Danny Russel Presents: Abraham Lincoln Monday, August 15th 5:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. All ages welcome Hilarity and heartbreak abound as Abraham Lincoln traces his amazing journey from a log cabin to the White House. Learn about his Indiana youth (age 7-21) where frontier life was precarious, disease a constant companion, and death a hovering presence. How did he overcome hardscrabble poverty, numerous business failures and one undistinguished term in Congress? How did he win court cases, political arguments, and the hearts and minds of a nation? For Lincoln, “all men created equal” was a clarion call – bringing him national recognition in debates with Stephen Douglas as he decried the “peculiar institution” as a moral and social evil, leading to his nomination for the presidency, inspiring the Emancipation Proclamation, justifying the “people’s conflict” known as the Civil War, and resulting in the 13th Amendment which abolished slavery permanently. Summer Reading Program This year’s summer reading program was a big success! Read S’more Books! led to camping and forest animals as the theme for the program. Not only did the library help kids have fun this summer, but we also helped prevent the summer slide-when kids lose valuable reading skills over the summer break. The library offered programs at all four locations featuring events like outdoor movies, storytelling, building solar ovens, story time, crafts, and of course, making s’mores! Over 685 children, teens and adults attended these events in June and July. Over 421 children and teens registered for the reading program with 250 completing their required books or hours. There were 132 adults who registered for the reading program, too, with 97 completing their required six books. The library appreciates all the positive comments from library patrons, all the readers. And all the people, businesses and organizations that helped to make our program a success. We couldn’t do it with out you!
