where Tommy Neeson and Steve Speirs are as he takes his final strides. Steve, who has a nice lead in the Grand Prix but has been doing
some ultra-endurance racing, was hoping for a longer event!

Update on Weight Watchers Walk- It – I
want to bring to everyone’s attention that
over 22,000 people participated in this
RRCA sponsored event. 51 running clubs
hosted a 5K walk in an attempt to keep
people moving. Hopefully this annual
5K walk will grow every year. Through
the partnership with Weight Watchers
International, the RRCA has been in
a position to promote the Join a Club
message on behalf of their members. The
Join a Club message encourages people
to join their local running and walking
clubs and to participate in local events
following the Weight Watchers Walk-It
Day 5K events. Hopefully, our club will
get some new members and help keep
people moving.

Speaking of walking, did everyone
notice what our Race Walkers
have accomplished in major events
nationwide? I would like to give special
recognition to our seventy plus guys, Dick Kole, Steve Durrant and Buddy Levitin. It just
goes to show, you are never too old to keep moving. Our walkers are always there to lend
a hand in volunteering as well.
I would like to thank Brian Sagedy, our race director for the 34th ERR. With over 1000
finishers, this is the 2nd largest club owned event. Brian once again provided participants
to a beautiful course in Portsmouth. The Striders would like to extend a heartfelt goodbye
to Kevin Murphy. I understand ERR was the last local race where we will see Kevin
helping out. Kevin is moving to the beautiful city of San Diego. Many of you have seen
him volunteering at J & A events, Rock & Roll ½ marathon and other Striders events. Did
you also know that he volunteered at kickball and basketball events too? The local sports
world will definitely miss him.
Hopefully while you are reading this you are thinking Tuesday’s in July. Can you say
SUMMER SERIES? I think of all the events the Striders put on this has to be the most fun.
Members, it only costs a $1.00 entrance fee to get into the Botanical Gardens. So come on
out. We have a distance for everyone. Too hot? Come volunteer. We have lots of positions
in the shade. Check the race flyer for each week’s description. Shoot me an e-mail if you

5k is up and back on the boardwalk. Race

A long standing summertime tradition
continues at the beach. Both runners
and multisport athletes can compete and
enjoy the day and postrace festivities.
Bring the kids too, as there is a one mile
event for them and many kid activities. For
triathletes, this is an excellent opportunity
to race in the ocean.

2011 ANNUAL STRIDER PICNIC**
**This will also include a General Membership Meeting
at Noon – NEW electronic voting procedures will be
discussed.
DATE – Saturday, August 6th
TIME – Activities begin late morning after your run or after the
Strider Mile (approximately 10 a.m. with Food beginning at 11
a.m.). Picnic ending at 3 p.m.
LOCATION – Lake Christopher – From Indian River Rd, head
south on Kempsville Rd approx ½ mile. Turn left on Quarry
Lane and follow it to Lake Christopher Dr. Turn left and parking
is on the immediate right.
FOOD – BBQ Ribs, Fried Chicken, Pork BBQ and Rolls, Baked
Beans and Coleslaw provided by Beach Bully. Also bring a
dish to share (something simple - bag of chips, cookied,
brownies, etc). Adult beverages, soda and water are
provided.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE
TIDEWATER STRIDERS HALL OF FAME,
CLASS OF 2012.
Nominations are being accepted for election into the Class of 2012 Tidewater Striders
Hall of Fame.
Individuals nominated for membership in the Hall of Fame class must have been
members of the Tidewater Striders for a minimum of ten (10) years. Individuals may
use a self-nomination process or be nominated by other club members, the latter having
been members of the Tidewater Striders for at least five (5) years. A maximum of five (5)
members will be inducted.
Nominations must be received by November 19, 2011. Specific directions for the
nomination process are presented below and must be submitted electronically. Individuals
may be nominated for their accomplishments in competition, volunteerism, and/or
profession-related endeavors.
Please consider individuals who have been very successful in competition, and/or who
have contributed significantly to the growth and continued development of the Tidewater
Striders, and/or have actively promoted running, walking, and triathlon participation and
competition as members of the Tidewater Striders, and contact them to ascertain whether
they are willing to be nominated for this prestigious honor.

on developing the system. Jean anticipates
that the amount of time required to serve as
the Elections Chairperson will be about an
afternoon.
Programs
Do you have an idea for a meeting or
meeting location? Would you be willing to
make all the arrangements for a program
from finding the location and arranging
a speaker. Topics can be anything that is
relevant to running or multi-sports. If you
have some ideas and are willing to help
please contact the club president, Jean
Phelan.
Race Volunteers
If you’re not running help out on race day
as a course marshal, registration or at the
Finish Line. If you are running, you can
still help at packet pick-ups for the larger
club events. Make 2011 the year you
volunteer more at Club events.
For Club Races, volunteers are needed
for all aspects of the event from race
registration to course set-up and take-down
along with the finish line. Check out the

an upcoming race.

The Athlete’s Kitchen - Exercise, Injury & Creatine: Updates from ACSM

Each year, more than 5.000 health
professionals gather at the Annual Meeting
of the American College of Sports Medicine
(ACSM; www.acsm.org). At this year’s
meeting (Denver, June 1-4, 2011), exercise
physiologists, sports medicine doctors, and
sports nutritionists shared their research
and offered updates. Here are three updates
that might be of interest.
The power of exercise
“Exercise is medicine” is the slogan for
ACSM’s public health campaign to teach
people the importance of living an active
lifestyle “Exercise is better than medicine”
would also be a good slogan! According to
Dr. Karim Khan of the University of British
Columbia, lack of physical activity is the
biggest public health problem in the 21st
Century. (I know, I am “preaching to the
choir” because you are already active. But
I’m sure you have friends and loved ones
who spend too much time on the couch.
Please pass along this message along to
them.)
We know that exercise can reduce the
risk of heart disease, certain cancers,
dementia, and other diseases of aging.
But what most people don’t know is 16%
of North Americans will die from low
fitness/sedentary lifestyle. That’s more
than the 14% of people who will die from
“smokerdiabesity” (smoking, diabetes, and
obesity combined). (1)
If exercise is so good for us, why are so
many people failing to exercise regularly?
And how can we get them to exercise by
choice? Incentives work in the short term.
That is, employees who get a discount on
their health insurance premium will initiate
an exercise program. But in the long term,
people maintain an exercise program if it
gives them pleasure, makes them feel good
about themselves, improves their mood,
and offers friendship.
Wanna-be exercisers should take weight
loss out of the equation. That is, if they are
exercising just to lose weight, what happens
when they reach their goal? They’ll still
need to keep exercising to maintain that
fat loss, so they had better start a program
they are interested in enjoying for the rest
of their lives!
Just as MDs monitor blood pressure and
weight, they should also monitor physical
activity. Thanks to ACSM’s Exercise is
Medicine campaign, doctors are now being
encouraged to prescribe exercise to their
overfat, underfit, (pre)diabetic clients,
telling them how often, how hard, and how
long to exercise. This written prescription
has been shown to help improve exercise
compliance.
Nutrition for injuries
Unfortunately, part of being a runner seems
to entail being injured; no fun. Runners
with injuries should pay attention to their
diet. If they are petrified of gaining weight
(yes, petrified is a strong word, but it seems
fitting to many injured athletes who seek
my counsel), they may severely restrict
their food intake. One marathoner hobbled
into my office saying, “I haven’t eaten in
two days because I can’t run…”
While injured runners do require fewer
calories if they are exercising less than
usual, they still need to eat an appropriate
amount of fuel. Injuries heal best with
proper nourishment. For example, if
you have had surgery (such as to repair
a torn ligament), your metabolic rate
might increase up to 20%. Using crutches
increases energy expenditure by 5 to 8%. If
a wound happens to get infected, metabolic
rate can increase by 50%.
When injured, you want to eat mindfully,
so that you eat enough calories—but not
too many calories. Before you put food into
your mouth, ask yourself: “Does my body
need this fuel? … Will this food provide
nutrients to help my injury heal?” Your
mind may want excessive treats to comfort
your sorrow, but the nutrient-poor cookies
that help you feel happier for a moment can
contribute to undesired fat gain that will
increase your misery for the long run.
If you have ever had a broken bone, you
have seen first-hand the muscle wasting
that occurs when, let’s say, a leg has
been in a cast for 6 to 8 weeks. The good
news is, according to Dr. Stuart Phillips
of McMaster University, muscle strength
and power returns quicker than muscle
size. You can minimize excessive muscle
loss by eating adequate protein. The
typical (and adequate) protein intake is
0.5 g protein per pound of body weight
per day ((1.1g/kg/day). During recovery,
a better target is about 0.7 g pro/lb (1.6
g/kg). For a 150-pound athlete, that’s 75
to 105 g protein for the day, an amount
easily obtained through your diet. Simply

choose a protein-rich food at each meal and
snack throughout the day to help maximize
healing and minimize muscle loss.
Creatine and health
Creatine has been shown to enhance
performance in sports that require short
bursts of energy (including sprinting, soccer,
ice hockey, weight lifting). The question
arises: Is creatine harmful? According
to Eric Rawson, PhD of Bloomsburg
University in PA, creatine is safe. Although
critics have tried to implicate creatine in
athletic events that resulted in death, other
factors were involved, such as excessive
exercise in extreme heat (2, 3, 4).
The NCAA and other sports organizations
discourage the use of creatine in teenage
athletes. Teens who take creatine while
their bodies are growing will never know
how well they could have performed with
simply a good sports diet and hard work.
The question arises: Will athletes who take
creatine be enticed to try other ergogenic
aids, such as harmful and illegal steroids?
The answer is unknown.
On a daily basis, the brain uses creatine
to help us think and process. (Thinking
requires quick energy, and creatine
enhances that metabolic pathway.) Taking
creatine supplements can increase brain
creatine by 4 to 9%.
When the brain is tired, as happens with
sleep-deprivation, creatine may be able to
enhance brain function. For example, sleep
deprived rugby players who took creatine
improved their accuracy when throwing a
ball (compared to those who did not take
creatine). The effect was similar to if they
had taken caffeine, another alertnessheightener (5).
Creatine might be helpful for athletes
who suffer a concussion. Research
with animals suggests taking creatine
pre-concussion enhances recovery (6).
Granted, few athletes know when they will
get a concussion, but anecdotes tell us that
hockey players who routinely take creatine
(and have higher brain creatine status than
athletes who do not take creatine) report
enhanced recovery. In certain medical
situations (such as muscular dystrophy,
Parkinson’s disease), creatine can also have
a health-protective role.

TIDEWATER STRIDERS BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
Minutes for May 4, 2011
Jean Phelan called the meeting to order
at 6:37 pm at Virginia Beach Neptune
Festival Office. All board members were
present except Bob.
Minutes of the April 2011 Board meeting
were approved as written.
President’s Report:
Jean reported that Mel Williams was
reviewing the Policy and Procedures and
brought to her attention that the board must
approve all committee chairs each year.
Jean has tried to contact all committee
chairs to see if they would like to continue
in that role.
Jean asked if the board felt that we needed
a website committee or if Steve Speirs
served that role as the web master. The
group discussed this role and the need to
update the Policy and Procedure for the
web committee. It was recommended that
we ask Steve if he would be the chairman
of the website as well as the web master.
One of the items that has become a concern,
is the number of requests the striders receive
to post information about events that are
not local and requests to post group fund
raising events on our website. About a year
ago part of the executive committee met
with Ada and Steve concerning the website
and e-rundown. At that time it was decided
that we would only post information about
events from Williamsburg south through
Hampton Roads and the bordering North
Carolina cities. Major events such as
Richmond Marathon, OBX Marathon will
be included.
Jean pointed out the need to update the
Election Committee Policy and Procedures.
Now that we send more items via e-mail
we need to change the election process.
Vice-President’s Report:
Rich reported that the he has met with
individuals from the City of Hampton
concerning the usage of Fort Monroe as
a race venue. This was a very positive
meeting that may open another race
venue to us for the Distance Series. Due
to this meeting, Dan to sent out a survey
to all participants of the Distance Series
to gage the interest of holding one of the
Distance Series events at Fort Monroe.
Unfortunately, many members have the
perception that Fort Monroe is too far to
travel for a race. However, for any members
in the Norfolk, Portsmouth or Chesapeake
it would be closer than Ft. Story. Those of
us that have run in an event at Fort Monroe
thought it was wonderful.
Rich reminded all of the Adapt the Highway
this month (Sunday May 15, 2011).
Treasurer’s Report:
Dan Edwards reviewed the April financial
reports.
Old Business:
Dan reported that the plaque for the 64th
street water fountain has finally been
installed. He sent pictures to Mr. Benedetto
this week.
Dave provided an update on New Energy
and the Freedom Half Marathon
New Business:
Picnic: The picnic will be held at Lake
Christopher on Aug 6, 2011.
Committee Reports
Membership Committee:
Dan reported on the membership transition
to Race-it. He is happy with the progress
and he and Bob are working out the trouble
spots.
Race Committee:
Dan presented the updated race committee
policy and procedures for additional
discussion and vote. The board passed the
updated policy and procedures 11-0.
Dan reported on the availability of used
chips from multiple sources. At this time he
has many options and does not need to rush
to purchase from a specific vendor.
Dan reported that the committee is
researching the D-Chip options from a
couple of companies.
Scholarship Committee:
Dan presented information on the
candidates selected by the scholarship
committee to receive one of the 2011
Strider Scholarships. Dan made a motion
that the board approves the six scholarships
as put forth by the committee. Motion
passed 11-0.

Games Track & Field Championships at
Hermitage High School, Henrico, VA. In
the 1500 meters race walk Tom Gerhardt,
Jordan “Buddy” Levitin, and Steve
Durrant competed. Strider walkers Steve
Shapiro, Bill Lipford, Cindy Williams,
Judy Paschall, and Lori Sherwood served
as the Senior Games’ certified USATF race
walk judges for both events. An article and
photographs were submitted for publication
in the Rundown.
Twelve Strider walkers competed in the
We Walk! Minnesota, a walk only race
in Saint Joseph, Minnesota, on May
21. Tom Gerhardt competed in the 50K;
Lori Sherwood in the Marathon, and two
Tidewater Strider Teams made up of Steve
Durrant, Bill Spruill, Bill Lipford, Kathy
Nash, Rebecca Garson, Pat Thomas, Linda
Janssen, Cindy Williams, Judy Paschall,
and Debra Hovatter in the Half-Marathon.
An article and photographs were submitted
to the Rundown.
Walk judges were provided to monitor
walkers at the Elizabeth River Run 10K, a
Walking Grand Prix (WGP) race on May
28, 2010 (24 walkers, 13 were Striders).

“Dewey’s Ducks” walking team’s use of
the ERR to participate in the Joint USATFOutrun the Sun, Inc. “Virtual, Yet Real

the Memorial Scholarship 5k which will
benefit many of our runners in the future
so if you’re not running, please volunteer.
Volunteers especially are needed for
the Youth portion of the Series on
July 12th and 19th. There will be youth
relays made up of two person teams for the
2k distance. On the 19th, the young runners
have the opportunity to predict their time
for a mile run. Extra help is needed to help
the younger runners record their predicted
time. Come on out and enjoy the fun!

Running safely on the road requires
common sense. Miss RM continues to be
baffled by runners who leave common
sense at home when they hit the road.
And the “I am Runner; Hear Me Roar”
method doesn’t work. If it’s runner vs.
vehicle, the runner rarely wins. It’s not
about winning anyway. It’s about being
safe and being courteous.
It’s time once again for Miss Road Manners
to remind runners exactly what common
sense is. Take notes, please. Class is in
session. It’s time for Miss Road Manners’
Rules of the Road
3. No headphones…period. The only
safe place to wear them is on a treadmill.
Worried about being bored? Then tune in to
your surroundings. You never know what
you’ll hear.
4. Be extra mindful at intersections.
Drivers are looking for oncoming cars, and
may not realize you want to cross the street.
Stopping for a light or traffic isn’t going
to hurt your running. Being hit by a car,
though, will certainly cause bodily harm
and zero mileage.
5. Have ID with you. Be prepared for the
unexpected.
1. Runners need to be seen by drivers. Run
against traffic and watch the oncoming
traffic. If you’re running in a group, run
in single file as cars approach and do it
quickly.

Tidewater Strider Walkers Compete at USATF Southeastern
Masters Track & Field Championships

On June 10 & 11, the 41st Annual
USATF Southeastern Masters Track &
Field Championship was held at Saint
Augustine’s College in Raleigh, NC. The
College hosted the regional USATF event
at their recently completed track and field
facility. In previous years the meet had been
held at North Carolina State University.
Six Strider walkers: Paula Graham, Linda
Janssen, and Steve Durrant from Virginia
Beach, with Bill Lipford and Steve Shapiro
from Hampton, drove to Raleigh. They
were joined by Rebecca Garson from Afton
making a strong Tidewater Striders walker
presence at the meet. Strider runners should
consider competing in future Southeastern
Masters T&F Championships. Running
events are offered at 1,500 meters, 5,000
meters, and the 10,000 meters.
Two walking events were held during
the meet: the 1500 meters race walk late
Friday afternoon, and the 5000 meters
race walk on Saturday morning. Friday’s
high temperatures where challenging. The
measured temperature on the track, as the
1,500 meters race walk began at 4 pm, was
108 degrees Fahrenheit. Fortunately, an
overnight storm caused the temperatures
to fall into the mid-seventies by the time
the 5,000 meters race walk began at 7:30
Saturday morning. Each Strider walker
competed in both the 1,500 and 5,000
meters race walks and each finished in one
of the top three places of their respective
age groups. Twelve medals made the return
trip home to Virginia.
One of the highlights of the meet was
watching former South African teenage
bare foot runner Zola Budd. Zola Budd
Pieterse, now married with three children,
age 45, and wearing shoes competed in
the 5,000 meters run which immediately
followed the 5,000 meters race walk. She is
well known for the incident in the 1984 Los
Angeles Olympics when she got tangled up
with USA runner Mary Decker in the late
stages of the 3,000 meters. Decker fell to
the infield injuring her hip and was unable
to continue. Budd who was leading at the
time, faded to a seventh place finish. At this
Southeastern Masters meet, she was the
first woman finisher – and second overall
finisher – in the 5,000 meters in a time of
18:34.40. She currently resides in Myrtle
Beach, SC, and is a volunteer coach at
Coastal Carolina University.

Race Walking in State AAU District Meet

Resembling an entourage of experienced
athletes in major competition, on Saturday,
June 11, eight girls and four boys, submidgets (age 11) and midgets (age 12),
were escorted by a meet official to the
starting line for the 1500M race walk.
The venue was Landstown High School in
Virginia Beach with a year old rubberized
track second to none. It was the first heat of
the first race at the start of a two day event
in the 8th Annual Invitational Virginia State
AAU Track and Field District meet. Twelve
hundred boys and girls had registered to
compete.
The young athletes were greeted by Tony
Vaughn, USATF Virginia Youth Chair
and official race starter; USATF Certified
Race Walk Judge, Tidewater Strider Judy
Paschall, serving as Chief Race Walk
Judge; and Striders Diane Zinn and Buddy
Levitin, certified officials and race walk
judges.
And like the Virginia Senior Games in
Richmond one month earlier, where Chief
Judge Steve Shapiro reviewed the rules of
race walking with “athletes” in their 50s,
60s, and 70s, Judy explained the same
rules to pre-teenagers, some of whom were
in their first race walk competition. Like
instructions were given to ten boys and
seven girls in the second heat classified
as sub-youth and youth, ages 13 and 14
respectively.
Mr. Vaughn had commented to me earlier
that one of the complaints USATF officials
receive is that when inexperienced race
walkers get to the national level they have
not been told about the two violations in race
walking that may lead to disqualification:
loss of contact with the ground and bent
knee. The youngsters listened attentively
as Judy explained the rules in simple
language. Once the race began, however,
execution was more difficult.
Cautions for running, the major problem
observed, were given by the judges using
yellow paddles. Some competitors took
heed of the warnings. Others did not, and
in instances of flagrant violations, those
cautioned who continued to run were
disqualified. For most, the
1500M race
walk was a learning experience for coaches
and athletes.
In spite of heavy overnight rain, the track’s
drainage system prevented water from
settling anywhere track and field events
were held on Sunday. The first track event
of the day was the 3000M race walk, which
drew seven girls and three boys, all subyouth and youth teenagers.
Track etiquette was noticeably improved
on the second day, and the technique of
the athletes more in evidence. Three of
the young ladies had been trained by Rich
Higgins from Hampton.
We had an opportunity to chat with Rich’s
daughter, Aleiza, whom we met at Dave
McGovern’s clinic in Williamsburg two
years ago. Race walking for only a few
years, she has an outstanding record in

major competition. In the 2010 Virginia
Association’s USATF 1500M Race Walk
Championship held in conjunction with
the Strider Mile at Tallwood High School
in Virginia Beach, she finished first among
women race walkers.
Even more noteworthy is that only Tom
Gerhardt, the fastest Strider race worker,
had a better time.
Aleiza won a national race walk
championship and has received a full
scholarship to Marian University in
Indianapolis, Indiana, where she will
provide the skills to implement a race
walking program.
Remember her name. You will be hearing
more about her in the years ahead.

Many of you may recall that the Tidewater
Striders hosted their 45th convention
right here in Norfolk. The 2011 RRCA
Convention was held last weekend (May
12th - 15th) in Fredericksburg, VA, hosted
by the Fredericksburg Area Running Club
and the Marine Corps Marathon. Of
particular interest, two of the speakers
were Tidewater Strider members: Brenda
Barrera and Mel Williams. And, Dan
Edwards was re-elected to a two year as
an At-Large member of the RRCA Board
of Directors. Thank you to Brenda and
Mel for your support of the RRCA and
congratulations to Dan on your re-election.
The RRCA is always held on the same
weekend as a local race and in 2011 the
race was the Historic Half Marathon. 27

that took place in Fredericksburg.

5k Finishers: 827
Race Summary & Highlights:
Way to grow, the Virginia Beach race
grew from 430 finishers in 2010 to
827 fniishers in 2011. There were 361
finishers in the Girls under 12 age
group alone, easily the largest age
group. Congratulations to all the girls
and their coaches for completing their
goal of finishing a 5k.
Fittingly, the top two finishers were
‘girls’. Nicole Dewey of Norfolk won in
19:25. Second overall was 14 year old
Inessa Corney of Tasmania, Virginia in
21:29. On her heels, was the first male,
Kris Ellingsen, in 21:30. The Third
female and fourth overall was Megan
Doty.

Runners Can Walk, Walkers Cannot Run
by Heidi Sleasman
What does registering in the Walking Division of a race really mean? It means that you
are a walker and must walk the entire race because walkers cannot run. Are you going to
run and walk the race? Then you need to register as a runner. Do you think that you might
jog some of the race? Then you need to register as a runner. Are you going to walk all of
the race and then sprint across the finish line for that great memorable finish line action
photo? Then you need to register as a runner.
Webster’s Dictionary states that waking is, “to go along or move about, on foot, at a
moderate pace, by placing one foot firmly on the ground, before lifting the other.” Another
way of saying this would be, “walking is moving from place to place with one foot in
contact with the ground at all times.” This differs from running and jogging where the
individual moves by leaping from foot to foot which provides an airborne phase where
both feet are off the ground at the same time. Note that the knees are not mentioned. They
may be either bent or straightened while moving from foot to foot while “walking”.
The purpose of having walk judges is to ensure the fairness of the competition for all
walkers. Walk judges are assigned to each of the Strider Walker Grand Prix (WGP) races
to specifically observe individuals registered as walkers to insure that they do not run
or jog—have an airborne phase—while walking the race. A walker observed by a walk
judge to be running or jogging (having both of their feet off the ground at the same time—
airborne), at any time—even for only one or two steps—will have their race results moved
to the appropriate running age group category.
“Race walking” differs from “walking” with regards to the action of the walker’s knees.
Rule 232 of the 2011 USATF Competition Rules states. “Definition of Race Walking.
Race Walking is a progression of steps so taken that the walker makes contact with the
ground so that no visible (to the human eye) loss of contact occurs. The advancing leg
must be straightened (i.e., not bent at the knee) from the moment of first contact with the
ground until the leg is in the vertical upright position.”
Walkers must follow the rules of Race Walking ONLY when participating in races that
are sanctioned by the USATF or IAAF. Only two races currently hosted by the Tidewater
Striders are USATF sanctioned races: (1) The Virginia Association USATF 1500M Race
Walk Championship (held concurrently with the Strider Mile) in August, and (2) the
Virginia Association USATF One Hour Race Walk Championship in November.
Webster’s definition of walking is used in all other Strider Walking Grand Prix (WGP)
races.
Just remember ~ runners can walk, walkers cannot run.

came together at Town Point Park in
Downtown Norfolk to participate in the 8K
Run, 2-mile Walk, and the 1-mile Fun Run.
Followed by a Birthday Party to celebrate
CHKD’s 50th Anniversary.
6th Annual RunWalk for the Kids was a
great success again this year with more
than $100,000 raised for CHKD. The
event went off without a hitch thanks to
the RunWalk Committee, the countless
volunteers and Race Director, Rob
Levinsky, the Tidewater Striders for their
great support of this event and all of the
sponsors who supported us.

This year more than 120 teams were
created – the award for the team with the

While searching for results, Steve Scudder
comes across many race sites. Below are
two interesting race descriptions. Both
races were in June but they will be back in
2012...I think. While neither race is huge,
they will appeal to hardcore runners and
those that desire a challenge...Any Takers?

The Mangum Track Club Boogie Marathon
& 50-Miler is in Ellerbe, NC.
The following excerpt was taken from their
race website, theboogieraces.com
“MARATHONERS BEWARE: This is not
your normal marathon. This is all rural, not
a city marathon. The course is not certified.
You will be in the middle of nowhere all the
time with no porta-potties, no splits, no mile
markers, no spectators, and late in the run
possibly even no other runners. There are
only 6 houses on the course and they have
dogs. Aid stops are over 5 miles apart, so
you will need to carry a water bottle. If you
decide to quit, there are no pick-up vans,
so you will either have to walk to the aid
station or hitch a ride with somebody. The
race will start at 6 pm and the temperature
will probably be about 85 degrees with
little shade. Darkness comes about 9 pm
and there are no street lights. You will need
a light for the reasons cited in the waiver.
If you need to be catered to every couple
of miles along the course or worry running
in the dark, perhaps you should not come.
We really have seen everything listed in
the waiver except the polecats and they are
there too. The dropout rate among veteran
50-milers is usually 40% or so. Think long

and hard before you enter this event. If
Lao-tzu were to give advice about this event
he would say, “Come with no expectations
and you will not be disappointed.”

My Secret for a Successful Race

I am not a morning person. Most races are
in the morning which is a problem for me.
Coupled with pre-race jitters, rising early
causes my stomach to shut down and my
intestines to speed up. Needless to say I go
into most races without much fuel to burn.
The good news is that I think I have found
a solution to this problem. The bad news
is that the cure is very expensive and time
consuming. My secret is to travel west
across time zones for a race.
On Sunday May 15th, 2011 I competed in
the USA Track and Field 15 km Race Walk
Championships in Riverside, California.
I flew in on Friday afternoon and kept
myself on EST through race day.
On
race morning the weather was as close to
optimal as it can get for me, low 50s and
overcast with only a small breeze. The
occasional drizzle wasn’t distracting. The
race started at 7:30 am California time
which felt like 10:30 am to me. I woke up
quite early without and alarm and managed
to eat a little breakfast. Race jitters weren’t
high as work and school had kept me from
training as much as I needed to hope for
a competitive time. This race was just
one stop on a week long vacation for my
husband and me. Since this race was a
USATF master’s racewalk championship,
I still had a chance of medalling in my 5
year age group even if I couldn’t hope to
be among the top finishers. In the weeks
preceding the race, I had revised my goal
times from 1:45 to 1:52 to “anything under
2 hours”.
The gun went off after instructions from
the USATF chief judge and the pack
quickly surged ahead. The leaders were
Trevor Barron, an Olympic hopeful and
Tim Seaman, an Olympic veteran. I kept
reminding myself that I was here to walk
my pace, not someone else’s. It didn’t take
long before I was walking alone with most
walkers ahead of me and a few behind. The
course was an asphalt 1.7 km loop around
a lake. The scenery was nice but the often
fissured and potholed surface required
concentration to keep from tripping or
twisting an ankle. I was going to have to
walk 8.77 loops to complete the 9.3 mile
distance. Judged racewalks are always on
loop courses to allow the judges to watch
for compliance of the two IAAF rules
which are - No visible (to the judges' naked
eye) loss of contact with the ground must

take place and the advancing leg should be
straightened (not bent at the knee) from the
moment of first ground contact until it is
perfectly upright. Competitors who are
in violation of the rules as observed by 3
judges are disqualified from the race.
As the laps ticked off, I was feeling good
and had actually overtaken a couple of
people that had gone out too fast. When
passing the DQ board I noted that I did not
have any rule violations posted which gave
me the confidence that I could continue
at my current speed or faster. Walking
alone for that distance can get boring so to
keep my spirits up I decided to visualize
walking with one of my Tidewater Striders
teammates for each of the remaining
laps. This strategy seemed to work well,
especially with 3 laps to go when I started
feeling fatigued. On my final lap I was
able to find the energy to speed up a bit and
finished in a time of 1:48.34. Although I
did not finish among the top women, my
time allowed me to collect a gold medal
and national champion patch for finishing
first in the women’s 45-49 year old age
group.
Crossing time zones may not be the most
cost effective or efficient way to ensure
a decent race performance but worth
some consideration. I have to admit
that competition at the national level is
a humbling experience but I enjoy the
opportunity to test myself against the best
walkers in the country. For any walkers,

PLAN TO JOIN the Tidewater Striders' New Energy Youth 2011 Running Team
New Energy is an informal youth group training together to improve their times in road races as well as their
performance in track and field and cross-country events sanctioned by the USA Track and Field (USATF)
and AAU . Motivations vary from those who simply enjoy running, to those who are goal oriented and
recognize the need to train in order to perform well in races . With its group approach to running practices,
New Energy provides a fun, sociable forum for running preparation and development .
New Energy welcomes all youth runners, ages 6-16, regardless of ability . Practices are informal, and
participants are encouraged to attend as many as possible . Runners must have a good pair of running
shoes to avoid injuries . Uniforms (singlet and shorts) and Warm ups ( Hoodie and Pants) can be purchased,
but are optional . Membership in the Tidewater Striders is required by the third practice in order to
participate in sessions and compete on a team basis in Track and Relay teams . The cost is $10 .00 per year
or $15 .00 for two years . The Team participates in road races held in the Tidewater area, which are part of
the Youth Grand Prix 1-mile series and are sponsored by local organizations such as school PTAs . Check

schedule will be part of the program and can be found under ‘Youth Programs’ on our Web Site.
Coaching is provided by volunteers who are Tidewater Striders members . Again this year, Angelo Celesia
will provide leadership for training . Other running enthusiasts/parents will also assist .
New Energy provides youth runners and their families an enriching environment which can be a building
block to the youth runners' future . In the past, New Energy runners attended National Cross Country and
Track and Field Championships around the Country . Many previous New Energy runners are currently
participating with high school and college teams where they have excelled in Cross Country, Indoor and
Outdoor Track and Field with All State and National recognition . New Energy has produced numerous
All-American medalists, State Champs and one National Champion in Cross Country .
The New Energy Team practices will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5-6 p .m ., at Mt . Trashmore
(Kid's Cove area facing South Blvd .), beginning Thursday March 3, 2011 . Visit the Striders Web Site and

with and for the benefit of member hospitals/ foundations and the children they are privileged to serve. With the
help of the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals in their community, children of all ages and backgrounds can receive
treatment for diseases and injuries. Children’s hospitals are also on the front lines of research, education and

In 1999, this race was held for the first time, and was called the “Brave Heart Run-Swim-Run .” Allen Stone – a local Navy
SEAL and friend of the organizers – competed and won the 20-29 male age group . Tragically, this was Allen’s last race .
Shortly after, he died in a SEAL training accident . Accordingly, the race committee decided to rename the race to honor our
fallen friend and local hero . We hope you’ll participate! With Allen’s enthusiastic zeal for life and outgoing personality, we
know he would have welcomed you!

This is a Tidewater Strider Grand Prix Event!
Race proceeds go towards endowing two Tidewater Striders’ memorial scholarships which are awarded each
year to deserving youth members. One scholarship honors Tom Bashara and one honors Pamela Edwards.
ENTRY: A $10 contribution to the Scholarship Fund provides your race entry and one (1) ticket for great raffle
prizes. For contributions of $20, $25, or $50, you will get three, five or twelve raffle tickets, respectively.
Additional raffle tickets will be available on the same schedule: 1 for $10, 3 for $20, 5 for $25, and 12 for $50.
Golden Runners and Race Pass users may run for free but must purchase raffle tickets to participate in the
raffle. Note: There is a fee of $1 per person for entry into Norfolk Botanical Garden.
REGISTRATION: Preregistration forms must be received no later than July 23; we recommend mailings be
postmarked no later than July 20. See mailing address on registration form. Race day registration starts at

COURSE: Scenic, flat and fast Norfolk Botanical Garden 5K course, with splits each mile and one water stop.
The registration, start, finish, results and raffle will take place in the parking lot adjacent to the Baker Hall
Visitor Center.
RAFFLE: Thanks to our generous sponsors, the raffle contains many significant prizes with a total value of
over $5,000. Prizes include: Strider Golden Runner Memberships; complimentary entries to local and regional
major road races; gift certificates from running and athletic establishments, local restaurants, sports therapy
professionals, home professional services, and many more. The list of raffle prizes is updated periodically on
www.tidewaterstriders.com. There will be a Barter Zone available for raffle prize recipients who wish to
negotiate an exchange with others.

RESULTS: There are no trophies or awards, but top finishers will be recognized, including:
5K Walk: Top 5 Female and Top 5 Male finishers overall, and the Youngest and Oldest finishers.
5K Run: Top 3 Female and Male overall, and Top 3 Female and Male finishers in 5-year age groups.

The Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund has been established to support endowed scholarships that honor
memorable Tidewater Striders. As part of the Tidewater Striders Scholarship Awards Program, each year the Fund will
provide two awards of $2,000 or more to a college or university student athletes based on academic and athletic
achievement, community service, and club involvement. In the past two decades, this scholarship program has awarded
more than $100,000 to deserving student athletes.
Note: The Tidewater Striders is a 501(c)3 corporation; contributions to the Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund are
tax deductible to the extent of existing law.

The Seashore Nature Trail 50K at
First Landing State Park
3rd Annual -- Saturday, December 17, 2011
Race starts at 8:00 AM
ENTRY FEE: $80 before November 19; $100 from November 20 to December 17. Entry fee for Tidewater Striders
members who have a Golden Runner membership is $40 before November 19, and $60 from November 20 to December
17. Golden Runners must register by mail. Eighteen (18) is the minimum age to enter.
LIMITED NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS: The race field is limited to the first 300 registered runners and to the first
30 registered Tidewater Strider Golden Runners, after which the regular registration fee applies to Golden Runners.
REGISTRATION: Register by mail or online. For registration by mail, complete the form on the reverse side. For
online registration, go to www.raceit.com. If the race registration quota is not filled, runners may register at packet pick
up on Friday, December 16 or on race day starting at 7:00 AM. The race sold out in 2010.
COURSE: This 50K (31.07 mile) race is run on the trails of First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach, with a total of
approximately one mile at the start and finish on a paved road. The two-loop course is lined with trees and follows hardpacked dirt trails through a variety of ecosystems. The main trail is mostly flat, while side trails are slightly hilly with
some tree roots to negotiate in certain sections. Wooden bridges are also found on several trails.
FLUIDS AND FOOD: Various fluids and snack-type foods will be provided both prior to and after the race. Two aid
stations on the course, each passed multiple times, will provide fluids, sports drinks, and carbohydrate/protein snacks.
TIME LIMITS: The race starts at 8:00 AM with a time limit of 8.5 hours. Sunrise is about 7:05 AM. All runners should
have completed the race in 8.5 hours, by 4:30 PM. Sunset is about 4:45 PM.
HOST HOTEL: The Virginia Beach Resort Hotel and Conference Center (2800 Shore Drive), an all-suite hotel with
balconies facing the Chesapeake Bay, is the host hotel (www.virginiabeachresort.com). Rates are $79 per room per night
for two persons. To get this rate, you must contact the hotel at (757) 481-9000 and ask for the Tidewater Striders room
rate. Rooms must be booked by November 18, 2011 to get this discounted rate.
DIRECTIONS TO HOST HOTEL AND RACE START: From I-64, take Northampton Boulevard (Route 13) to the
Shore Drive exit; turn right and continue on Shore Drive approximately 3½ miles. The host hotel is on the left just past
the intersection with Great Neck Road. The parking area for First Landing State Park is also on the left about 1 mile
beyond the hotel at the blinking stop light. Please car pool on race day if possible.
PACKET PICK-UP: To avoid the race day rush, please pick up your race packet on Friday, December 16 at the
Virginia Beach Resort Hotel and Conference Center between 4:00 and 8:00 PM. Alternatively, you may pick up your
race packet on race day morning at First Landing State Park beginning at 7:00 AM.
AWARDS: The following awards will be presented: (1) First three overall male and female finishers; (2) First three
submasters (age 30-39) male and female finishers; (3) First three masters (age 40 and above) male and female finishers;
(4) First three senior (age 50 and above) male and female finishers. Overall place winners are ineligible for submasters,
masters and senior awards; masters place winners are ineligible for senior awards.
AMENITIES: An embroidered vest or zippered mock shirt will be provided to all participants. Please note your size on
the registration form. All finishers will also receive a medal, hat, and paperweight with the race logo.
INCLEMENT WEATHER OR NATIONAL SECURITY: The Race Director and the Tidewater Striders reserve the
right to modify or cancel events as needed in the interest of safety or access restrictions to the venue. No refunds can be
given in the event of modification or cancellation.
TRAIL RACE ETIQUETTE AND RACE REQUIREMENTS
1. Stay on the designated trails for the course.
2. Numbers must be worn and visible on front of body at all times during the race
3. Pacing by unregistered runners is not allowed.
4. Littering may be grounds for disqualification.
5. The trail is open to other runners, walkers, and cyclists. Be courteous.
6. No dogs are allowed to accompany runners.
7. If you can, please carry your own water container to avoid use of cups and possible littering.
8. If need be, stop to help others in need.
9. In places of heavy two-way running traffic, keep to your right as far as possible.
10. Please carry any trash (cups, food wrappers, etc.) with you to trash bags on the course. Leave the park cleaner
than you found it.
POST-RACE PARTY A post-race party and awards ceremony will be held at the Virginia Beach Resort Hotel and
Conference Center from 4:30 to 7:30 PM. Beverages and pizza will be provided to all runners and volunteers. Awards
will be presented about 5:30 PM.
