ANZAC Day Commemorations in Beverley
At 4.59am in the pre-dawn, light a horse and rider and riderless
pony moved slowly down the road at the side of the Cenotaph.
The Beverley Pony Club evoked memories of those who enlisted
in 1914 to 1918 and formed what became the 10th Light Horse
Regiment.
This signalled the commencement of 50 minutes of audio visual
presentations expertly compiled by Steve Ramm. One screen
showing film footage of various battles and scenes from Gallipoli
to Vietnam and the other commemorating the Australian lives lost
in all combat and peacekeeping missions since white settlement
in this country.
At 5.30am there was a brief delay while a train passed though the
station precinct, which gave some of the estimated 500 attending
a memory that our troops left the town by train to travel to the
muster point at Blackboy Hill in Guildford. As these screens faded
into the simple words “Lest We Forget”, Phil Richardson as a lone
piper started playing in the car park next to the Station and then
led the marchers to their mark at the Cenotaph – next to the Jeep
provided as a static display by Neil Jefferson.
Mr Bruce Mann read several excerpts from his Grandfather’s
Gallipoli diary which recorded the actual experiences of one who
served in that theatre of war.
With all that had been experienced, in almost complete stillness in
the hour preceding, the Last Post, the Silence, the Ode and
Reveille were even more moving than usual. Flags were flown on
three flag poles this year, remembering Australian and
New Zealand forces and for the first time the Aboriginal Flag was
flown at the special request of the National RSL and Department
of Veteran’s Affairs that these service men and women be
especially acknowledged this year.
Following playing of Kelly Newton-Wordsworth’s singing “Lest We
Forget”, our piper again played to lead our marchers and members of the public to the RSL Hall for a Gunfire Breakfast wonderfully catered by the RSL Social Committee.
At 11am saw around 400 gathered to see the Veterans Parade
led again by Phil Richardson on bagpipes. Mrs Joan McQuin,
Student Leaders from Beverley High School, Beverley Station
Arts Choir accompanied by Mrs Judith Moulton, Irene Oram
representing the RSL, all ably guided by Mr John Lane as Master
of Ceremonies, provided a moving service of commemoration.
Wreaths were laid by local organisations and members of the
public in remembrance of family who served.

“Remembering Them Exhibition”
The Beverley Historical Society is to
be congratulated on the research
undertaken to investigate the social
impact and human cost of WW1 on
the Beverley district. The group has
collated information and memorabilia
into an exhibition at the Dead Finish
Museum which runs until September
and I encourage everyone to make
time to visit the museum and learn
about this period of Beverley’s
history.

UWA Student Visit
Following on from the UWA School of

second visit to Beverley on Monday
11th May. This visit will only involve
those members of the community

students. We look forward to the
outcome of their study of Beverley
and any possibilities they may see for
future tourism planning.
Wheatbelt Tour
With Councils’ application to the

delegation of Councillors and Staff
has undertaken a Wheatbelt tour to
better inform the process of moving

As usual Mitch, Kath, Rachel and also Kia and young
Erin have been keeping both the horses amused and
intrigued with lots of fun activities and educational
workouts. And of course lots of apples and left over
carrots from all the workers (these two have sure
been spoilt and loved every minute of it).
Hi All
Well by the time you all read this the historic stables here
at Avondale would have had a huge facelift by scoring a
new roof. The old lab office will have new guttering as
well. The stables look fantastic with all the wood getting a
bit of TLC as well. Comet and Robbie would like to thank
the guys from Applied Building Conservation Training
who came all the way from South Australia for this job
and to the work team from Wooroloo Prison your work is
highly appreciated. And the boys love the new upgrades
to their stables. They think I need to send them a bag of
carrots as a thank you gift, I’m thinking maybe a carrot
cake instead.
During April we saw Avondale Farm open again to the
public with 2 open weekends, it was good to see lots of
kids running around and having a peek in the animal
nursery and families enjoying the facilities. Massive
thanks to Bronwyn Nutting and Mark Atkinson from
Alnwick Clydesdales for bringing over Mikayla and Lady
on Easter Monday your jokes and educational lessons
are highly valuable to us all.
Well that’s all for now we hope people come out
during the open weekends to take a look at the stable
upgrades as I’m sure you will all be impressed.

e are all looking forward to our first
'special' day on the last week in April when we will
spend time dyeing our own fabric. Then the challenge
will be to make something from the dyed fabric using
our cutting machine. With this we can cut many
different shapes which can then be used to make a
block. This is only limited by our imagination. Hopefully
some of the results can be published in the next
Blarney.
Three ladies went along to the Friendship Day at
Baskerville on Saturday April 18th, where they all
enjoyed many things about the day. It was reported
how lovely and plentiful was the food for morning and
afternoon tea. There were many items shown for the
'show and tell' segment of the day, where people can
show their skills and share ideas with others.

Sewing machines can be heard stitching away making
quilts for various purposes.
We are always willing to welcome new people, so if
you would like to join us or even just come out and
watch what we do, feel free. We meet each Tuesday

of fun and sharing.

Beverley Historical Society
We had a good attendance at our
last meeting with only 3 apologies.
The launch of our WWI exhibition
went very well. Unfortunately, some
of the Perth people were unable to
attend. We held the launch outdoors
and it was a lovely afternoon
weather wise. Hon. Mia Davies MLA
gave a very nice speech as did
Shire
President Dee Ridgway. Dee
officially opened the exhibition for
us. Thanks go to Dee, Mia and also
to Shire CEO Steve Gollan for his
attendance.
Over Easter we had a lot of visitors
to view the exhibition. Most of them
also took the opportunity to look
around the rest of the museum. All
the comments have been very
favourable. Because there is plenty
to read, some people have said that
they will be back as it is too much to
absorb in one visit. The HACC
ladies and men come for a visit.
Also a small bus group of
pensioners/seniors from Pingelly.
Thanks must go to the ladies of the
Garden Club for the clean up they
did in the Dead Finish garden. It
was a job well done. We know there
were only a few of you that turned
up to do the work. It is a credit to
you.
The Dead Finish Museum is located
on the corner of Morrison Street and
Hunt Road and is open on Sundays
11.00am - 3.00pm. On other days it
is open by request.
The next meeting of The Historical
Society will be held on Monday 11
May at 2.00pm at the Dead Finish.

Fifteen members gathered in the dining room of the Dead Finish as the meeting
room was being utilized by another community group and we enjoyed the exhibits
as we had our meeting.
A very successful Easter stall was reported on and thank you to all members who
contributed. Thank you to the CRC staff for their help. Easter weekend certainly
saw our little town bulging at the seams and a good time was had by all. Not to
mention the money raised for various local activities and projects.
Just as a by the way, the sight that gave me the most pleasure was to drive past the
recreation grounds very early on Sunday and seeing several little children playing
tennis in bare feet and their pyjamas.
As I type this article the rain is falling, albeit lightly, so the planting season is with
us. All brassicas (cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower) broad beans, peas,
mustards, onions and spinach can go in now. Remember to feed the bed before you
put in your plants.
It is also time to think of what can be coddled for the Show in August. The theme
is sustainability so tough things will be better.

Almost all flowers can go in now. Some that come to mind are alyssum, cineraria,
everlastings, poppies, hollyhocks, nigella, pansy and stock.
Next month the garden club will be going on their bus trip to Dawson’s. Members
are asked to book their seats as the bus holds a finite number! Number to ring is

The date of the outing is 5th May and the bus will leave at 9am from the Dead
Finish. Cost to be worked out but it is always very reasonable.

Register email
Viral email with misinformation on
release of mobile numbers to
telemarketers
The ACMA is reminding consumers
that the viral email warning that
‘mobile numbers will be made public’
is a hoax.
The email started circulating around
Australia
in
2009
and
tells
consumers that mobile numbers will
shortly be made public and that you
will be charged for telemarketing
calls that you receive.
Although the message refers to the
Australian Do Not Call Register, the
email appears to have originated
from North America a number of
years ago. The reference to being
charged for receiving calls arises
from a different charging regime in
the USA where mobile phone users
are often charged for calls that they
receive. This charging regime does
not apply in Australia.
The Do Not Call Register provides
Australians with the ability to opt out
of
receiving
most
unsolicited
telemarketing calls, and marketing
faxes. Australians can put their
telephone or fax numbers on the:

at www.donotcall.gov.au or by
calling 1300 792 958.
This is for Australian phone numbers.
The Australian Do Not Call Register
has strong mechanisms to protect
the
privacy

registrants.

The renovations are complete and we are settling back in, and the floors look and feel great! This means that LEGO
Club returns as of Monday 04 May at 2.45pm - 3.45pm. The club is a great way for kids to socially interact and use
their building skills to create masterpieces. $2 per session which includes a delicious afternoon tea.
The Management Committee are pleased to announce that Ashleigh Ugle will be continuing her traineeship for
another year at the centre. Ashleigh has been a valuable asset to the centre and the community. After she
completes her Certificate II in Business in June, she intends to study Certificate III in Business and Administration.
Congratulations Ashe.
Due to the lack of volunteers, the CRC Management Committee and Shire of Beverley have decided to move the
Beverley Visitors Centre and merchandise to the Beverley CRC, which means that we will be able to offer
visitors and tourists to our town a shopfront that is open 5 - 6 days a week. The Aeronautical Museum will still be
open by request.
Seniors Fall Prevention luncheon was a great success with 20 people in attendance. Elouise Hawkins the Health
Promotion Officer, Avon and Central Wheatbelt Primary Health Service gave the group some valuable hints and tips
on falls prevention and managing medicines. The newest development in this area is that through our local Medical
Practice you can arrange a home visit from an accredited pharmacist to visit and review your medicines. Karen
Hansen gave a short talk on the importance of Vitamin D intake. Thanks must go to the Beverley Country Kitchen for
the lovely lunch.

Australia in the 1900’s through the fictional tale of a boy called Starlight. This astounding tale has been passed down

Easter Art Exhibition
What a month! To add to the festival
atmosphere of Easter in Beverley, the 47th
Annual Art Purchase Exhibition succeeded in
having a frenzy of eager buyers coming and
going the Town Hall with the amazing total of
58 works sold.
This year's head judge Anne Errey was joined
by Jennifer Sadler who were suitably impressed to be part of such a well organised
exhibition. To quote from an email following
the judging from Anne: ‘Your enterprise
should be winning accolades for not-for-profit business or
whatever category it would fit.’ The official wine and cheese
opening attracted a good crowd who were treated to words by
Anne Erre, a professional artist across many platforms with a
lifetime of curatorial and tertiary educational experience.
To add to the Shire Collection the Gallery purchased the
inaugural Beverley Art Prize painting – an exquisite acrylic work
by Christine Baker titled ‘Requium’ which is on display at the
Shire for those wishing to see.
‘Man’s Best Friend’ painted by
Jos Coufreur was the outright winner of the popular vote (public
choice) award.

substantial prizes to attract the calibre of artists we have come
to expect. To all who visited the Exhibition whether buying art or
merely appreciating it, you make all the hard work worthwhile.
To the Art Gallery Committee (in particular Kathryn McLean as

helpers who so willingly set up the lights and stands, unpacked
the paintings and helped with the hanging, decorated the hall with flowers, worked the sound system, man the
exhibition, and then packed it all up again, THANK YOU.
Easter Art Raffle
The lovely oil painting donated by Pat Lane (Best Local Artist 2014) and framed by Chris and Ruth Baker of
York was won by Denise Strange. Now, as Marion Alexander has won the prize of best Local artist 2015 we look
forward seeing a painting by her to raffle at next year’s exhibition. Congratulations Marion!

Artist-in-Residence
Luis Fuentes was so thrilled with his time spent in Beverley
that it has reaffirmed his desire to migrate to Western
Australia. His residency culminated in farewell drinks at
East End Studio where Luis had spent the month of April
painting madly to replace the paintings he sold at the Easter
Exhibition. The free space in Marlene’s shop/studio was
warmly welcomed and we thank Marlene again for her
generosity.

We are hoping that the necessary restorations to the Station building will be completed during the winter
months and the Artist-in-Residency programme can resume as was before the building was closed last year.
Meanwhile, we welcome back Charlotte O’Shea who is about to commence the Artist-in-Residency Grants
Programme at the Beverley School for all of terms two and three. Charlotte will be residing at the Shire house
in Dawson Street for two nights per week, and Mandy Evans has decided to come back to town and share the
accommodation, and is happy to paint again in the greenroom of the Platform Theatre and welcomes anyone
wishing to see her work or just wanting to say hello.

Beverley Station Singers
From all accounts the Station Singers sang
beautifully at the Broun/Atkinson wedding on April
18th at the Station, welcoming the bride on her father’s arm
as they entered the garden under the clock arch to the sounds
of ‘The Wedding Song’ (‘There is Love’). Then Kelly
Newton-Wordsworth played guitar and sang her own song
Wings of the Night’ during signing of the register in the
gazebo, and finally, the singers joined Kelly with the jaunty
‘Irish Blessing’ as the newly-weds joined their family and
friends. Great stuff!
Our next ‘gig’ will be singing at the Anzac Day service. Kelly
will not be joining the rest of the singers as she has been
invited to perform at the Supreme Court Gardens on Anzac
Day singing her balled ’Lest We Forget’. She will be supported
by a 100-strong choir under the direction of Perth Modern
School choral conductor Celia Christmass. We are indeed
privileged to have Kelly work with our group on a monthly basis.

Platform Theatre
On Tuesday 11th April Beverley Station Arts was fortunate to obtain the services of garden guru Sabrina Hahn
to give her expert advice on the type of trees best suited to shade the Platform Theatre. This has been a
rather drawn out process of deciding where and what to plant and we are now able to go ahead planting. Many
thanks to the Pepper family for allowing some planting on their side of the fence.
There’s nothing really to report this month regarding events the
Platform Theatre, however, there was an event at the Station that
deserves space – that of the wedding ceremony of my daughter Louise
Broun to Chad Atkinson on Saturday 18th April. It was a lovely
ceremony on the most perfect day with the Station Singers filling the
air with their sound from gazebo/bandstand. I wish to thank
wholeheartedly the singers for giving up their time to perform, and
the efforts of both Steve Ramm and Tim Kilpatrick for their
expertise in producing such sound, and also, a special mention to Valda
Morton and Sandy Shaw for maintaining the garden during the
summer months to be at its ultimate beauty for the wedding. Thank

The next event at the Platform Theatre will not be until the
afternoon of Saturday 12th September when we host the annual
Country Choir Bash.

With Easter behind us take some time to consider what tasks you
need to complete over the next few weeks. The darker mornings and
shorter days can make it difficult to stay motivated; a task list can
help combat this by allowing you to plan what to do first.
If you are in an area which has received germinating rainfalls, make
sure you are ready to control your weeds. Targeting weeds when
they are small makes them easier and cheaper to remove or
chemically control. If relying on herbicide to control weeds,
remember to always read labels and consider whether you need to
change the herbicide to prevent chemical resistance.
Check fences to ensure they are in good condition especially if you
are expecting lambs or other newborn stock. By fixing or replacing
damaged fences you will ensure your animals don’t escape.
Remember any animals born on your property need to be correctly
identified. Cattle born on your property need a white NLIS tag before
leaving for the saleyards, as well as a brand or earmark and a
waybill. Lambs need to have a sky blue ear tag. Be organised to
avoid having animals returned. For help, call the Department of
Agriculture and Food Brands Office on 9780 6207.
Cooler weather and new growth can see a significant rise in pest
insects. Keep a very close eye on newly germinating pastures and
crops and be prepared to control insects (like Red Legged Earth Mite
(RLEM)) or they can destroy the tiny new seedlings.
Autumn is a key time for nutrient uptake for avocados as the root
system is very strong and preparing the tree for winter and the
development of flowers for the spring fruit set. This is also a good
time to collect your leaves for nutrient analysis.

Pick last crops of pumpkins and sweet potatoes and store
undercover. Cut pumpkin stem longer then 10cm as they will store
for longer. Also pick last crops of capsicums, eggplants, tomatoes
and zucchini. Pick and process olives.
Prepare your veggie patch for next season’s plants by replacing
nutrients. A good quality manure should be incorporated into the
soil.
After cool damp nights or following rainfall check for snails, if you
don’t want to use pellets you can make homemade beer traps.

We all know that garlic is a great
winter/cold/flu fighter and since the
garlic is very soon shooting to be
planted in the garden, here is a
recipe to use up all the left over
garlic bulbs!! This is an original
recipe from the Middle East. You
can use it for meat, kebabs, you can
use it for marinades, just add a tea
spoon to your dressings and if you
are really loooving your garlic, eat it
on a piece of your Sourdough Rye
Bread. This is a threat and can bring
tears to your eyes. This might be for
the joy to be alive or because it is
really strong.
Garlic Sauce – toom or toum
(this is the Arabic Word for
garlic.)
Ingredients:
1 cup of peeled garlic
¼ tsp. salt
Juice of one lemon
1 ¼ cup of olive oil
Peel 1 cup of garlic, make sure
there are no green shoots inside,
they need to be removed otherwise
your garlic sauce will be bitter. Place
the garlic gloves in your food
processor.
Add the salt and mince the garlic for
about 30 seconds. Add ¼ cup of
olive oil to the minced garlic,
process for another 30 seconds.
With the machine running, add very
slowly the olive oil, similar to
making mayonnaise, very very
slowly, between the oil add a
tablespoon of the lemon juice at a
time and continue with the olive oil.
Let the machine run and incorporate
all of the oil and lemon juice. Take
your time to do this; it is very
important that the oil and the lemon
juice is slowly mixed. When you
have finished adding all, stop the
machine. The result is a creamy to
whitish thick sauce, wonderful
strong tasting. I usually make a big
batch of it to use up all the garlic
and fill up ice cube trays with it,
cover with foil and place it in the
freezer. Every few days I take out a
piece of the frozen toom/toum and
use it.

About HACC
The HACC Service is a part of the Beverley Health Service Multi Purpose Service (MPS), in which the Commonwealth funding for the
residential aged care, HAC and State health care funding have been combined with the aim of providing flexible health services to meet the
health needs of the local community.
Who can access HACC services?
The HACC target population comprises of people living in the community who, in the absence of basic maintenance and support services, are
at risk of premature or inappropriate long-term residential care, including:
i.
Older and frail persons, with moderate, severe or profound disabilities;
ii.
Younger persons with moderate, severe or profound disabilities;
iii.

Day Centre Happenings
We welcome a new volunteer, Verna to our group and along with our other volunteers, thank her for her support.
Ladies of the Day Centre have been busy making poppies for The Historical Society and The Beverley RSL for the town’s displays in
recognition of the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC conflicts in Gallipoli and the Western Front.
We had a visit to the Day Centre by Shane Negus who delivered a very interesting power point presentation of his research of Beverley
veterans and our day centre clients have visited the Dead Finish Museum and viewed the extensive display by The Beverley Historical
Society.
Many hands have been busy making footy rugs, beanies and novelty items ready for sale and raffles at “AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST MORNING
TEA” which will be held on Friday 15th May at Beverley District High School. Funds raised to be donated to the Cancer Council of WA.
We have had visits to the Day Centre by guest speakers and musicians and we will be entertained by the Beverley Line Dancers this
month…..We continue to do short trips to local attractions and places of interest and have been on longer trips to
Pingelly (picnic lunch), Wickepin (Albert Facey House, Meckering (Camera Museum) and York (Chinese Restaurant).
Anyone who is eligible is more then welcome to join the fun at Beverley Centre-based Day Care, contact the Health Service on 9646 3200.

The story behind
‘The Last Post’
If any of you have ever been to an ANZAC Day service or a military
funeral, you would have heard the haunting song, ’The Last Post’.
It’s the song that usually gives us a lump in our throat and tears in our
eyes. The following story brings new meaning to it and it is something
that everyone should know.
Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the American Civil War,
when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men
near Harrison’s landing in Virginia. The Confederate Army was
on the other side of the narrow strip of land.
During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the moaning of a
soldier who lay severely wounded on the field of battle. Not
knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain
decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man back for
medical attention. Crawling on his stomach through gunfire, the
Captain reached the injured soldier and began pulling him back
towards his encampment.
When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it
was actually a Confederate soldier, but the soldier was dead…
The Captain lit a lantern and suddenly caught his breath and
went numb with shock. In the dim light he saw the face of a
soldier… it was his own son. The boy had been studying music in
the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father, the
boy enlisted in the Confederate Army.
The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission
of his superiors to give his son a full military burial, despite his
enemy status. His request was only partially granted. The
Captain asked if he could have a group of Army band members
play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral. The request was
turned down since the soldier was Confederate. But out of
respect for the father, they did say they could give him just one
musician.
The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series
of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket
of the dead youth’s uniform. The wish was granted.
This is how the haunting melody we now know as ‘The Last
Post’, used at military funerals and services worldwide was born.

of culture and country has to prove to
Australia as to who they are and where

Down: It is expected that the
government will be closing down 150
communities (12,500) men, women and
children. Up to date there has been no
plans to house these soon to be
homeless people. The question is if there
is no alternate accommodation, they will
be sleeping under trees, in parks and on
the streets in the northern towns.

this desperate situation could arise on
our lucky country and for who? Where
is this so called lucky generation.

Hello Everyone
As I write this Blarney (sat at home, in my kitchen,
dogs wanting to go out for a walk but they can’t yet
because I forget to write this months edition) I can say
that my theory was and still is right; my brother’s gone
home so the weather has turned nice again. I’m not
saying the rain wasn’t welcome but he’s like Crowded
House that lad (and if anyone can guess what that’s a
reference to they win a slice of Jane’s wonderful
chocolate cake).
Heavy Heart
It’s with a bit of a heavy heart I find myself writing this
Blarney. As everyone is no doubt aware we have been
touched by incidents out in Sandstone recently
involving members of our community. Out of respect
for everyone involved I won’t go into tremendous detail
but please respect those involved in this incident, offer
them goodwill and best wishes, not opinions. It’s a
tough time and one that isn’t helped by a number of
rumours I’ve heard in town. The press will always use
terminology and phrases which aren’t helpful. They
have a job to do and so do we so in that respect I’d ask
for tact and diplomacy rather than reacting to
something you read in the papers or see on the TV.

Crime
There’s been a few more incidents of wire cutting
around the outer edges of town. Due to some fantastic
information we have received from various people in
and around town we are building up a picture of
possible offenders and are continuing to investigate
these incidents fully. Other than that we’ve been steady
with a few crimes of a minor nature reported to us,
nothing overly serious but enough to keep us on our
toes.
Please keep an eye out for scams, particularly email
ones. Don’t click on anything you think might be iffy,
instead either contact us (see more below) or contact

I’ve been informed that I’ve ‘won’ in excess of
$5000000 in the last few days according to my inbox.
Don’t you have to buy a ticket to win a lottery? I haven’t
bought one. Somehow I don’t believe them.

If anyone has been trying to contact us on our station

been getting responses, we haven’t suddenly become
rude or shy. Apparently we now have a new ‘shared
folder system’ and that’s where all our emails were
going to. It’s a re-occurring theme with me in that I
haven’t got a clue what I’m talking about when it comes
to such gobbledegook but I’m assured now that I’ve

followed all the instructions (they were sent to me in a
style that only 3 year olds and Police Sergeants can
understand) that the system should be working again.
We’ll see…….
Grrrrrr
That’s the sound of me being angry. Remember a few
Blarneys ago I mentioned rumours, gossip and the devil
that is Facebook? Well, it’s come back to haunt me. I’ve
been trying to think of a nice way of saying this but I’ve
failed so I’m going to be blunt; some people need to
grow up, need their heads banging together and get on
with their lives in as adult way as is possible. If someone
says something to you, either personally (very rare,
people are cowards) or via a 3rd party why not be the
bigger person and walk away? Is it really worth you
getting into trouble because of something that was said
about you? Do you need to go round and bash them
because they were idiotic in what they said? If it is then
ask yourself this question, who’s the idiot ? The one who
said it (yes they are) or the one who reacted and ended
up getting a criminal record out of it (yes they are). Walk
away, laugh, carry on with your lives, trust me, you’ll feel
better about it. Oh, and if those doing the threatening
are reading this (or having it read to them) then please,
once again, stop threatening to ‘get people up to sort
them out’. That didn’t work in 3rd grade, it sure as hell
won’t work in adult life.
A perfect example of how to behave with idiots is in the
film Rocky II. I can see yourself asking “where’s he
going with this?”. Well, hear me out. In one scene Rocky
takes a water bucket from another boxer who spits into
said bucket but misses and some goes on him. The
other boxer, who has been taunting him throughout,
taunts our hero some more. Rocky says “Oops”. The
bully boxer says “is that all you can say, oops?” Rocky
pauses, smiles and walks away. It’s a classic put down.
He was the better person. The rest is history, at the end
he wins the fight (not with the taunter, with the bloke out
of Predator) and goes on to make 37 more Rocky films,
most of them rubbish.
That’s all for now
Ok, I’ll have to go now as the dogs are getting impatient.
One’s looking at his lead and the other one, well, let’s
just say he NEEDS to go as he’s telling me via the
sense of smell and he’s looking at the yellow
bags………….
Please, if someone taunts you, calls you a name or just
behaves in a childish manner remember Rocky, smile
and walk away, but never, ever, get talked into making a
film called The Expendables 4, it just won’t work.

Court Appearance/Matters
For all such matters, try to seek legal aid/
advice, either by phone or by appointment,
whenever it is possible. I will contact a legal
community service on your behalf, with a
view to make an appointment for you, in your
presence and with your authority. I have
been advised that on court matters, if legal
advice is not available the Legal Centres
suggest to seek an adjournment. i.e. request
from the Magistrate that you wish to seek
legal advice. TV reports tell us that Legal Aid
to Magistrates Court are not being cut back.
Always check to see if you do qualify.
Homeless people/Families living below the
poverty line. Once again, TV and radio tell us
that as on 21/04/2015, there are 1 million
plus home less people and 1.6 million
families living below the poverty line in
Australia. i.e. earn less than $640 per week.
One should take note that while the
millionaires and billionaires are increasing by
the month, this is happening in Australia.
Department of Human Services - Centrelink
While all tis is happening i.e. well over 2.6
million that are homeless and in poverty and
another 1 million who are disadvantaged or
have a disability. Our Federal Minister of
Human Services was talking tough on ABC
TV and other channels. She was referring to
Centrelink was now monitoring Facebook
and gathering information on recipients, as to
who is single, living together, claiming single
parents for children etc. i.e. challenging
status of couples/individuals. The minister
went on to say “All these cases eventually
end up in court and end up in a prison
sentence”. Once again clamping down on
single parents who have little children? One
must remember before Centrelink takes a
recipient to court, they would have to provide
solid evidence such as camera footage of
movements, documents etc. Most
investigators have 1.5 km long range
cameras, this maybe how such evidence is
gathered.
In closing, most welfare, religious and
community organisations, have stated that
instead of the authorities getting tough and
cutting down on welfare payments, in some
sectors it should be increased and make
homeless a priority and needs to be
addressed and acted upon immediately.

This month we are talking about detoxing or
cleansing. What happens in your body during
a ‘cleanse’ or ‘detox’. Juice cleanses, colon
cleanses, fruit detoxes, sugar detoxes, we
have all seen these tings, but do they actually
work? What are they supposed to do? Let’s
take a look at the science behind the fad.
Cleanses and detoxes are trendy, popular,
and promise to clear out nasty toxins from
your body and make you healthier. It is a tall
promise. There are tons of different cleanses
and detoxes. For the most part, a cleanse
and a detox are the same thing. They are
typically used interchangeably and have the
same basic goals: to remove ‘harmful’ things
from your body. Sometimes, they aim to
target a specific organ like the liver or colon,
and supposedly, detoxing makes you feel
better. There’s no specific definition of a
detox or cleanse, but they often involve
limiting your food intake to pressed juice,
avoiding specific types of food, or drinking a
concoction of juices that supposedly rid your
body of toxins. These supposed toxins are
rarely described by cleansers in detail, but
generally referred to as “poisons” or
“pollutants.” In the medical field, toxins can
refer to just about anything, from alcohol, to
foods, to medicines, to asbestos. Detoxing
can also refer to treatment for drug addiction,
but that is very different, here we are
specifically discussing these food-and-drink
cleanses.
What happens in your body when you are
on a cleanse.
We are all aware that fruit and vegetables are
good for us, so following that logic suggests
that a diet of just fruit and vegetables must be
super healthy, right? Right?? Not really. If
you drink nothing but juice for a week, you
will lose weight, but it is because you are not
eating, not because your body is “detoxing”.
Water is stored in your muscles with
glycogen. When you eat a low calorie diet,
you use up those glycogen stores, and lose
the water weight with it. You’ll gain that water
weight right back when you return to your
normal diet. You are also missing out on all
those other vital nutrients like fat, fibre, and
protein. In fact, some cleanses suggest that
you avoid exercise when you are on them
because your caloric intake is so low which
can lead to fatigue and dizziness. After a few
days, your body is basically running on
fumes, and without protein your body might
start to break down muscle tissue instead.
Likewise, the lack of fibre in your diet tends to
impact the function of your large intestine,
which might explain why people tend to
describe their gut feelings on a juice cleanse
as similar to the stomach flu. Most
importantly, a juice cleanse doesn’t do
anything that your body doesn’t already do
on its own. Our bodies are already pretty
good at removing toxins. If they weren’t, and
you needed a yearly detox, we’d all probably
be dead. Leaving our bodies alone they will
remove toxins on a daily basis thanks to the
kidneys, lungs, and liver. The whole point of
going to the bathroom is to flush out toxins!
Most of the cleanses and detoxes aren’t
dangerous, they can cause some problems.
Since juices don’t include much fibre, the
body ends up absorbing more fructose sugar,
which as we all know, isn’t good for you. The
good news on depriving yourself is that it
takes months to get any serious vitamin
deficiencies. Most of these cleanses are
probably stupid but not seriously harmful
because all you are doing is restricting food
for a few days. All of this is to say: the only
thing a detox or juice cleanse actually does to
your body is make you hungry and nutrient
deprived for a few days. If you want to go
ahead with a detox/cleansing be prepared
before your cleanse, you will be better able to
relax and enjoy and allow your body to go
through its healing and detoxification process
more effectively.
caffeine (tea and coffee), sugar, salt and all
processed food items. Avoid alcohol and
nicotine. Go shopping and stock up on fresh
organic fruits and vegetables as much as you
can find. The evening before eat a light meal,
such as a salad, a vegetable stir fry or a
vegetable soup. Have a relaxing bath and go
to bed early. Feel great that you are doing a
wonderful thing for you. It is very important to
come off your cleanse slowly. If not, you risk
undoing all the good you have just done for
your body. After a cleanse you often feel so
much better, lighter and with a lot of mental
clarity. You will likely have more energy,
clearer skin and better digestion. So break
your cleanse slowly. How you come off is
almost as important as the cleanse itself.
Continue for at least the first few days to
drink hot lemon water and do your stretching/
exercise in the mornings. Continue also to
eat primarily vegetable based dishes and the
more you eat them raw, and the more green
leafy vegetables you can keep in your diet,
the more beneficial it is for your body.
Continue to drink 2 litres of water a day for at
least the first few days. Eating heavy or
unhealthy foods can be especially tempting
now, but this is the time when you need to
use your will and strength to come off it
properly. It doesn’t matter if you do a one day
cleanse or a whole week the day after you
stopped is the most important day to watch
what you ingest. There, it is not very difficult
to go for one day on a cleanse and
depending how you feel afterwards you might
consider changing you food intake to a bit
more on the raw side. Next month we will
cover straight juicing. I have a fact sheet for a

place. Find a good relaxation audio to make
you feel calm; consider using a relaxing
essential oil such as Sandalwood or
Lavender oil, both are very relaxing. Avoid
drinking tap water and opt instead for filtered
or mineral water. Two days before starting
your cleanse eat more whole fresh plant
foods, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds
especially the green vegetables, whether raw
or cooked. Cut down on wheat, dairy, meat,

‘Remembering THEM’ Exhibition Launch

A group of people gathered in the garden of the Dead Finish Museum, Beverley, on Tuesday a ernoon 31st March
2015, to remember the impact of the First World War on the local community. Almost one hundred years a er
some of Beverley’s young men faced the horror of the ba les at Gallipoli, descendants and other family members
welcomed the opportunity to inspect the Beverley Historical Society’s exhibi on ‘Remembering THEM’.
The Society focused on the ‘THEM’
in the exhibi on’s tle and re‐
searched the names of people on
Beverley’s War Memorials as well
as people ac ve in the town and
district
throughout
the
dura on of the war. Informa on
was gathered from the websites of
the Australian War Memorial and
the Na onal Archives of Australia,
digi sed copies of the local
newspaper, the Beverley Times,
local history publica ons and
family knowledge.
This has resulted in display boards highligh ng the soldiers who gave
their lives and the places they are buried; those who returned and their
lives post war; those who helped on the home front, the fundraising
organisa ons they supported and the movies on offer at the Beverley
Mechanic’s Ins tute.
With the assistance of officers from the WA Museum and members of
the RWAHS the exhibi on features five professionally designed panels
that give an overview of WW1 and its a ermath in WA, together with
informa on specific to Beverley and district.
A secure showcase houses precious family keepsakes loaned to the
Museum for the exhibi on. These include medals, plaques and scrolls
from soldiers who were killed ‘over there’; and a diary, le ers,
postcards and gi s that were sent or brought home. The electronic
showcase, the panels and a banner were provided with monies from
Lo erywest.
The exhibi on has transformed two rooms at the Dead Finish Museum
with photographs, newspaper ar cles, prints, posters and other items

of the period from the Museum’s collec on.
There is also a con nuous loop of images
presented on a computer screen. All of this is
complemented by the over 120 bright red
poppies kni ed by a group of locals.
The a ernoon’s program included a welcome
from Society member, Di Smith, who acted as
MC, and an explana on of the research from
project convenor, Morag Whitney. Morag chose
to highlight the stories of four of ‘THEM’:
orphan Sydney Igna us Campbell who died on
the Somme; Richard Reeves Collard an 18 year
old Aboriginal lad who needed his parent’s
permission to enlist; Jessie Chris na Cli on the
only woman on Beverley’s war memorial; and
Florence Susan Walker, an energe c woman who was very ac ve in suppor ng the troops.
Central Wheatbelt MLA, Mia Davies, spoke about the importance of community then and now and Dee Ridgway,
President, Shire of Beverley, completed the agenda by commen ng on how the various local groups had worked
together on this project, before declaring the ‘Remembering THEM’ exhibi on launched.
The twenty eight people present then enjoyed a tradi onal country a ernoon tea and a further chance to examine
the exhibi on. The Society received many compliments on our efforts and promises to come back again as there is
such a lot to take in. ‘Remembering THEM’ is open all four days of Easter, Anzac Day a ernoon and weekends un l
September 2015.

The LDAA would like to highlight a few additional points:
 Not all Lyme patients experience the seizures that Amy and Amara
endure.
 Lyme seizures are 'atypical' and thus are often labelled 'psychogenic'
and seen as not real.
 The majority of Lyme patients experience 'invisible illness' which comes
with it's own extensive set of challenges, including denial by medial
professionals and lack of understanding from family and friends (no matter
how well-meaning). The 'invisibly ill' Lyme patients are also fighting for their
lives.

News straight from the broomstick!
Hope everyone enjoyed the recent rains, I know I did. Some green coming through
and my baby trees loved it. I recently had a bit of a worry with the disappearance of
one of my kangaroo boys. His name is Skip and he has survived 2 very serious
conditions as a joey. He was given to me from a member of the public who had kept
him until he was almost dead from malnutrition, dehydration and hyperthermia. This
poor little man was so ill my vet didn’t think he would survive but we put him on the
drip for 3 days and worked on rectifying his severe starvation, because his
temperature was so low I couldn’t feed him until his temperature was over 35 degrees
as a hypothermic joey cannot metabolise the formula. We had him on artificial heat
until he could maintain his own body temperature which took about 5 days. He
survived this and went on to be a healthy young man and then he came down with
tetanus as everyone knows this is a very serious condition and normally fatal lucky
for him I realised his condition quickly and got him to the vets before the convulsions
had started so we were able to save him. It is a very hard job to save them from this
but Skip survived. Two near death experiences before he had even turned 18 months
old we called him Skip the miracle man. He is now about 3 years old and so
handsome but last Thursday night he disappeared; normally all my released
kangaroos spend all night locked in my release pen and let out during the day. He always comes in for the night
but he didn’t show. This same night a professional kangaroo shooter was shooting over the river from my place
and I know my wild mob go over there as it is very close to my place. This boy had over 1500 dollars in vet bills
and had shown such love and happiness for life that I feel so sad and gutted to think he may have fallen victim to
this callous industry where they decapitate or bludgeon little joeys to death after shooting their mothers. I love,
care for, get medical attention and attempt to protect this mob of wild kangaroos they are not just nameless
animals. I walk amongst them and would give my life to protect them but I feel powerless to help these guys. I am
hoping to be able to protect this paddock from shooters but this is still work in progress and I will keep looking for
Skip who may have been so frightened by the shooting that he is hiding out. I was terrified myself hearing the gun
shots and my daughter who owns the house near the paddock had to calm her horses down because the spotlight
was going in through her horse yard and into her house. She was terrified her horses could have been shot or
injured trying to escape the spotlights and gun shots. The people leasing this paddock were very understanding
about this situation. Thanks guys.
Another sad incident was a kangaroo hanging in a fence this young male was lucky to have been noticed so quickly
and his suffering was ended quickly. I had done my Dump Road run and checked the fences and there were no
problems with the wildlife on that Road. I do this every morning and evening and several times through the night.
About an hour and a half later Anthony from the motor cross club alerted us to the roo and we went down cut him
out of the fence and then sedated him and administered pain relief and I then assessed him and he had a seriously
broken knee and would never walk or hop again. Sadly we had to euthanize this boy but thanks to Anthony he was
not hanging in the fence for very long. RIP little man and thank you Anthony.
Now some good news we had a Boo Book Owl bought in this owl had been found in Grass Valley picked up by Sue
in Northam dropped of at the vets in York for them to check him out and I picked him up from there and bought
him in to care. He was eating fantastically inside but when I put him in the owl cage he wouldn’t eat so after a
couple of weeks of bringing him in to feed and taking him back out I took him to Eastern Hills Vet and they could
find nothing wrong with him either so it was decided we would take him to Kanyana for their specialist bird vet to
look at. He discovered a small eye injury that was coursing a partial blindness and after some treatment he was
successfully released with a group of juvenile Boo Books so that was a lot of networking with different people and
organisations and in the end led to a success and happy ending. Thank you to everyone involved with this little
man.
The best care story of all is my little bat. This bat was found lying on the
footpath in Brookton and bought to us. He had gone into Torper from the
rain and fallen asleep and fell out of the tree he was roosting in. Torper is
like a small hibernation when weather conditions are not good. Once he was
warmed up he had to be fed and boy could he eat. I would catch moths and
put them in his newly bought Bat Cave for him to hunt and eat. Watching
him was better than watching TV his antics were so fascinating. I had not
worked with Bats before and had to find out from other bat carers
what to do. This little male Lesser Long eared Bat has opened my heart to a
world of Bats and am looking forward to looking after more of these
delightful little critters. Did you know than one micro bat will consume 1.2 million mosquitoes in their lifetime plus
moths and other insects? I say bring on more bats and help lessen the mozzies that make our life so miserable.

Beverley Bowling Club
On the weekend of the 28th and
29th of March 'Carnival Weekend'
was held, with the Ferndale Pairs
being played on the Saturday.
This was sponsored by the
Ferndale Grazing Company and
Beverley Electrical Services, and
our many thanks go to the Smith
families for their support. The
winners of this event were David
Overington and Don Minchin.
Runners-up were Geoff Rayner
and David Bell. The AM round
went to Greg Barrett-Lennard and
Reg Behn, while the PM round
was won by Peter Fleay and Jeff
Murray.
The Fours competition on the
Sunday was sponsored by Emfert
Fertilizer and Beverley Farm
Services and once again the Club
thanks them kindly for their
support. The winners team was
made up of Brad Copping, Daniel

Bremner. The Runner-up team
was K. Sumner's team from

The closing day for the 2014/2015
season was held on Sunday the
19th of April, with the AGM held
at 12 noon, followed by a
Sausage Sizzle then an afternoon
of mixed bowls for the
HR Rushton Trophy. The winners
of this event were Geoff Rayner,
Mike Carthew, Glenys Collins and
Jodie Bell with 2 wins.
Runners-up were David Bell, Lyn
Mactaggart, Brandon Tauri and
Verna McKelvie-Wilson with 1 win
plus 3 shots from Peter Fleay,
David Overington, Dot White and
Ron Napier who had 1 win plus 1
shot. Our grateful thanks again
go to Rushton's for their

Decision making under pressure - Rushing but not ruining the moment!
Coming off the back of some good rain across the State there is definitely some positivity and no doubt plenty of
action beginning to happen in the paddocks, but before we can take action on something we have to make a
decision first.
We make decisions every single day, sometimes without even knowing it, these are often the easy and simple
decisions that are part of our routine of daily life. Decisions that are of a more complex nature, involve more risk, or
a decision that has to be made under challenging circumstances or pressure can certainly cause us and those
around us a bit of stress … this is normal!
Being in a position to be able to make a decision is a good thing!
For many people making decisions may not be an issue, I’m sure we have all met someone who seems confident,
sure of themselves and likes to be in control and take charge of situations and the decisions that go with it. While
others of us may be a little more indecisive, seek others advice or approval first, or maybe just need a little more
time to think about things. Regardless of which end of the scale we are at, it is a positive to be in a position to be
able to make decisions, as this means at least two things; 1. We are in a position to have a say and make a choice;
2. We are not procrastinating.
So for those of us who sometimes struggle with our decision making process why is this so? What factors can
impact on our decision making?
There are a number of things at play that can influence decision making. Listed below are a few examples, which
are not limited to nor conclusive that all these things will impact on your decision making, rather some things to
consider.

Uncertainty: No matter who we are or what we do, none of us know which way the dice will roll. None of us
want to make the wrong decision, but sometimes this cannot be avoided.

Complexity: This can depend on the nature of our business or situation, e.g. Farming involves so many
different interrelated factors that quite often need to be considered (financial, weather, equipment, labour,
cost/price).

Consequences: Something we have all tasted at one stage or another both good and bad. We still need to
consider what are the consequences - Risk Vs Reward.

Alternatives: Have we considered them? Where do we get our information from that may inform us of all
available options?

Interpersonal issues: Who else is affected by our decisions, how will others react? What frame of mind are
we in when making decisions? What else do we have going on in our lives, what’s our priorities?
What can we do to help this process?

Try and create a positive space.

PPPPPP – Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

Be realistic – look at the factors impacting on our particular circumstances.

The grass is not always greener. Don’t be influenced by what others are doing.

Stick to your plan/process that you are comfortable with.
“Stay committed to your decisions but stay flexible to your approach”.

Football season is underway, and it's been a slightly different start with two night games to begin with, however the
players and supporters are embracing the change. We closed out our pre-season with scratch matches against
Ellenbrook and Corrigin, and there were many encouraging signs leading into the season proper.
There's plenty of football both at home and away for you to feast on this month, so we hope to see our supporters
at the games.
Congratulations to Scott Minchin for once again being named our League Captain for the 2015 Season, and to Dale
Wansbrough who has been appointed our League Vice-Captain. We would like to thank our out-going Skipper
Robbie Wansbrough for his contribution to the Club in this role.

BEVERLEY LADIES GOLF
The 2015 season was launched on Saturday 11th April 2015 in hot conditions.
The first event of the season was the T Bone and Sons Ambrose in 3’s.
Twenty One participated in the day and it was great to see a good number of
members turn out to play.
The winning team on the day was Ali Lewis , Luke Gollan and Stephen Gollan with
a nett score of 58.83. They were followed by the team comprising of Bruce
Kilpatrick, Thomas McLean and Wayde McLean with a nett score of 60.16 they
also had the Best Gross score with 71.
Once again the club would sincerely like to thank Brian Tyrer for his continued
support of the club.
The season got underway on the 15
April. Glorious weather and the
course was greening up already, a
week later it was looking a bit sad.
The competition winner for the Ali
Lewis Trophy was Glenys Collins
with 36 points.

The winner of the 2015 Diggers Cup was Yvonne Hobbs who had a very
impressive 44 Stableford points, to win by three points from Mark Bickley who had
37 points.
Glenys and Jane looked for our trees
today, checking on their welfare.
Once again warm weather greeted 10 players on Saturday 18th April who were
competing in a Stableford event sponsored by Darryl Sims.
The winner of the day was Mark Bickley on a countback from Mark Armstrong
with 33 points and in third place was Liam Gollan with 29 points.
Thanks are extended to Darryl Sims for his ongoing support of the club.

Our Quiz Night kicks off the start of our 2015 season (our first game will be the 2nd May) so come along and show your

2015 Hockey Season Our season is approaching at a rapid pace. Our first game for the season will be held on Saturday 2nd May in BEVERLEY at
3pm so we would love to see everyone come down and support the girls in their first game! At the me of print, our
remaining season fixtures had not yet been finalised. Once we know what they are, we will keep everyone informed in future
Blarney Notes.
Training is every Thursday from 6pm. If you are interested in playing Hockey this Season, why not come down and see what
its all about.
2015 Senior Playing Fees are due by 2nd May 2015. Please fill in the registra on form, return and make payment by cash or
EFT our BSB: 016‐540 Account: 201349436 totaling $160. If you have any ques ons regarding the payment, please contact

Why not become a Social Member of the Hockey Club. Social Membership is only $30 for the year and your support to the
Club is greatly appreciated. Social Members are welcome to any game but are also welcome to a end training sessions for
general fitness.

Beverley Netball Club
Two teams have been selected and the season will
start with a round robin competition in Brookton on
Friday 01 May at 6.30pm. The club has organised the
community bus for the evening and we encourage all
players to commute together, please note there will
be a $5 per player bus fee.
The committee will be trying arrange the bus for all
the out of town games, please let your team contact
know if you are interested.
Team training is on Wednesday nights at 6pm - 7pm
at the courts. Extra training will be available on
Friday nights that we are not fixture to play.

Beverley Horse and Pony Club
Another month has flown by, our April rally was a fantastic day with loads of fun had by all our riders. The
lead line group were ready and rearing to go on Saturday the 18th April with Bethany on Gidget, Aaron on
Starlight, Molly on Pippin and Jessica on Paddy. They started the day with a flatwork lesson with Tess Hawke and
Marion Burnes that focused on how to get their ponies to go and stop smoothly. Then they had some fun finding
all the grooming equipment in the arena, naming each piece and explaining what it is used for. The ponies and
the riders had a short break for morning tea and then they were off with the knowledgeable Mrs. Peart for horse
handling skills and how to use those grooming tools effectively (look out ponies). Now the ponies were spotless,
time to re-saddle and off for a ride out with Jess Appelbee and Marion Byrnes to learn about road rules. Phew..
not finished yet...Lunch and then an afternoon learning and playing the Prince Phillip Mounted Games
(PPMG). What a big day for the smallest members of our club and they were all still smiling by the end but I
think their parents and coaches were ready for a foot massage!
In the Arabian group Tealah trialed a new pony called Woody, Emily trialed a new pony Flinky, Bronte with her
new mount Cheeky and Kip on her new pony Gwain. Tahlia on Dixie and Grace on Primrose were all put through
their paces with Maria Weilbel. She did an amazing job as half the class were riding new ponies. Maria followed
the dressage lesson with a clever serpentine jumping pattern that had both ponies and riders thinking carefully
about where they need to be for each jump. Mrs Peart then had the group identifying, explaining and
demonstrating the use of horse rugs. In the afternoon the riders joined with the younger groups to learn and
practice the PPMG.
Our warm blood group; Chloe on Rusty, Amy on Tom, Jessamin on Playboy, and finally Vicky on Rusty; were
coached by Judy Rose, who had them also practising their serpentines in flat work which followed through to their
jumping lesson. Judy challenged them by making them ride one handed while serpentining up and down the
arena. Bianca borrowed her Tahlia’s horse and joined in for show jumping too. In the afternoon the girls practised
their lunging skills for up coming exams and to help them deal with stressed horses (and riders!) at events.
Hopefully next month I can report great results from Bronte and Vicky who attended Dryandra Pony Club’s two
day event on the ANZAC weekend. Our next rally will be on Sunday the 17th of May, new members always
