Wyoming Valley Montessori School 851 West Market St. • Kingston We are the Only Accredited Montessori School in NEPA by the American Montessori Society July/August 2014 Walking the tightrope of motherhood and career by Caroline Munley I ntegrating your professional and home life can be very challenging when returning to work with a newborn. Being an expert juggler is just one of the many skills we need as working mothers trying to strike a work-life balance. I recently returned to my family business, Munley Law, after giving birth to my daughter Lydia. It was just as difficult to return to work this time as it was 7 years ago when returning to work after the birth of my now 7-yearold daughter, Bernie. R eturning to the workforce after having a baby is a tough decision that more mothers than ever are facing. According to United States Department of Labor statistics 2012, 75.1% of mothers with children between the ages of 6-17 and 64.8% of mothers with children under the age of 6 were working. A recent report by the Pew Foundation reveals that not only are the numbers for working mothers up, but mothers are now the sole or primary income providers in a record 40% of households with children. Every woman’s circumstances are different, but most mothers returning to work are doing so out of financial necessity. Rather than dwelling on the fact that we are not always home with our children, we should instead focus on how our positions at work can provide benefits for our families. I come from a very hard working family, and although my parents and siblings were very supportive of my growing family, they were also very eager to have me back at work. While in the hospital after the birth of Lydia, my mom visited and quickly asked when I would be coming back to work. I was exhausted, but her question made me laugh. Whether your maternity leave is for a few weeks, a few months or even a year, returning to work is an adjustment, and you need to be prepared for bumps in the road. The biggest With Lydia, and with needing after school care for Bernie, I felt that a full-time babysitter would work better for our family this time. My husband works many hours as an airline pilot, and we really rely on help from our babysitter, as well as family and friends. Through the referrals of friends again, I was lucky to find a very experienced sitter who fit right in with my family. I quickly realized that everything is not going to go quite as expected and to be prepared to adjust and roll with the punches. obstacle for me was overcoming the guilt of leaving a newborn at home. Finding quality childcare has made returning to work a much less stressful time and has helped to alleviate some of the guilt. When I returned after having Bernie, I took her to a daycare center that had been recommended by some friends and by my sister, Marion. Entrusting your child to a stranger is very difficult, but if someone you know can recommend a daycare or sitter that they’ve used and trust, it can help ease your mind. One thing that helped with my transition back to work was the fact that I stayed connected via email and phone to the office while I was on leave. While this approach may not be possible or appealing to many women, it helped to make my return to work much easier. Even with all of the advance planning, my first week back was a disaster. After taking some time off to help with the baby, my husband returned to work the same week as I. As luck would have it, my daughter, Bernie, became sick with a stomach bug. The following day, the baby shared the same bug. After only three days back at work I naturally became sick… and then the babysitter got sick. It was quite the week – a real baptism by fire. I quickly realized that everything is not going to go quite as expected and to be prepared to adjust and roll with the punches. Having an understanding workplace and a good support network really helps. continued on page 8 NEPA Family Magazine July/August 2014 7 2014-15 SCHOOL YEAR Now enrolling grades K-3. Make a daily to do list and stick with it. Identify what really needs to get done, what can wait, and what you can skip entirely. Take Care of Yourself – Remember that your wellbeing is important. Even if it’s only an hour a few times a week to relax in the tub, go to the gym, unwind with a book, spend time with your husband or visit with friends. Be sure to get plenty of rest as well. Find Quality Childcare – Ask for recommendations from friends and family, start looking early in your pregnancy, visit the center or meet with potential babysitters, ask questions, get references and stay involved. Healthychildren.org has some great tips on choosing childcare. See healthychildren.org/English/family-life/work-play/pages/ Choosing-a-Childcare-Center.aspx. Prepare a Support Team – family, friends, coworkers. Motherhood is full of joy regardless as to if – or when – you return to the workforce. All mothers have the power to make positive influences on their children. My mother always worked and was a great role model for us. I think it’s important for children to see their mother as someone they want to emulate and my mother was that for me. Some conflict between work and family life is inevitable, but keeping things in perspective and remembering that your children come first helps to ensure a successful return to work. You will soon find that everything will naturally fall into place. Huntzinger’s Karate Caroline Munley is a partner with Munley Law in Scranton.
