K10A is a bank of three single phase, 60‐hertz, outdoor, generator step‐up type units. Each unit has a capacity of 50MVA and a voltage rating of 230/13.8kV. Koontz Electric purchased the new transformers from WEG Electric and worked closely with their engineering department and the Bureau of Reclamation to ensure specification requirements were met. Upon arrival to site the transformers were inspected, assembled, processed and tested. This required close coordination with heavy haulers, crane operators, transformer service technicians and plant personnel. Once the transformers were onsite, Koontz was responsible for removing the existing units from service and storing two of them in long term storage. Koontz worked within the Bureau’s Hazardous Energy program to ensure personnel safety throughout the project. Along with the units, Koontz also removed existing cooling water piping, surge arresters and all other associated appurtenances. Once removed, Koontz Electric installed the three new units, including high side jumper bus connections, low side isolated phase bus connections, grounding, and anchoring. The anchor system itself was a custom engineered seismic rated system, which required extensive design and a challenging installation. Once installed, the units underwent final testing and were turned over to the Bureau for operation. Koontz Electric was required to dispose two of the old the old transformers according to all state and federal regulations. The installation will accommodate one (1) 345‐kV transmission line to Northwest Substation and one (1) 345/138/13.8‐kV autotransformer position. KECI installed a 4‐position 138‐kV 1223 E Broadway ring bus. This ring bus is connected to the secondary terminals of the Morrilton, AR 72110 new auto‐transformer. Three (3) of the 138‐kV positions will be for termination of transmission lines to Woodward District and Lodine Project Manager: Paul Zimmerman substations. 138‐kV line disconnect switches are manually operated T 501.354.2526 ext 102 and have grounding switches installed. The transformer tertiary F 501.354.2580 installed will provide VAR compensation by means of shunt reactors and primary station service to the substation. The required tertiary equipment and August 2009 / April 2010 bus work (per Northwest Substation design) will be installed at this time. KECI installed 120/240‐volt ac power systems including panel boards, breakers, dry type, and pad mounted transformers. KECI installed line protection, breaker control, communication, supervisory and fault recorder racks (set and anchor in place). KECI also received, unloaded, moved, stored, installed and tested power circuit breakers and power transformers. KECI furnished, installed and connected all power and communication cables. FREMONT CANYON TRANSFORMER REPLACEMENT CONTRACT NO / AWARD DATE: SCOPE OF WORK: 08CC603670 / March 18, 2008 KECI NO 07‐2186 This project included the design, fabrication, installation and startup of six single phase GSU Transformers. The transformers are grouped together in banks of three, designated KY1A and KY2A, at the Bureau of Reclamation’s Fremont Canyon Powerplant near Alcova, WY. KY1A and KY2A are banks of three single phase, 60‐hertz, outdoor, generator step‐up type units. Each unit has a capacity of 11.5MVA and a voltage rating of 115/66.4kV. Upon arrival to site the transformers were inspected, assembled, processed and tested. This required close coordination with heavy haulers, crane operators, transformer service technicians and plant personnel. Once the transformers were onsite, Koontz was responsible for removing the existing units from service and moving them to storage offsite. This was a challenge, as space at the Fremont Powerhouse is very limited. The powerhouse is accessed by a small tunnel that is over a quarter mile long. Transport trucks were required to back down the length of the narrow, downhill tunnel to offload and pickup of the transformers. Once removed, Koontz Electric installed the six new units, including low side jumper bus connections, grounding, and anchoring. This project also included the installation and termination of control cables from the transformers to the control room in the powerhouse. Once installed, the units underwent final testing and were turned over to the Bureau for operation. Koontz Electric was required to dispose of six old transformers according to all state and federal regulations. Replaced the (6) OCB’s with new SF‐6 gas breakers, also the (6) relay panels and all control cables, relocated (1) dead end tower and (1) switch tower, installed foundations and equipment for (1) new dead end tower and (1) new switch tower, re‐constructed the 2” aluminum bus and strung bus to the new design, installed a new SF‐6 gas breaker, 50 MVA transformer and bus duct to connect to the existing 13.2kV switchgear. Up‐graded the existing control house with new AC & DC breaker panels, new batteries and chargers, new air conditioning units, relay panels and all the required relay testing.
