FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Friends,
Congratulations to the students who
participated in the School Sports Victoria Cross
Country last week and thank you to Mr
Jennings who organised this event. As always,
our students were very well behaved and
participated enthusiastically.
It was terrific to see so many parents at our
assembly last Friday where Miss Kane’s class
shared with us their understanding of the Holy
Spirit and read about the Spirit-filled people in
their lives. Our next assembly will be at 10am
following mass, on June 3rd which will be led
by 5/6BA. Parents and friends are always
welcome at our assemblies to share and celebrate the great learning and student achievement at St
Fidelis’.
We have our first school closure day next Tuesday May 31. There will be no school on this day. Next
Friday we have a whole school mass at 9:15 to celebrate the feast of The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Families and friends are always welcome to join us for mass.
Next Wednesday June 1st from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Kath Murdoch will be presenting a parent information
session about learning at St Fidelis’. Kath is an expert in how students learn and how to engage them
in their learning. We are very fortunate to have Kath working with our staff and I am so pleased that
she is able to present to parents. I strongly encourage all parents to attend this presentation which will
provide you with a greater understanding of learning and teaching at St Fidelis’.
I hope you have a great week,
Kevin Gleeson.
3/4JK shared their class prayer at Friday’s assembly.
Dear God,
As we begin our new day, we remember how lucky we are to have our families and
friends and to have good food to eat and clean water to drink.
Please help us to have a happy day,
where we treat each other nicely and try our best to be good thinkers and learners.
Please help us to be safe and to look after each other.
Thank you for all you have given us.
Amen
ST FIDELIS’ SCHOOL PRESENTS …
An evening with leading Educational
Consultant - Kath Murdoch
A unique opportunity for St Fidelis’ parents, carers,
families and friends to hear from leading Educational
Consultant Kath Murdoch, who has worked extensively
with the staff at St Fidelis’ for the last seven years.
Kath is an experienced teacher, author, university
lecturer and popular consultant who has worked for
many years in schools throughout Australia, New
Zealand, Asia, America and Europe. She is widely
respected for her work in the field of inquiry based
learning and integrative curriculum in which she has
taught, researched and published for well over 20 years.
Growing Great Learners!
How can we help our children learn to learn? How can we grow them as
confident, curious and creative learners?
It’s an exciting time to be a learner! Never before has there been such access to
information, such potential for communication and such opportunity to create and
innovate. Our children are moving into a complex future in which problem solving,
creative and critical thinking, agile use of technologies and strong cross-cultural
communication skills will be vital. With increasing and changing information at our
fingertips, we have the responsibility as teachers and parents to help children grow as
learners.
At least as important as ‘what’ they learn in school is HOW they learn and how they learn to
‘be’. Navigating complex futures means our students need more than ‘knowing’ – they
need to be curious, critical thinkers, creative communicators, collaborators, adept
researchers and responsible self-managers. Come along to hear Kath share the
experiences of our teachers in building children’s learning assets – and some great ideas
for ways you can nurture your child as a powerful learner at home.

Wednesday 1st June
Time:
6.30pm to 7:30pm

LEARNING AREA NEWS – YEAR 1/2
As part of our History inquiry ‘What clues about the past are here in the present? The Year
1/2 students participated in a local walking tour of our neighbourhood. Looking at old
houses, buildings and churches gave us an insight into the past. We learnt about the history
of Coburg West Primary School, ‘The Progress Theatre’ and St Fidelis’ Church. The students
were very good at finding clues about the past!
There is an old house in Gordon Street
that was called “The Manor on the Hill”.
It was built in 1904. Eliza M (1/2CC)
The Progress Theatre used to show
movies but now it is a ballet school.
Damian M (1/2CC)
There were movies but now there is dancing in the
Progress Theatre. Lola (1/2KO)
I learnt that Saint Fidelis’ School was built before
Saint Fidelis’ Church. Alice (1/2LS)
The Anglican church in Coburg is very old.
Christian L (1/2KO)
The horses used to go in the laneways.
James M (1/2JF)
I learnt that wrought iron is very old. It was used gates,
fences and balconies.
James F (1/2LS)
West Coburg Primary School is older than Saint
Fidelis’. It was built in 1916.

LITERACY NEWS
… Mrs. Janine Turville, L & T Leader
This Wednesday the students will be participating in the National Simultaneous
Storytime. This event that has been running for 16 years aims to encourage more young
Australians to read and enjoy books. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by
an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools,
childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.
This year's book is called, I Got This Hat, written by Jol and Kate Temple and illustrated by
Jon Foye.
To help us get into the spirit of this book we are asking that students
bring their hat to
school on WEDNESDAY to wear while we are reading the story.
We look forward to seeing many interesting hats on Wednesday!
LEARNING & TEACHING NEWS
… Mrs. Janine Turville, L & T Leader
In last week's newsletter I wrote about learning being a process and that we need to, as
educators to provide our Students with a toolkit to assist with their learning. Skills that are
transferable into all areas of their lives. In today’s newsletter, I would like to explore the skill
of developing self management.
Kath Murdoch refers to Self-Management as a skill where students learn independently and
make wise decisions about their learning. They will know themselves as a learner and work
towards personal goals. The students understand that they can continually improve as a
learner. It also includes skills such as planning, organising, time management and controlling
emotions.
How can parents and carers support the development of this skill?
Below is a list of simple things that can assist your child to improve their self-management.
Encourage your child to:
 Stay focussed on a task
 Persist with learning even when it is challenging
 Use mistakes to help them learn
 Take responsibility for their own things
 Set up and pack up for themselves
 Manage impulses and think before we speak
 Ask questions to help with their learning
 Develop a positive internal voice when they feel uncertain or challenged
 Work things out for themselves before asking others
ITime- Can You Help?
The Year 5/6 students would like to use your expertise to assist them with their personal inquiries. Below you will
see questions that the students are researching. If recognise that you are able to support the student’s
learning please email Janine Turville jturville@sfmoreland.catholic.edu.au with the child’s name, question and
the way you would prefer to pass on the information (e.g. email, skype, using attachments or in person).

Inter-School Sport
Last Friday in inter-school sport, the 5/6 students played North Coburg Primary. In Football, St Fidelis’ played
exceptionally well and won the game. The score was 140 - 47. All players worked well as a team and showed
great sportspersonship. In Netball, the players displayed excellent passing and shooting and tried hard. The
girls’ team won and the score was 19 - 3. The mixed team tried their best and were unfortunate to lose. The
score was 13 - 1. The soccer teams had a very even game and showed some super soccer schools with many
great shots at goal. The boys team won by one goal. The score was 2 goals to 1. The girls had a hard fought
game with some strong players for both sides. Some great teamwork and passing was had by all. Sofia Angoti
was a standout player as a super goalie in the second half of the game and saved many goals, including a
penalty. St Fidelis’ was up 5 - 3, however in the last two minutes of the game North Coburg scored two goals to
finish the game at 5 all.
Cross Country
On Wednesday we had 39 competitors from St Fidelis’ run in the Cross Country against many other schools in
the Moreland district. Our school competed very well with many of our students coming in the top ten position
for their age group. These students will be going onto the district cross country race in a couple of weeks’ time.
It was super to see everyone cheering on all competitors to the finish line. Well done to everyone who ran the
cross country as it’s not an easy thing to do.
Thanks to all of the parents who came to support the students.

Vinnie's Winter Appeal –
Collections of Winter Jackets, Warm Accessories and Blankets for
St Vincent De Paul Society (Vinnies)
Do you have a spare pair of gloves, a jacket, jumper or beanie that is no longer used or that you or
your kids have grown out of..... or a warm coat or blanket in good condition that you no longer need?
We are seeking donations of these items in both children’s and adult sizes to provide to Vinnie's,
who will distribute these to the underprivileged families and those experiencing homelessness
through their Soup Van services during their Winter Woollies Appeal.
It would be great to discuss this collection with your kids and get them involved. Ask them if they
have any of the above items that they no longer need or are too small..... let’s get them thinking about
those less fortunate than themselves.
In addition to the above or as an alternative, they are also seeking items to make up Toiletry/Handy
Packs that consist of the following:










New toothbrush
Toothpaste
Lip balm
Pocket pack of tissues
Antibacterial wipes
Several band aids
New pair of socks
Note pad and pen
A few throat lozenges
A couple of small chocolates.
Please note, you do not need to donate all items on the list.... anything you can assist with is
appreciated and we will make the packs up towards the end of the collection period.
Please ensure all items are in good condition, and wash and bag the apparel or accessory items and
label with the gender and age group for which they would be appropriate; for example “Women’s size
10 or Girl’s size 7 – 8”. All items can then be placed into the labelled box that will be positioned near
the school’s main library entrance. Socks can be donated but need to be both new and unused.
We will continue the collection for a month, so please have any items you can spare to the school
before Wednesday June 22nd. We had a great response from families last year so we hope we can
all donate at least one item to go to those in need. Each donation will really make the difference in
someone else's life.
A flyer will be sent home this week also outlining this info; please support this great cause in any way
you can. The school will also be holding a Food Drive, so look for more info on that initiative in the
school newsletter.

Hi Families,
Over the past week the children have had lots of fun
getting creative making hero masks, finger knitting,
making robots out of boxes, and making beaded
jewelry.
This week in Morning and After Care we will be doing
crocheting, making more beaded jewelry, origami,
drawing and playing lots of outdoor games such as
soccer, basketball and football upon the children’s
request.
Our focus for the term will be on our Better Buddies
leadership program. We will be encouraging children
to take on leadership roles at the program. This could
be in the ways of running a group game, serving
afternoon tea or just helping a friend.
If you would like to register to attend before/after
school care, please visit www.campaustralia.com.au.
Thank you,
From the team at Before and After School Care!
