President’s Message - June, 2015
FSC’s warmest wishes go out to Louise Geil. Her husband Phil passed away on May 15. Our thoughts are with you over the
coming months, Louise.
As we look to our upcoming summer travels, I’m also looking back to my Rocky Mtn. skiing, and more distant, travels this past
winter. My big “winter travel” event was a trip to New Zealand’s summer. The left photo shows a beautiful fire-at-lakeside
sunset while backpacking the Kepler Track. This 4-day loop trail is in New Zealand’s Fiordlands national park at the southwest
tip of the South Island. I highly recommend this Kepler track over the better known Milford Track – less crowded and a greater
variety of Fiordlands nature is to be seen on Kepler. We also kayaked through Fiordlands’
Doubtful Sound and came across particularly communicative dolphins. Two larger dolphins
pushed their heads to my immersed hand as if they were trying to pass on some insight about
the natural wonders of Doubtful Sound (a better Sound
for kayaking than famous Milford Sound). Very Cool
indeed!
One of my more enjoyable FSC outings was joining
in, a 4th time, at the Fraser III gathering. I also
enjoyed a couple huts trips this past winter. The right
photo shows a windy day’s sunset shot near a
Colorado Rockies hut. Given the photo’s scene, can
you identify the hut?

TUESDAY NIGHT HIKES – JUNE, 2015
Hikes begin at 6 pm at the designated trailhead or meeting place and provide a chance for
exercise and fun with other club members and visitors, as well as a delicious potluck dinner
after the hike. Bring your paper plate, plasticware (always bring these even if we go to
someone’s home after the hike), water bottle, and a dish to share. All hikes are approx. 2-3
miles (1 to 1-1/2hrs). In case of rain or high wind potluck may still take place at someone’s

JUNE 2 – Switzerland Trail Irma and Jerry Hille
Potluck on their patio (615 Mountain Meadow Road). Take Canyon West several miles to
Sugar Loaf Rd and turn right. Drive 3 miles to house set back from road but look for mailbox.
Parking is minimal so carpool as much as possible. Please bring a CHAIR.
JUNE 9 – Chataqua McClintoch Trail

turn Left (South) and proceed up hill to shelter. After hike return to shelter for potluck.

Take Canyon Blvd West, turn Right at Sugarloaf Road, then turn right at sign for Betasso

JUNE 23 – Eldorado Canyon

Meet at Dowdy Draw trail parking. From Boulder go South on Broadway to H93 – turn right on Eldorado Springs Road and go
about 2 miles to parking lot on left. We will then carpool to the home of Constance Roth, the Park naturalist. After hiking Eldorado
we will potluck at Constance's house. Poles recommended for hike.
JUNE 30 - Bike and Hike

Bike - 10 mile moderate bike ride (for frequent bike riders) in North East Boulder lead by Jim and Patricia. Hike - 3 mile hike on
the Cottonwood Trail lead by Dick Oye and Bonnie Crissey. Meet at Jim and Patricia’s home - 4882 Kings Ridge Blvd., Boulder,
80301. From Foothills Parkway and Valmont, go East one block on Valmont to 47th St, go North 2 blocks on 47th St. to Kings
Ridge, go East on Kings Ridge to 4882. Potluck after the bike / hike at Jim and Patricia’s home.
Safety Reminder: Mosquitos carry the West Nile virus in Boulder County. When out at dusk, take precautions - long
pants, long sleeves, DEET insect repellant on exposed skin. Be safe.
GUIDELINES FOR TUESDAY EVENING HIKES
These are social hikes for everybody to enjoy! Starting time is 6 pm at the designated trail head. All participants will sign the
Roster and the leader will take a head count. The group will wait for a maximum of 10 minutes for an expected latecomer. Hike
leader will set a time to be back for potluck meal. Group will pause after 15 minutes hiking to determine if there are slower hikers
who will then be advised to hike another 15 or 20 minutes and then return the same way to be back in time for dinner. There
should NOT be FEWER than 3 people separating from the group (if one gets hurt, one can go for help and the 3rd stay with the
injured hiker). Everyone's safety if a priority!
Chris and Linda Paris would like to extend a heart-felt thank you to all of our FSC friends who were concerned
about our fate in the recent Nepal earthquake. Thank you for your expressions of concern, your e-mails and
your assistance to our daughters as they tried to determine whether we were ok in the first chaotic days after
the quake.

Summer 2015 Wildflower Rambles
Wednesday, June 3 Bald Mountain Leader: Nancy Woodward 9:00 AM at Bald Mountain Open Space parking area or 8:40
AM at 4th and Mapleton to carpool. Part of this open space burned in the Four Mile Canyon fire of 2010 and we are revisiting to
look for new signs of recovery and for spiderworts. Take Mapleton Avenue west past Mt.Sanitas and up Sunshine Canyon Drive
(County Road 52). Bald Mountain is approximately 5 miles west of Boulder on the left (south) side of the road. There is a picnic
area, so bring a lunch, if you wish.
Monday, June 8 Wild Basin/Ousel Falls – Leaders: Judy LaMaitis and Linda Paris Ousel Falls is famous for its Calypso
orchids and that is our quest. Meet at 8:00 AM behind the 3 Margaritas at Iris and 28th St. to carpool. Bring your national parks
pass, if you have one.

CANYONS of the ANCIENTS - June 9-12
If you like to explore, hike, and enjoy learning about the history
of a culture before our time, come join Marty and Joe on an
adventure to the Canyons of the Ancients and a camping
experience at Marty’s cabin.
Our first day tour will begin at the Anasazi Heritage Center
which interprets the history and culture of the four corners area
and includes a research facility with over 3 million artifacts,
samples, and original documents. On the hillside above the
Center is the Escalante Pueblos ruins, named after Spanish
friars who explored this area in 1776. Their journal was the first record of an ancient pueblo in
southwest Colorado. Dominguez Pueblo in front of the Center represents a typical family unit of its time.
We will then visit Lowry Pueblo, Painted Hand Pueblo, and Hovenweep. An evening potluck will cap our day.
The second and third day will include hiking on the Trail of the Ancients in Sand Canyon, and East Rock Creek Trail. There are
nine sites along the main Sand Canyon trail or marked spur trails.
There is a $15.00 charge for the rental of an outhouse. Payment is due on May 30th. The trip is now full. If you wish to be put on
a waiting list, please contact Marty Butcher.
FSC Friday Afternoon Club (FAC) New Participants Welcome
FSC Friday FAC meets from 4 pm until 5:30 at Rincon del Sol, 2350 Arapahoe. It is on the South Side
of Arapahoe, just west of gas station at SW corner Folsom & Arapahoe, and good parking is on the
West side. Has good Happy Hour prices and food. FSC meets in the large west-side room.
BOULDER 360 BIKE RIDE - PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE IN START/END PLACE AND TIME
June 7, 2015 (Sunday) 18th Annual Circle Boulder by Bicycle/Boulder 360/180 10 AM
Valmont Park – The start and finish will be at Valmont Park, in Hub Plaza Picnic Area
adjacent to Airport Rd. this year. The rides will start earlier, with registration opening at 10 AM,
and will have rolling starts from 11 AM until 1 PM. Limited to 750 people. This is the 8th annual
FSC participation. Free. Rendezvous with Chris and Linda Paris in Hub Plaza at 9:45 AM.
There will be a group for both the 360 (23 miles) and 180 (14 miles). The City encourages
everyone to bike to Valmont, but if you must drive, parking will be available in the Amgen
parking lot (5550 Airport Blvd). Post-ride refreshments will be in Valmont Park. Call Chris and
Linda with questions.

Canoe Trip Friday, July 10 -Monday, July13
The Flatirons Ski Club always organizes a canoe trip in July on one of the local
Western rivers. This summer Flatirons will canoe several days on the Colorado
River near Moab, UT with no rated rapids. The trip will not carry camping gear in
the canoe. Saturday the group will canoe 11 miles from Moab Bridge to Gold Bar.
Sunday the group will canoe 8 miles from Dewey Bridge to Hittle Bottom with a
longer stop to explore Bull Slot Canyon. The group will stay in the Moab hostel
houses. 3 nights lodging ($65), 2 day canoe rental and 2 round trip shuttles
($127) = $192 per person. If you bring and shuttle your own canoe the house cost
is $65. House reservation deposit is $25. Canoe and Shuttle reservation deposit
is $25. Total $50 . $40 house balance is due to FSC by June 15th. $102 canoe
balance is due at outfitter check in. There is still space in the houses for 2 more

Hut Trip
Wed. Aug. 12- Fri. Aug. 14 & Tue. Aug. 18-Thur. Aug. 20
The Flatirons Ski Club always rents 2 nights in a 10th Mt. Div. Hut during August. This year we are
going back to probably the best hut, Fowler-Hilliard above old Camp Hale west of Vail. The cost for
a hut bed and 4 meals is $70 with a $25 deposit. The 8/12-8/14 trip is full. Due to a long Waiting
List Flatirons has now reserved August 18 & 19 with a return on August 20. There is a very short
Waiting List on either hut trip so your chances are good to join the group. Stewart Woodward
