This means your contributions are tax deductible as allowed by law. Donations to the Foundation are the primary source of money to provide programs and activities here. Your generosity makes things happen! People believe that foundations and companies contribute the most to fundraising for non-profit organizations. In fact, MOST money (73%) comes from individual donors like you (Giving USA 2012). At the Senior Center, the yearly budget for programs and special events – expenses not covered by the City – is about $35,000. That is a significant amount for the Senior Center Foundation to raise. Did you notice the logos of our corporate sponsors displayed above? We value and appreciate them, but their combined contribution is less than 30% of that needed to sustain our programs, activities and special events. How do we use your donation? Contributions are invested by the Senior Center Foundation. Each year, the Senior Center director presents a request to the Foundation board for the annual support of our programs and activities. We depend on you to “Help Our Foundation Grow” and, therefore, provide our participants with Senior Center programs and activities. Be part of that essential 70%. Your personal donation counts! Please use this donor coupon to make your contribution today. Or, make your donation electronically: http://www.cityofmadison.com/seniorcenter/donations. Thank you very much! Volunteer Spotlight: Helen Aarli Helen Aarli’s commitment to volunteerism spans several decades. She volunteers because she defines herself as part of a larger community where each of us is responsible for the other. She characterizes herself as a feminist, a supporter of gay rights, and respectful of all cultures. She volunteers as co-producer/co-host of Senior Beat. It offers many opportunities to meet interesting people, learn a great deal about issues affecting older adults, and develop interviewing skills (see Senior Beat schedule on page 3). Helen is involved with three PLATO classes: politics, philosophy and art museums (where she is coordinator). The classes provide a means to continue learning and growing and develop friendships. She serves on PLATO’s curriculum committee. Helen characterizes herself as “genetically political,” and Madison provides a perfect environment for meaningful and direct involvement in politics, art and learning. For Helen, the definition of successful living is personal involvement in the present moment. Being interested, active and engaged in life and her community are vital components of Helen’s life.
