TOLEDO POLISH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY LIBRARY a place to reunite with family! Presented by-Marlene Hardman TPGS librarian and Vice President WHERE WE ARE LOCATED The TPGS Library is located in the old St. Michael School Building at 420 Sandusky St. Off Summit and on the Corner of Sandusky & Cleveland Sts. in North Toledo. SOMETHING ABOUT US TPGS was formed in 2002 from a group of local residents who were interested in genealogy and in preserving their Polish heritage. Our first research library opened in the old St. Hedwig School building in 2009. We moved to our new location at St. Michael's in 2012. Our society continues to grow in membership. We now have 150 plus members! Our monthly meeting are always held on the 3rd Saturday of the month except for July and August when we are closed for the summer. Our library is opened 3 days a month for research. Many other exciting club activities are planned for members throughout the year. We offer guest speakers, webinars, research help, field trips, summer picnic, quarterly newsletters, Christmas party, and so much more! A single membership is $20.00 annually and includes full use of library, and all of it's resources. OUR SPACIOUS CLUB MEETING ROOM St. Michael's community room Comfortably seats 125 people. BROADBAND INTERNET Broadband Internet complete with wifi and 2 laptop computers, and a printer/copier for patron research. Access to ancestry.com World Edition COLLECTORZ.COM DATABASE Library staff member Veronica Komorny catalogs all incoming books that are bought or donated to the TPGS library. Our library uses the collectorz.com database software program which allows us to scan the isbn which then downloads the full book details and cover images. Books are then searchable by author, title, isbn or by jacket cover! To date we now have over 1500 books, magazines & newsletters within our collection ! POLISH PIONEERS "THE FIRST 300 FAMILIES" Noted author and long-time TPGS member Rosemary Chorzempa has devoted a great deal of time and effort to definitive work on the origins of Toledo, Ohio's Polish community. She has documented the first 300 Polish families that started to arrive in Toledo in 1867. The binder not onl y gives an overview of what she has found, but a great deal more information including detailed maps! "THE ETHNICITY OF POLES IN TOLEDO" By Dr. David Chelminski Local historian, author and TPGS member Dr. David Chelminski has written two books that highlight the Polish in Toledo, Ohio. Our society is proud to house both of the these books: A dissertation entitled "Toledo's Nineteenth-Century Polonia" and "The Ethnicity of Poles in Toledo". OUR FIRST IMMIGRANT ANCESTORS DATABASE TPGS Member Russell Pawlowski created this database in 2006. So far Russ has documented over 1400 Polish immigrants who came to the U.S. and settled in NW Ohio. Among those documented you will find over 680 different surnames. The information, which is listed, gives the researcher a broad spectrum of information for a specific individual. Critical research information of these twelve fields may allow one to quickly find one's ancestral origins in Poland. • Surname and first name of you immigrant ancestor • Immigration date • Spouse/Spouses name • Port of departure and arrival • Parents of Immigrant • Ship • DOB • Church/Religious affiliation • Place of birth • LDS film number, if applicable • Settled in • Confirmation source OUR MAP COLLECTION We have a fine collection of maps and county atlases that can aid you in locating where your immigrant ancestors relocated in Toledo, Ohio. Also numerous maps of Poland that can aid you in finding your Ancestral village. OUR COLLECTIONS polish research We have numerous books that are specific to Polish Genealogical Research. The picture to the right showcases some of them. CHURCH-SCHOOL RECORDS We have over 70 binders containing Birth, Marriage and Death records with many of the records being indexed from the following parishes: St. Hedwig, St. Anthony, St. Adalbert, St. Stanislaus, St. Mary, Sts. Peter and Paul, St. Hyacinth, Little Flower, Our Lady of Lourdes, Nativity. Also included are St. Mary Magdalene, Sts. Cyril & Methodias and All Saints parishes from Rossford, Ohio. www.familysearch.org. Various school records and class photos from St. Anthony's, St. Hedwig's, St. Adalbert's and Nativity elementar y schools. NORTHWEST OHIO AND TOLEDO Assorted Genealogy Books from Northwest Ohio and Toledo & Michigan. HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOKS The TPGS library has over 140 school yearbooks from local area high schools. PEDIGREE CHARTS & SURNAME BOOK Over 70 completed pedigree charts that can aid you in making a family connection to other TPGS members, plus an Indexed Surname Binder that contains a listing of all the Surnames being researched by members within our society. RESEARCHING OTHER NATIONALITIES The TPGS library has many books that are specific to researching other Nationalities. A sampling of these books is in our "Coming to America " Series which highlights 12 different Nationalities. FAMILY HISTORIES Numerous members have donated copies of their families history books to our library. IMMIGRATION/NATURALIZATIONS AND DECLARATIONS OF INTENT Make sure you check out our huge selection of resource books that can aid you with finding how and when your ancestors arrived in America. Resource books are also on hand to help you find out when they became naturalized citizens! MILITARY BOOKS These beautifully illustrated color books show off a variety of military equipment and uniforms that were appropriate for the armies that fought in the the various wars. these books could possible prove helpful in dating that old military photo. CITY DIRECTORIES & ASST SOCIETY NEWSLETTERS The library holds a nice collection of city directories which date from 1894-present! We also have numerous newsletters from other Polish Genealogical societies including: the Polish Genealogical Society of Michigan, Chicago, Connecticut, California, and Cleveland. These newsletters hold a wealth of genealogical information! PARISH HISTORIES Over 70 local church & school history books are housed at the library. OBITUARIES-INDEX BINDERS ETC. TPGS member and library staff member Joan Caughhorh has been compiling obituary books since 2007. She clips obituaries for every person of Polish descent and also those who married a person of Polish ancestry. Alphabetical indexes are included for each year. This is a great resource for finding deceased loved ones! CEMETERY RECORDS Numerous resources pertaining to the the early Catholic cemeteries in the Toledo, Ohio area are available to help you locate just where your ancestor may be buried. Many section maps are also included. TPGS librarians Joyce Homrighaus and Marlene Hardman are indexing the people of Polish Ancestry that were buried at Calvary Cemetery during the years 1886-1908. They hope to be finished with the index by the end of 2015. MEMORABILIA DISPLAY CASE The library holds a large collection of Polish memorabilia that has been donated to the TPGS Library! TPGS CLUB NEWSLETTERS Back Issues of all TPGS Club Newsletters and Polonia Journals are housed in a binder for your viewing. Please check out this valuable resource! You may just find that elusive ancestor showcased on the cover or within an issue! PRAYER CARDS L i b r a r y s t af f m e m b e r Ma r g e Stefanski has been collecting, cataloging and indexing prayer cards for over 3 years now. The library is proud to own this wonderful collection which fill 3 binders. Prayer cards f rom o ver 1400 individuals have been collected to date, with more being added ever week! OUR PUBLICATIONS Toledo's Polonia, Polish Pride Cookbook, History of St.Hedwig Church CD & Honoring our Ancestors" which includes the Diamond Jubilee of St. Anthony Parish are available to purchase!
