Welcome to Lake Country
Kevin Costner, eat your heart out. Just 225 paved highway kilometres northeast of
Edmonton lies the real Waterworld - the Lac La Biche Region.
We are within easy access to 150 lakes, many with beach side camping, cabin facilities,
and white sand beaches. Hit the waves for some fast-paced water sports, cruise the
trails for biking and hiking splendour or just kick back and relax for an evening around
a warm campfire.
But it’s not all about the trails, trees and waves the Lac La Biche Region also offers
visitors the chance to explore some of Western Canada’s oldest history. Lac La Biche
is one of the oldest communities in Alberta, with more than 200 years of history built on
generations of multi-cultural influence. The ethnic mosaic of the area includes the
language and culture of French, Arabic, Italian, Ukrainian, German and Russian
descent. The area’s Aboriginal population is mainly Cree, and includes two First Nation
communities and two Metis Settlements.
Lac La Biche, Plamondon and the surrounding county are steeped with interesting
history, scenic beauty and rich cultural diversity. So bring the family, bring the boat, bring
your fishing gear, and bring your sense of adventure to the Lac La Biche Region. We
promise that you will bring plenty of happy memories home with you.

The possibilities are endless.
You can check out all your camping options and locations online at
www.LacLaBicheRegion.com. There are spots for either a family weekend, a romantic getaway,
or a back-to-basics camping adventure. All you have to do is pack up your stuff and head to

lapping waves at one of our many lakeside campsites will greet you when you rise.

you will come back to again and again.

Lebanese settlement celebrates a century
Lac La Biche is
celebrating the 100th
anniversary of Lebanese settlers coming to
the area July 2-4 – and
you’re invited. The
homecoming festival
promises great entertainment, great food
& great fellowship.
North America. The
building is still standing
but has been moved
from the original site
and has been converted
into a rental duplex to
help defray the costs of
the new Al-Kareem
Mosque, finished in
1997.
Lac La Biche is one of
the first permanent
Lebanese settlements
in Alberta, if not all of
Canada.
The
first
records of Lebanese
living in Lac La Biche
appear about 1905. Before that Lebanese would come
through the Lac La Biche portage on their way to the
Arctic as peddlers and fur traders. The Lebanese,
when they first settled here, opened small trading posts
where they would trade goods for furs from the
Aboriginal People of the area.
The Lebanese became firmly established in the Lac
La Biche community in the 1910s and 20s, setting up
businesses and raising their families here.
The second large wave of Lebanese immigrants to
Lac La Biche arrived in the ‘30s and ‘40s. These people
were not recent immigrants but had been living in
places like Slave Lake and Barrhead. Most had arrived
in Canada in the 1920s or before. They were the first of
the Lebanese to become mink ranchers.
The biggest wave of Lebanese arrived in Lac La
Biche in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s, mostly from two
towns in Lebanon, Kherbet Rouha and Lala. Most of
the Lebanese living in Lac La Biche now, are
descendants of these people. In fact a large
percentage of the 50,000-60,000 Lebanese who live in
Alberta are descendants of these first arrivals in Lac La
Biche. Most of the Lebanese arriving in the ‘40s and
‘50s started as mink farmers and a few became
shopkeepers. Like any farming, keeping mink was a
family business and that meant that parents and
children spent a lot of time together. This resulted in
most of the generation born in the ‘50s to the ‘70s
being able to speak Arabic reasonably well and a good
grasp of both the Canadian and Lebanese way of life.
In 1958, to encourage and help maintain this grasp
of language and faith, the Lebanese of Lac La Biche
built what is the third Mosque and Arabic school in
The second, third and
fourth generations of the
Lac La Biche Lebanese
have become business
people and professional
of all kinds. Many have
moved away to pursue
other opportunities in larger communities but many
have stayed and have become some of the main
movers and shakers of Lac La Biche in the tradition of
Lebanese pioneers like Alex Hamilton.
Everyone is invited to come and share our
celebrations July 2-4 at the recreation grounds in
downtown Lac La Biche.

Plamondon
Culture, Heritage … and Mud Bogs
On July 28, 1908, Joseph Plamondon
and a small group of French settlers
arrived in north-eastern Alberta from
Michigan, intent on starting a new life.
A century later, the place they established is now a bustling little community of 350.
The hamlet of Plamondon, located 20
minutes west of Lac La Biche along
Highway 55, may be small - but that
doesn’t mean it’s quiet! From the Cabane à Sucre in February to the
hugely popular Mud Bog weekend in August, scarcely a week goes by
without some sort of community event taking place.
For those who want to learn more about
the history of this unique community,
there’s the Plamondon Museum, which
features wall-to-wall displays of times
gone by, and Parc Heritage Park, which
presents the history of Plamondon in
miniature replicas. With a motel, a hotel,
and campgrounds nearby, there are many
first-rate places to stay and even more
friendly people to meet. So visit
Plamondon and enjoy le goüt de la
bonne vie - a taste of the good life!

Take A Stroll
If you’re the type who loves to go for a walk in pristine boreal forests or alongside glistening lakes,
you must make the trip to the Lac La Biche
Region! Our trail network will impress any hiking buff!
One of the area’s more popular trails is a
paved 15 kilometre walking path stretching
from a quiet subdivision just east of the Lac
La Biche townsite, along the Lac La Biche
lakeshore, passing beside the golf course
and extending all the way to Sir Winston
Churchill Park.
Plamondon also boasts a similar stretch of
trail around the hamlet. For those looking for
a little bit more of a rustic trek, there’s hundreds of kilometres of mapped back-country
trails within the Lakeland Provincial Park and
Recreation Area. While shorter trails at Sir Winston
Churchill Provincial Park are a treat for a little walking
getaway or a Sunday afternoon stroll.

For years, the lakes, beaches, forest, culture and
history of the area have been a destination for
thousands of visitors. And in recent years, many of
those visits have turned into long-term stop-overs.
With so much lakeshore and beauty, people are
bringing their families to the region to set up a
permanent footing. We hope you’ll consider joining
them. Rural subdivisions offering all the amenities
of municipal living are popping up at record rates.
Lakeshore cabins are all the rage, and getaway
retreats hidden deep in the boreal forest are the
pride of many new families.
Local realtors and developers are ready to accommodate new residents, but it is the clean air, unobstructed views and hospitable community which
really do the selling.

Summer
isn’t the only
season in the
Lac La Biche
Region that offers a
great time for recreation enthusiasts. We
assure you that there’s just as much fun to be
had by playing “on” our lakes in the winter as
there is playing “in” our lakes in the summer.
Activities in our winter months take the chill
out of the cold season’s air.
For those who love to fish year-round, there
are plenty of great spots to go ice fishing. A
little line, a few hooks and some bait are all
you need to catch a keeper! It’s a great way to
spend the day with the family, without packing
life jackets or worrying about anyone falling
overboard!
For the land-lovers, the snow covered trails
of the Shaw Lake Cross Country Ski circuit
offer kilometre after kilometre of natural
beauty. If a little more speed is to your liking,
the area’s lakes and back country offer
snowmobile trails for every type of rider.
More structured events during the winter
months include the popular Winter Festival of
Speed and the Lac La Biche Kinsmen On The
Pond minor hockey tournament. Both events
take place in early March and turn the frozen
surface of Lac La Biche lake into a true winter
wonderland.
As you can tell, having fun in the Lac La
Biche Region during the winter is “snow”
problem!
