August Events
Wednesdays, August 1, 8, 15, 22, & 29: Sit and Stitch @ 1:00 pm. Join other crafters at this weekly
gathering to share crafting and conversation. Gatherings are every Wednesday from 1 – 3 pm. New members are
welcome to join at any time! Bring your hobby or craft and come for lots of laughs, food, great company and
experienced help!
Wednesday, August 1: Genealogy Club @ Your Library at 6:30 pm. Whether you have been
researching your family tree for years or just want to start, you are invited to join other genealogy
researchers in the library's genealogy room to help each other with research, share tips and questions.
This group meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm. Helpful handouts and laptop computers
are available to use.
Thursday, August 2: Handmade Book Making Class @ 6:00 pm. Cathy Recker will teach
this class on making handmade books using photos. This two hour class is free and open to anyone
eight years or older. Participants will need to provide at least five photos (4 x 6 inch or smaller) for
their book. Photos can be on photo paper or computer paper. Participants may bring scrapbooking
materials to embellish their book. Registration is required.
Friday, August 3: Landfills 101 @ 1:00 pm. This session will explain what currently happens to
our garbage when it arrives at the landfill and how we can cut down on the amount we are burying.
This program will also discuss the future of landfills including changes at the Dubuque landfill. Bev
Wagner, DMASWA Education Coordinator, will present this one hour program.
Saturday, August 4: Family Movies @ Your Library presents "The Cat From Outer Space"
@ 2:00 pm. A UFO is stranded on earth and impounded by the US government. Its pilot, a cat with a collar that
has special powers, including the ability to allow the cat to communicate with humans, has eluded the authorities
and needs help in order to reclaim and repair his ship to get back home. Rated G. (104 min.)
Monday, August 6: Books for Lunch Book Discussion @ 12:00 noon. This group gathers on the first
Monday of each month to discuss different books selected by the group. This months selection is Unbroken by
Laura Hillenbrand. The September selection is Drunk, Divorced and Covered in Cat Hair by Laurie Petty. Bring
your lunch, if you wish. Dessert and beverages are provided by the participants or the Friends of the Library. New
members are welcome to join at any time! Copies of the book are available to borrow from the library.
Mondays, August 6 & 20: Dungeons and Dragons Players Club @ 6:00 pm. Join us for this
monthly gaming event for D and D players! This group meets the first and third Mondays of every month
at 6:00 pm. The Library will have materials available but feel free to bring your own. All ages and skill
levels welcome. New players are welcome at any time.
Tuesday, August 7: Inspirational Fiction: A Novel Approach to Faith book discussion series
@ 7:00 pm. Join us on alternating Tuesdays from July 10 thru September 18 @ 7:00 pm for a book discussion series featuring Inspirational Fiction. This six-book series includes books that weave religious
faith into the characters and storylines. This is the third of six meetings. The book selection for this meeting is This Present Darkness by Frank E. Peretti.

Saturday, August 11: Family Movies @ Your Library presents “The Secret World of Arrietty”
@ 2:00 pm. In a secret world hidden beneath the floorboards, little people called Borrowers live quietly among
us. But when tenacious and tiny Arrietty is discovered by Shawn, a human boy, their secret and forbidden
friendship blossoms into an extraordinary adventure. Rated G. (94 min.)
Monday, August 13: Between the Covers Movies presents “The Princess Bride” @ 7:00 pm. A
classic fairy tale, with swordplay, giants, an evil prince, a beautiful princess, and yes, some kissing (as read by a
kindly grandfather). Rated PG. (98 min.)
Tuesday, August 14: Author Visit with Dale Kueter @ 1:00 pm. Dale will join us and talk about his latest book,
The Smell of the Soil, Writing Your Stories. He will discuss the importance of sharing family stories as well as the
publishing process for this book. Join him for some of his fun family stories.
Tuesday, August 14: Tuesday Nite @ the Movies showing of "Clash of the Titans" @ 7:00 pm. Perseus, mortal son
of Zeus, battles the minions of the underworld to stop them from conquering the Earth and the heavens. Stars Sam Worthington,
Ralph Fiennes, and Liam Neeson. Rated PG-13. (106 min.)
Thursday, August 16: AARP Driver Safety Program from 9:30 to 2:30 pm. This is a classroom
refresher course especially designed for drivers age 50 and over but all ages welcome. The class does not include
driving or tests. Cost for materials: AARP members $12, non-members $14. There is a special rate for current and
retired teachers and school personnel of $5 this summer. Arrive at 9:15 to complete paper work and pay for
materials. Registration requested as there must be seven students to hold this class.
Saturday, August 18: Family Movies @ Your Library presents "The Lorax" @ 2:00 pm. A 12-year-old boy
searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story
of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world. Stars Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, and Danny DeVito.
Rated PG. (86 min.)
Monday, August 20: Back to School Celebration for Mom & Dad from 8:00 to 10:00 am. It’s the
first day of school so drop those kids off then come by the library and celebrate the beginning of a new school
year with coffee, juice, and donuts!
Monday, August 20: Between the Covers presents: Using Yoga To Create Calm @ 7:00 pm.
Join Doris Wessels as she leads the group with yoga poses and an explanation of this form of centering for your hectic
daily life.
Tuesday, August 21: Registration Begins for Fall Story Time and Wee Read. Parents and
caregivers are encouraged to sign up their preschoolers for the Fall sessions of Preschool Story Time and Wee
Read. Story Time is open to 3, 4 and 5 year olds who have not been in Kindergarten. Wee Read is for children
under 3 and their caregiver. Programs will run September 5th through November 15th and will be held on
Wednesdays and Thursdays. Call the library for times and to register as space is limited.

Thursday, August 23: Paranormal Book Club @ 6:00 pm: The paranormal book club is a meeting of people who enjoy
the creepier side of life. Discussions will cover books, movies, comic books, etc. - anything dealing with the
supernatural. Topics will range from oddball styles of media to horror. Some of the material will have adult themes
and may not be appropriate for the young or squeamish. Meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of every
month at 6:00 pm. For this meeting, the group will watch pieces of several episodes from the TV show
Supernatural and a discussion will follow.
Monday, August 27: Between the Covers Movies presents “The Librarian: Quest for the Spear” @ 7:00 pm.
Flynn an over 30 "professional student," is banned from more classes, since he already has 22 degrees. Unexpectedly hired by a
mysterious library, he's soon pursuing a stolen artifact from the library, a pursuit taking him to far off lands. Stars Noah Wyle,
Sonya Walger, and Bob Newhart. Not Rated. (92 min.)
Tuesday, August 28: Tuesday Nite @ the Movies showing of "Wrath of the Titans" @ 7:00 pm. Perseus braves
the treacherous underworld to rescue his father, Zeus, captured by his son, Ares, and brother Hades who unleash the ancient
Titans upon the world. Sequel to Clash of the Titans. Stars Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson. Rated PG-13. (99 min.)
Wednesday, August 29: School Day Movies presents “An American Tail” @ 2:00 pm. Follow the humorous and
dramatic adventures of Fievel, a little boy mouse who journeys from Russia to America with his family in the late 19th Century to
seek a new life free from cat persecution. Rated G. (80 min.)
Thursday, August 30: Author visit with Bob Meyer @ 3:00 pm. Join author Bob Meyer as he talks about his newly
published book Small Town Baseball-Big League Dreams. Learn about baseball in Eastern Iowa including interviews with fans,
players and coaches from 30 small towns including Jerry Roling, Tom Jenks, and Mark Breitbach.

James Kennedy Public Library Receives Grant!
The Friends of the James Kennedy Public Library in Dyersville, Iowa has received a grant award of $6,367.00
from the Dubuque Racing Association, Ltd., to fund the purchase of computer workstations for children. The
funding of this project allows the Friends of the James Kennedy Public Library to purchase two Early Literacy
Stations (for children ages 2 to 10) and one AfterSchool Edge (for children 6 to 14). Each computer station
comes preloaded with 40+ age-appropriate, fun, engaging, and educational programs. By using the
educational software and programs found on the AWE Early Literacy Station and AfterSchool Edge computer
workstations, children will not only learn program content, but will also become
more computer literate. The computers will be installed this Fall.
It’s not too late to showcase your special talents for the CHAIR-ITY FUNDRAISER!
Pick up a wooden chair, stool, or TV tray from the library (or provide your own - must be wooden, please), decorate it any
way you like and return it to the library by September 10, 2012. Items will be displayed in the library and showcased at the
Taste of the Midwest on September 26, 2012. The silent auction will begin at the Taste and conclude at 3:00 pm on
Sunday, October 14, 2012. All proceeds benefit the interactive media collection (board games, video games, CD Rom
games/early literacy games).

The James Kennedy Public Library is pleased to partner with the Riverview
Center to present “Reading for Change” a traveling book club for the
Dyersville area. This new book club will meet on the first Thursday of each
month to discuss a book centered on the topic of sexual violence. Jessica
Pape, a Violence Prevention Educator with Riverview Center, will facilitate
the discussion and copies of the books will be available to check out from the
library. Room by Emma Donoghue will be the first selection. We will meet
for a discussion of this book in the Hoffman Room of the James Kennedy
Public Library from 6:00 to 7:30 pm on Thursday, September 6. This club is
appropriate for all ages Middle School and older. Registration is requested to
ensure that enough copies of the books are available.

book on the 2012 Adult SRP. Thinking Between the Covers will be the theme
for activities and refreshments. Anyone who participated in the JKPL Adult
Summer Reading Program is invited. Winners of the “Book Lover’s Basket”
and other prizes will be able to pick up their prizes.
