Auditors and Accountancy Company Dunkley's have
sponsored a Gromit as part of the Wallace and Gromit's
Grand Appeal supporting the Bristol Children's Hospital
Charity.
Gromit will be staying at their offices at Woodlands
Grange for 14 weeks.

Led by Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal and Aardman
Animations, Gromit Unleashed is a public art exhibition
in which giant sculptures of Gromit, decorated by invited
artists, have been unleashed on the streets of Bristol and
the surrounding area.
At the end of the art trail, the sculptures will be auctioned
to raise funds for Wallace & Gromit's Grand Appeal, the
Bristol Children's Hospital Charity.

Message from the Mayor
May 15th 2013 I was elected by my fellow Cllrs as chair of Full Council and I was honoured to have the title of Mayor of Bradley Stoke
bestowed on me.
Born in 1948 in Bristol to my Mother Rose and my Father Harry, I have always lived in the area moving in 1948 to 64 Worthing Road in
what was then the Parish of Almondsbury. My Parents, whom I am very proud of, took up various roles in the area, my Father eventually
becoming Station Master at Patchway, in those days a very busy place, and my Mother taking on the role of Caretaker at nearby St
Chad’s School, then located on the A38.
Having run a business and brought up a family of five children from my home in Stoke Lodge, it was in 2007 that I ran as a Cllr for South
Glos and also for the two Towns which my ward of Central Bradley Stoke and Stoke Lodge and the Common fell into. Since then, to say
that I have been busy is an understatement.
My election on May 15 was swiftly followed by that of John Ashe, a fellow Cllr whom I hold in great esteem, who was voted in as Vice
Chair of Bradley Stoke as my acting deputy. John Ashe of the councillors currently elected, has been the longest serving councillor of
Bradley Stoke Town Council. During this time he has been involved with the many positive changes which have helped shape Bradley
Stoke into the vibrant Town it is today. John’s first Civic Duty as Deputy Mayor was to open the new Coffee Shop at the Leisure Centre.
No sooner I was elected as many previous Mayors before me took part in the Bradley Stoke Festival. It was a really fabulous weekend
kicking off on the Friday morning with the Friends of Jubilee Green which gave a fabulous start, well done Michelle Dent, Helen North,
Sam Leary and Kate Ingram who have achieved so much for this well loved community owned project. The Friends of Jubilee Green
who are just that “Friends” are looking for more friends to join their group. If you would like to help with the many events they put on
during the year please contact them.
The Festival itself saw, on the Saturday, a record number of people enjoying themselves, comments I heard from so many visiting what a
brilliant day and its all free. Music, community groups, dance, football teams, gymnastics, acrobatics, good food, so many activities and
even a Beer tent what more could you want. Sunday saw the inaugural bed push with 9 teams competing. Joining in is so much more
fun than watching, my team came mid in the rankings and with an average age of 60+ I think we did very well, albeit totally exhausted.
Brilliant fun and hopefully next year will see this run again. The Mayor’s 11 produced some wonderful cricket, albeit we were beaten to
second place by players from the Bradley Stoke Cricket Club. Based at Baileys Court this club is open to all and runs regular training
sessions on Sundays, so if you are young or old roll up and join them.
I must say that being Mayor I find myself surrounded by a great team of Councillors and Officers who are ensuring that Bradley Stoke
keeps being the great place it is. We hold meetings on a regular basis at The Jubilee to which all members of the public are welcome to
attend and where we invite you to speak within the public question time which we allocate to each meeting.
There is a myriad of events happening in Bradley Stoke, however I would like you all to join in and enjoy a new and hopefully to be run
annual event being Bradley Stoke Carnival. This its first year being held on Bank Holiday Monday the 26th of August. More details are
published elsewhere in this newsletter from Bradley Stoke Radio, who are facilitating this new Community project.

A friendly way to tackle dog fouling issues
The idea is that responsible dog owners sign a pledge to say that they will clear up after their dogs & will carry spare bags with
them which they will offer to anyone they see not clearing up. They will wear a very distinct arm band to identify them as a Green
Dog Walker. This is a non-confrontational friendly way to approach those who haven’t cleared up after their dog.
A friendly reminder…..
Green Dog Walkers is a non-confrontational, friendly way to change attitudes about dog fouling.
What’s the Green Armband for?
If you see someone wearing the Green Dog Walkers armband, it means that they have “Taken the Pledge”
to always clean up after their dog

Mayor’s Charity 2013/14
For the Mayor’s Charity this year, I have chosen three charities, one based in Bradley
Stoke, one serving the South Gloucestershire area and one National Charity.
The chosen charities are:
Friends of Jubilee Green
Heartful Dodgers
The Friends of Jubilee Green was formed in 2009 and became a
registered charity in 2010. We are an independent volunteer group
that has lots of ideas, energy and enthusiasm on the use and
development of the Park and the Jubilee Green.
Registered Charity No. 1055900
We are absolutely delighted that we have secured funding to deliver
two youth focused projects in 2013. We have been awarded a
grant for £49,999 through the Community Spaces programme
which is being managed by Groundwork UK as an Award Partner
to the Big Lottery Fund. This funding along with £10,811 from
Bradley Stoke Town Council will build a Youth Structure and
improve some of the paths in the park. Started in 2009 when three ex patients wanted to give something
back to the service. They kindly walked the Bristol half marathon
and the Heartful Dodgers were created.
(50% of money raised).
We have also secured funding from Safer Stronger Communities
Initiative funding and the Co-Operative membership fund to use
father and son artists Thrussell and Thrussell to work with the youth
of Bradley Stoke to produce 'Brass' rubbing plates in the park. Can you spare some time?
Friends of Jubilee Green is a charity ran by passionate volunteers.
We need more members so the charity can achieve more for the
community.

The ‘Heartful Dodgers’ is the fundraising arm of the Cardiac
Rehabilitation Team at North Bristol NHS Trust.
Following this success we expanded the campaign and launched
an appeal to improve Cardiac Rehabilitation Services across North
Bristol. We have regular fundraising projects; our past events
including the 109 mile Cotswold way walking challenge, runners
in the Bristol 10k and Half Marathon, Dragon boat racing, a music
festival and social events.
Money raised to date has enabled us to purchase new equipment
for all our programmes and set up a new Tai Chi programme
for patients that are unable to take part in our circuit based
programmes.
We are hoping that further fundraising, will allow us to expand our
service by funding another Specialist Nurse, enabling us to open
up additional programmes for our patients.

Whizz-Kidz

Whizz-Kidz is a charity that provides disabled children and young
people with wheelchairs, trikes and buggies, all designed to get
them on the move!

For school leavers, we arrange work placements
We are there right throughout childhood, supporting and advising
We help to give disabled kids the freedom and independence to

The Friends of Jubilee Green is a very good example of a
community coming together to improve provisions and celebrate
occasions.
All money raised for the Mayor's Charity during the two major
fundraising events that take place in the town (Community
Festival and the Fireworks Display) and any other events
organised throughout the year will be split as per the
percentages above for each group.

Bradley Stoke Community Festival 2013
Friday 07 June - Jubilee Green,
Jubilee Centre
The weather proved to be
the big winner for this years
Festival with lovely sunny
and dry conditions for all
three days. Professor Panic
and his team provided
his Teddy Bears Picnic
entertainment of juggling, circus
skills and magic for the younger children
beginning on the Thursday with all the available
slots being taken by the local primary schools.
Two sets of face painters were fully occupied during the morning
with over 200 Mothers and Toddlers attending the event with
additional entertainment provided by the Friends of Jubilee Green
providing their fun treasure trail around the play area which was
again really enjoyed. The Friends of Jubilee Green also joined in
with the Bradley Stoke in Bloom Sunflower Growing Competition,
with their very popular stall to decorate pots and plant sunflower
seeds (compost donated by Ambience Landscapes). The free
bouncy castle proved very popular.
Saturday 08 June - Jubilee Green
The second day of the Festival started at 11.30 with soloist
Sam Badcock from the Community School giving an excellent
performance followed by the Gecko Blasters, Goodnight Lois,
Astral Toasters, Resplendence, Obsidian and Jonny Casino. All
local bands and all provided energetic and entertaining sessions.
Dance performances began with the Bradley Stoke Gym Club
alongside the SG Asian Project, followed by the new Lula
Garlands Dance School, Kathryn’s Dance Academy, the brilliant
Bristol Acrogymnasts, another colourful performance by
S Glos Chinese Association alongside another new dance
group, Infinity and lastly the youngsters from Yasmins Dance
School.
The Extended demonstration area, compered by Bradley
Stoke Radio, on the Jubilee Green side was particularly
well attended this year with a full programme of acts and
demonstrations. The local Taekwondo club kicked off the
performances followed by South West Winter guard and a
curtailed model aircraft display due to the strong crosswind.
The highlight for the afternoon was the Falcons and in particular
a Griffin Vulture who was keen on an ankle or two! The aerial
display by the kestrel and short owl were really good as was the
display of rugby skills by the youngsters and coaching staff from
St Mary’s Rugby Club. Stoke Ladies Choir were in great voice
followed by second session of the model aircraft and St Mary’s
Rugby Club.
A record 90 stalls attended the Festival ranging from local
community projects and charity groups to arts and
crafts, jewellery and novelty stalls, tombolas,
coconut shies and fun games to performance
car displays and a cafe theme by the local
churches who provided free tea, coffee and
cakes throughout the afternoon. One of the
highlights was the Aztec Hotel’s Shire Horses and
Dray, which, along with the Road Train, provided
people with rides up and down the Festival site.
All stalls mentioned they had an excellent day
at the Festival with huge numbers attending,
particularly in the middle of the afternoon. It was
felt the numbers was well up on previous years with an estimated
8,000 people attending.
A range of different children’s rides and entertainments were on
offer none more popular than the Climbing wall, with the Bradley
Stoke Scouts assisting the staff, alongside Prof Panic’s Circus
with both providing the focal points for Jubilee Green.
The Grange Hotel did really well this year in making £133 for the
Mayor’s Charities by running a raffle instead of the balloon race.
16 catering and ice cream units attended with the traditional
burger and hot dogs, along with specialist coffee & tea providers,
vegetarian food and a number of Indian food outlets.
Of the 20+ entertainments Bristol Zoo’s, Zoo to You, operation
again provided a variety of giant insects, snails and cockroaches
which attracted more children into the Jubilee Centre itself.
Other attractions included Lennie the Road Train, which
transported people around the Festival site along with local
operations providing huge inflatable’s, children’s carousel, 2

bungee trampolines, tea cup ride, dome and slides as well as
vintage side stalls being provided by the local churches.
The football tournament started later at 12.30 this year on the
upper field pitches and was again a resounding success. Martin
Lee organised the tournament with over 130 boys/girls from Year
1 taking part with individual medals donated by the Council.
Due to excellent weather conditions, this would appear to have
been the best attended Festival event with a great atmosphere
within the local community who really enjoyed the range of bands,
music and especially the demonstrations and dance groups.
Donations topped £3,500 from the suppliers and entertainments
attending.
09 June - Jubilee Centre & Baileys Court
Activity Centre
The biggest number of runners, at over 560, took part in the 10k
run, organised by the Sole Sisters running group which started at
09.30 from the Jubilee centre in dry and sunny weather.
At Baileys Court Activity Centre the inaugural Bradley
Stoke Bed Race started at 1.00pm with 8 Bed teams
taking part. The 1.1 mile course ran along Webb’s
Wood Road and Baileys Court Road and took in the
Baileys Court Inn where the teams had to down a pint
(for over 18’s), then onto apple bobbing, cream cracker
eating, a netball challenge and finally a logic task to
finish. Each bed had their own volunteer running with
them but the teams went off so fast most volunteers
were left behind. Indeed the winning team from the
Hilton Hotel completed the course in 13 minutes followed by
Ben Walker’s Bradley Blazers at 14 minutes and a team from
the scouts at 15 minutes. A really fun and well enjoyed first race
which the hotel have said they will be back to defend the cup!
Bradley Stoke Radio was again excellent in providing a running
commentary on the race with their radio car broadcasting around
the area and driving ahead of the first teams.
Following the bed race a 20 over cricket match took place
between the Mayor’s Xl and a Bradley Stoke Cricket Club XI
starting at 2.30p.m. The Mayor’s XI batted first and posted a very
respectable 135 runs in their 20 over’s which the BSCC team
reached in the 19th over so a really close and fun match enjoyed
by the 100+ spectators. The Cricket Club provided refreshments
and BBQ throughout the afternoon and the Bradley Stoke Bowls
Club had a match involving over 50 players which added to the
well frequented Clubhouse.
This was a really enjoyable conclusion to the 2013 Festival
which will be remembered for lovely sunny conditions and a very
enjoyable and fun 3 days.
Friends of Jubilee Green
In April 2013, Friends of Jubilee Green received
a Community Development Grant from Bradley
Stoke Town Council to carry out a number of
community events over the next year. The first of
the events, the Community Festival Pre-School
Picnic took place on Friday 7th June 2013.
We provided a treasure hunt that required the children, with
support of their carers, to locate 15 envelopes that had been
hidden in the park. The envelopes contained nature stickers
– trees, leaves and woodland animals such as owls, badgers
and foxes that the children then used to make a picture using a
printed background that we provided. Once their picture was
complete they could chose prizes from our prize box and some
sweets. The prizes in the prize box were sourced from the
Children’s Scrapstore and contained toys that you would find in
cereal boxes such as dinosaurs, ice lolly makers, stickers and
Spiderman toys.
In addition to the treasure hunt we also invited the children to
decorate their own plant pot using materials we had obtained
from the Children’s Scrapstore. The children then filled their pots
with soil (donated by Ambience Landscapes), planted sunflower
seeds provided by Bradley Stoke
Town Council for the sunflower
growing competition and watered
their seeds. We used all of the
sunflowers provided and had to
get more competition sheets, let’s
hope that they grow well.
The sand toys and sports
equipment was available for use,
with buckets and spades being
very popular. We were also able
to provide hoopla and ball throwing games for the
children to enjoy due to the kind loan of equipment from a local
parent.
A fantastic day was had by all – the weather was mostly good
and all of the children and adults were very enthusiastic about the
activities. With many parents and carers sad to see everything
being packed away at 2pm – there were far too many people still
arriving at 1pm when it was supposed to finish!
We estimate that approximately 160 people attended this
successful event.

Bradley Stoke Youth F.C Football Festival
The annual BSYFC Football
Festival was again played
in glorious sunshine at the
Jubilee Centre, Bradley
Stoke. The event was
again very well supported
by all the local schools and
the local community.
The 2013 Football Festival was made up
of 13 local school teams of Year 1 children
with 10 children per school playing in a
series of matches in a 7v7 format of 10
minutes duration.
The Football Festival is part of the SchoolsClub Link Program that Bradley Stoke
Youth FC manages, where FA qualified
coaches run football coaching sessions
in 14 local schools with Year 1 children
prior to the Festival allowing children to
experience football in a friendly and fun
based environment. The program this year
has coached over 680 children. The club
also run coaching sessions in at 4 local
school with Year 3 and 4 girls. This program
in 2013 has coachedBradley
over 140 girls.

Bradley Stoke in Bloom
Safer & Stronger
Do you care about your community?
Do you want to be heard and get things done?
Then why not come along to the next Safer Stronger Community
Group (SSCG) meeting your area? SSCGs influence how
services are delivered locally, establish longer-term plans to
improve areas, help prevent future problems, and deal with
current local issues.
There are 20 Safer Stronger Community Groups across South
Gloucestershire for residents to attend and raise local issues
that concern them. They can give their views on possible
improvements to further strengthen their communities and keep
these safe places to live and work.
The meetings are also attended by partner agencies, including
South Gloucestershire Council, Avon and Somerset Police,
Avon Fire and Rescue Service, NHS South Gloucestershire,
Town and Parish Councils and other local organisations. These
organisations work together on the issues raised and often involve
the community in implementing solutions.
Some of the issues raised and tackled have included creating
positive activities for young people, anti-social behaviour,
school crossing concerns, speeding and parking. Community
grants through the Safer Stronger Communities Initiative Fund
have helped support initiatives raised at the meetings, such as
Community Speedwatch groups, community garden work, youth
engagement activities, park improvements, activities for older
people, and equipment for walking buses to schools.

to achieve this through tidying up some of the
open green areas of the town and have some
bolder projects in mind as well. Following a series of public meetings, a steering group of local
residents has been formed and an action plan is being put
together. It really is early days with a lot remaining to be done,
and a lot of help/support will be needed.
The group had a stand at the recent Bradley Stoke Festival and
the reaction from the people we spoke with was overwhelmingly
positive. We took the opportunity to promote the ‘grow a
sunflower’ competition – really for the kiddies but open for all
ages (to be judged in late August) and of course the ‘Best Front
Garden in Bradley Stoke’ for which your nominations are still
welcome - either your own or for example a neighbour. Small can
be beautiful and some of the best nominations so far are for really
very small plots, so please don’t think you need a vast acreage to
be in with a chance. Garden entries will be judged in late August.
BSiB have already received some generous financial and moral
support from the local town council, Bradley Stoke Lions,
Bradley Stoke Physio and the town council grounds maintenance
company, Ambience Landscapes.
We’re keen to hear from you if you would like to participate, either
directly in the working groups or contributing one of the skills
we need such as photography or looking after the books. We
also need ideas of which public parts of the town could do with
a spruce up – we have a few in mind but all contributions are

Could this be a good time to join a community
oil buying scheme?
Householders and community buildings all over the West of England
are paying less for their heating oil by joining a community oil buying
scheme run by a local charity, the West of England Rural Network
(WERN). The scheme works by placing a single collective order at
the beginning of every month, and having greater negotiating power
with heating oil suppliers.
Scheme co-ordinator Jill Baker says “Summer is a really good time
to fill up your heating oil tank, as demand drops and prices tend to
be lower. Suppliers are keen to work with us and give our members
a really good price”. Members of the scheme can order as little
as 500 litres, and as infrequently as they choose, and still pay the
negotiated price. The member oil price in May was 55.35p per litre
(plus VAT at 5%). One of the scheme members recently saved £124
on a single 500L delivery, as they’d been paying 79p per litre on their
top-up scheme. The annual membership fee is £20 for households,
£30 for community buildings and £100 for businesses.

The town council is keen to be as transparent as possible in how it is spending the

and Amenities. All Council and Standing
Committee meetings are open to the public
and the press. At any of the meetings there
is time for electors to ask questions during
public question time. Times and dates of

Noticeboards and on the Town Council Web
Site.
Grant Aid
Bradley Stoke Town Council has allocated
a sum of money each year for grant aid to
be awarded for small projects that benefit
the local community (maximum grant is
£500.00). All applications are considered
on their merits. Application forms may be
obtained from the BSTC Office. Grant Aid
is only available to organisations and not
individuals. There is also a Community
Development Grant Funding budget
available for bigger projects (maximum
grant £4,000).
