Father Flatley 50th Anniversary
Father Brian Flatley is celebrating the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood on
Sunday, May 29, 2016. Mass will be celebrated at Saint Agnes Church at 2:00 P.M., with a
reception to follow on the Parish grounds. Father Flatley would love to have parishioners of
Saint Agnes Parish join him for this happy occasion. If you are able to be with us, please
RSVP by Friday, May 20, with a number, at frflatley50@saintagnes.net. If you cannot be with
him, Father Flatley asks that you remember him in prayer.
Saint Agnes Parish joyfully welcomes
One more year! Cardinal Seán has accepted
Father Flatley’s resignation, which Canon Law
required that he submit on reaching his 75th
birthday. At Father Flatley's request, Cardinal
Seán has deferred the effective date of the
resignation for one year. The Cardinal has also
extended Father Jack Graham’s appointment to
Saint Agnes Parish for another year. We are
both very pleased.

Plenary Indulgence in Jubilee Year of Mercy
People living with depression: Next meeting of
the depression peer support and prayer group,
Thursday, April 28, 6:30-8:00 PM, Saint Agnes
Parish Center, 6:30-8:00 PM. For more information,

or

Pope Francis has
granted a plenary
indulgence to the
faithful world-wide
who
make
a
pilgrimage to the
Holy Door of their
local
cathedral
during the Jubilee
Year. Cardinal Seán
has outlined the conditions for receiving this plenary
indulgence:
Sacramental confession of sins; Profession of faith;
Participation in the celebration and reception of the
Holy Eucharist with a reflection on Mercy; Offering
prayers for the intentions of the Pope.
Fulfilling these conditions and making a brief
pilgrimage to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, one
can gain a plenary indulgence for oneself.
The Pope also stated that The sick, the elderly and
those confined to their homes, by living with faith
and joyful hope during their trials, may receive the
Jubilee Indulgence by receiving Communion or
attending Holy Mass and community prayer, even
through the various forms of media.
Those who perform the spiritual and corporal works
of mercy: Pope states, “Each time that one of the
faithful personally performs one or more of these
actions, he or she shall surely obtain the Jubilee
Indulgence. Hence the commitment to live by mercy
so as to obtain the grace of complete and
exhaustive forgiveness by the power of the love of
the Father who excludes no one”;
The deceased. The Holy Father reminds us that we
may gain the Jubilee Indulgence not only for
ourselves, but for the deceased as well. He states,
“as we remember them in the Eucharistic
celebration, thus we can, in the great mystery of the
Communion of Saints, pray for them, that the
merciful Father free them of every remnant of fault
and strongly embrace them in the unending
beatitude.”
The conditions mentioned above may be fulfilled
several days before or after the performance of the
indulgenced work or pilgrimage. It is fitting that
Communion be received and the prayer for the
intention of the Holy Father and the profession of
faith be said on the same day. A single sacramental
confession suffices for several plenary indulgences
but receiving Communion and praying for the Holy
Father’s intentions are required for each indulgence.
Our Children’s Choir, Grades 1-8, sings for the final
time this School year on Sunday, May 8,
Mother’s Day, at the 9:00 A.M. Family
Mass with 8:15 A.M. rehearsal. We
forego the usual black and white attire
and wear bright colors for this final choir
date and our First Communicants may
wear their First Holy Communion outfits, if they
choose. The choir will lead the May Procession
(weather permitting) immediately after the Mass, with
the year-end party to follow at Saint Agnes School
Hall. The party will end at 11:00 A.M. Please call, text
or email Michael Vaughan with questions:
mrv2022@gmail.com or 617-833-0364. Many thanks
to Diane Stickles, Kimberly Howe, Virginia
Lawrence and Cate Gallagher for all of their
wonderful leadership and assistance throughout our
2015/2016 Children’s Choir year! A huge thanks
to all the kids who sing in the choir helping make
our Family Mass so special
Bulletin Announcements must be
received at the Parish Center by
Monday morning.
Rediscover Jesus Book Discussion Sessions:
We have had two great
discussions on our Easter Book,
Rediscover
Jesus.
This
Wednesday we will focus on
chapters 14-20. There is no
need to have attended the
earlier sessions to participate
fully this week. The discussions
offer opportunities to learn more
about the ideas and insights
shared in the book, and from
the reflections of neighbors who come from many
stages of faith and walks of life. The sessions will
take place on Wednesday evenings, 7:30-8:45 in
the Parish Center on 4/27, 5/4, 5/11 and 5/18. For
more information and for the list of chapters to be
discussed each week, visit www.saintagnes.net and
click on “Rediscover Jesus.”

This Consultative Team acts as an advisory body for the Administrative Team. Each School Board member

Saint Agnes Parish, Arlington, Massachusetts - The Fifth Sunday of Easter - April 23-24, 2016
Saint Agnes Parish Pastoral Council Meeting: April 10, 2016: Father Flatley opened the meeting with a
prayer.
Lent, Holy Week and Easter were a beautiful time in our Parish.
Archdiocesan Collaborative: No date has been determined for the collaborative of the Arlington Parishes.
Father Flatley submitted his resignation as required. Cardinal Seán accepted the resignation but deferred
accepting it for a year. Father Jack has also been renewed for another year.
Parish Initiative: Father Jack spoke about the Parish Easter Initiative. There was an overwhelming
response to the request for volunteers to organize the assembly and distribution of the book, “Rediscover
Jesus”, by Matthew Kelly. The response of parishioners to the book has been exceedingly positive. Weekly
discussions begin on Wednesday in the Parish Center. The Parish website has a breakdown of the focus of
each week’s discussion.
Episcopal Vicar Father Gerard Petringa celebrated Mass with the students of Arlington Catholic High
School in Saint Agnes Church during Catholic Schools Week. His visits are always delightful.
Church Painting: Interior painting will be finished soon. The windows look especially good with the new trim.
Father Flatley 50th anniversary: May 29, 2:00 PM: Family and Friends from outside the Parish will receive
formal invitations. Parishioners will receive a general invitation through the bulletin. The event will begin with
Mass then move to the Parish grounds for a cookout. There will be a tent on the lawn.
Year of Mercy Pilgrimage to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross: Bernie Wadsworth discussed the pilgrimage
initiative. The current plan is to take this 7½ mile walk from Saint Agnes to the Cathedral on Monday,
September 5, Labor Day, following the 7:00 AM Mass. Transportation will be arranged for those unable to
walk. Walkers and riders will meet at the Cathedral then proceed together through the Holy Door. The
Blessed Sacrament will be exposed and Father Flatley hopes to Celebrate Mass. Father Flatley and Father
Jack will be available for Confessions. Medical personnel must still be secured to attend walkers on the
pilgrimage.
PPC Elections: Second terms ending in June include Suzanne Crowell, Jerome Crowley, Marianne Fritz,
Chuck Kunsman and Bernard Wadsworth. David Hutchings ends his first term. The Council needs new
membership. It is unclear what the commitment will be as the timing of collaboration is still uncertain. Parish
councils will be combined when the collaborative occurs.
The next meeting is scheduled for June 12. Father Jack will ask Scot Landry to discuss the “Rediscover
Jesus” Parish initiative.
