Welcome to Lawrence, Kansas, “The City of the
Arts,” and home to the University of Kansas.
History is intertwined in our everyday life in
Lawrence. You will find our citizens proud to
be Jayhawkers! Founded by New England abolitionists in an effort to insure Kansas would
become a Free State, Lawrence was burnt during Quantrill’s massacre in 1861. It is due to the
resilience of the people then and now that we
have such a great history, present and future.
When other inner cities were crumbling and businesses moved out into the suburbs, our downtown
buildings were still in good shape and historically
correct. Lawrence is one of the largest cities in
the United States that does not have a mall. The
reason is clear once you visit our historic downtown. All the stores you find in the big shopping
centers are located along Mass, or Massachusetts
Street. You will find everything from farmer’s
markets, antique stores, sidewalk pubs and cafes
to upscale clothing and gift shops.
Prior to the establishment of Lawrence, Native
Americans lived in the area. Appropriately,
Lawrence is home to the Haskel Indian Nations
University, the first and largest intertribal
University.
The nation’s first campers followed the Oregon
and Santa Fe Trails in the mid 1800s through

what is now Lawrence and Douglas counties. You
can follow the signs in town and still see visible
traces of these historic routes.
While in town, be sure to visit the University of
Kansas campus. Nationally recognized as an outstanding university, it is our largest employer. More
than 25,000 students call KU home each year. Take
in the Dole Center or one of the many museums on
campus or located throughout the area.
Communities around the area will surprise,
delight and entertain you. Topeka, our state capitol, is less than an hour west of Lawrence. Enjoy
the scenic and historic drive along the KAW
Valley. Stop by the town of Lecompton on the
way and visit Constitution Hall, the first territorial capitol of Kansas.
To the north is the beautiful Missouri River valley with towns of Atchison, the birthplace of
Amelia Earhart, and St. Joseph, where Jesse
James lived, loved and died. Heading south,
Baldwin City and Ottawa will entertain you with
history, rich culture and local charm. Of course,
you have to see what Kansas City has to offer
with all the shopping, restaurants and attractions.
Whatever direction you decide to travel, the
Lawrence/Kansas City RV Park and Resort
can provide you with more information on local
attractions you won’t want to miss.
If you would like more information or directions to any of these attractions
please stop by the Office. Our staff will be happy to help you.
