The Alaska Heart & Vascular Institute is
proud to be the presenting sponsor of
the Alaska Heart Run, benefitting the
American Heart Association. Sunshine
and frosty temperatures welcomed more
than 100 Alaska Heart Institute team
members and thousands of others who
participated in the 2013 Alaska Heart Run
on April 27.
The 35th Alaska Heart Run kicked off
with our very own Dr. Thomas Kramer
firing the starting pistol from the main
ceremony stage. Our volunteer-staffed
booth was right next to the finish line –
a great location for spotting and cheering
on runners and walkers as they crossed
the finish line.
Alaska Heart Institute’s booth was not
easily missed. Many came by to take
their turn answering heart-health
questions and spinning the prize wheel.
By the end of the day, booth volunteers
gave away hundreds of t-shirts, heartshaped pedometers, sunglasses and
water bottles.
Along the route, groups of people, bands
and cheerleaders stood by to cheer for
participants of all ages. It was evident by
the number of Mended Hearts hats and
t-shirts with survivor slogans that heart
disease personally touches many people.
And it’s not too late to join us this
year in supporting the American Heart
Association. Keep an eye out for our
team registration for this fall’s Heart
Walk in Anchorage.

HEALTHY HEART TIP
To keep your heart healthy,
the American Heart Association
recommends two servings of fish
every week. In Alaska we are
lucky to have access to fresh
salmon, which is an outstanding
source of omega-3 fatty acids.
These omega-3 fatty acids help
keep blood from forming clots
and protect against irregular
heartbeats that could cause
a heart attack.
HEART FRIENDLY
CALENDAR
JUNE // National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month
This is the perfect month to set a personal goal to get your
recommended five servings a day of fruits and vegetables!
HIKE ALASKA –
EASY TO STRENUOUS HIKES FOR
EXPLORERS OF ALL ABILITIES
Take advantage of the long hours of daylight by
engaging in heart-healthy activities outdoors. You
don’t have to be an experienced hiker or journey
far to enjoy the Alaska wilderness. Here are a few
of our favorite hikes around the state, ranging
from easy to strenuous levels of difficulty.
WINNER CREEK TRAIL –
GIRDWOOD
(EASY)
The Winner Creek Trail meanders through Chugach
National Forest and has very little elevation gain.
Located just 45 minutes from downtown Girdwood,
you can access the trailhead from either Crow Creek
Road or just east of Hotel Alyeska. Out and back is
about five miles through dense spruce, lush fern and
devil’s club. About halfway through you’ll step onto
a hand-powered tram that will carry you across the
glacial-fed waters of Winner Creek Gorge.

ANGEL ROCKS HIKING TRAIL –
CHENA HOT SPRINGS ROAD
(MODERATE)
HARDING ICEFIELD TRAIL –
KENAI FJORDS NATIONAL PARK
(STRENUOUS)
Angel Rocks Hiking Trail is a 3.5-mile loop
trail that leads to Angel Rocks: large granite
outcroppings near the north boundary of
Chena River State Recreation Area. Hiking this
trail can take just a couple of hours or become
a leisurely day trip. This moderate hike is the
first leg of the Angel Rocks-Chena Hot Springs
Traverse, a more difficult 8.3-mile trek that
ends at the Chena Hot Springs Resort.
This 8.2-mile round trip trail is a
spectacular, yet challenging, day hike.
Starting on the valley floor, the trail
winds through cottonwood and alder
forests, passes through heather filled
meadows and finally climbs well above
the tree line to a breath-taking view of
the icefield and Exit Glacier.
