Friends of the Library will host an August Book Sale, from Thursday
August 20 through Saturday August 22. We have received so many
generous donations of gently used books, the shelves are overflowing.
As we near the opening of school we are particularly excited about
the number of high quality children, youth, and young adult books
that are coming in.
Diane Hughes, a Friends volunteer for many years, will join veteran
Martha Martin in organizing and preparing an outstanding book sale.
Diane will take over duties from our longtime Book Sale Chairman
and Board Member, Meril May. Meril, who co-chaired the annual
book sale earlier this year, is taking a much-needed break from book
sale duties. He is, however, remaining on the Friends of the Library
Board. We are so grateful for the countless hours Meril and Martha
have spent coordinating and guiding volunteers in support of the
library. We welcome Diane into the family of people who love the
written word and assist in fund raising for the library.
The Reading is
Fundamental program
finished the school year with a visit
to the library. Third Graders from
Burroughs-Mollette Elementary
School and Goodyear Elementary
School came to the library for a fun
filled guided tour with Librarian
Karen Larrick, given a choice of two
new books to keep, and stories. On
Monday, May 11, Evy Wright led the
children in songs and games, and on
Wednesday, children listened to
stories told by Betsy Stafford and
Nathan Russo (in photo). The
children were excited with their new
books and were encouraged to
participate in the great summer
reading program, now in progress at
the library.

Friends of the Library
From the Desk of FOL Board President
It’s been a great year so far for the Friends of the Library. The 28th Annual Tables of Content Dinner
in March was a huge success. Friends Treasurer Joe Shinnick presented a check for $15,000 to
Brunswick Library Manager Lori Hull, for the purchase of new materials for the library. Steve Croft
introduced guest author Charles Martin (photo page 3), who talked about his new book, Water from
My Heart. At the end of the evening, everyone appeared to have been inspired and well fed, and the
Friends of the Library raised over $4200! Many thanks to the hard working team of volunteers who
helped to make the evening a success, including Chris and Denise Emmer, Margie Young, Joe
Shinnick, Gigi Stratton, Steve Oldaker, and Steve Croft.
Joe Shinnick has stepped down as board treasurer for the Friends, and Richard Young has gallantly
taken Joe’s place. We thank him for the many hours of service he has given. Our esteemed Board
Member, Meril May, is handing over the baton as co-chairman of the Book Sale to Diane Hughes. I
know how thoroughly and meticulously both men have performed their duties, and we are so
grateful for their help. It is an honor and pleasure to work with the Friends of the Library. We make a
great team!
I am looking forward to a good summer, and I hope to see you around the library!

What Two Things are Responsible for the Success of the Friends Store?
# 1, Volunteers Our Friends Store has not only grown in size, but in the number of volunteers. Thanks
to those listed below, we are able to keep the store open SIX days a week from 1:00 until 4:00.
Volunteers have wonderful ideas to increase sales and access to the public. Now on most First
Fridays, the Friends store is open until 8:00. In addition, two book carts are outside for the public to
buy books from. On 2nd and 4th Saturdays, you will find volunteers at the Brunswick Farmers Market
from 10:00 until 2:00.
#2, Donations All the books in the store come from your generosity. We continue to have a
tremendous selection of books, thanks to you. Please keep donating them! You can bring donations to
the Brunswick Library and drop them off at the Circulation Desk. If you have a large amount and need
for someone to pick them up from your house, just call Margie Young at 912-634-9826, and she will
arrange for them to be picked up. Remember, we are tax exempt, so you can get an IRS form at the
circulation desk.
The Friends are always looking for volunteers to run the store. If you are interesting in volunteering,
please give Margie Young a call at 634-9826 and she will sign you up for a training session. We love
new volunteers, new ideas, and new books.
Current volunteers include: Margie Young, Diane Vaughn, Diane Mueller, Jan Warsing, Angela Anderson, Shawn Murphy,
Barbara Smith, Carole Gaither, Marilyn Van Wie, Mary Meyer, Judy McCaulley, Lynn Glass, Jackie Forristall, Paula
Conover, Mila Bouts, Diane Hughes, Gigi Stratton, Alice Nightingale, Betsy Stafford, Tom and Gloria Moreau, Joan
Shinnick, Jeanne Earle McConnell, Harriette Miller, Penny Smith, Bonnie Tobias, Ann Lowder, Susan Thordsen, Linda
Polk, Ann Low, and Sherry Wall.

Summer Reading Programs at the Library in Full Swing
The Marshes of Glynn Libraries started distributing
summer reading packets on May 26 and programs will
run through July 31. This year’s theme for children is
“Every Hero Has a Story.” In addition to story times,
we offer art programs, science days, and puppet and
music shows. We have special events centered
around the Jacksonville Zoo, The Abells from North
Carolina, and Porkchop Productions from South
Carolina. In all, we have 22 programs in Brunswick
and an additional 9 programs on SSI during the
months of June and July. A new offering this summer
will be “Bedtime Math.” Children are encouraged to
go online and solve a daily math problem. After
completing the program, participants earn a reward.
Summer readers who reach their reading goals will
also earn rewards for their hard work.
MOGL’s teen program is just as exciting. The teens will “Unmask” their inner hero. We have three
programs available for middle and high school students. Our “Super Hero Training School” will
meet on most Thursday nights, offering CPR training, a visit with a pro surfer, and lessons in
cartooning. Saturdays our Robotics Summer Camp meets. Participants build and program robots,
coached by students from the College of Coastal Georgia’s math department. The third program we
are offering for teens is an Author’s Camp. During two one-week sessions participants will create a
graphic novel short story. The short stories will be compiled, printed and bound. The finished book
will become part of the library’s local author book collection. Teen readers will also earn rewards
for all of the reading they do.
Be a library hero; bring a child, grandchild or neighbor to one of our great programs this summer!
