Meaning of symbols
The safety instructions in the operating manuals, the Startup/Unpacking Instructions or in
other documentation provided, on screen displays on the tester during operation and on
the products themselves use symbols with the following meanings:
Warning!
Text with this symbol contains information for your safety and how you can reduce the
risk of severe or fatal injury.
The WARNING
symbol warrants particular attention for your safety.
Caution!
Text with this symbol contains information about how you can avoid damage to the
vehicle and the tester.
The Caution
symbol tells you that if the information is ignored, damage to the
vehicle and/or the tester could result (e.g.: Ensure that the touch screen is not touched
with sharp, edged objects.).
Note
Text with this symbol contains additional, useful information.
A Note
symbol contains other, special instructions for using the device, and related
information.

Power supply
The VAS 5052 is supplied with power from the docking station connected to the mains supply,
from the internal battery or from the vehicle battery. A supply from the docking station has precedence over supply from the vehicle’s battery.
Caution!
The unit is supplied with a power cable suitable for the country of delivery. If the mains connector cannot be connected to your national power system then you can replace the power cable
with a type that is normal for your country (max. 4.5 m), which meets the standard for operation
in grounded power supply networks and is also approved for such use (TN networks according
to VDE 8085, EN 60950, IEC 950, UL 1950, CSA 22.2 No. 950).
For operation in the USA and Canada, use a UL-approved or a CSA-approved oil-resistant
mains power cable.
Operation at non-grounded networks or networks grounded via impedance (IT networks) is not
permitted.
Please refer also to the safety instructions.
5.1
Supply from the mains network
The VAS 5052 is supplied via the docking station from the mains (100-240 V, 50-60 Hz). At the
same time the internal battery is also being charged (quick-charging in approx. 2.5 hours).
5.2
Supply from the internal battery
The tester is supplied from the internal battery as soon as it is disconnected from the power
cable.
Its typical buffering time is 3.5 hours in standby mode at maximum and depends on the operating
mode (start-up, connected USB device, and so on) as well as on the age of the battery.
5.3
Supply from the vehicle's battery
When the VAS 5052 is connected to the diagnostic interface of a vehicle by the diagnostic cable
then it is supplied with power from the on-board power supply of the vehicle's battery. A requirement for this is that the battery has a sufficient remaining charge.
However, if the tester is connected via the docking station at the same time, it will be the docking
station which supplies the required power and no load is put on the vehicle's battery.

Establishing the power supply
Place the tester in the holder of the docking station designed for this purpose.
Connect the power cable to the docking station and to the mains. Make sure that the battery is
charged (LED 2 will show yellow until charging is finished). It takes about 2.5 hours to fully
charge an empty battery.
Note — charging the battery
When installing a base CD, the software for the tester charging circuit (power supply) may be
replaced as well. During the update of the charging circuit software, the charging circuit will not
function and the tester is supplied with power from the battery, even when the power supply is
connected.
The battery must be sufficiently charged for this process. If its charge is too low, the software
update process may crash in such a way that the charging circuit cannot be made to function
again. Therefore a new base CD should only ever be loaded when the battery is charged.
6.3
Power-up
1. Switch on the tester. To do this, press the On/Off button for about one second (see fig. 6-1, 1).
LED 1 (fig. 6-1, 2) shows green when the tester is getting its power via the docking station
from the table power adapter which is connected to the mains.
LED 2 (fig. 6-1, 3) shows yellow as long as the battery is being charged.
2. Leave the tester on its docking station until LED 2 goes out. You can still carry on with the rest
of the procedure.

Installing brand data from CDs
For Guided Fault Finding and Guided Functions to work, you must install one or more brand CDs
as follows:
Note
When the DVD drive is in operation, the tester must not be inclined more than 15° from horizontal
position, as this could damage the drive drawer or the inserted data carriers. When you want to use the
DVD drive, take the tester out of the docking station, lay it flat or unfold its standing legs and place it on a
flat surface, and switch it on. You can supply the tester with power either via the in-built rechargeable
battery or via a vehicle electrical system.
The DVD drawer can be extended by means of its push-button. The tester must be switched on for this.
When you open the DVD drawer, sensitive components of the lens system are now accessible. Make
sure that these do not become dirty or damaged.
When you insert a CD or DVD, make sure that it correctly engages in the DVD drawer in the centre or in
the bracket.
1. Open the DVD drive and insert the desired brand CD.
2. Close the DVD drive.
3. Select the CD-Update/Installation menu item in the Administration mask. Confirm the security
dialog that follows.
4. The contents of the brand CD are now installed. The installation procedure may take some
time to complete. As soon as installation is complete, the tester switches from Administration
operating mode back to the start mask. A brand symbol is displayed in the top right corner
of the screen to indicate which brand CD(s) have been installed on the tester.
