Autumn 2014 - Filling Memorial Home of Mercy
Focus on Filling Autumn 2014 Welcome Home The door swings open on a new life for Chris after a lifetime spent at Filling Home. Each new day is a new experience. p.4 2 Autumn 2014 Second Birth We are children of the light. Nevertheless, a touch of sadness has come to us -- even in this Season of Joy. The names of loved ones come to mind. They have entered the Church Triumphant. Not so very long ago, they were by our side as we sang of Christmas Angels. The words have special meaning this year. We know that God understands, “for we have not a high priest who can VW\JM\W]KPML_Q\P\PMNMMTQVOWNW]ZQVÅZUQ\QM[º There is a passage in Revelation with a promise to faithful servants of God -- “those who overcome _QTTVW\JMP]Z\Ja\PM[MKWVLLMI\Pº Pastor Don Wukotich, President & CEO Charles Wesley understood these words when he wrote of Angels and their song of the Christ Child: Hail the heav’n born Prince of Peace! Hail the sun of righteousness! Light and Life to all He brings, Ris’n with healing in his wings. Mild he lays his glory by, Born that we no more may die, Born to raise each child of earth, Born to give us second birth. -Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Autumn 2014 PROM 3 limitations, so the students received well-rounded exposure to the kind of conditions they may encounter. No, we’re not talking about a fancy dance. PROM stands for Passive Range of Motion, and on September 24th-PSSPUN/VTLZZ[HMMILJHTLJLY[PÄLKZWLJPHSPZ[Z in this discipline. A 20-week, Advanced Passive Range of Motion course is offered on an annual basis to staff who would like to increase their knowledge and further their ability to aid residents in their daily therapy needs. By the time each of these 14 specialists graduated from the program, they had become experts in the way the joints of the human body move. In our daily experience, we move our bodies in many ways and directions –our joints are “actively” ranged in doing so. For most of Filling Homes’ residents, due to disabilities that make it impossible for them to move their bodies without assistance, these joints must be ranged by someone else to stave off the body’s natural tendency to contracture, or experience muscle shortening which results in distortion or deformity. When the ranging is done for you, it is called “passive” range of motion. Each joint is subjected to repetitive movement by the specialist, which causes the joints to loosen HUKILJVTLTVYLÅL_PISL;OPZPZIV[OYLSH_PUNHUK soothing to the recipient of the exercise. For this reason, Janet Petzoldt, Filling Homes’ 6JJ\WH[PVUHS;OLYHWPZ[HUKPUZ[Y\J[VYVM[OLJV\YZL spends each of the 20, one-hour sessions explaining, describing, showing, and practicing the 35 different movements of joints, their names and functional usages. When it came time for actual resident practice, Petzoldt and the students had plenty of help. Some of Filling Homes’ residents were only too happy to contribute. ,HJOVM[OLZL¸YLZPKLU[HZZPZ[HU[Z¹OHZ\UPX\LÅL_PIPSP[` A: Mallori Calvelage (COTA) demonstrates passive range of motion with Krissy. He started expressing more interest in the world outside of Filling Home. Filling Homes’ mission clearly states that our desire is for every individual to live with as much independence as possible, and there are many ways in which this is achieved. Each person that receives services either through Filling Homes’ Intermediate Care Facility or through Supported Living Services, is matched with a guardian to advocate for their needs and desires, as well as make decisions regarding care. In many cases, this is a parent, OV^L]LYV[OLYZHYLLUSPZ[LKPM[OLWHYLU[PZUV[SP]PUNVY\UHISL[VM\SÄSS[OPZK\[` ¸7HZ[VY*SH\ZZLU^HZZWLHRPUNH[H-LZ[P]HSVM;HISLZL]LU[[OH[0H[[LUKLK`LHYZHNVHUKOL^HZKLZJYPIPUN what a guardian does explaining that Filling Home was in need of guardians for some of the residents.” shared Sherrie Kruse, “It touched me, and when Chris’ guardian passed away six years ago, I was happy to step into the position.” Kruse, who has been employed on and off with Filling Homes for 30 `LHYZOHZRUV^U*OYPZMVYX\P[LZVTL[PTLZVP[^HZHUH[\YHSÄ[ Chris, whose family lives on the east coast, knows that Kruse is there to advocate for him and likes having her nearby. Chris had been asked every year if he is happy living at Filling Home or if he would like to live somewhere else. He had always been content right where he was, but recently he started talking about homes PU[OLJVTT\UP[`^OLYLZVTLVMOPZMYPLUKZSP]LK(ZHS^H`Z;OVTHZ was there to help him explore his options. After touring a few homes, he settled on one of the new, 4-person homes built by Filling Homes through a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. At that point, Chris was insistent about his desire to make the move. Once a home became available, the proper paperwork was processed and all that was left to do was throw the going away party! About a week before the move-in date, Chris’ Filling Home family baked a cake, made signs, blew up balloons and turned out to bid him a fond farewell. He ^HZNP]LUTHU`NPM[Z;OPUNZLZWLJPHSS` for his new home like the Swiffer Wet Jet that Kruse and her husband gave him. She knows he will put it to good use. Ashlie Thomas, Chris’ long-time QIDP, helps him with the transition to his new home. Although it was a fun time for all, this was a bittersweet moment for many of the staff and residents who have been with Chris for a very long time. “Every day, for as long as I can remember, Chris is collecting boxes near the door as I come in to work in the morning,” shared Sue Funchion, Health Services Coordinator, “It’s strange and a little sad to not see him there anymore, but I’m so happy for him.” 9VZL*HSK^LSS[OL:\WWVY[LK3P]PUN;LHT3LHKLYMVY[OLOVTL[OH[*OYPZUV^SP]LZPUOHZZOHYLK[OH[*OYPZ is doing very well. He has already learned how to move his own laundry through the washer and dryer and do dishes. “You wonder how he will adjust to such a change after living at Filling Home all that time, but he loves it,” said Caldwell, “He loves his home and he loves his ability to get out more often. He spends his evenings bowling, going to art club, and swimming. He’s pretty happy!” 6 Autumn 2014 The Women’s Guild of Filling Homes...50 years in the making! ;OPZ`LHYTHYRZ[OLth year since the Women’s Guild was organized to “render services, individually or collectively, as suggested or proposed by the Filling Home”.
