Ouwinga will visit to teach us about bonsai
pots and sell us great specimens.
The club’s directors have a board meeting
before the January meeting. Several new
ideas have been suggested, including a
competition that takes place over several
months. We will discuss these ideas at the
board meeting. Please email me ideas

Many of you were fortunate enough to
attend the Winter Silhouette Bonsai Expo
in Kannapolis in December. Several of our
club members displayed great trees.
Bonsai artists from Florida to New York
attended and exhibited, and the trees were
exceptional. There were demos by William
Valavanis, Owen Reich and Ken Duncan &
John Geanangel. All were really great and
very interesting. There was an auction,
with good value items.
Joe Noga photographed the trees; as
always he did an exceptional job. A
selection of his photos can be viewed
starting on Page 3.

Matt Ouwinga Returns
You know you never have the right container when you want to repot a bonsai.
Solution: Just in time for repotting season, TBS members will have the opportunity to
purchase high quality Japanese bonsai pots at the January meeting. Matt Ouwinga, who
imports a large number of bonsai pots from Japan each month, will bring a selection of
containers, large and small, for sale to members.
To make sure Matt brings some pots for you to choose from for your trees, use the form
below to describe any specific pot or pots you would like him to bring for your specific tree.
This is one meeting when you don't want to arrive late and miss first choice on the
container of your dreams.
All the bonsai containers will be on display by 1:00 o'clock and ready for purchase.
Seedlings for forest plantings
Matt Ouwinga grows a large number of a variety of seedlings: trident maple, Japanese
maples, hornbeam, Chinese quince, Chinese elm, Japanese quince, Zelkova, stewartia and
more. The seedlings are bare root, one year old seedlings (and some older), just right for

As time permits, Matt also offered to give members comments on any bonsai they bring to
the meeting.
Care of Bonsai Tools
What good is a tool if it won't cut?
How do you sharpen the various bonsai tools?
How do you clean rust from a tool?
How do you prevent rust from forming on tools?
What are characteristics of quality tools?
A portion of the meeting will explain the care and maintenance of bonsai tools. A member
will explain the steps to rejuvenate a tool and a video will show the techniques. In small
breakout groups, experienced members will offer advice to individual members on the
member's tools. Actual work will not be done on a member's tools but advice on what to do
will be offered.

January To-Do’s
Here are some of the key activities for the month of January. These activities are for the central
Carolina area, Zone 7b/8a, but remember the micro-climate in your backyard may vary. You can
find more complete monthly care guides at the Triangle Bonsai Society Monthly Care site at
http://www.trianglebonsai.com/monthly-care .
This month you need to prepare for the busy soon to come spring activities. A large calendar with
spaces for each day of the month is excellent. By using a calendar you can pace yourself to do
all the necessary preliminary tasks and you won't be overburdened during the very busy months
of March, April and May.
Cold winter winds can cause soil in containers to dry out very quickly. Be certain to check and
water your trees, if needed.
• If you haven't applied a dormant spray in late fall do so now. You can use either refined oil or
lime sulphur on your evergreens and deciduous plants. Refined oil is recommended for broad
leafed evergreens and conifers and is easier to use. Ensure you follow directions on the label
and do not exceed the recommended formula.
• Wash all training and growing containers and bonsai pots. After scrubbing you should soak the
containers/pots for 10 minutes in a household bleach (not scented). Carefully mix a solution of
1 part bleach to 9 parts of water. This is a strong solution so use plastic gloves or a pair of
tongs when placing containers into the bleach solution and removing them from the solution.
• Prepare soil mixes for your potting and re-potting in the next few months. Visit the TBS website,
TBS Soil, for great information on soil mixes and even some local sources.
• If you have wired any bonsai in the late fall you should check to make certain the wires are not
too tight.
• Collect moss and store it in a suitable location (cool shady area) in your garden for use in later
months for potting and re-potting.
If you missed root-pruning and transplanting your Chinese Quince (Oct.-Dec.) you can do so this
month, if normal bud activity begins. Branch pruning can now be done on Apple, Crape Myrtle,
Maples, black/white Pines, Japanese Quince (after flowering), Spruce, and Sweetgum. Wiring
can be done on Cedar, Chamaecyparis (Hinoki), Cryptomeria, Fir, all Pines, Podacarpus, Spruce,
and Yew.
This month is a good time to read or reread your favorite books on bonsai, Saikei, horticulture,
bonsai pots, or if you’re like me you prefer to just plug in a DVD. Remember to check out a book
or DVD from the club’s library. The ever increasing list of available books and DVDs is available
on line ( TBS Library ).
