MONDSHEIN, by the OXFORD Editor Assistant Secretary Printed in the U. S. A. PRESS, INC., Providence, Rhode Island "JEWS IN MEDICINE IN RHODE ISLAND". In the above-entitled article which appeared in these Notes in Vol. 2, November 1957, the name of Dr. Samuel Adelson of Newport was inadvertently omitted from "Appendix A", page 183. T h e name "Samuel Adelson 1923" should appear immediately after "Henry Weyler 1922". Dr. Adelson who, according to all available information, was the first Jewish physician in Newport, also enjoys the distinction of having served as President of Congregation Jeshuat Israel (Touro Synagogue) 1944-1957 and as Chairman of the Representative Council of the City of Newport (1950-2, 1954). "DID T H E JEWS SETTLE IN N E W P O R T IN 1658?" We came to an affirmative conclusion in discussing this question in our April issue. Since then, we have had occasion to examine Rhode Island archives in response to an inquiry concerning Captain CampaSubados of Jamaica whose given and surname have various spellings in the early records of Rhode Island. It appears that his vessel had been seized as a prize by Captain Edward Hull who was operating under a privateering commission granted by the Island Government of Rhode Island and sold by Governor Dyre, Collector of Port at Boston, to Nicholas Easton who, in turn, sold the vessel to Christopher Almy. Captain Subados petitioned the Court of Massachusetts for the return of his vessel but the Court left the case to be heard by the Colony of Rhode Island, a decision which was the subject of a letter from Roger Williams to John Winthrop, Jr., dated the 15th day of the 12th month which at that time was February, 1653. A Rhode Island jury ruled that the vessel was no prize and on March 17, 1656 at Warwick the Court of Commissioners awarded Almy a verdict against Nicholas Easton for restitution of the purchase price. At Portsmouth on October 10, 1656, President Roger Williams was ordered to draw a letter to Nicholas Easton containing the substance of the petition of Captain Subado and ordering an accounting of prize money and issued an order against the further seizing of any vessel. These proceedings indicate that Captain Subados operated in Rhode Island waters from 1653 to 1658 and had personal knowledge of Roger Williams and the virtues of the Colony of Rhode Island as a haven of refuge. It is he who is presumed to have conveyed this knowledge to Jews in the Barbados, who settled in Newport in 1658. " N E W P O R T JEWISH FAMILY NAMES 1902" In our last issue the following names of defendants in the story "They Broke In — T o Pray" were inadvertently omitted from the Newport Jewish Family Name List: 3 4 Rhode Island Jewish Historical Notes Nathan Ball grocer 60 W. Broadway h. 62 do. Michael Bassin, Wagner, Shwartz & Bassin. Jacob Heller peddler h. 22 Tilden Avenue. Moses Wagner Wagner Shwartz 8c Bassin junk dealers 87 Long Wharf h. 20 Elgar Court. Baruch Coren (not in directory) Joseph Dannin (not in directory) Louis Dannin (not in directory) Charles Heller (not in directory) Abraham Siegel (not in directory). In the same issue on the bottom of page 238 and at the top of page 239, the names "Elias" should be deleted. They were not Jews. NEW CHARTERS May 8, 1958 Temple Sinai—Suburban Reform Temple Albert S. Goodman, Allen J. White, Murray E. Miller, Mark Goldberg, Nathan Rosenberg, Jordan Tannenbaum and Irwin J. Kenner. "Furthering by all proper and legitimate agencies and means the dissemination of religious, educational and moral instruction; and for the support of public worship, the building of temples, synagogues and community center; to secure and hold copyrights and plates of books, periodicals, tracts and pamphlets; to publish, print, buy, sell and circulate literature in any and all languages and countries; to receive gifts, legacies and donations from any sources whatsoever; to make gifts and appropriations from any or all of its sources whatsoever; to make gifts and appropriations from any or all of its sources from time to time to carry out the objects and purposes of the association; and to exercise all such power and authority as may be necessary to carry out the purposes and objects above specified, but the purpose and essence of this corporation being purely religious, educational, benevolent, charitable and philanthropic, it is expressly declared that this is a corporation not for gain or individual profit and no dividend shall ever be declared or paid to any of its members and that none of its property, real or personal, shall ever be used or expended except in carrying into effect the legitimate end and aims of its being." JEWISH FAMILY NAMES B y DAVID C . ADELMAN, ESQ. The list for 1900, which follows, is the most accurate thus far compiled for the reason that it was possible to check with the house directory (Blue Book). Local residents will find many street names unfamiliar because many have been changed. In any event, most of them are in the North End. A casual perusal will disclose many a pioneer who opened u p a shop far from the Jewish section in strange surroundings. Such pioneers would take the long journey to market for stock and to the Jewish section for victuals, once a week. As against a gain in the total population of the city of 23% in 1895 over 1890, that of Jewish names was 131%. In 1900, the gain in Jewish names was twice that of the total population, 42% as against 20%. In the paper by Professor Pitterman which follows the list, Tables I, II, and III are based upon naturalization lists found in Rhode Island Jewish Historical Notes I, 1 pp. 11-71 June 1954 and Table IV showing Jewish family names and occupations is based upon lists found in R. I. J. H. Notes I. pp. 72-74, 239-243, II. 86-89, 118-138, 254-282 and III, 5-43. MARVIN PITTERMAN, Associate Professor of Economics University of Rhode Island Long before the days of the American Revolution the first Jewish immigrants reached the shores of Rhode Island. Between 1840 and 1877, another and larger group arrived; and from 1877 to the present, the largest contingent of all came. T h e first permanent Jewish settler came to Providence about 1840. Earliest immigrants to the United States came from the countries of Europe closest to the shores of America—England, France, Spain, Sweden, Germany and Norway. Jewish migration, into the United States and the other Americas until after the Napoleonic Wars, was Sephardic (Spanish-Portuguese) and the period up to 1820 bears their stamp. Following the Napoleonic Wars, Ashkenazic Jews began their mass migration. First came the German Jews and only later did migration occur from the poverty-stricken ghettos of eastern Europe. Jewish migration followed the political reaction of the war period and the transition from feudalism to capitalism. In Germany, Poland, Austria and Russia wherein dwelt the majority of European Jewry political reaction grew strongest. Impoverished and economically ruined by the Wars, which for the most part had been fought in those regions where the masses of Jews were concentrated, these countries let loose on Jews an unremitting series of restrictions and merciless persecutions. In Germany, the hep-hep pogroms of 1818 and 1819 were accompanied by a malicious spread of anti-Semitic literature which called for new restrictions and renewed expulsions. Russia in 1827 instituted its ill-famed recruiting policy of military conscription of Jewish children for twenty-five years which meant practically conversion. Edicts driving Jews out of the border provinces soon followed. In 1845 Poland emulated Russia by making recruitment of Jews a compulsory enactment. Meanwhile these countries were undergoing the transition from feudalism to capitalism. Seventeenth century Prussian kings invited 44 Some Casual Observations 45 wealthy Viennese Jews to settle in Berlin to develop industry and commerce. These Jews became the biggest and ablest bankers, created capital funds and organized foreign loans, connected Germany with world markets and possessed the initiative in developing domestic markets. Germany in its economic development actually dictated equal rights for Jews. Commerce was exclusively in Jewish hands in the Russian-held provinces of Poland. Jews in many areas were the majority of the urban population. They were the only tradesmen. Export of grain, for example, was almost exclusively managed by Jews. Thus, despite pogroms and persecutions, large Jewish communities developed in Warsaw, Odessa, Berdichev and other cities. Along with these changes a general awakening occurred among the Jews. Rising discontent with the status quo and a feverish search for new opportunities led to the stream of migration. Thus by the second half of the 19th century the Jewish masses shook off their lethargy and went off in search of better living conditions. The first immigrants began using this period to subsidize the later emigrants. During the 19th Century Jewish immigration into the United States was made u p of two basic streams: (1) German Jewish immigrants from 1810 to 1870 moved slowly, never very large until 1880 when it almost completely stopped and (2) East European Jewry, which began a little later than the Germanic, but grew intensive in the middle century and immediately after the first large wave of Russian pogroms in 1881 and 1882 developed into great mass movements. Despite the fact that the first important period of 19th Century Jewish immigration into the United States was German in character, it is well to remember other elements also were then present. Beginning in the year 1840 Jews from East European nations—Russia, Poland, Roumania, Austria, Hungary—arrived and settled in Providence. By 1880 the East European Jews outnumbered the German Jews in the United States. In the city of Providence in 1875 the third Orthodox Congregation, The Sons of Zion, was organized composed entirely of East European Jews. 46 Rhode Island Jewish Historical Notes TABLE I Date o£ Entry into the United States of Jews Naturalized in State of Rhode Island to 1906 Year 1845 1846 1847 1848 1849 1850 1851 1852 1853 1854 1855 1856 1857 1858 1859 Total: Number 2 1 0 1 0 1 0 2 1 0 1 0 1 0 0 1715 Year 1860 1861 1862 1863 1864 1865 1866 1867 1868 1869 1870 1871 1872 1873 1874 Number I 1 0 0 0 3 7 4 5 3 11 12 15 7 5 Year 1875 1876 1877 1878 1879 1880 1881 1882 1883 1884 1885 1886 1887 1888 1889 Number 7 15 13 28 14 44 63 79 76 95 132 176 163 136 106 Year 1890 1891 1892 1893 1894 1895 1896 1897 1898 1899 1900 1901 Number 102 80 62 57 32 22 20 19 18 29 29 16 Records of 6 missing. From Table I we observe that the earliest recorded date of entry into the United States of a Jew naturalized in Providence County was 1845. Of the total number naturalized by 1906, 118 or 6.8 per cent arrived between 1845 and 1877. The largest numerical group 815 or 47 per cent entered the United States between 1885 and 1890. Next in order of origin were Austria with 248 or 14.4 per cent; Roumania with 85 or 4.3 per cent, followed by Germany with 66 or 3.8 per cent. One may readily conclude that the bulk of Jewish residents of Providence were by far of East European origin. Table III illustrates that the bulk of Jewish immigrants became naturalized from 1891 onward with the largest number 373 in the year 1893. Perhaps Jews are the most urbanized people in the world. Being overwhelmingly an urban people, the socioeconomic structure of American Jewry was concentrated in relatively few areas of economic enterprise. Today a far greater variety of occupations are entered in primarily because Jews are no longer a people of traders as they were in the dawn of the modern era. 48 Rhode Island Jewish Historical TABLE NUMERICAL DISTRIBUTION BY Compiled Year Population Advertising Agent Agent* Artist Auctioneer Baker Bartender Bill Distributor Billiard and Pool Room Blacksmith Boilermaker Bookbinder Book Dealer Boots and Shoes Bottle Dealer Braids Brewer Bristle Importer Brush Maker Butcher Butter, Cheese, Eggs Canvasser Carpenter Cashier Chazan Cigars and Tobacco Cleaning and Dyeing Clerk* Clothing Coal and Wood Collector Compositor Confectionery Constable—Dep. Table IV shows the wide variety of occupations in which Jews of Providence engaged. The data was compiled by David C. Adelman, Esq., from the city directories in five year intervals (except for the year 1878) between 1850 and 1900. From five different classifications in 1850 the list grew to 50 by 1890 and 136 in 1900. The chart shows the variety of occupations in which Jews participated in our economy. Predominantly most Jews being largely newcomers to a strange land with little or no knowledge of the English language entered those occupations which required little capital and previous training, which accounts for the huge numbers as peddlers and grocers. T h e skilled trades, especially that of tailors and shoemakers, undoubtedly acquired in their native lands, required little capital. No doubt large numbers of German Jewish immigrants came from the commercial class—-German Jewry had few artisans. But among East European immigrants the percentage of artisans was certainly higher than among the Germans. T h e first large wave of East Euro- 52 Rhode Island Jewish Historical Notes peans included very many vocationless elements without any craft or trade. Immediately upon arrival most immigrants had to seek a means to earn a livelihood. Most East Europeans were poor when they first arrived. Wandering from house to house and from farm to farm, often with their entire stock of goods on their backs, the new immigrant became an entrepreneur. Usually the simplest commerce was transacted. Peddlers required little capital. Through ability and hard work a slight margin of return was obtained. At first they carried trade to other immigrants, then to other residents of cities. Farmers welcomed them because they had some money to spend but little opportunity to travel to distant cities. By industry and energetic courage the peddler overcame obstacles of poverty, strange language, and natural suspicion of unknown foreigners. Many bought a horse and wagon to carry on their economic activities, then later opened a general store, or a grocery, dry goods, shoe, clothing, or hardware emporium. Among the East European immigrants were many without craft or trade as a calling. In this enormous mass of vocationless lower middle class the percentage of intellectuals was negligble. This tiny group of educated souls who had reaped the harvest of a good "heder" or even studied Talmud or attended a Yeshiva became the nucleus in producing the modern intellectuals who became the leaders of the Jewish community. Their influence was enormous. Apparently the earliest settlers in Providence up to 1870 had a fair amount of capital since only three individuals listed "peddler" as their occupation. The others were primarily merchants in clothing, cigars, tobacco, hoisery, lace goods and millinery. Of skilled craftsmen, tailoring predominated with only one bookkeeper, one hairdresser, three cap makers, one shoemaker. By 1854 the community had a Chazan but did not acquire a Rabbi until 1877. As larger occupations 1878 shows occupation. in craft and numbers of Jews settled in Providence each year, the increased in numbers and variety. Each period from the rapid increase in peddling as the most numerous No doubt the later immigrants had far less capital, skill business training. Similarly as in other areas, the peddler Some Casual Observations 53 as he acquired more capital opened a variety store which led usually to a second-hand clothing store and finally to a high quality shoppe. Rather early we had Jews in Providence who listed occupations which are considered unique or foreign to Jews. For example, by 1895, there was a bartender, two billiard and pool room operators, a horse dealer, longshoreman, mason, moulder and plumber. As early as 1878 one Julius Horwitz who boarded at 157 Friendship Street listed his occupation as advertising agent. I n 1885, the first lawyer, Daniel W . Fink, occupied an office o n the third floor of 15 Butler Exchange. T h e medical profession appeared in 1878 with Bernard Cohen as physician and Harry Fellman, an optician. T h e first junk dealer does not arrive until 1885 but that year also brought a Jewish artist. I n 1890, the editor of the Pawtucket Times, J. Jacob Rosenfeld, resided in Providence. Few went into manufacturing. T h e immigrant saw no opportunity for advancement as a laborer and while a capitalist called for a surplus for investment. However, many did become proprietors of small establishments- in the retail trades as clothing and tailoring. It is rather interesting to note that by 1905 of thirty-four Jewish residents in Bristol, twelve were rubber workers. Undoubtedly, the Colt's Indian Rubber Company attracted them. In analyzing the economy of our nation at no time was there an independent Jewish economy apart from the general economy of the country. Jews in Providence engaged in the typical occupations urban communities require and provide. In the earliest period, Jews were primarily shopkeepers, men with some capital. As the city grew and prospered, in addition to operators of small retail establishments, many Jews were skilled craftsmen, especially in varied forms of the needle trade as tailors, milliners or cap makers. Many newly-arrived immigrants began as peddlers. As capital accumulated, a few like Myer Cohen in 1890 opened a variety store i n addition to peddling. T h e development of Rhode Island as jewelry center attracted many Jews to this endeavor. By 1900, as new industries developed, for example, we had a telephone operator. It is interesting to note that by 1880, Providence had a Jewish librarian, a book dealer, a 54 Rhode Island Jewish Historical Notes piano dealer (1895), editor (1890), four professional musicians, and fourteen teachers by 1900; all evidence of the entrance into more cultural activities. T h e extent and variety of occupations by 1900 engaged in by Jews merely was a foreshadowing of their further extension as Jews became more Americanized and profited from the educational and cultural opportunities opened to them. As Providence developed into a manufacturing, trade and commercial center, its Jewish inhabitants began to participate in a greater variety of occupations and became a vital and integral part of the economy. When there is need for public prayer, the people gather in a home where they pray. But when death comes, hallowed ground must be bought to bury the dead. And so generally in the history of the Jewish community, the acquisition of a burial ground precedes the purchase of a site for a synagogue. Newport and Providence were no exceptions to this rule. T h e Newport cemetery deed for the use of the "Jews and their Nation, Society or Friends" is dated 1677; the T o u r o Synagogue was dedicated in 1763, almost a century later. RESERVOIR AVENUE CEMETERY2 In Providence such a parcel was conveyed in September, 1849 to Solomon Pareira, Leonard Gavitts [Garits] and Morris Steinberg. It was located in the Town of Cranston on the Providence and New London Turnpike (Reservoir Avenue) described as containing one acre by estimation. In June of 1857, Solomon Pareira, alone, conveyed this lot to the Congregation of the Sons of Israel "as and for a cemetery for the burial of the members of said Congregation Sons of Israel and for no other purpose forever". Witnesses to this deed were A. Wormser and J. R. [Hershorn]. It would appear from the record thus far that the interest of Leonard Gavitts and Morris Steinberg are still outstanding, but a close examination of this deed reveals that this was the same lot of land conveyed to Pareira by Haswill by deed dated October 18, 1849 whereas the deed from Haswill to the three, Pareira, Gavitts and Steinberg, was dated September 10, 1849. Most likely, a reconveyance was made to Haswill who in turn, reconveyed the lot to Pareira alone between September 10 and October 18, 1849. These deeds were not recorded. T h e first burial in this cemetery was that of Solomon Cook, the Vice-President of the Congregation of the Sons of Israel (B'nai Israel) in 1859. T h e Congregation mistook the boundaries of the land conveyed and made burials on adjoining land not owned by them as appears in a deed recorded February 6, 1895 from Josiah H. Whitman to Congregation Sons of Israel and David which recites: iFor list of burials see R.I.J.H. Notes 1:247-261, 2:20. 2R.I.J.H. Notes 1:245. 55 56 Rhode Island Jewish Historical Notes ". . . whereas said Congregation by mistake inclosed a lot of land and commenced a cemetary on land owned by this grantor. Now, Therefore, this deed is the fulfillment made between this grantor and the said grantee to convey to it the lot of land inclosed and occupied by said grantee as a cemetary which was located by mistake upon him, the said grantor's land and also to convey to said grantee other land adjoining said lot." 3 This happy solution of the dilemma in which the Congregation found itself was achieved because of the high regard in which Henry Green, President of the Congregation, was held in the community. There is a sketch attached to this deed which shows that the original lot conveyed to Solomon Pareira in 1849 contained 11,000 square feet and the adjoining lot conveyed by Whitman contained 13,510 square feet, the two parcels combined containing about one-half an acre. T h e fence which enclosed the original lot was donated by Jacob R. Hershorn, the first Secretary and Treasurer of the Congregation (1854) and the son-in-law of Solomon Pareira, its first President. MOSHASSUCK C E M E T E R Y 978 Lonsdale Avenue Lonsdale-Central Falls Chazan Abraham Jacobs in 1870 organized the Congregation Sons of David which purchased a plot of land in this cemetery in the Town of Lincoln (now Central Falls) on December 31, 1870. This Congregation merged with the Congregation of the Sons of Israel in 1874 under the corporate name "Congregation of the Sons of Israel and David". Thereafter the Moshassuck Cemetery plot was used by the Congregation of the Sons of Israel and David for the burial of nonmembers, relatives of members and for charitable cases. Jacob Dimond, father of Leopold Dimond, was originally buried in this cemetery plot in 1878 but in 1884 his body was reinterred in the "proper cemetery" of the Congregation at its expense. In 1885, Louis Green requested permission to bury his father-in-law, Abraham Jacobs, in the Congregation cemetery. Permission was granted for burial in "Elmwood" (Reservoir Avenue) for the sum of $100 or in Moshassuck Cemetery for the sum of $30. He was buried in Moshassuck 58 Rhode Island Jewish Historical Notes Cemetery. In 1892, the Congregation voted to provide a burial place in the Elmwood Burying Ground (Reservoir Avenue) for the burial of members of the Congregation and members of their families. From 1870 to 1897, the Jewish community was considerably enlarged by a great influx of East European Jews, who had organized at least seven traditional Congregations as well as many fraternal and trade societies. These organizations purchased plots in the northwest section of the Moshassuck Cemetery, contiguous to each other, for the burial of their members as follows: September 29, 1875 Congregation Sons of Zion May 7, 1880 Congregation Sons of Abraham November 26, 1886) „ . _ . , „„ ,„„„ (.Russian Congregation ofr TIsrael 0 0 June 22, 1895 C January 10, 1888' March 6, 1889 Baron Hirsch Lodge O.B.A. June 7, 1890 April 23,181889} Roumanian Agudath Zedeck April 4, 1890 December 17, 1892 R. The organization of this Association is an indication of the growth of the community. However, Limerock in the Town of Lincoln was considered too far away from the Jewish community of Providence. After Barnet Fain acquired land in Hillsgrove, Town of Warwick, the Roumanian Aghedath Zedeck, by Jacob Abramowitz, Adolph Aronovitz and Charles Zunckerman conveyed its interest in the land in Limerock to Louis Feiner in October of 1896 and in 1898 Feiner, 72 Rhode Island Jewish Historical Notes Myer' Potoshinsky (by mark) as trustee for Providence Lodge, the Congregation Sons of Zion, Baron Hirsch Lodge, Hebrew Societies of Providence and as President of the Congregation, Harry Goldsmith as President of Providence Lodge #143, Baron Hirsch Lodge by John Kroll, a member conveyed their interest in the Limerock land to one George Deitz. In April of 1897, he conveyed a small piece of land to the "Congregation of Aguat Hackulal" (Agudath Hakolel) and on July 6, 1897, he conveyed a piece of land to the "Congregation Ahawat Shalum", [Ahavath Sholom], reciting a conveyance of another piece to "The Shoemakers Association". On May 7, 1902, Fain conveyed the remainder of the land to "The Congregation Sons of Zion". In 1898, the Congregation of "Aguat Hachulal" [Agudath Hakolel] conveyed its land to "Russian Congregation of Agudar Hackolel" [Agudath Hakolel]. The Congregation of the Sons of Zion made additional purchases of adjoining land in 1899 and in 1904 and in 1905 conveyed a piece of land to "The Lovers of Brothers of Said Providence". In 1910, "Congregation Awath [Ahavath] Achim of the City of Slawuta" by Joseph Garfinkel, President, Louis Rudman, Vice-President, Louis Mover, Secretary, and Samuel Marner, Treasurer, made a conveyance to "Russian Congregation of Israel", reciting that the conveyance in 1905 to "The Lovers of Brothers of Said Providence" was a free translation of the name of the "Congregation Awath [Ahavath Achim] of the City of Slawuta". Garfinkel, Rudman and Marner signed the deed by mark. T h e deed of 1905 was not recorded until November 11, 1909. In the Fain deed to the Congregation Sons of Zion in 1902, Fain signed his name in Hebrew and besides the conveyance to the Providence Shoemakers Association, the deed recited that there had been conveyance of a portion of the land to "Congregation Lenard Azedeck".
