Due to the terrain, a change in alignment of over 30° was required near the
midpoint of fence IV. Usually, this is done using intermediate retaining ropes.
However, as the ground falls away almost vertically down to the Weisseritz river
where it meets the fence, a standard solution was not an option. The solution was
to use a strut. What made this situation unique was the height (5m) and absorption
energy (1,500kJ) of the fence. The strut length had to be modified due to the
characteristics of the terrain so as not to prevent the fence from functioning
properly (dynamic system). In addition, the posts had to be flown in by helicopter
as the construction site was difficult to access.
