, as they continue to grow, they
teach me.
Although a seasoned mom to a 22-year-old,
Cecilia Galante lives ‘firsts’ everyday as her two
younger children continue to mature and amaze
her. When not busy treasuring her children’s
personal milestones, Cecilia squeezes in time
teaching 8th grade English at Wyoming Seminary
Lower School and is on the faculty of Wilkes
University’s MFA Creative Writing Program. The
author of eight young adult and middle grade
novels, Cecilia will be releasing her first adult
novel with Harper Collins this August.
