Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse Corporation has grown from the
original location in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina in 1946 to over 1,750 stores in the USA, Canada, Mexico
and Australia today. They enjoy revenue of over forty nine billion dollars a year and employ in excess of
234,000 people. Each store employs between 80 to 400 people, depending on size and sales volume. In
both the USA and worldwide, Lowe’s is second only to Home Depot in the hardware business. They have operated a store on West Fourth Street for several years in Lewistown.
The history begins in 1921 when Lucius S. Lowe opened Lowe’s North Wilkesboro Hardware in North Carolina. Upon his passing in 1940, his daughter
inherited the business, selling it soon after to her brother, Jim, who enlisted in the military leaving his sister and mom in charge. Following his service through the
end of World War II, Jim took the reins of the company from his mother and sister and then partnered with his sister Ruth’s husband, Carl Buchan, also a World War
II veteran.
The partners had differing goals and decided to split their business endeavors. Carl chose the Lowe’s hardware and building materials business and Jim
pursued a car dealership they had purchased and later opened a chain of Lowe’s grocery stores. Buchan immediately started expanding, opening more and more
stores until his sudden death in 1960 at age 44. In 1961 his management team took the chain public. At that point in time they had 21 stores and were doing
$32,000,000 in annual sales.
Lowe’s reluctantly entered the “big box” arena late in the 1980’s, previously sticking to small stores in rural areas. To compete with Home Depot, they
continually have expanded into larger cities and today almost all of their stores are of the “big box” variety. Since 2007, they have started building stores in Canada, Mexico and Australia.
Lowe’s is one of the top fifty trade mark applicants in the country according to the U.S. Patent and trademark Office. Many items they market are their
own exclusive brands in addition to all the national brands they retail.
Lowe’s has continually been awarded for promoting energy efficiency in the products they sell and in the running of
Lowe's
their stores. Since 2003, they have won eight Energy Star Awards, including four Energy Star Partner of the Year Awards for

Brandy (Harshbarger)
Ritchey, owner of Kavazea Designs, was working for a full
service printing company in
Reading in 1995 as a graphic
designer. Her boss bestowed a
Kavazea Designs
nickname of “kavasea” upon her.

brandy and Courvoisier is phonetically spelled ka-va-zea. Therefore, kavasea is Brandy. Right then and there she decided if she
ever started her own business it would be “Kavazea Designs”, a very creative name for an equally creative artist.
Following more than a decade in Reading, her husband had a career opportunity necessitating a move
back to Mifflin County. This was exciting because they were both McVeytown area natives and they had a deep
seated love of the Juniata River Valley.
Brandy saw this as the opportunity for her to pursue a graphic design business of her own. Thus, merging
her nickname and her business name she became “Kavazea Designs”. One look at her impressive portfolio and it becomes apparent this was a great business decision.
Brandy was operating her design service business as a home based career for several years until her good friend and
college room-mate, Becca Brittain, suggested she relocate her business to space in the Goin’ Postal building at the Kish Centre
on South Main Street in downtown Lewistown. This transition took place on January 3 rd, 2012, and she has enjoyed a dramatic increase in clientele each month ever since.
Brandy has many connections within the industry and can offer a wide variety of services and products. Items such as
banners, signs, business cards, logo design, brochures, and catalogues, advertising services, promotional products and trade
show displays. She can execute the project from your dream to the delivered product.
Call Brandy Ritchey at 717-250-6354 and set up an appointment to sit down at the Goin’ Postal location to discuss
your needs. Once you’ve viewed her portfolio you will realize you’ve seen her work elsewhere, you just didn’t know she designed it.

Once each year in May we present a Business EXPO After Hours at Brookmere Winery & Vineyard Inn in their pavilion. We can accommodate about 25 exhibitors; first come, first served. This year we added live music with Bernie Rich
singing and playing guitar; soft rock and singer-songwriter stylings; a lot of James
Taylor/Cat Stevens/ kinds of music (Bernie is the stage name for Dr. Rich Burns).
Sound system was compliments of GME Communications (Michael Tate).
Food came from Billy’s BBQ in Reedsville and the Little Cupcake Shoppe &
Bakery in Burnham. Wine was supplied by Brookmere Winery. Door prizes were
given by the exhibiters and Mifflin-Juniata United Way Success by Six.

A Tribute to Dad
As a father of a seventeen year old daughter I
am often blindsided by the personality traits we
share. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that some of
them are genetic, rather than learned. Olivia will bring up concepts that we have never discussed and she will express ideology that is so in sync with my own that I
cannot help but marvel at my mentally “cloned” offspring. Each and every time this happens I
am proudly amazed.
As Father’s Day approaches I ponder what personality traits my dad and I might
share. Unfortunately he died when I was ten years old; hence I don’t have much history to
draw upon. After all these years I confuse actual memories of my dad with stories I’ve
been told by my mom and other relatives and friends. Based on the actual memories
and the shared stories at hand I have concluded that I was a very blessed child to carry
genes from dad’s genetic pool.
All of the Tunall’ s were happy, easy going, jolly people; all had great senses
of humor and got along well with most anybody. Family gatherings were amazing
story telling sessions. Funerals were always a call to come together. Most visits were
prompted by weddings, funerals or illness.
My dad was the youngest of eight siblings, seven boys (he was a seventh son)
and one girl. He stayed in the family home providing and caring for my grandparents
until they both died. He courted my mom from across the backyard fence for over a
decade and was forty five years old when they married. I came along three years later,
an only child. My mom was born on one side of the fence and died on the other, having
lived her entire life in just those two homes.
Dad and his siblings had eighth grade educations, but were skilled in many areas.
Three uncles were railroaders, one a plumber and two carpenters. My dad was a glass cutter at a glass manufacturing plant for several years and then spent most of his working
years employed by the Kane family, descendants of General Thomas L. Kane, founder of
Kane, as caretaker of their mansion. During the depression the Kane’s hit hard times financially and converted the property to a hotel/restaurant/bar.
My dad never exhibited anger at anyone but himself. A trait I share. He was always
forgiving and could not foster a grudge… another characteristic we share. He enjoyed dealing
with people and making them happy. He never met an animal he didn’t like, worked tirelessly
in the vegetable garden and took pride in landscaping and flower gardening. Christmas was his
greatest joy, decorating inside and outside of the house. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
He was a naturally creative cook, played piano and saxophone by ear (lost me there), believed
in God and church, voted in every election and worked every day except Sunday, reserving it for
family. He did not talk about people, was far from racist and relaxed by listening to music.
Seventeen years ago my mom died suddenly (Olivia was just two months old). When I
went through mom’s jewelry box I found the ring she bought for dad as a gift when they were
courting. He wore that ring until he died and my mom cherished it until she died. I put it on my
finger the day after her funeral and that’s where it’s been ever since. When I look down and see
that ring I feel the presence of my dad walking along side me and I draw upon his strengths, remembered or learned, and try to emulate the high standards he set.
Thanks dad for the gifts you continually shower upon me. Play those old
hymns on that piano on high and throw in a spiritual every now and then just for
me. Make sure there are begonias in the heavenly flower garden and loads of broccoli.
Happy Father’s Day, Dad! I wish we could have shared more than ten of them together.
