A Fond Farewell to the Senator
John “Jack” Hitchcock Fitzpatrick, 88, a passionate
and community-minded Berkshire resident for over
50 years, died peacefully at home on July 23, 2011.
Many of you will remember the “Senator,” along
with his wife Jane who survives him, as the evercheerful owners of The Red Lion from 1968 until
their daughter Nancy took over in 1993. For more
than 25 years, Jack enjoyed playing Santa Claus at
The Red Lion on the Saturday before Christmas.
A life-long public servant and member of the
“Greatest Generation,” Jack served in Europe
during World War II, receiving a Bronze Star for
valiant efforts behind enemy lines. Always an
active participant in community affairs, Jack was a
diehard Republican and served the First Berkshire
Senate District from 1973 to 1980; his many lasting
friendships from his Senate years crossed both
sides of the aisle.
WINTER 2011-2012
Senator Fitzpatrick received many honors from
the Commonwealth, including the Golden Dome
Citation for distinguished service and honorary
doctorates from several colleges and
universities in New England. In August
2010, the Town of Stockbridge named the
town green adjacent to The Red Lion Inn
for Jane and Jack Fitzpatrick.
Jane and Jack Fitzpatrick are widely
known for their philanthropy. The
Boston
Symphony
Orchestra,
Berkshire Theatre Festival, Norman
Rockwell Museum, Jacob’s Pillow,
Shakespeare & Company, MASS
MoCA, the Mahaiwe Performing Art
Center, The Colonial Theatre, and
The United Way are among scores
of organizations and individuals in
the Berkshires and beyond to receive funding from
them personally or through their foundation. Jack
was proudest, however, of creating hundreds of jobs
at Country Curtains, The Red Lion
Inn and Blantyre (owned
by daughter Ann). He
felt enormous affection
for and gratitude toward
the employees who were
partners in his success.
We are all the richer for
having known Jack, and
we dearly miss his largerthan-life presence.
VOL. XLIV, NO 1
Dear Friends,
Greetings from Stockbridge! We’re still digging
out from our record snowfall during the last
week of October, and if that is any indication we
are looking forward to a white, New England
Christmas and a fabulous ski season this year!
We look forward to seeing the many families that
have made The Red Lion Inn and Stockbridge a
part of their holiday traditions – not just for our
sumptuous menus, but also for the community
celebrations, entertainment and decorations that
make the Inn sparkle. All of us at The Red Lion
Inn wish you and your families a joyous holiday
season and New Year.
November and December will hold lots of activities
and entertainment for all ages – not just in our lobby
every day, but also great holiday programming at
the Berkshire Theater Festival, Shakespeare & Co.,
The Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, The Mahaiwe
Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, and
Barrington Stage. With such terrific year-round
entertainment choices, and low off-season rates,
winter is a perfect time to come visit, relax by the
fire and enjoy our hospitality.
Once the snow melts and the beautiful weather
of spring arrives, there will be great happenings
at the Inn. First, as you may know, we’re building
an additional 17 rooms in an adjacent historic
home called the Chauncey Curtis House. A slight
departure from our normal rooms, these will have
flat screen TV’s with Blu-Ray players, iPod docks,
fast Wi-Fi and an eclectic contemporary style. We
expect to have all the work done by summertime,
so book yours now!
Chef Brian Alberg will be making his annual
appearance at the James Beard Foundation in
March, and then bringing that excitement (and
great food!) back to the Main Dining Room for a
special meal for all to enjoy.
Hope to see you here during the winter… our
guest houses are perfect for families and a great
way to experience life in a New England village.
The summer crowds are gone and the Berkshires
are yours to explore. Many museums/cultural
events have exciting programs, with more and
more exciting venues opening for year round
entertainment.
Thank you again for your loyalty throughout the
years, and we look forward to seeing you again on
your next visit.
Happy Holidays!

Suggestions
from
The holidays can be a stressful time, overloaded
with company and cooking. The last thing you need
to do is spend time poring over an extensive wine
list or searching through thousands of labels at
your neighborhood fine wine store. I have selected
four food- and wallet -friendly wines that we have
been enjoying at the Inn lately. Ask for them at your
local wine market, or stop by the Inn and try them;
they’re perfect for a holiday season meal.
Cheers,

In February, Nancy Fitzpatrick was honored
as a winner of the Massachusetts Cultural
Council’s 2011 Commonwealth Awards,
marking exceptional achievement in the
arts, humanities, and sciences. Nancy
was recognized for her work as founding
Chairman of the Berkshire Creative Economy
Council, which she helped develop from a
start-up organization to a dynamic engine of
economic development. Through her role as
a respected leader, businesswoman, creative
thinker, and advocate of the arts, Nancy
has brought creativity’s role in the vitality
of our region to the forefront of economic
planning. For the Fitzpatricks, such civic
involvement is all in the family; Nancy’s
mother Jane was also honored with the
Commonwealth Award in 1993.

“Inn” the News
Red Lion Inn owner Nancy Fiztpatrick was featured in BerkShares boost the Berkshires in Massachusetts, a BBC
story broadcast on September 6, 2011, about BerkShares, the local currency of the Berkshires. The Inn is one of
approximately 400 local businesses that accept BerkShares… Executive Chef Brian J. Alberg was profiled in
the January/February issue of RoadRUNNER, a magazine of Motorcycle Touring & Travel. In Riding and Eating
in the Berkshires: Does This Food Make Me Look Fast?, Brian shared his slow-food/farm-to-table philosophy;
a backroads motorcycle tour of Berkshire farms and food and beverage producers; his favorite cultural spots;
and his recipe for Maple Cured Pork Tenderloin, made from pigs raised on his own farm… On August
4, the Boston Herald featured the Inn’s “Roaring Ramble Package,” a similar culinary
motorcycle tour led by Brian, in the Action Plan column of its Travel
section… The December 1, 2010 edition of Smart Meeting
mentioned The Red Lion Inn in a story on the
