The Extraordinary Happiness
of Ordinary People
Positive psychology for everyone
Lucie Mandeville
288 pages
Format: 15.2 x 23 cm
Publication: September 2010
An intelligent and accessible book on positive psychology, for rethinking our day-to-day well-being
This is an intelligent book that helps us better understand the positive psychology movement, with a
great deal of humour and in simple language. Positive psychology is a science that arose in the sixties
that is more interested in realizing an individual’s potential than in his hidden wounds and dark side.
Positive psychology is interested in such questions as: Which people are happy and why? How can we
cultivate day-to-day well-being, otherwise known as the “happiness of ordinary people”? This book
presents the most recent discoveries on well-being, offering anecdotes, significant theories and simple
exercises: the happiness formula, identifying personal strengths, words that make a difference, the
miracle question, the gratitude visit, etc. It can help everyone feel better and serve as a tool for personal
growth and psychotherapy. The author encourages us to add “ordinary” magic to our “unremarkable
day” by means of ten disarmingly simple yet powerful acts.
A professor in the psychology department at the Université de Sherbrooke, Lucie Mandeville directs a research
team focussing on humanist and positive psychology. Her career is based on the belief that practical experience
and scientific knowledge are two separate universes and that knowledge alone is therefore not enough.
Currently, she lives with her son and partner in Estrie, in a natural paradise.
The book’s strong points
A personal, funny, touching, accessible, practical and provocative book.
Based on research and written in very readable language.
Helps people better understand and absorb the concept of the “cortical lottery”, that is, How can we
attain lasting happiness?

Rebirth!
Guy Corneau
304 pages
Format: 15.2 x 23 cm
Publication: October 2010
Rebirth! A cry from the heart of a man who found unexpected joy in his fight against cancer. In this
personal, moving, at times very funny book, renown psychoanalyst Guy Corneau shares his experience of
illness.
June 2007: an anonymous hospital patient – Mr. Corneau –has just learned that he has phase 4 terminal
cancer. June 2009: “Mr. Corneau, I don’t know what you did… but it worked!”
The psychoanalyst explains his journey that lasted two years: he underlines the importance of using
traditional medicine in conjunction with new medical practices, including meditation, cell dialogue
practice, and focusing on nature. Corneau does not offer a magic recipe: the struggle against any illness is
a difficult one, the outcome often uncertain. However, he underscores that even at its worst stages, it is
possible to go beyond the feeling of being reduced to an illness, to find psychological and spiritual
meaning in this ambivalent condition, and to use it as a way to celebrate and reaffirm life.
Steering away from preaching and clichés, Guy Corneau humbly conveys his own path, highlighting
encounters with exceptional people who gave him advice and inspired him. This book will guide us – as
patients, friends, or companions that we all are or one day will be – through the obstacles that lie
ahead.
Renown Canadian psychoanalyst Guy Corneau is the author of several books about personal development
including The Best Is Still to Come, L’Amour en Guerre, and Beyond Fear. He regularly offers
international workshops and conferences about psychological issues. Very involved with various types of social
work, Corneau is the founder of the Réseau Hommes Québec and Réseau Femmes Québec. In 1997, he founded
Productions Coeur.com, an organization that brings together therapists and artists to work on personal
development and expression through art. Corneau also hosts his own television show about
psychology. In 2007, he was diagnosed with and survived cancer, which lead him to write
Rebirth.

Bouncing Back!
A creative approach to overcoming obstacles
Dr Daniel Dufour
192 pages
Format: 15.2 x 23 cm
Publication: January 2010
At some point in their lives, all human beings have to face difficult situations (job loss, separation, grief,
illness, etc.), but we all have within ourselves the resources we need to bounce back in the best possible
way. As human beings, to avoid sinking into depression and repeating the same mistakes or the same life
patterns, we have the following “tools” at our disposal:
our emotions, which must be acknowledged, felt and expressed;
our inner knowledge and the ability to create our own future (creative thinking).
By using these tools as a means of giving ourselves Love, we can all bounce back and then move forward,
better than before and with a sense of well-being.
This book offers practical tools to give us the power to fight for ourselves and avoid being victims of
what others think we should do.
Dr. Dufour practices holistic medicine, which treats the causes of illness, not just the symptoms. Born in
Switzerland in 1951, he has been practicing medicine since 1979. His work for the International
Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has taken him to the Middle East and Asia.

The Universal Language of the Body
Understanding human beings
through body movements
Philippe Turchet
368 pages
Format: 15.2 x 23 cm
Publication: 2009
Our body says a lot more than we think. Our gestures, our expressions and our tics are all ways of
conveying our emotions—those we want to convey as well as those we would rather keep to ourselves.
This non-verbal language makes up more than 90% of our communication with other people. Words
themselves only count for 10%. It’s also a universal language, no matter which culture we belong to,
since communication reflexes, embedded in our genes, were passed on to us by human primates
millions of years ago. Are the hands of the person you are speaking to reaching toward you? And what
do those restless knees mean?
The author, a specialist in non-verbal communication, shows you how to decode the body’s messages.
For twenty years, Philippe Turchet has been developing synergology, a discipline that figures out how the
human mind works by reading body language. He is the author of the bestsellers La Synergologie
(Synergology) and Les Codes inconscients de la séduction (The Unconscious Codes of Seduction), both
translated in many countries.

Emotions and Our Health
Better understanding our emotions

Format: 15.2 x 23 cm
Publication: 2009
Where do our emotions come from? What are they for? Whether positive or negative, they all have
their purpose.
Dismissing or ignoring the ones that cause us pain is the same as cutting off a part of ourselves that is
essential for survival. An emotion that we smother keeps on eating away at us without our knowing,
making us depressed and fatigued for no apparent reason. Various physical problems appear and linger
on. How can we come to terms with these painful emotions so as to finally find well-being? Thinking
about them can help.
In accessible language, using examples from everyday life, this book summarizes current scientific
knowledge while showing how closely the body, emotions and thought work together.
Monique Brillon has a Ph.D. in psychology and a particular interest in the energetic exchange between
body and spirit.

Gambling:
Luck or Strategy?
Claude Boutin
172 pages
Format: 15.2 x 23 cm
Publication: August 2010
Everything a gambler needs to know to decide for himself how much of his life he wants to
dedicate to gambling
Written in collaboration with poker and casino specialists, this book is the first to talk in a simple way
about skill in certain games of chance. It examines the actual degree of control that any gambler can
acquire over his favourite game. This book covers popular games while distinguishing between control
over the game and control over winning. In addition, the workings of Texas Hold’em poker are
discussed in a whole new way (for example, the Peter Principle applied to the game, the Anne Boleyn
effect, etc.). The author reveals the lengths to which casinos go to maintain their theoretical
advantage.
Claude Boutin has been a clinical psychologist and researcher since 1989. From 1997 to 2010, he worked
for the Centre québécois d’excellence pour la prévention et le traitement du jeu (Quebec centre of excellence
for the prevention and treatment of gambling) at Université Laval. He has trained hundreds of counsellors
and dozens of trainers in Quebec’s health network in the field of cognitive treatment for problem gambling.
As a specialist, he has participated in numerous conventions, forums and conferences worldwide.
The book’s strong points
The first book to take a scientific look at Texas Hold’em poker, a very popular game.
Answers concrete questions. For example: How can a good poker player protect his advantage over
other players? Do betting experts win more money than occasional players?
Simple, accessible and clear language.
Precise explanations of the most popular games: lotteries, bingo, Texas Hold’em, etc.

This is a very daring essay, a reflection on women getting better as they get older, on their genuineness, their fears,
their splendour and their relationship to life (love, beauty, body, idiosyncrasies, eroticism...). The book presents a
novel and original concept for describing what is hidden behind a totally new reality.
At 60, fairies turn into witches, they say. Nonsense! Just because you are heading into your sixties doesn’t mean you
should let yourself be put into quarantine. The “new older women” are here! And they are nothing like the old
ones. They are hungry and thirsty...for beauty, truth and sensuality!
The author proclaims women’s right to be beautiful. Not with the beauty of a false youth, but beautiful as they are:
with life lines scattered over their bodies, their faces lit up with star-like lines, flesh that wants nothing more than
to be alive...She deconstructs the dictates of beauty and then examines our infatuation with plastic surgery and its
unnatural effects, honestly and without hesitation. She describes faces where plastic surgery has eliminated all traces
of emotion as “autistic faces”.
Since language lags behind reality and change, she suggests “adultescence” as a name for the period after middle
age. Just as we invented adolescence to describe a stage in life, we now need to adapt structures in society and
language to reflect a new kind of aging.
Written in a personal tone and an amusing style, this book is a mirror aimed primarily at female boomers and the
men who love them. With sensitivity and daring and without beating around the bush, the author asks questions
about women’s relationships with their bodies, eroticism and beauty.

Take Control of Your Appetite…
and Your Weight!
Dr. Angelo Tremblay
208 pages
Format: 22,9 x 15,2 cm
Publication: February 2010
Dr. Tremblay is one of the world’s leading experts in obesity research. Here, he tells us his secrets for better
controlling our appetite.
For more than half the women in the western world, managing weight is a daily concern. Women have a tendency to
make themselves feel guilty when they are overweight or having trouble controlling their appetite. They often throw
themselves into weight-loss diets that prove to be 97% ineffective, when they are not downright harmful to health.
Dr. Tremblay helps us to understand better how our body works and why we get hungry at certain precise moments;
he offers solutions for regaining control over our bodies in a way that will lead to better health and well-being, and
greater enjoyment of life.
So what are the obstacles that make appetite and weight control so complicated? And how do we deal with them? In
this innovative book, Dr. Tremblay tackles new factors: fatigue, intellectual work, stress, a lack of certain minerals,
some categories of food, several hormones, and even our relationship with our mother. Knowing which factors
stimulate the appetite and understanding how they operate is a giant step toward regaining self-control. This book
offers a wide range of simple pieces of advice that have been proven to work, as well as long-term solutions for getting
out of the endless cycle of “yo-yo” dieting.
Angelo Tremblay holds a Canada Research Chair in Physical Activity, Nutrition and Energy Balance. A professor in the
kinesiology division of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at Université Laval, he also works with the Chair
on Obesity. In particular, he heads a research group studying factors that predispose individuals to obesity. He contributes
regularly to the media as an expert on obesity control.
The book’s strong points:
A perspective focussed on treating the causes of weight problems, rather than just the effects.
A positive approach to weight loss through appetite control.
A number of unpublished facts on appetite management are presented, such as the link to sleep, intellectual work
and mother-daughter relationships.
Scientific content presented in a friendly way, accessible to the general public.
A number of short texts along the lines of “myths and realities” and “surprising facts” make the book more dynamic.
The author’s considerable credibility as a university researcher.
Many examples and anecdotes drawn from the author’s personal experience.

Good eating habits as part of a healthy lifestyle are the best way to counteract the harmful

ingredients such as probiotics and prebiotics, as well as health supplements like plant extracts,
seem to have the ability to affect it in a positive way.
By choosing a healthy diet, following the advice in this book, we give our body essential tools to
help it better fight against disease.

Parenting
On Behalf of the Child
An aware parent equals a self-confident child
Arnaud Riou
400 pages
Format: 22.9 x 15.2 cm
Publication: February 2010
This book doesn’t just give advice to parents – it helps them build a more meaningful relationship with
their children and improve the quality of their communication. Between “letting the child live his own
life” and “making him do what we think is good for him” there exists another kind of communication,
more mature, more aware, more alive.
According to the author, one thing is for sure: lack of self-confidence in adults and difficulties in
communicating, in expressing feelings and emotions, take root in earliest childhood. Without in any
way making parents feel guilty, he encourages them to act as tutors, with the aim of giving their child a
sense of security as his personality develops. He encourages parents not to base their authority on ideas,
but to decode the real needs of their children, while still respecting their own needs as parents.
By becoming more aware, parents will learn to understand what a child is saying when he yells, refuses
to listen or obey, and doesn’t do his schoolwork. Lastly, this book will show parents how to adopt more
consistent behaviours. Leading by example is not merely the best way to teach a child – it’s the only way.
By turns an actor and director of film and theatre, Arnaud Riou has been a coach, human relations trainer
and lecturer for ten years. Trained in a variety of communication techniques, as well as in martial arts and
meditation, he is the founder of the ACTE teaching method (Approche consciente de la totalité de l’être – a
holistic self-awareness approach). He facilitates professional training courses on relationships and
communication year round and is also a private consultant.
The book’s strong points
This is not a recipe book, but an invitation to become more aware of what parenting means.
The book is based on the author’s experience in facilitating groups over many years.
Written by a self-taught parent, this book encourages parents not to rush to a specialist the minute
they have a conflict with their child, but to learn to decode from within the keys to fluent and positive
communication.

Don’t Be Afraid to Teach Your Teens
How to Behave...
They’re the ones who want you to!
Véronique Moraldi and Michèle Gaubert
272 pages
Format: 22.9 x 15.2 cm
Publication: February 2010
One of the main goals of this book is to advise and reassure parents that it’s all right to teach
your children how to behave. Partly because we can no longer deal with children (let alone
teenagers) like we did fifty or even thirty years ago, but especially because we can’t go back in
time where raising children is concerned. We can no longer impose our beliefs nor force children
to do things without any explanation.
The first part of the book explains what adolescence is and describes the well-known “crisis”,
thus giving parents the keys to face this difficult change more calmly. The second part suggests
ways to handle the crisis: very practical hints and advice for raising children, based on actual
situations parents face every day.
How can we learn to give up our control over our children, to let go of our teenagers so they can
experience things for themselves and make their own way into adulthood? How do we give them
a framework while also giving them some degree of autonomy? What non-negotiable essential
messages should we pass on to them? How do we nurture a positive relationship with our
teenagers, while communicating with them and teaching them to communicate? This book has
answers for all these questions. It shows that problems with our teenagers are often interpersonal
in nature and that these can be resolved through communication and understanding.

And the Wind Blew on the Clay
Benoît Séguin
132 pages
Publication: September 2010
A house at some distance from the road. A stream. Clay. A middle-aged woman and her two daughters,
one still a child, the other almost grown up. The village finds out about this mysterious outsider,
nicknamed the Walker, who makes unusual footwear and works small miracles. But death is also
present, very nearby, getting closer and closer.
It was precisely to experience it in silence that the Walker moved away from the city. A silence that
weighs heavily on her daughters, already in mourning.
But this silence is broken by a neighbour, a church caretaker, a teacher, a deacon, one after the other ...
and especially by the wind known as Vayou, given its name by the pioneer families that put down roots
here after their deportation, scattered along the stream that would henceforth bear its name.
A journey of initiation connecting the living with death. Simply put, a novel with body and soul.
“I can’t say that I’m unhappy; on the contrary, I have a very good life with love all around me. But I’m living
my life the wrong way around, not like in the normal world; I’m only 17 and I’m living the life of a fortyyear-old adult with a daughter to raise and a mother to care for, even though it’s too late for her. It’s way too
much. When my mother dies, I’m going to suffer like I’ve never suffered before, there’s no doubt. But what a
release. What a release. I shudder as I write that word. There is something horrible about it and yet it’s the
only one I can come up with. It describes my situation here and now. I can’t run away from it. I have no idea
what my mother would do if she read it. I think she would understand and she might even be relieved. In
church, I heard her silence saying to me, ‘Don’t turn around, Isadora...’. But I know she would shudder too.”
A high-school literature teacher, Benoît Séguin has published novels and essays that have brought him to the
attention of various media. And the Wind Blew on the Clay is his first book published by Éditions du Jour.

The Spirit of Tai Chi
Feeling that the fish are happy
Lew Yung-Chien
in collaboration with Michel P. Dufour
144 pages
120 color illustrations
Format: 21 x 26.7 cm
Publication: 2009
This inspiring book will be very useful for beginners. For ardent enthusiasts, it will provide the
opportunity to refresh or deepen their fundamental knowledge and perfect their technique. As for
readers whose interest is purely theoretical, it will familiarize them with the basic principles of tai
chi and perhaps encourage them to try it. Lew Yung-Chien has practiced tai chi since he was very
young.
While he was living in Taiwan, he was initiated into the discipline by the great master Cheng ManCh’ing. Lew learned from Cheng what is now called the “Tai Chi Cheng Tsu (form 37)”.
Internal well-being is key to Lew Yung-Chien’s research; he is concerned that people often attribute
an aura of mystery to the practice of tai chi. One of his goals is the demythification of tai chi; the
discipline is not rooted in myths or legends from the past that put it out of step with today’s reality.
His purpose is really to facilitate a meeting between East and West through a practice that should be
within everyone’s reach.
Lew Yung-Chien was born in Shanghai and studied with the great masters of tai chi, notably the
famous Cheng Man-Ch’ing. He settled in Montreal, where he co-founded the Hablutzel & Yung Inc.
studio in 1975. As part of his artistic journey, he devotes himself to tai chi, painting, photography, pottery
and calligraphy.
Michel P. Dufour has been a journalist and editorial writer, director of a public relations service for a
large Canadian manufacturer and an insurance company, as well as a partner in a Montreal public
relations firm. Through his friendship with Lew Yung-Chien, he has become an enthusiastic practitioner
of tai chi.

powers. This book is about the mystical nature of their myths, symbols and ceremonies, as well as
about holistic and energizing medicine. The authors touch on the native people’s ethic, based on
respect for the Earth Mother and the beauty of the world, on hope for a spiritual civilization and
for entry, after death, into the world of the Great Mystery.
Now this reimagined heritage can contribute to our search for meaning and offer elements of
wisdom to a modern society desperate for spiritual, ecological and ethical points of reference.

Coffee Table Book
Fair Trade Around the World
Éric St-Pierre
English edition available
60 000 words
240 pages
Format: 24 x 32 cm
Publication: April 2010
This book of photographs and texts is the most complete work yet produced on fair trade. In it are presented
fourteen different fair trade products (coffee, tea, cacao, sugar, rice, cotton, shea butter, bananas, spices, quinoa,
guarana, wine, soccer balls and handicrafts) from seventeen countries in the South (Bangladesh, Pakistan,
Bolivia, Ethiopia, Mexico, Tanzania, Costa Rica, Mali, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Dominican Republic,
Ecuador, Burkina Faso, Chile, Argentina and Brazil). Its primary objective is to give greater credit to the role and
work of grassroots producers in these markets; it also aims to raise awareness of fair trade issues in the South, as
well as in the North. Each chapter includes a story from the field, a meeting with producers, a short text on the
product in question and a thematic insert on a fair trade issue. You will also find information on:
› The lives and daily activities of families involved in fair trade.
› Each product’s processing chain, from seed to consumption.
› The social benefits of fair trade: development projects, democracy, self-sufficiency, sustainable agriculture, etc.
› Fair trade issues in both the North and the South: certification, organic agriculture, the role of consumers, the
certification of plantations, the role of women, child labour, the increasing variety of products, etc.
Maps, graphs, illustrations and other design elements make your reading more enjoyable and help you
understand the various themes (processing cacao into chocolate, for example).
Éric St-Pierre, a Canadian photojournalist, has worked for large daily newspapers (La Presse and Le Devoir) and
magazines. He has specialized in fair trade since 1996. A world traveller, he has presented four major photo
exhibitions on fair trade and published two other books of photographs on the subject (Des peuples et du café, Nazca
éditions, 2002 and Le Commerce équitable : Quand des hommes défient le marché, Aubanel, 2008).

Format :22.9 X 15.2 cm
Publication: 2009
Known since time immemorial, sung about by poets, adored by emperors, tea is not only the world’s
most consumed beverage, it is also an essential part of the diet of millions of people around the world.
From China, where tea originated, its taste has crossed all borders. It is known for its many fine
qualities and loved for its flavours. Whether it comes from the famous first spring harvests, the
mysterious holy mountains of China or the highest gardens of Darjeeling, every bowl of tea tells a story,
epitomizes expertise, evokes landscapes. Let this book lead you to discover the various “terroirs” of
China, Taiwan, India and Japan, four of the main tea-producing countries.
As you visit each of these producing regions, you will learn about the history of tea cultivation, the
terroir and its typical plants, as well as about tea-processing techniques and how it is prepared locally;
you will discover the different kinds of tea in each region and meet local producers. By better
understanding the industry profile and harvesting techniques, you will learn to distinguish the flavours
of this legendary beverage, to taste it as it should be done and even, thanks to a number of chef ’s
recipes, to offer subtle and delicate dishes to your guests.
Lastly, an analysis of the properties and chemical elements of each tea family will give you more
information on its healthful qualities. In particular and for the first time ever, an exclusive in-depth
study provides details on the antioxidants found and health properties in each tea family!
Inspired by a genuine passion for this legendary plant, the professional tasters from the Maison de thé
Camellia Sinensis (Hugo Americi, Jasmin Desharnais, Kevin Casgoyne and François Marchand) visit teaproducing countries every spring, searching for locally grown teas. The expertise they’ve acquired over the years
and ties forged with growers have given them access to some exceptional teas of superior quality that have never
before been exported outside their province of origin.
Camellia Sinensis is now recognized as being one of the most prestigious tea houses in the world.

The Shroomies
In and out of the frames!
Fecto
64 pages
Format: 23 x 23 cm
Publication: September 2010
One beautiful morning, author Fecto woke up with a new idea : mushroom-shaped comic book
characters. That day The Shroomies (a.k.a. Les Champis) were born!
Endearing, funny and enthusiastic, the Shroomies are peaceful beings that love to have fun. Naive
and overflowing with imagination, the Shroomies don’t believe in limits. Watch them challenge the
laws of physics, or pass freely between their frames. In short, speechless sketches, they will win you
over before you can even read their three balloons.
So come and meet Myké, the taller of the two Shroomies. He is the clever one, with his long
eyebrows that say much about his feelings. Myké is always there to help, and tends to tap his foot
when things go well.
The smaller Shroomie, Myké’s best friend in the world, is Myko. Myko is very curious and well
intentioned, but not always very succesful... and he sometimes looses his lovely freckles, something he
doesn’t appreciate at all.
On sunny days, the Shroomies are joined by Maggie the flower: Myko’s secret flame.
The Shroomies’ optimism is contagious! It is impossible not to fall in love with their naive charm and
their touching humour. So follow them in and out of their frames, and share their adventures!!
PS: The Shroomies do not talk! No translation needed to dive into their joyful universe!
