2010 Sholom Annual Report
IT’SALL ABOUTCOMMUNITY 2010 Sholom Community Alliance Annual Report LETTERFROMTHEPRESIDENT This past year has been one of transition and change. It has also been a year of renewed vision and focus. The board of Sholom Community Alliance has worked hard to develop strategic goals to guide us as we continue forward. Our goals include: • Providing superior resident centered care for all whom we serve; • Striving to be the first choice for the Jewish community for all stages of their needs; • Becoming the premier work environment to attract the highest quality health care professionals and team members; and • Continually working to become fiscally sustainable Education is a key component to success. We are working to educate our board, residents and their families and the greater community on this vision. We have started education with staff through guidance of Action Pact Services, a premier agency specializing in resident-centered care giving. We have worked to educate our board through focused meetings each month dedicated to specific areas within Sholom. We plan to educate the community through a speaker’s bureau that partners with our synagogues, Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis, Jewish Family Service of St. Paul, Jewish Community Relations Council, and both the St. Paul Jewish Community Center and the Sabes Jewish Community Center. Sholom’s dedicated staff, along with board and committee members, has already begun the process of working to achieve our vision. Our Quality Care committee has developed surveys to see what needs improvement. The Buildings and Grounds committee is working on long term plans to ensure proper maintenance of all of our buildings. We have a new Government Affairs committee, which will lobby our state legislators for continued support of senior services. Our Marketing committee is working with StoneArch Creative to help guide us in a strategic marketing plan to teach the greater community about the vast services that Sholom provides. Our Strategic Development committee, along with the tireless work of the Sholom Auxiliary, is working hard to raise annual funds through programs like the Bed and Breakfast Backers and events such as Sholom Shebang, Food for Your Soul (coming in June 2011) and the Butterfly Remember & Release. We are establishing a Religious Affairs committee to ensure Jewish values are a top priority as we evaluate our policies. Our Volunteer committee is continuing to develop programs to attract more volunteers to both East and West campuses. The Hospice committee is reviewing practices and policies, and educating the community on this new service that Sholom provides to anyone, wherever they live. The Technology committee monitors the technology needs for both staff and residents. The Administrative Affairs committee is working hard to keep us in compliance regarding all of our policies; they also keep us competitive by reviewing compensation levels in the marketplace. Finally, our Budget and Finance committee is keeping the pulse of where we are and where we are headed. Commitment to our strategic vision shapes all of the wonderful new things happening at Sholom. Staff, board and committee members are focused on achieving goals and making measurable advances throughout the coming year. Guided by such dedication and hard work, Sholom will continue to grow and adapt to best meet the needs of Minnesota’s Jewish community. President Sholom Community Alliance 2 2010 Sholom Community Alliance Annual Report WELCOMETOSHOLOM For over 100 years “Sholom” has been the name synonymous with elder care throughout the Upper Midwest. From a single nursing home in St. Paul back in 1908, Sholom, the organization, has grown to meet the needs of an aging population – adding new housing options like assisted living and additional low-income apartments, along with important new services like home care and hospice care. Today Sholom serves over 1000 seniors on two sprawling campuses. In 1995 Sholom Home, Inc. joined with Community Housing and Service Corporation and the new partnership became known as Sholom Community Alliance. The “community” in the new name then and now remains key to Sholom’s success. For it has been the support of the Sholom “communities” that has insured Sholom’s ability to thrive and continue to meet the needs of an aging population for over a century. This year’s annual report is different than past years. Along with information about the senior housing and services Sholom offers – we’re featuring the “faces” of Sholom – after all, it’s about the people, not the buildings, that Sholom serves. Page through this publication and you’ll see pictures of the residents and tenants who call “Sholom” home - whether they are here in one of our short-term rehab units recovering from an injury or illness or enjoying all that life has to offer in one of our apartment buildings or are being cared for in our long-term care facilities when they can no longer care for themselves. Faces of some of the caring and committed staff who work on the front lines in our buildings – and many behind the scenes are also pictured herewith in our pages – for it is their dedication and work ethic that ensure our seniors are cared for in their twilight years. Theirs are the smiling faces serving lunch, bringing a patient to rehab, administering medication or answering a call light. Note the longevity of some of our most dedicated employees on page 10. Volunteers, too, appear on these pages because they play a pivotal role on both of our campuses. They lend a much-needed helping hand - whether it’s helping bring residents to a special event, calling bingo, visiting one-on-one with a resident, playing the piano, greeting visitors on our campuses or staffing the gift shops. Our board chairs are pictured here, too, because they each head up important components that comprise the Alliance. The Sholom Foundation and Sholom Auxiliary are integral parts of Sholom Community Alliance and are dedicated to serving and supporting Sholom. On the following page, note the names of those individuals who volunteer on the three boards and give of their time and talents to Sholom. Last but certainly not least, the visitors to our buildings – friends and families visiting a loved one – create that sense of community as well. Check out the deli areas on either campus on a Sunday afternoon and witness the kibbitzing and kvelling as children and grandchildren visit with baubie or zaide. Staff welcome and appreciate daily visitors who visibly brighten up the day for residents and tenants. Yes, the “community” in Sholom Community Alliance is what makes Sholom unique and special. 2010 Sholom Community Alliance Annual Report 3 2009/2010BOARDOFDIRECTORS Sholom Community Alliance President Wendy Baldinger Vice President Barry Newman Neil Borenstein Sandy Kamin Barry Shear Steve Brand Robert Karon Doris Sherman Treasurer Jeff Ringer Bruce Fink Larry Kerzner Ed Sherman Secretary Mark Freeman Allen Freeman Julie Kozberg Julie Swiler Nancy Getzkin Lisa Lane Jim Tilsen Immediate Past President Allen Freeman Joe Goldberger Richard Levey Judy Werthauser Jon Gordon Paul Ross Bill Gotlieb Polly Saxon Directors Beth Birke Ronald Harris Dick Shaller President Elect Charles Selcer Stan Dobrin Marc Hasko Jack Fiterman Lisa Heilicher Steven C. Note the one common denominator. Sholom Community Alliance’s logo and Sholom Foundation’s logo each contain the word “Sholom” while Sholom Auxiliary’s spells out “Sholom” in Hebrew. Together they make up one vibrant organization! Sholom Auxiliary Sholom Community Alliance We need our community behind us now more than ever! Show your support for the Alliance in several different ways! 1. Become a member of Sholom. Choose from several membership levels - or we now offer a lifetime membership! Use the envelope included in this report to show your support! 2. Become a Bed & Breakfast Backer. Join the Sholom devotees who understand and support our mission to care for the elderly. Bed and Breakfast Backers contribute in increments of $25 or more per month to offset the operating losses of the Alliance. Backers are automatically members of Sholom for the first year. 3. Acknowledge a special occasion or memorialize someone with a donation to Sholom. For your convenience, join Sholom, become a Bed & Breakfast Backer and/or make a donation on our website at www.sholom.com – click on “Giving” and learn how! For more information on all of these options, call Libby Parker at (952) 939-1638. 4. Volunteer your time and talents at Sholom. Give an hour or a day, once or on a regular basis. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, call (952) 939-1627 (St. Louis Park) or (651)328-2068 (St. Paul). Sholom Foundation Created to enrich, enhance and bring comfort to Sholom residents and tenants through fundraising efforts. Ensuring Sholom programs, services and facilities for our elderly loved ones, ourselves, and generations to come . . . The Auxiliary has provided many “extras” for Sholom residents and tenants through the years – including purchasing special equipment and offsetting the “in-house” beauty/barber shop fees. The sole mission of Sholom Foundation is to ensure the financial viability of Sholom programs, services and facilities. The Foundation’s goal is to raise a $100 million endowment fund that is maintained in perpetuity for support of Sholom. Sales of Auxiliary-made “Delicious Knishes,” the Food for Show, Food on the Go Cookbook and Special Service cards all directly benefit Sholom. And of course, the annual Shebang is a wonderful way to support Sholom. Mark your calendars now for Saturday, October 30, 2010 at The Depot! Auxiliary specific endowments are another way to support the Auxiliary’s efforts. Endowments support specific programs like communication – others are there for where the need is greatest. To find out how you can create an Auxiliary endowment fund or to become a member, call (952) 939-1638. As an added bonus, going forward the Auxiliary together with the Alliance, are offering a joint membership program. See the following page for all the details and use the envelope tucked into this report to show your support for Sholom! 2010 Sholom Community Alliance Annual Report Serving the fastest growing population – seniors over the age of 65 – and ever-decreasing government reimbursements for long-term care, makes the need for a reliable source of funding for Sholom more important than ever, and even more challenging given today’s economy. The Foundation’s fundraising efforts are concentrated on planned gifts – cash and stock gifts that create funds in a family or individual’s name; charitable gift annuities that provide annual income for the donor; and estate gifts that name Sholom Foundation as a beneficiary in a will, life insurance policy, qualified retirement fund or trust, or property. Gifts to the Sholom Foundation provide the crucial financial support necessary in serving the elderly community. To learn more about how you can make a difference with your gift to Sholom Foundation, call Executive Director Joel Mandel at 952-939-1593. 11 NEWCOOPERATIVEMEMBERSHIP Sholom Community Alliance and Sholom Auxiliary are excited to offer a new, improved and cooperative DUAL membership program. Now you can write one check and be asked only once to become a member of Sholom – and one easy membership rate will grant you dual membership in both organizations. Here’s how it works: Join Sholom and you will be a member of both Sholom Community Alliance and Sholom Auxiliary for the coming year. Enjoy membership benefits of both organizations; the Auxiliary is planning an online release of their very popular regional directory (printed copies will also be available for a nominal fee) plus you will stay well-informed about the critical services and programs Sholom provides to our community’s elders as well as be notified of all of our events. By providing your email address, you will receive advance notice of all of our programs and events, volunteer opportunities, giving opportunities, and more through our monthly e-newsletter. Your membership supports the operations of two long-term care facilities, two assisted living facilities, a market rate senior apartment building and three HUD-subsidized apartment buildings plus a Jewish hospice care agency, home care for hundreds of seniors, Meals-on-Wheels, short-term rehabilitation and adult day services. Your support helps Sholom to continue to provide the level of care that our elders and our community have come to expect. Membership dues will be evenly split between Sholom Community Alliance and Sholom Auxiliary. After all, it takes all of us, working hand in hand, to create a vibrant, loving, and quality home caring for those who cared for us. Note, Sholom Auxiliary members will not receive a dues statement this year. All membership levels are listed on the enclosed envelope. You now have the option of becoming a Life Member of both organizations! If you are already a Life Member of either Sholom Auxiliary or Sholom Community Alliance, you will now be recognized as a Life Member of both organizations. As always, Life Members are welcome and encouraged to make an annual contribution! For more information please contact Libby Parker, Director of Development for Annual Giving & Events, at (952) 939-1638. BE OUR SOUL MATE SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR SHOLOM!
