Perhaps you are one of the lucky ones who has known for a number of years exactly where you see yourself going once you graduate? In that case we will be happy to support you in putting the right strategies into place to ensure that your career ambitions are realised. How do I book? Drop into the Careers Service (in the Horton Building) or phone us on +44 (0)1784 443073. What is much more likely however is that you have chosen your particular area of study because you enjoy it and are good at it but that you don’t yet have clear ideas about what you want to do once you graduate. Our job is to help you find inspiration; to explore your options; to consider what different paths might bring you fulfillment; and to help equip you with the tools you will need to get to where you decide you want to be. Quick Queries Where? The Careers Service, in the Horton Building. When? • During term time: Monday – Thursday, 11:00-12:00 and 14:00-16:00 • During vacation: Monday – Thursday, 14:00-16:00 • Hours may be extended during high demand periods. Who? Depending on the nature of your query, your appointment will be with one of our Careers Consultants, specialist CV and Application Advisers or an Information Officer. How long? These appointments last for a fixed, 15 minute, pre-booked time slot. However, if your query is not fully answered during this time you will be invited to book another Quick Query, or occasionally an extended appointment. What can I talk about in this session? The short answer is – anything whatsoever that is careers related! Examples of the sorts of things you might want to discuss are: • Effective job-hunting • Further study • Recruitment and selection processes, such as application forms, psychometric tests, assessment centres and interviews • Decisions around choosing modules or changing courses • General career planning – identifying areas of interest, relevant skills and experiences and thinking about how best to fill gaps in your CV • How to improve your employability in order to give yourself an advantage in the graduate job market • Getting feedback on your CV, covering letters, applications or personal statements How do I prepare for my Quick Query? To get the maximum benefit from your 15 minutes we encourage you to prepare by taking advantage of other Careers Service resources (familiarise yourself with what’s available to you by browsing the other sections of this handbook). Consider what might help you take the next step on your career journey. 8 Career Discussions If both you and the Careers Consultant with whom you have a Quick Query session agree that a longer session would be beneficial and timely, then you may be referred for what we call a Career Discussion appointment for up to one hour. To provide us with some information about your academic background and work experience and invites you to reflect on your career aspirations. Tell me more These appointments take place at various times and days – we will agree a mutually convenient slot with you. On the day of your appointment you’ll be met in the Careers Service by a Careers Consultant who will take you to a private meeting room where your session will take place. Practice Interviews • Perhaps you are not sure how best to deal with competency questions or strengths based interviews? • Maybe you have difficulty managing your nerves and would appreciate some feedback on your body language? • You might not know how best to prepare for the big day? The good news The Careers Service offers you the opportunity to have a mock interview and get constructive feedback. We know from our students that this can significantly improve interview performance. Tell me more These one-hour appointments take place at various times and days – we will agree a mutually convenient slot with you. On the day of your appointment you’ll be met in the Careers Service by a Careers Consultant who will take you to a private meeting room where your session will take place. Remember! The more information you can provide us about the job, the better – and the more notice you give us, the more likely it is that we’ll have an available slot to offer you. Themed careers weeks Meet employers and alumni from across the sectors who will talk about their work and share their top tips Business and Finance Week Passport Award Skills Week 20 - 24 October 2014 The worlds of business and finance offer so many opportunities. Where should you start? 26 - 30 January 2015 Just like the Royal Holloway Passport Award, the focus of this week is to help you develop and articulate a range of skills that will help you during your degree, and beyond. #RHULBizWeek The workshop “Business & Finance Careers: A Beginner’s Guide” kicks the week off, providing you with a simple and clear overview of the main areas of opportunity in these popular sectors. In the days following, Royal Holloway alumni from a range of business and finance professions, including management consulting and investment banking, join us to share their experiences and tips for breaking into coveted graduate roles. The panel discussion “The Best Kept Secrets: Business & Finance Careers you Never Knew Existed”, sheds light on some of the less obvious career choices that many students and graduates miss. Throughout the week there are also workshops and talks from world-renowned business and finance employers, plus expert training sessions delivered by our team of Careers Consultants. Whether you know exactly what you want to do, or if you’d simply like to find out what your options are Business & Finance Week is an excellent opportunity to broaden your knowledge and gain some winning tips. Science Week #RHULScience 17- 21 November 2014 Want to carry on using your science or maths? How about patent work, programming, science writing or publishing? Through meeting alumni and professionals from science employers at all stages of their careers, you’ll hear about the diverse range of roles and employers in these areas as well as routes into the sector and tips on how to express your technical and personal skills in interviews. We’ll be covering environmental careers, academic research, science in the public sector, numerical careers and much more. Feedback from students who have come to previous themed week events..... #PassportSkills Employers and College staff will deliver interactive sessions on a range of themes that will typically include presentation skills, interview techniques, commercial awareness, networking, assessment centres and more. We’ll be asking student clubs and societies to nominate topics they would like included in the workshop programme, so all ideas are welcome! In addition to developing practical skills you’ll get to talk to employers and gain an insight into their recruitment processes. In the lead up to the week we’ll be offering help with identifying any skills gaps you have, and what you can do to develop those skills in a way that’s relevant to your interests. Marketing, PR & Event Management Week #RHULMarCom 9 - 13 February 2015 This is your opportunity to learn from – and quiz – a range of professionals from inside these fast-moving and competitive industries. Former Royal Holloway students, industry professionals and experienced Careers Consultants come together to shine a light on which roles might suit you (and explain how you might break into them). The involving, engaging sessions will cover a wide range of areas such as marketing, marketing communications, advertising, public relations (PR), business development and event management. You’ll also learn about opportunities in digital media and how to choose whether working for an agency, in-house or freelance is best for you. Creative and Media Careers Week #rhulcmc 2 - 6 March 2015 Many Royal Holloway alumni go on to work in ‘creative’ careers such as TV, film, radio, museums, galleries, publishing, journalism and writing. During creative and media week we will invite some of them back to tell you how they got their jobs and what it’s like day to day. “Incredibly insightful, interesting and captivating, not to mention incredibly inspiring” This week is a great chance to build your network of contacts which are essential to get into these industries. There will also be workshops to help you find and apply for internships and jobs in the creative industries. As working freelance is common in this sector, we will explore the skills and practicalities involved in being your own boss. “Great to have people from RHUL to speak. Really eclectic range” Details of all events can be found at www.royalholloway.ac.uk/careers/events “Gave a real life feel to the industry” Events and workshops may be recorded and/or photographed for publicity purposes. The Royal Holloway Passport Award recognises students’ remarkable contribution to the College and the wider community through the co-curricular activities they undertake. From holding a committee position in a student club or society to helping on our Open Days, students can earn points towards the Passport Award by completing a variety of voluntary and paid work opportunities throughout their time at Royal Holloway. The Passport Award: • Encourages students to undertake a range of activities • Develops the skills that employers are looking for • Teaches how to showcase transferable skills to employers Students receiving their Passport Awards in June 2014 Our graduates say: “What’s great about the Passport Award is that it allowed me to state on my CV that the university had formally recognised the work that I put in to extra-curricular university life and the skills I had gained” (BSc Geography and PIR, 2013) “The co-curricular activities I did at university were a major contributing factor to my finding work after university” (BA English Literature, 2013) • Celebrates students’ achievements at an awards ceremony Those who complete the Passport Award can work towards the Passport Gold Award, which recognises substantial commitment over a period of time, breadth of engagement, leadership and innovation. For more information and to find out about the roles and activities you can do to earn points towards your Passport Award, visit www.royalholloway.ac.uk/Passport or come and see us at the Welcome Week Fair or in the Careers Service. *CBI NUS Employability report May 2011: ‘Working Towards Your Future’ 10 Did you know that 82% of graduate employers rank your ‘employability skills’ as a priority when recruiting?* What do you have to offer? Careers fairs Looking for a full-time graduate role, or a part-time job whilst you’re studying? Our autumn and spring term Careers and Employability programmes include a variety of opportunities for meeting employers on campus – from presentations and skills sessions to larger fairs where you can network face-to-face with a number of recruiters. These are excellent opportunities to find out about recruitment procedures for internships and graduate jobs. Look out for tips offered through our social media, as well as the specialised workshops we run. Ask for guidance in the Careers to ensure you are equipped with the professional skills needed to address recruiters effectively at these events, make the best impression, and follow-up appropriately. “The Part-time Jobs Fair was fantastic. There were lots of both small and large employers there and it was a great opportunity to find out what they had to offer and what they were looking for. I was able to secure a part-time job in retail after applying to one of these companies and I am now currently pursuing a full-time position there.” Edward Johnson, BA Drama “In my second year I really valued the jobs fairs, where you can speak to employers and find out what they’re looking for, ask questions that help you understand if you could fit in with their organisational culture – and even get a few business cards and keep in touch with them.” Olga Turek, BSc Management Royal Holloway careers fairs Central London fairs and events Part-time Jobs Fairs • 1 October 2014, 11:30-14:30 • 21 January 2015, 11:30-14:30 The London Graduate Fair – 14 October 2014.
