“The happiest people I know are people who don’t even think about being happy.
They just think about being good neighbors, good people. And then happiness
sort of sneaks in the back window while they are busy doing good.”
Rabbi Harold Kushnar
It has been an honor for me to serve as Board President this year. I can assure you that our Board of Directors is
committed to helping those in need in Beacon Falls and Naugatuck. Ours is one of the smallest United Ways in
the State of Connecticut, yet we certainly accomplish a great deal. We serve over 10,000 individuals in our
communities through our partner agencies and raise funds through employee contributions and special events.
The generosity of our donors and our event sponsors, the countless hours donated by our volunteers and the
dedication of our partner agencies never ceases to amaze me. This community is truly extraordinary.
Campaign Chair Pat Peterson led a very successful campaign. She recruited some new members for her team and
they worked diligently to obtain new contributors and reconnect with previous donors. We extend a great deal of
thanks to Pat and her team for their energy and dedication to our United Way.
Our Allocations Committee, led by Liz Santoro, spent many hours reviewing applications for funding. Additionally,
individual meetings were held with each of our partner agencies to ensure that your dollars met the needs of our
community. This year we had two new agencies apply for funding. We are truly thankful for their commitment
and time given to this important process.
The Marketing Committee, led by Sandy Lee, had another productive year. They created volunteer and agency
profiles for our website and social media, designed and placed several ads for us and created and implemented a
United Way Newsletter. This hardworking committee continues to promote our United Way with informational
materials and also focused on United Way’s volunteers, donors and partner agencies. We are fortunate to have
these dedicated volunteers working with us.
United Way also had a very successful year with special events. These events give United Way the ability to
connect with the people of our community in a different way. The Annual Car Show in July, sponsored by Ground
Up, and our Golf Tournament both surpassed our expectations. Board member Donna Andrew, once again outdid
herself with Kentucky Derby Day and the Salem Bus Trip. Both events were fantastic and well attended. Our 9th
Annual Festival of Trees was held in December and brought together businesses, schools, agencies and people
both young and old showing the true message of “community spirit”. Thank you to all the volunteers who help
make these events so successful!
We are grateful for the financial support the Naugatuck Partnership for Children continues to receive from The
Graustein Memorial Fund, Connecticut Community Foundation and Ion Bank Foundation. The Partnership
supports a number of programs in our community such as the Pre K Kindergarten Peer Mentoring Initiative,
Breakfast Club (Empowering Naugatuck Children to Lead Healthy Lives), and Making Parenting a Pleasure. The
collaborative continues to explore opportunities to benefit all children in Naugatuck.
A very special thank you goes to our Executive Director Lisa Shappy and Finance Director Beth Mongelluzzo for
their continued commitment to our United Way.
I am sincerely grateful to all of you for making my experience with the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls
wonderful. Thank you to our donors, corporate sponsors, volunteers, partner agencies and staff. Live United.
Campaign Report
Patricia Peterson
Dear Friends,
It has been an honor to serve as the 2015 Campaign Chair for the United Way of Naugatuck
and Beacon Falls. Our United Way is so fortunate to have an amazing group of volunteers
who give their heart and soul working on behalf of our community. I am deeply grateful to the Board of Directors,
Campaign Team, Marketing Committee and the Special Events Committee for their commitment, hard work, determination and continued focus on keeping the mission of the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls alive and
well in our Community.
Thank you to the Allocations Committee who put in countless hours and effort in order to ensure that the campaign
funds are directed where they will most benefit the condition of all. This group is truly the core of our United Way.
They gain a unique view of the organizations that benefit from the United Way at work, doing what they do, to make
the world a better place, to change lives and in some cases to save lives. You all deserve to share in a feeling of pride
and accomplishment. Each time the United Way runs a campaign or holds a fundraising event the proceeds truly
make a difference.
As the saying goes, “It Takes a Village”. It does take a village, to work with families, to raise a child and weather the
storms of life. If we want that kind of support, the place to begin is with ourselves. Community, like charity, begins at
home. You start building a strong community when you yourself decide that you will be a supportive citizen in your
community.
There are many things that we may not have control over. But like eating good food, building community is something that you can do, right here, right now, in the place where you are now -- whether or not you have a job, an
education, or a car. Be the first one to reach out and touch your neighbor. Always remembering, United we stand,
divided we fall -- cooperation is as important as competition.
In closing, I would like to thank Lisa Shappy, Executive Director and Beth Mongeluzzo, Finance Director for the
passion they project in all that they do for our local United Way; their dedication is apparent in everything they do.
Thank you for your contributions to our United Way, whether it monetary or sweat equity both are equally as
important and for your confidence in our organization. Without all of you, I would not be able to report that we
have reached our goal of $420,000.
53 years strong, the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls has been, and continues to be devoted to helping
our community – Make a Difference…Live United!
Sincerely,
Pat Peterson

Remembering our past helps us build our future.
Salem Society members have a strong desire to perpetuate the proud tradition of sharing that has been a part
of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls since the beginning. Through their actions, members continue to demonstrate a
personal investment in our complex and changing community. They understand the art of giving, caring and
responsibility. The examples set by these extraordinary people, in the spirit of the original Salem Society, will
have a major impact on future generations.
The Society was established in 1990 by Ronald Lengyel and Jeffrey Witherwax, two prominent members of our
community. It was named after Naugatuck’s original name “Salem Society” from 1773 and recognizes those
individuals who make especially generous gifts.
The Salem Legacy Fund is separate from our Annual Campaign and provides additional support for creating
solutions for today and tomorrow. This endowment was created in 2001 with a very generous gift from the
Estate of Mr. Gordon B. Mannweiler. It directly impacts the United Way’s ability to strengthen and support our
mission into the future. Mr. Mannweiler’s gift will touch the lives of strangers and friends indefinitely.
The United Way of Naugatuck & Beacon Falls, through its traditional Annual Campaign and the dynamic
endowment program, promotes volunteerism and collaborative efforts that continues to provide an efficient
and effective way to support the less fortunate in our community. Our local United Way is positioned to
confront the pressing problems of today and of times yet to come.
“The test of our progress is not whether we add
more to the abundance of those who have much,
it’s whether we provide enough for those who have
too little.”
Franklin D. Roosevelt

Allocations Report
Elizabeth Santoro
Whenever there is a Presidential Election the candidates tend to mention the basic needs of the people. They
discuss issues such as poverty and health concerns, however, the actual help that is provided is never quite
enough to give a hand up to our neighbors.
We are so lucky to have the support of our community for our special events and annual campaign allowing us to
provide essential funding to our local agencies. This year the Allocations Committee reviewed 15 applications each
bringing to light the importance of United Way’s annual campaign. The need is great and continues to grow for
services and programs. The donations you generously give have such a positive impact on our community. Our
committee carefully reviewed each organization to ensure that our dollars are put to good use. Each agency is
extremely thankful for the funding they receive; without your generosity they would have to cut services or may
even cease to exist.
I enjoyed serving as Allocations Chair and would like to thank my fellow committee members for their time,
commitment, determination and attention to detail. A job well done! I would also like to thank all our donors,
contributors, corporate sponsors and volunteers for your commitment to United Way and our community
year-round.
Thank you,
Elizabeth Santoro

Mary Connolly Community Caring Award
Rebecca & Peter Zandvliet
The Mary H. Connolly Community Caring Award is presented annually to recognize
an individual or individuals who have demonstrated outstanding support to the
United Way and our entire community and who have set the standard for service.
Rebecca and Peter Zandvliet have exemplified the spirit of compassion, support
and incredible personal efforts to improve the quality of life in Naugatuck and
Beacon Falls that this award seeks to recognize. Becky has become an institution in
our community in so many ways. For over 25 years her leadership, dedication, and
generosity with organizations such as the YMCA, Naugatuck Rotary, Naugatuck
Chamber of Commerce, Congregational Church of Naugatuck and the Naugatuck
Economic Development Corporation has made a profound difference. Her efforts
have helped each of these organizations thrive and grow and in turn continue the
vital role that each plays for this place that we call home. Becky is a past Board
member of our United Way, serving as Campaign Vice Chair, Campaign Chair, and Vice President. She continues to
be a Salem Society member and supporter of numerous events for this organization.
As a successful businesswoman and as the first woman to serve as Chairperson of the Naugatuck Board of
Education, Becky has become a role model and mentor for countless others who are now involved and are making a
positive difference locally, in our state and even farther. Becky truly is an intricate part of our community and her
enthusiasm and love for this town has been contagious. Whether it was her days as the Maple Hill Parent-Teacher
Organization President or her support of local talent and the arts through the Phoenix Theatre Company, she has
always made a positive impact. Her commitment continues on as she encourages our next generation to step up,
have a voice, and be involved.
They say that behind every successful woman is a good man. Peter and Becky have always been strong partners in
all of their endeavors. He has been a constant presence helping to organize and execute numerous community
events over the years. These would include the Beacon Falls Hayride, the Maple Hill Fall Festival/Flower Sale, a
cleanup of Baummer’s Pond, supporting Friday Night Basketball and the girls’ basketball team at the YMCA, or
simply ferrying boy scouts to countless events. Peter has been there to roll up his sleeves and get the job done.
Many would describe Peter as that quiet worker for the past 25 years not needing the limelight. Yet, Peter’s own
initiative, talent and hard work deserve recognition in its own right. He is as a charter member and current President
of the Beacon Falls Rotary Club; was an integral part of the team that worked to install the playground at Maple Hill
School, he assisted with an Eagle Scout project at the American Red Cross building. Peter was an incredible mentor
to the numerous Rotary Exchange students that the Zandvliet’s hosted over the years, enriching lives and building
relationships that continue to this day. A successful IT professional in his own right, Peter committed himself to be
involved in all of these efforts and many more.
Becky and Peter continue to demonstrate a level of love for family, friends and community, in ways large and small,
known and unknown, which gives true life to the United Way mission. Peter & Rebecca display all the attributes of
community service and caring that the United Way looks for as it awards the Mary H. Connolly Community Caring
Award each year.

I am truly honored to be the chair of the United Way of Naugatuck and Beacon Falls Marketing Committee and I’m
so thankful for the chance to work together with Marylou Cunningham of Ion Bank, Paul Singley of the Republican
American, and Lisa Shappy our Executive Director of the United Way. Each member brings their individual talents
and strengths; combined together with our commitment to making a difference and our compassion for those in
need we create this incredible team that I am very proud to be a part of.
This past year we’ve focused on celebrating our partner agencies and their commitment to advancing the common
good by increasing opportunities for children and youth to succeed; helping people become more self-sufficient in
meeting their basic needs; and increasing financial stability. Together we continue to make a difference for our
neighbors!
The Marketing Committee is proud to have increased our digital footprint by updating our website and scheduling
Facebook postings to create additional awareness within our community. Look for more exciting improvements in
2016. How can you help us today? Please join us in spreading the word. Friend us. Like our stories. Share our posts.
Visit our website. You make the difference, every day in small and big ways. Advocating through your own digital
footprint is an easy way to show your support.
A sincere thank you to the Citizen’s News and the Waterbury Republican for their generous support this year; their
donation of time and print has truly made an impact in our ability to reach all of you. We are extremely grateful to
the many companies, their employees, and those in the community that continue to donate their time, talents and
resources to support us throughout the year. Some volunteered an hour or a day; others donated a raffle prize, a
tree or became an elf; many pledged $1, $5, $50, $250 or became a Salem Society member; each doing what we
could individually… together we all LIVED UNITED!
Thank you all for making Naugatuck and Beacon Falls a great place to live.

HOW TO LIVE UNITED:
Join Hands.
Open your heart.
Lend your muscle.
Find your voice.
Give 10%. Give 100%. Give 110%.
Give an hour.
Give a Saturday.
Think of WE before ME.
Reach out a hand to one and
influence the condition of all.
GIVE. ADVOCATE. VOLUNTEER.
Living United means being part of the change. United Way provides the means for you to
Give, Advocate, and Volunteer in support of our work to advance the common good. Together we can accomplish so much more than any single group can do on its own.
