Quiz Night 2015
Our Annual Quiz Night will be held during Term 3. Those who have been involved in previous years will know that it is
a great night of fun, prizes and exercising of the brain cells with a group of friends. For the past three years over 500
people have attended this event, so start organising your team!
The proceeds from the Quiz Night will be used to support our NOW Projects in Timor-Leste and Bathurst Island.
Over the next 12 months, approximately 30 members from the Nazareth Community will participate in these two
projects. All participants are looking to offset some of their costs through fundraising.
We are also looking to source funds to pay the costs
of sending containers to Timor-Leste. The next
container will be loaded with medical equipment,
computer equipment, school furniture and resources
and sports equipment for the Triloka Community.
In partnership with Rotary, we have funded the
construction of a Birthing Clinic, purchased a 4WD
vehicle and also transported four containers of
equipment to the Triloka Village Community. We
have a number of other projects planned over the
next 12 months.

Nazareth Catholic Community Governing Council
I am writing to update you on the membership and work of
the Nazareth Catholic Community Governing Council for 2015.
We are very fortunate at Nazareth to have so many people
willing to contribute their skills, gifts and talents to enrich our
community. Continuing members of the Governing Council are
Dr Vin Thomas, Teresa Lynch, Fr Mark Hanns, Dale West (Chair
of the Stewardship Standing Committee) Mary Dunning, (Chair
of the Faith and Ministry Standing Committee), Michael Dahl
(Executive Officer) and myself (Chair of the Governing Council).
We also welcome our new members Jackie Gates, Silvio
Visentin and Professor Fiona Verity. Michael Honey and Phil
Lewis (Campus Principals) and Darren Bailey (Business Manager)
also attend Council meetings.
Over the coming weeks we will have the Council members
introduce themselves to you through the newsletter. I would
also like to take this opportunity to thank Ann Bliss, our
outgoing Chair of the Governing Council for the wonderful
leadership and wisdom she provided for the past six years
and Jan Chorley who finished her tenure with the Governing
Council earlier in the year. Jan has been involved with Nazareth
for many years and her contribution and insight has been
invaluable. The work of the Governing Council for 2015 will
include the contribution of feedback to, and ensuring readiness
for, the recommendations of the Strategy for Leading Catholic
Education to New Levels of Excellence and developing Nazareth’s Strategic Plan for the next four years. The Council is
supported by the work of the Stewardship and Faith and Ministry Standing Committees to ensure we live out our vision
and mission within a strong governance framework.
For those of you who I have not had the opportunity to meet, I have a son in Year 12, Jesse Neill, who together with
Tayla Hocking, are our College Captains for 2015. Jesse and I feel very privileged to share this opportunity to serve
the Nazareth Community this year. I have been fortunate, as a parent, to have been involved in Catholic education in
a number of ways since Jesse started school. During the primary school years at St John Bosco, I was involved in the
Parents and Friends and School Board. I am a past President of the Federation of Catholic School Parent Communities
and was previously a member of the National Executive of the Australian Parents Council. I am currently a member of
the South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools and the SACCS People and Culture Standing Committee. I am
grateful for the knowledge, friendships and learning opportunities these roles have provided me.
I cannot believe we are half way through the calendar year and I am constantly amazed and inspired by the activities,
diverse achievements and community spirit through the whole continuum of Nazareth from the Early Years to the Wise
Owls and all the stages in between. This is achieved through the partnership between our talented, committed and
gifted staff and our generous, dedicated and compassionate children, young people and the extended Nazareth family.

Sacrament Of Reconciliation
This Wednesday and Thursday evening at 7pm in the OLM Church,
38 students from our Nazareth Community will be celebrating the
Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. To reconcile means
to restore back to the way it should be. This Sacrament is known
as the Healing Sacrament. We acknowledge our wrong-doings
before God and ask for our heart to be made new. No matter
what we’ve done, God’s love never wavers, and there is always the
invitation to come with an open and sorrowful heart to ask for and
receive God’s loving forgiveness.
Through the Religious Education Program each year level covers
elements of the Sacraments through Key Idea 9: Sacraments
and Sacramentality. The preparation for specific Sacraments is
done in partnership with families through a family workbook and
culminates with a student’s Workshop Day at the College.
Below are some of the beautiful prayers that were developed
through the families working with their child:

We ask you to pray for our children and their families. We also
acknowledge that there are many other children in our community
who have either been preparing for or have already celebrated this
very beautiful Sacrament in their own parishes. We keep each and
every one of you in our thoughts and prayers.
Sacrament Updates for Families
Reconciliation - Could families please return the Family Review by the end of this term? They will be distributed at the
end of each ceremony this week.
Confirmation / Eucharist - A note went home on Monday with the Seating Plan for both ceremonies. Please ensure
you received it and keep it somewhere safe. Another note about the Confirmation Ceremony specifically will go home
with the children on the Workshop Day.

The Primary Campus Instrumental Evening
What a memorable evening this was! Jess Joyce, the
Music Director of the College, is to be congratulated
for her capabilities, passion and commitment to our
budding musicians. She has created an amazing
talent base of over two hundred enthusiastic
students, and organised an evening that would have
left every parent filled with personal pride for their
child’s musical passion.
Well done to every student; your joy of learning
is an inspiration to us as educators to ensure that
we continue to provide enriching programs and
opportunities, where individual student talents can
be unearthed and nurtured.
Italian Language and Cultural Expo
As you are aware, all students from Reception – Year 7 learn the Italian language and thoroughly enjoy celebrating this
culture throughout the year in a variety of ways.
All families are welcome to visit the Italian Language and Culture Expo which will be exhibited in the Resource Centre /
Library until the end of term from 8:30am-3:30pm daily. There will be a visitors book located in the Library; the Italian
teachers would appreciate you signing this when viewing the amazing student designs.
As a finale, there will be an Italian assembly next Wednesday, 1 July, for Reception - Year 3 students. This will be celebrated
in the Multipurpose Hall, commencing at 2:30pm.
Year Level Discos
Students from Reception – Year 6, are counting down the sleeps until their disco night becomes a reality! The venue is the
Multipurpose Hall and parents are welcome to stay and enjoy a coffee and chat in the café; it is a great opportunity to have
a little ‘down time” and enjoy the company of others in a relaxed atmosphere.

Vacation Care Bookings
If you are considering Vacation Care during the July holidays, it is important to note that the final day for bookings is

End of Term 2
Students will be dismissed at 12:30pm on Friday 3 July. This is a casual day for all students, with a gold coin donation going
to the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal.

Students will return to school on Monday 20 July.

All families are invited to attend the Reception – Year 7 assembly this Friday, 26 June. This is the final assembly for Term 2
and will be held in the Multipurpose Hall, commencing at 2:15 pm. We hope to see you there!

Secondary News
2015 Year 9 Canberra Excursion
The Year 9 Excursion to Canberra was over five days and four nights. This year we were able to add the National Archives
onto our considerable list of venues visited. The Archives enabled students to gain an insight into the role of the Australian
Constitution, most significantly by being able to view some of the critical documents associated with our federation. The
range of venues visited essentially covers all learning areas students experience at Nazareth Catholic College. In fact, the
visit to the Australian War Memorial will always include a program specifically related to the National History Curriculum.
Students also had the opportunity to participate in ten-pin bowling as a group. There is no doubt students found the trip
to be fulfilling and fun and an experience they are unlikely to forget.
Locations visited included:
 Australian Parliament House - students participated in a tour which took in the House of Reps and the Senate
 The Australian War Memorial – students toured the Memorial and took part in an educational program and in a
memorable wreath laying ceremony
 The Royal Australian Mint – students were taught a little about the history of currency in Australia and how coins
are now minted in Australia, before being given a quick tour of the premises. Some students minted their own
Centenary ANZAC coin
 The National Archives of Australia – students were involved in activities related to government policy, such as the
dictation test associated with the White Australia Policy and also viewed documents related to federation and the
constitution
 The National Museum of Australia – based on the ideas of place and space, the NMA allowed students to
undertake a teacher-guided tour which included audio visual displays and hands on activities
 The National Gallery of Australia – tour guides assisted students in understanding and articulating their views on
some of the best and most expensive art in the world
 The National Portrait Gallery - students participated in a teacher-guided tour of the gallery
 The National Dinosaur Museum – during a night tour students learnt about Australia’s dinosaurs
 Government House – the home of the Governor General was visited to learn about the role of the office and its
history and were lucky enough to meet Sir Peter Cosgrove in person, a rare treat indeed
 The Australian Institute of Sport – Students had time in the hands-on Sportex section of the Institute before being
guided on a tour of the facilities available to the elite of Australian sport
 The High Court of Australia – students visited all three courts at the High Court and were given details about the
history and function of the Court
 The National Capital Exhibition Centre – students were given a stimulating version of the history of Canberra from
its inception as an idea to its development, and participated in a short workshop which asked them to develop their
own ideas to for a new institution in Canberra
 Questacon, the Nation Science and Technology Centre – one of the most popular venues, Questacon gave
students the chance to learn about scientific knowledge and play with hands-on exhibitions, as well as complete a
free fall of more than 6 metres and take on a robot at air-hockey
 Telstra Tower – an opportunity to overlook Canberra at night: sometimes through the fog!
 Mt Ainslie – the highest point around Canberra and an opportunity to look at the geometric layout designed by
Walter Burley Griffin. Two visits required here, due to fog, again!

Wreath laying ceremony at the Australian War Memorial

Term 2 concludes on Friday 3 July at 1pm.
This day will be a casual day for students, who are required to bring with them donations of canned food for the St
Vincent de Paul Can Drive. Further details (particularly relating to appropriate casual attire) have been communicated to
students by Mr Cenko.
Normal school buses have been booked for this early dismissal.
Beginning of Term 3: Please note that Term 3 classes will commence Monday 20 July, with Year 12 students undertaking
Trial Examinations and Subject Workshops during this first week.
Year 12 Trial Examinations and Subject Workshops
The timetable for Trial Examinations and Subject Workshops is currently being finalised and will be distributed to Year
12 students and parents via email. Subjects which have a SACE External Examination scheduled at the end of the year
will have a Trial Examination during the Trial Examination week (with the exception of Mathematical Applications). For
subjects without a SACE External Examination, a subject workshop has been scheduled.
Year 12 students and parents are asked to check the timetable carefully as students are expected to be at school, in
correct uniform, when they have an examination or workshop scheduled.
We encourage Year 12 students to use some time from the two week break between terms to revise and prepare for
these exams. To increase student’s chances of success in this type of assessment, a sound revision plan is needed as well
as a quiet place to study. Students should aim to balance the time allocated to study, rest and leisure across the two week
break, supported by good nutrition.
These Trial Examinations are an important learning experience for Year 12 students. The process of preparing and revising
for the examination, as well as practising the particular techniques needed in the examination room, will be of benefit to
the students as they look forward to the final examinations in November.
During the Trial Examination and Subject Workshop week, the College will provide a supervised study room in NB215.
Students who make use of this facility will be expected to comply with routine expectations for the Study Room.
Learning Conversations – Tuesday 18 August – Student Dismissal 1pm
Families will receive notification for Learning Conversations on the first day of Term 3. This notification will include
the specific instructions for making appointment times with teachers. We strongly encourage students to attend this
event together with their parents or caregivers in order to play an active part in this important conversation about their
learning. Students will be expected to wear the full winter uniform when attending these important learning
conversations.
Please note that students will be dismissed at 1pm on this day, with all normal school buses arranged for this early
dismissal.

Year 9 Italian - It’s a World of Languages
Fourteen Year 9 Italian students had the opportunity to attend a language seminar at Flinders University City campus
along with other South Australian Catholic High Schools. The Nazareth students were given the opportunity to interact
with student ambassadors of different languages. We also took part in a quiz session; the quiz further extended our
general knowledge of the world. We also met and conversed with language experts in different fields, this gave us a great
insight to the benefits of learning languages, as well as possible careers. After the seminar, we ventured to the Central
Market to further explore the variety of other cultures in our own backyard. Overall this experience was very inspiring,
educational and it gave us a great insight to the world of languages.

Dads n’ Lads Night
On Friday night, 90 dads, grand-dads and lads from our Nazareth Community gathered at the Findon Campus to celebrate
Men’s Health Week.
Healthy competitive spirits were on display in the Tug of War challenges, paper plane making and flying, Rubber Chook
Chucking and novelty relay races. The footy was playing on the big screen and others were trying their skill at goal
shooting. Some dads and lads took time out in the “chill out” zone just to chat and to eat their steaming baked potatoes.
Special thanks to our secondary student leaders, Jessie Neil, Adam Daunt, Pasquale Vita and Sam Carmichael who led the
games and activities brilliantly all night.
Working steadily in the background were two health consultants from Corporate Health Group (CHG), offering blood
pressure testing, nutrition advice and wellbeing surveys. Every adult male took away a “toolbox” of health information.
Guest speaker Shane Pill had some great tips for dads and sons in building positive relationships for now and into the
future.
This was a fun night with some good health and wellbeing messages and most importantly an opportunity for younger
males to spend some time with their dads and grand-dads.

An opportunity not to be missed!
Nazareth families are being given the opportunity to host a Japanese student from Kogakuin Junior High School, Japan in
Term 3. The Japanese students are aged between 14 and 15 years old, and will be here from Friday 24 July for a 16 day
stay. If you would like to take up this opportunity of being a host family, please contact Robyn Colwill on
8406 5357 or email robyn.colwill@nazareth.catholic.edu.au This will be a wonderful opportunity for Nazareth students
to learn about another culture and maybe learn a few Japanese words!
Building Fund Donations – 30 June is fast approaching!
Nazareth Catholic College has a building fund. The College spent in excess of $6m on new buildings in 2010 and 2011
and contributions to this fund will help with the future development of the College.
Contributions are on a voluntary basis and therefore any donation over $2 is tax deductible. If you want to claim your tax
deduction in 2014/15 you will need to do this by 30 June. Please contact our finance office on campus, alternatively call

which is being hosted by the Federation of Catholic School Parent Communities.
Professor Carla Rinaldi is an internationally renowned advocate for children and childhood and a world
leader in education for children in the early years.
During 2012-13, Professor Rinaldi was Adelaide Thinker in Residence and is the author of the report
Re-imagining Childhood, The inspiration of Reggio Emilia education principles in South Australia. She is the
President of Reggio Children and the Loris Malaguzzi Centre Foundation and a Professor in the faculty of
education at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
Her expertise continues to influence and inspire children’s learning around the world.
