Romantic Germany Enjoy romantic moments in the region between Rhine and Moselle 2009 Germany as you' ve never seen it before! It's hard to believe that 200 castles and palaces, six wine regions, charming medieval towns and a landscape of breathtaking natural beauty are just a two-hour flight away in the Moselle and Rhine regions. 4 Culture ded hotels, Inside: recommen tions events and attrac Wine 6 Nature The Ahr valley 2 8 www.romantic-germany.info 3 Culture Imperial Thermal Baths, Trier Celts & medieval knights Eltz Castle, Moselle 4 Romantic Rhine The history of Rhineland-Palatinate is rich in variety, and in most places goes back to Roman times. The Romans The oldest town in Germany is found on the Moselle in Rhineland-Palatinate. Trier was the largest Roman settlement north of the Alps and was once known as the second Rome. Ancient thermal baths, an amphitheatre and the Porta Nigra gate stand as reminders of a bygone age. The Romans also left their mark in Mainz. The cathedral city on the Rhine is home to numerous ruins and finds and was also where Johannes Gutenberg invented the movabletype printing press. Wine It was not only monumental architecture that the Romans brought to Rhineland-Palatinate, but also wine. They first planted grapes in the region some 2,000 years ago, Rhine in Flames Don't miss the Rhine in Flames firework spectacular, held every year in August. Around 80 boats glide down the Rhine in the longest such procession in Europe. One of five similar events taking place in the region. www.rhein-in-flammen.com Palatia Jazz Festival Choose from a host of concerts held in castles around the region from May to August 2009. Event Highlights Romans, Knight's Tournament, Rheinfels castle This is just a small selection of our events. More information: www.romantic-germany.info and vineyards have dominated the countryside ever since. No trip to the six wine regions is complete without attending a tasting session or visiting one of the legendary wine festivals. Castles Around 200 castles, palaces and other historical buildings, most of which sit in splendour overlooking the Rhine and Moselle rivers, form a large part of the region's cultural heritage. The guided tour at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is espe- cially enthralling, while Marksburg Castle stands out because it has never been destroyed. History brought to life for all ages. Festivals There are few more spectacular occasions than a castle festival featuring knights, travelling entertainers and medieval music. Before, after or even during the show, you can enjoy the enchanting river valleys, the picturesque vineyards and some wonderful food and drink. www.romantic-germany.info 5 things in life, the whole year round Regional wine festival 6 Rhineland-Palatinate, which encompasses six of Germany's 13 wine regions, is a paradise for wine lovers. More than 70 per cent of German wine originates from Rhineland-Palatinate. For us, wine is a pleasure you can indulge in all year round. Spring Wine is something you can enjoy even in spring in Rhineland-Palatinate, when the almond trees blossom into flower. But it is not only grapes that thrive here. Lemons and kiwi fruits also flourish in the mild, almost mediterranean climate that warms the largest riesling-growing area in the world. Summer Visit us in summer and you might just discover a new favourite wine. And where better to do so than at a tasting session held in a vineyard? Most of these take place in old vaulted cellars, accompanied by a small buffet of local specialities. Because many wineries have accommodation on-site, you can even extend your stay. After a good night's rest, the vintner may well take you up into the vineyard or down to the wine cellar. One of the many friendly encounters to look forward to in RhinelandPalatinate. Autumn Autumn is the season of the wine festival, a tradition that is celebrated in almost every town Vineyards near Mayschoss in the Ahr valley Wine festivals Enjoy a warm welcome and great entertainment to boot at a host of delightful wine festivals. Moselle Wine Festival Germany’s oldest wine festival in Winningen on the sunny Lower Moselle. Wonderful experience, great atmosphere: 28 August to 26 September 2009. Historical Wine Festival in Heimersheim Costumed characters, craft stalls and talented performers serve up an authentic medieval experience on gaily decorated streets, bringing history to life: 14 to 16 August 2009. Bad Dürkheim Wurstmarkt The Dürkheim Wurstmarkt (sausage market) is the world’s biggest wine festival. Don’t miss the official opening with the German wine queen and the mayor: 11 to 15 September 2009. Event Highlights The finer Wine This is just a small selection of our events. More information: www.romantic-germany.info and village in the region. On any given weekend, you can sample wines from the local vineyards and savour some of the best German food you've ever tasted. Winter Wine is also a pleasure that can be enjoyed in winter, and we don't just mean by candlelight in front of a roaring fire, but outside in the crisp winter air. There really is nothing more comforting that wrapping your hands round a hot mug of glühwein under the magical lights of a Christmas market. The aroma of roasted almonds and gingerbread wafting through the stalls just adds to the festive spirit. What a way to end the year! www.romantic-germany.info 7 Explorers wanted Nature Cycling along the Moselle The car-free cycling fun days in Rhineland-Palatinate are exciting and unusual experiences that the whole family can enjoy.
