Bill Irvine - 1st Ripley Scout Group
Ripley Scouts warmly welcomes you and thanks you for supporting this local music festival and fundraising event. We hope it will be an excellent day of summer village life at its best. (And if it does rain, just enjoy the fact you are getting the traditional Glastonbury experience without all the travel and expense.) Ripley Scouts is very proud of its long tradition of active involvement with the Ripley community – everything from supervising car-parking on special village occasions to pulling ragwort on the Green and providing refreshments at the Farmer’s Market. The set-up today is a combined effort which will benefit not just ourselves but also the following local groups. Special thanks, therefore, to: ■ Vocals :: Bav Singh Guitar :: Alex Gardner Bass :: Ben Pollard Drums :: Charlie Pollard Guitar :: Alex Mawby Ripley Cricket Club for providing and staffing the bars ■ Ripley Infant School for providing tea and cakes ■ Guildford East District Explorer Scouts for help with car-parking, which will be used to raise funds for their charity work in Nepal during 2009 When Scouts are ever mentioned, the same few words spring instantly to people’s minds – ‘Be prepared’; ‘Dyb Dyb’ etc; ‘Crest of a wave’ and ‘woggle’ would about do it. With considerable pleasure I can reveal to you that the word which most typifies Ripley Scouts at the moment is none of these. And it is…? Frankly, the best word would be – Bulging. Surprising but true. Bulging with the enthusiasm of a great team of uniformed leaders, full of ideas and quite phenomenal levels of energy and commitment (a secret breakfast recipe has been rumoured). Bulging with the numbers of boys and girls in all sections – Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Looking forward to next year, Ripley Scouts Centenary will be bulging with special events and the launch of a new group – The Friends of Ripley Scouts. Even our waiting lists are bulging (but we welcome new members from families who are ready to lend a bit of a hand. See our web-site www.ripleyscouts.org for more about our group and our admissions policy). He can be seen either as a solo performer or with a three/four piece band. His playing style has a roots/blues edge to it with lots of airy open tunings and the use of a boot board for body and percussion. Bill is an original songwriter whose songs are diverse, melodic and contemporary. He dexterously plays National resonator guitars and uses them frequently during solo sets, “I love my National to sound like clashing swords when I play slide!” Equally, he is just at home plugging in a Strat through an old Marshall and turning up the heat! “I love playing in a powerful band set-up, especially a 3 piece.” Bill fell in love with didgeridoos on a trip to Australia around the time of the Millennium. His set now sees him deftly mastering a variety of didgeridoos in different keys; he successfully and outstandingly manages to combine these with his vocals, guitars and foot stomp to create a bluesy and unique fusion of remarkably powerful sounds guaranteeing a fully engaged audience breathless with anticipation for more. What makes his performance stand out head and shoulders above the rest is a package of multi tasking; he has a tripod for three of his didgeridoos, which frees up his hands to play guitar. RIPLEY CRICKET CLUB Your bar today has been organised by Ripley Cricket Club, who are pleased to offer their support to the first “Ripley Rocks” extravaganza. The club boasts a superb clubhouse, a history which goes back to the 1700’s and a cricket pitch placed right in the heart of the village on the village green. We welcome players who enjoy competition cricket, running three senior Saturday league sides, as well as those who play for the sake of the game; our Sunday teams play traditional friendly matches, though we are also part of The Surrey Trust league. We have a thriving Academy, providing coaching and matches for youngsters from the ages of under nine to under seventeen. We are reaping the reward of hard work in this area over the past years, as these players now feed through with enthusiasm and talent to the senior sides. The club attracts a good social membership; the friendly atmosphere provides for a relaxing pint on the balcony as folk enjoy the entertainment of matches. Many social activities and events are organised throughout the year, the next being the opportunity to enjoy the talents of Sultana as they blast forth from our clubhouse in the evening of July 19th, to which everyone is invited. We welcome enquiries about membership… call our membership secretary, Peter Cliff on 01483 224051 and you can visit our website www.ripleycc.com Bill’s highly successful debut album Bare Bones is not your common or garden offering as he explains, “I always wanted to do a raw old fashioned recording with everything done in one live take, just like the way the old 1930s guys did, but of course with a bit of modern sparkle also!” www.myspace.com/billyirvinemusic His stripped-down brand of blues draws inspiration from the sounds of: Jimi Hendrix and Bukka White, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Robert Johnson, Son House, Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter, Chris Whitley, Ash Dargan, David Hudson, Reef,The Black Crowes and many more. 2008 will see Bill playing at a number of key venues and festivals as well as writing new material and cutting an electric EP of the album Bare Bones. Bill has commissioned the creation of a video for ‘Right Some Wrong’ which is on target to be ready for June 2008. “Special mention should be made of Bill Irvine’s roots/ blues set, built around the unique use of didgeridoos, guitar with plenty of slide, rhythm boot and a voice which sits perfectly on top.” GEOFF WOOTTON, PETERSFIELD & BORDON POST – review of a gig in April 2008. The original members Chris Goulding (guitar), George Benn (bass guitar/vocal), Nick (Spiggy) Goddard (guitar/keyboards) were joined by Keith Goulding (drums) in ‘67. Up till then Keith had been playing lead guitar in a local Southampton band “The Ides of March”. ■ Nelsons Column played at most of the University Student Union gigs. Supporting many of the bands who later went on to become major recording mega stars. These included:- Cream, Zoot Money, Chicken Shack, Pink Floyd, The Yardbirds, Ten Years After, Alan Price Set, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers to “name drop” just a few. ■ Their music is firmly rooted in the ‘Sixties’ and influenced by a mixture of blues, rock, folk and country performers including Chuck Berry, Albert King, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, Paul Butterfield and Gavin Trend. Chris Wilson – guitar Keith O’Neil – guitar Plus friends. The Intruders & Friends In 1961 Peter, John and Peter with 2 other mates from Surbiton Grammar School decided to form a group called The Intruders. During those early years of the “Swinging Sixties”, the band tried to fit in as many local gigs as they could between studying for their exams. Three and a half years later, in 1964, the group disbanded as they all took different career paths and didn’t play together again for nearly 44 years. The two Peters and John, who remained close friends throughout, have recently celebrated their 60th birthdays and it was this landmark in their lives that prompted them to resurrect the group. Peter Perry’s brother Keith became the fourth member of The Intruders who then staged their first 3 comeback appearances at their respective birthday parties. RIPLEY ROCKS marks the 4th outing for the band, who will be playing an instrumental set of Shadows hits, before being joined by “Friends” Clare Lewis and Matt Blair. The vocal and musical skills of these 2 youngsters will add an interesting contrast to the second half of the set when a selection of contemporary and classic hits will be played.
